It's time for another Life in the Fast Lane, and this one goes out to the Happy Creative... While discussing a deleted scene that was easily cut (and weirdly paced), Joe shares a very complex way to answer a reasonably easy-to-answer question posed in the deleted scene. We talk about the feud (?!) between Paul Walter Hauser and Vin Diesel before we Run the VIN to find another two edited posts (as we also find weirdness in his comments and find another new way he refers to the next movie). We read an email that makes us think about Better Luck Tomorrow in a deep way, we wonder if Slap Jack is secretly wealthy, and we find that Spy Racers has infected another victim's mind. “He made me laugh, he made me sad, he almost made me cry — this was a superpower. I went on this wonderful, connective human experience with another person, just by watching him.”  Sung Kang is an American filmmaker - best known for his role as Han Lue in the Fast & Furious franchise, a character he first portrayed in one of the seminal Asian American films Better Luck Tomorrow. But Sung is also someone we've known - and had our eye on - for awhile. A thoughtful soul, originally a troublemaking kid from Georgia found his way thru package stores, garages, and street performers, becoming an early, indelible face of what Asian Americans could be - so much further beyond the model minority myth. Sung actually stopped by to talk about two pretty significant, personal projects dropping at the same time THIS week - a new podcast CAR STORIES, and a new independent film - SHAKY SHIVERS. Please note that Shaky Shivers, being an independent film was granted a promotional exception from the ongoing writers and actors strikes, which this pod fully supports. Sung's new podcast podcast - CAR STORIES - was actually a project Raman was early involved in, and covers an an area Sung's always been passionate about - how cars can be a vehicle (no pun intended) into the human condition and culture. And the film, SHAKY SHIVERS, is Sung's d directorial debut, an almost throwback and love letter to the campy horror films we all grew up on. Hearing Sung's humble origins, journey, and motivations will help you understand why so many are drawn to his approach and work. But be sure to check out his latest work - film and podcast - both dropping on Thursday, September 21st. #177 Still, Fast X, Better Luck Tomorrow This week, we are fortunate to have another crop of good films. Beginning with a documentary called Still; about famed 80's and 90's actor Michael J. Fox's struggle with Parkinson's and his life overall. A surprisingly tender documentary with seamless editing and match cuts. Fast X, everybody's fave soap opera action series, returns with a part one within its part ten. Nothing in caliber was raised but extremely fun nonetheless, not to mention a solid villain. Lastly, we take a look into Justin Lin's first indie film with Better Luck Tomorrow; a story inspired by other great indie and fresh filmmakers like Kevin Smith and Tarantino. Writer Malcolm Harris has a new book out called Palo Alto: A History of California, Capitalism, and the World. It's as sweeping as the title suggests: a lively biography of the author's hometown that covers nearly two centuries. In the book, Harris traces the connections between the settling of California and the advent of the railroad, the establishment of Stanford University, the technological boom of the long 20th century, and own data-driven present.  What you may not expect is that the book is also, in many ways, a history of the cinema: as Malcolm details, Eadweard Muybridge developed his pioneering equine motion studies under the patronage of railroad baron Leland Stanford, who wanted to figure out how to raise better race horses. So on today's episode, Film Comment Editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute invited Malcolm to join them for a conversation about his new book and California's decades-spanning nexus of technology, capital, and the moving image. From Muybridge, they moved to several other movies that Malcolm cites in the book, including Justin Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow, Wayne Wang's Chan Is Missing, the dot-com era thriller Antitrust, and more.

In 2006, a new horror icon was born. Fatigued by the endless defanged remakes and sequels of the time, lifelong horror fanatic Adam Green set out to create a new unstoppable killer very much in the mold of beloved slasher superstars Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and most of all, Jason Voorhees. In fact, his film would not only feature such genre royalty as Robert Englund and Tony Todd but Jason himself, Kane Hodder as the films deformed giant, Victor Crowley. Green's film, set in the New Orleans swamps where an ill-fated tour boat is wrecked and its passengers are left stranded with much more to worry about than alligators, was a spot-on love letter to 80's slasher classics.  As you have probably guessed by now, that film was “Hatchet”. Filled with insane gore set pieces, hilarious dialogue and a totally game cast, the movie succeeded in creating a new franchise and has so far been followed by 3 sequels. Only one actor other than Kane Hodder has appeared in every film in the series. A scene-stealer with many of the best lines in the series, this actor has cemented himself as a fan favorite. Our guest today is Parry Shen. Parry is a busy man. He loves to work and one need only check out his IMDB profile to see he has had a rich and varied career as an actor. From a starring role in Justin Lin's critically acclaimed crime drama “Better Luck Tomorrow” to a series regular on “General Hospital”, to his many credits as a voice actor - Parry cannot be stopped. And who would want to? He's a welcome presence in anything he's in. Terrific timing and presence to boot. Parry has made a name for himself with genre fans with credits in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, Full Moon's “Shrieker” and “The Hazing”, but it was his work in the “Hatchet” series that has cemented him as a genre name. Parry talks with us on some of the challenges he has faced as an Asian American actor and how the business has changed, the pitfalls of confusing being strategic with your career to being perhaps more particular than you can afford to be and how his love for the movies means he's always the consummate professional on set but always excited to be there.  It's time to return to the swamps and the turf of Victor Crowley with our guide, Parry Shen.  ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Each week, a different author chooses a movie: a movie they love, a movie they hate, a movie they hate to love. Something nostalgic from their childhood. A brand-new obsession. Something they've been dying to talk about for ages and their friends are constantly annoyed by them bringing it up. * In this episode of Open Form, Mychal talks to Elaine Hsieh Chou (Disorientation) about the 2002 film Better Luck Tomorrow, directed by Justin Lin. On today's installment of "Flashback Friday's", I'm highlighting a record that came out in 2018. The band is called Settle Your Scores, and the album is titled "Better Luck Tomorrow". These guys remind me of a poppier Four Year Strong. About Settle Your Scores: Formed in late 2014, Settle Your Scores has hit the ground running and shown no signs of slowing down. Releasing their first full-length album at the beginning of 2016, the Ohio natives quickly made a name for themselves, touring frequently across the US. Their second album is set to be released in early 2018. Check them out! From Hysteria Mag: Dynamic, fun, sonically cutthroat and an all-round party banger—just a few words to describe Better Luck Tomorrow, the sensational new album from punk rock aficionados Settle Your Scores. MORE: The Wonder Years: Around The World In 11 Bangers It's a throwback to the zesty vibes of the genre as they were in the noughties, with an ingenious element of industrial hardcore thrown in the mix. You wouldn't have thought beatdowns and gang chorales could work in a punk setting, but it's something Settle Your Scores does really, really well. Better Luck Tomorrow brings luck today for Settle Your Scores, who fix up to sound sharp. Sick yet subtle industrial guitar runs are paired well with gritty vocals in standout track Zero Hour, elements of each genre stepping into the spotlight in turn. Screamo vox verses, punk-rock choruses–epic. Sure, the word punk is getting thrown around a lot here but Settle Your Scores, with their unified attitude, melodic fun and recalcitrant tone, should just have their image inserted into the English dictionary by way of definition of the word! Better Luck Tomorrow is a lucky dip of sonic surprises with every track, never failing to bring the listener to attention. It's an album of unconstitutional attitude and pestilent punk.

Wieso, weshalb warum? Erfahrt ihr hier.

Who's ready to live their life a quarter-mile at a time? We're joined by Brian Lau to find out the answer to that through explaining the ENTIRE TIMELINE of the "Fast and Furious" film saga. This episode finds us looking at the original "The Fast and The Furious" through "Fast Five," as well as multiple other films that link some of the movies, and the character Han's origins in the film "Better Luck Tomorrow." B Lau has not seen most of these movies, and we do our best to get him up to "speed" on the plots, characters, and transition from sort-of-realistic street racing film to "the coolest driving sequence we can remember."
