Mast trees. or more importantly acorns...prove to be the undoing of many a whitetail, both buck and doe alike!  Couple that with a fine place to take a hawg  or a bear in some portions of their range, and as hunters you can begin to realize of not just scanning the ground, but the trees above before you choose your stand location!

SOMETIMES it is critical in the first few seconds after the shot...marking the animal...sometimes your location...where you last saw them...all are elements that mat come into play.  Remember reading sign is not a forgotten art, but often an overlooked clue.

Wash the mud off your guns...and stands...and get them ready for the upcoming year....From sling swivels to sawblades...make sure that all is functioning! 

MANY TIMES I'M ASKED how did I know to call one more time...The answer is simple.  I called...If it looks like it should hold a turkey, it generally does.  Don't be bashful about taking the lead and trying one more thing!

iTS that time...time to find and tune up your gear for turkey huntin'...Here are a few tips and techniques for gettin ready this spring!

Many times you can locate a game rich hotspot...simply by taking a peek from above!  Wether an isolated basin that holds big bucks...or a small strip of timber that serves as home for a boss gobbler, by studying the terrain, oftentimes you can virtually pick a tree, from your computer screen or map table.  The area's crops, funnels.pinch points and rivers and bottoms all show quickly how they channel game movement, when peeking from above.  Sure saves some boot leather!

WELL, as sportsmen we all encounter horses and backcountry travel...if you hunt long enough, or fish, or just like to see wild country.  Course after attending Famed Smoke Elser's packin. school at seventeen, I came to the conclusion that often if you want to get somewhere and have everything, you put itin a backpack and tote it.  Horse packin' or the art is fast becoming a thing of the past, and it is hard to take.  When you have a good group of stock and a couple of good packers, well it's always work but it becomes easy...but then you realize,,,you deal with horses...several of them....gear...mountains....bears....inexperienced riders....well, now you got the picture!

ONE of the most played episodes ever.  Basically it boils down to this.  Whether a bullet or broadhead it must perform.  in this episode we look at what works and why!  The proof is in the impact!

KINDA got me in a dilemma here...I done run my mouth so much...I don't even remember the exact topic!  But judging from the title, I would say that it has something to do with how good hunters continually bump across what they looking for!  After years spent in the woods, I know one thing...if you are out there...there is hope.  Many is the time I checked one more gate, one more "hole", or left the truck one more time and ended up with a great hunt!  So hang in there and KEEP ON...KEEPIN' ON.

You know one of the most important keys to the springtime is having turkeys to hunt.....so in many cases...you have to ask permission.  If you cannot get to the turkey...sometimes some quick thinking and a general knowledge of the land can let them get to you...course I had permission on one place and the turkey lived off in a hole...took me three years to figure out where he was and how to get to him effectively...course he was hard headed, gobbled a few times on the limb and rarely on the ground and of course I was hunting the easier places...but it was like turkey headquarters when I finally figured out where he was calling home...Once again though the key is asking permission!

You know each and every year you have to blow the dust off your gear and get ready to roll into the Spring...for me it's simply pitchin a few things in the truck.  But still after all these years I check a few things out, before I get the April fool's day surprise!

TAKE A BULLDOZER...and build a place to kill a longbeard?  This is the crowd favorite once again about the best turkey I have ever set to...I do believe...If it had not of been for the weather, the gun, and yes the bulldozer...he may still be owning his part of the Alabama woods!

THIS started out to be about big game hunting...but quickly became about turkey hunting.  To me there are no experts...and i've been with the so called best of the best.  All in all it boils down to time ...location,,,and awareness of the animal your chasing.   Perfect is out the window!

ONE of the most important things about hunting is simply gettin there quick and quiet...then being comfortable while doing so!  We'll discuss this and invariably much more this episode...and we simply key on aspects of getting there!

BASICALLY.  its just that.  An area that a gobbler struts in to pick up hens... It could be a clear logging ramp, a point on a field, a mowed area.  To hunt it, well that's quite simple...set up and wait.  Not just set up mind you blind in...in sniper's terms build a hide.

This is a continuation of CALLING SMALL with actual audio from two different hunts...both of these examples are from contact through shot, both ironically on Bama Longbeards...Pick up the tone, cadence and rhythm from these two hunts to help with calling light for big results!

One of the keys that I have picked up as I grew older, is how to tailor make the call fit the animal. Many times an aggressive "cutt" type attack, while working on some, will not allow you to harvest the big old long spurred gobbler...The key lies in learning how to yelp as the turkey dictates...the same can hold true on a bull elk but that's another tale! Trust in the fact that if you learn to yelp, soft and low on a simple call, many times you will put an entirely different bracket of longbeard in the pot!

WANNA TRY THAT NEW SIGHT, STAND BOLT MISSING FROM LAST YEAR? Friends this is the time to work out all the kinks...tape an extra stand nut to your climber,,,fix that rifle sling,,,paper tune your bow or install that new peep sight...If you like me, all your stuff needs to be attached to the turkey vest...stash an extra pair of gloves and a headnet there...cause some one will lose or not have their own. Anything that affects your shootuing needs to be dealt with now. Trust me you'll have a far more productive time afield!
