Figuring out how to make laundry less overwhelming can feel so overwhelming, but you're not alone! Check out these 5 Fresh Tips to help make your laundry overwhelm less overwhelming with professional organizer Lindsey Mahanna.You can learn more about Lindsey Mahanna on her Fresh Starts Profile.5 Fresh Tips to help you be less overwhelmed with laundry:Figure out the best cadence for your family. One load per day or a marathon session over the weekend? I like the one-load-per-day approach. Throw it in before work, move it to the dryer later in the day, and fold it later that evening or the next morning - whenever you have the most energy.Try laying flat instead of folding. Trying to keep wrinkles at bay, but don't have time to fold? My husband brought this laundry trick to the relationship and it's a keeper. When those t-shirts come out of the dryer still hot, lay them flat on a surface and pile them up on top of one another. This will keep the wrinkles out until you have time to fold them. Just be careful because cats are drawn to a pile of warm clothes.Wash each person's clothes separately. The old guidance was that clothes must be sorted into lights and darks before washing. This guidance can be ignored, except for brand-new dye-heavy clothes (those should still be washed separately at first). Since you don't need to sort by color, I recommend washing each family member's clothes separately - especially children's. This makes it so much easier to keep track of whose clothes are whose. This also works well with tip #4…Get Kids Involved. Start when they are little by having them turn their clothes right side out. Then, as they get older, add in folding their clothes. Eventually teach them how to work the washing machine and dryer. Tips for kids with ADHD: Kids with ADHD like to know what is expected of them. So, try to have their laundry day be the same day every week. In my house, kids' clothes are washed on Fridays or Saturdays so that they can help with it while off from school and so that they can “fold” it in front of the TV. Also, review what really needs to be folded. Laundry is one of the most dreaded tasks for people with ADHD. I see it across all of my clientele. This is when it's helpful to change the expectations a bit. For my son who lives mostly in athletic gear, I only ask him to fold his t-shirts and match up his socks. Everything else can be tossed in the drawers. Does his folding look anything like mine? No, but as long as he's comfortable wearing those clothes, that's fine with me.Change your expectations for family members with ADHD, even the adults. People with ADHD really struggle with putting clothes away. So...Don't! Leave them in the basket. However, you will need to set up a system to make sure you know which clothes are clean and which aren't, especially since clothes may not always get folded. I recommend keeping clean clothes in laundry baskets and keeping dirty clothes in hampers. Bonus Tip: If you are really behind in laundry - outsource it! If money is tight, dropping it at a laundromat is cheaper than door-to-door service. Also, you could always choose to outsource some and not all of your laundry.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuelshall come to you, O Israel. ***** RITA HEIKENFELD’S FOOLPROOF SIRLOIN TIP ROAST A very unusual way of roasting beef! A vintage recipe that’s very trendy. Roasted carrots with red onions, lemon zest and mint would be a lovely side. Yield: Serves 6-8 Ingredients 3 pounds sirloin tip roast, tied Herb “crust” 1-1/2 teaspoons each: salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 teaspoons each: dried oregano and dried basil 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper or more to taste 3 cloves garlic, minced — a good tablespoon or more Palmful fresh parsley, minced – optional Enough olive oil or softened butter to bring it all together To pour around roast Beef broth or red wine (a generous cup or so) Instructions Take the roast out of the refrigerator 1-1/2 hours before roasting, but leave it wrapped. This allows it to come to room temperature without drying out, resulting in a very juicy roast. Unwrap and pat dry. Mix together ingredients for herb “crust”. Preheat oven to 250. (No, that’s not a mistake!). While oven is preheating, film the bottom of an oven proof, heavy pan with olive oil. Heat on medium high until the oil just starts beginning to smoke. Put the roast in the pan, turning to sear to a nice brown on all sides. Rub the roast evenly with the herb “crust”. Put back in pan and pour broth or wine around it. Roast for 1 hour and 30 minutes or until it reaches 130 degrees. Turn off the oven and leave the roast inside and don’t open the door. .After 30-40 minutes, check the temperature. It should read 140-145 for medium. Remove from oven and let rest, tented, 10-15 minutes. Remove ties before slicing with sharp knife into thin slices. Drizzle with accumulated juices. TIPS Make sure you get a roast labeled “choice” which has more fat running through it for flavor and tenderness. One that’s marked “select” will be too lean for this recipe. Having the roast tied allows for more even roasting. What’s the best wine for beef? My go-to wine is Pinot Noir, lovely for drinking alongside, as well.Any good quality burgundy works well with this recipe. ***** Full list of guestsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How did Aptar set up such a successful DE&I initiative in such a short time, especially in an industry where women are generally underrepresented? What were the key factors that helped the program take root and become an integral part of the company's core values? It's more important to set your vision, start small, and keep learning as you go. A survey can be a great starting tool from which a DE&I strategy can emerge. Men tend to underestimate the challenges women face in the workplace. It is a different experience to work in a company whether you are a man or a woman. Tips Make sure that everyone in the organization clearly understands the objective and the intention behind the initiative. Adapt your messages and communication channels to the target group. Kyle Schwartz is in her tenth year of teaching, this year as a reading teacher at Doull Elementary in Denver, Colorado. Her first book, I Wish My Teacher Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything for Our Kids focuses on realities that students face and how educators can respond to their students' needs by building relationships. Her second book, I Wish For Change: Unleashing the Power of Kids to Make a Difference is a guide for educators, families, and mentors to help young people find a personal sense of power and use it to better their communities.   In addition to teaching, Kyle is a dedicated advocate for students. I'm wrapping a big project and a big part of that is collecting and reviewing invoices from the crew and other vendors. In this case, there are probably 50 or more invoices, so I see a lot of different things. This goes back to my job job days when I used to oversee the accounting department and knew what drove them crazy. I did my best to be a buffer and that's something I've continued as I work directly with creatives. But it still surprises me how some invoices come in, not just from newer freelancers but from people who are decades into their career. So here are some invoicing tips that will make it easier for people to pay you. And that's what you want, right? You've probably heard me say before that you always want to keep the people paying you happy. Whether it's a small business or a big corporation, each accounting department is going to have its own system and set of rules. This is the one time when I don't think you should assert your boundaries. Whatever they need from you, give it to them. If it means you have to add a couple extra bits of information to your invoice, who cares? If they want to do direct deposit, let them. Any push back on your part flags you as difficult and could cause delayed payments for a number of reasons. That being said, the most important things to keep in mind is being timely, being detailed, and being considerate. Timeliness is important for obvious reasons. The sooner you invoice, the sooner you should get paid. I say should, because we all know that not all companies pay on time, but you never want the cause of the delay. Standard payment terms are typically net 30, meaning you get paid within 30 days from receipt of the invoice. That doesn't mean 30 days from the date of the job or completed work. That's 30 days from the time they receive your invoice. If you take 2 weeks to get around to sending it, don't expect that they're going to turn around payment in 2 weeks. No. That 30-day clock starts the day they have everything they need from you. So get your invoice in quickly. Also, you might not be in a rush for payment for whatever reason, but if the company is trying to close out the job, waiting for your invoice can be a huge hassle for them. I don't know how many times I've had to chase down an invoice, sometimes for weeks. It baffles me every time. I'm trying to give you money, dude. Let me pay you! I get that you're busy and invoicing isn't your favorite thing to do, but there are other people who can't do their jobs until you do it, so stay on their good side and be prompt. Not so prompt that you're invoicing before a job is done, because that can rub people the wrong way, too, but within a day or two is usually greatly appreciated. Details are crucial when it comes to invoicing. Make sure all the information they need is there. A good way to know what they need is to ask them. After you've done all the negotiation and committed to a project, but before it actually starts, ask what information they need on the invoice and to whom it should be sent. They might need a specific job name, job number or PO referenced, so get that information early. If you send it to the wrong person, it could cause delays. If you reach out after the job and have to wait for them to get back to you, it could cause delays. We don't want delays. Double check your information, too. Make sure the line items are correct and the math adds up. If you're using accounting software like Quickbooks, it'll do the math for you, but you still want to be sure everything is accurate. If you're using a Word template or something like that, there is so much room for user error. I am constantly finding invoices that don't add up, have information from a completely different job, and other nonsense that wastes everyone's time. And it doesn't make you look good if they have to reach out and ask you to correct something. A good way to keep an accounting department happy is to send all of your docs in one email with a clear subject title. Send your invoice and any receipts for reimbursement. If you haven't worked with them before, or in the current year, send them a W9. Include your payment options. Or, if they already stipulated how they pay, send the information they requested. Give them everything they need at once and it'll make their lives easier. And the money people do remember who makes their lives easier, and who doesn't. Maybe you don't care about them, but giving them what they need up front means fewer emails for you and often sooner payment, so that makes your life easier too. Speaking of details and making lives easier, make sure to fully read what they send you. Don't ask a question that's already been answered because you didn't bother reading what someone took the time to send you. Be more respectful than that. I say this as someone who sent all of the payment information in a deal memo, plus a separate email specifically about invoicing, and I'd say at least half emailed to the wrong address, didn't include everything, or both. It creates extra work for me, which costs the client more money, and it's extra work for them because now they have to deal with the back and forth that could've easily been prevented. I don't take it personally, and I do what I can to help them, but I tend to be nicer than most and go out of my way more than I would expect someone else to. My last point about details should be obvious, but with what I've seen lately it might not be. Make sure to separate your line items in a way that makes sense. If you worked 10 days at the same rate, you don't need 10 line items, but you should call out the dates in the line item so it's clear. Also, keep separate lines for separate services. Your labor and per diem rate shouldn't be on one line item. Your labor is taxed, but per diem is not. If you put them together, you're putting it on the accounting person to do the work for you and separate everything out. I will do that. Many will not. They'll just put it in as you sent it and then you get taxed on something you shouldn't. Be mindful of accounting categories, which you should have a basic understanding of, especially if you do your own bookkeeping or use accounting software to categorize your expenses. If you're asking for reimbursements for gas and office supplies, you know those are different, so don't lump them together on your invoice and make the accounting person add up the receipts. You won't always know the extent to how they categorize things, but you can use common sense. Also, don't submit for a reimbursement without including the receipt. Some people may be more lax with this, but just like you should have receipts for all of your expenses, your client needs those from you as well. They don't want issues with the IRS any more than you do. And this is a bonus tip just because I think it's important. If you have given a discount on the project, make sure to invoice for your full rate and then add the discount as a separate line item. This is a record of what happened, so if they hire you again and look to see what you billed before, it's clear that you gave them a deal. If you don't call it out separately, they might just think it's your normal rate. It might be someone else you're dealing with who doesn't know the conversations you had with the other person. It's a nice way to protect yourself and remind them that you did them a favor last time but that's not to be expected every time. Most of what I just said also applies to being considerate, which is how you should always be. I should be able to leave it at that, but I'll explain further. Taking the time to do everything right the first time helps the person on the other side do their job better. They don't want to have to chase you down for everything they need any more than you want to spend more time on that project when you've already moved on. Make it easy for everyone. When you're talking to the accounting people, even if your payment is past due, be polite. You're not going to get anywhere by being aggressive or throwing a tantrum. That doesn't make them want to help you. You have every right to want your money and be frustrated that it's not getting to you on time, but the person on the phone probably can't do anything about that. But if you're nice, they'll be more willing to talk to the person who can and try to help you. If your address or other company information has changed, notify them by sending a new W9. Don't just change the address on your invoice and expect them to notice. Once you're in the system, they probably aren't reviewing your contact info to see if anything is new. It's your responsibility to tell them. I see this happen a lot so I thought it was worth mentioning. Lastly, consider your payment options, especially when it comes to credit cards. Many don't like accepting credit cards because of the fees. You typically lose about 3% of the total. I don't like fees either. They are tax deductible, but I like to have all of what I earned. That being said, I do know that accepting credit cards tends to get you paid faster. I have seen this personally and have talked about it with other friends and clients and it seems to consistently be the case. The old school method of writing checks takes time and extra effort. This was the case before, but has become especially true since COVID allowed more people to work from home. Companies don't always have an accounting person physically in the office to print a check and then get someone, who also might not be in the office, to sign it. Then get an envelope and a stamp and put it in the mail. It's a bit archaic. But if you give them a digital option, either ACH or credit card, they just have to enter some details in your system and be on their way. It's much simpler. Also, in bigger companies, the person you're working with directly may have an allowance of sorts and can approve up to a certain amount if paying on a company card. But writing a check takes many layers of approval, which causes those delays we're trying to avoid. Something to think about – are the fees worth getting paid faster? Your call. If you're still with me, thanks for listening. I know invoicing isn't a fun topic, but it's a regular part of running a business and can't really be avoided. But having been on the receiving end for so long, I see all these simple errors that get in the way and I don't like it. So do yourself a favor and stay on top of your invoicing. Be prompt, be detailed, be considerate, make it easy to get paid and enjoy the money you worked so hard to earn.

Morning Meditation is a beautiful practice. It's not always easy, but it's worthwhile. The benefits are subtle at first and every day is different, but it heals your subconscious mind and bring peace to your body, opens your heart and awakens your spirit. By incorporating meditation into your daily routine, all of the above becomes more natural, but takes practice. Meditation is not easy. It requires us to practice being still, present, focused and calm. But it is worth it. Meditation also helps to manage & release stress with is very important in our busy lives. Most people believe meditation is an all or nothing thing. If they can't sit still, then they can't meditate. I know very few people that can sit still. It takes practice and it's ok if you get distracted. TIPS: Make sure you are sitting comfortably - start sitting on a chair. Practice at time when you are least likely to be distracted like early morning or before bed. Start with short sits of 5-10 mins. Use a timer. Use your breath as a guide to help you stay present. Summertime means hot weather, beach days, and all the tomatoes you can get your hands on. The Dinner Sisters embrace tomato season with three recipes that will do justice to your garden victories or farmer’s market hauls. Plus we have a tip for skinning salmon, Pasta with Marinated Tomatoes and Herbs: NYT CookingTurn your farmer’s market tomatoes into a low cook dinner by marinating with olive oil, salt, olives, herbs and canned tuna. The only thing you need to do is cook pasta when you’re ready. Light yet filling, this is an ideal summer dinner. Tips: Start this early enough in the day if you’d like to have it for dinner. Give yourself at least 5 hours or so for best taste. In other words, eat lunch and then get cracking on the tomatoes.Use a better canned tuna- usually we choose an imported tuna in oil. But lately we’re really liking the American Tuna brand. If this recipe makes too much for your household, consider making half the pasta at one time. In other words, marinate the tomatoes, herbs and tuna. Boil half the pasta and toss with half of your marinated mixture. Reserve the second half and refrigerate. The next day, bring the container to room temperature (about a half hour). Boil the pasta and you have dinner or lunch on day two!Stone Fruit and Heirloom Tomato Mozzarella Basil Salad : The Kitchen PaperSummer on a plate! Stone fruit (peaches, plums, and nectarines) are a mouth-watering combination with tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella. A gorgeous plated salad for the summer months. Tips: Make sure your fruits are dead ripe for this salad. The fruit is front and center in this recipe. If you can’t find bocconcini, fresh mozzarella torn into chunks or a large dice would also work well. We thought this worked well for lunch on its own but would also be nice with a piece of grilled white fish. Savory Tomato Poundcake: The New YorkerWhat’s in a name? For this recipe, maybe quite a bit. Don’t be put off by the poundcake title, this is a savory, cheesy, cake, punctuated by tangy tomatoes. An ideal way to celebrate the best of summer tomatoes. Tips: Watch the baking time. Depending on your oven, this may take less time than indicated in the recipe. The poundcake and a green salad (and maybe some poached eggs, if you’re really going for it) would make a treat of a lunch with friends. From the Smorgasbord…Tips for Skinning Salmon: Try freezing your skin-on salmon filet for 20-30 minutes before skinning. The skin will peel off with a good hard tug with your fingers and a little help with your filet knife. Schulz Summer Recipe: Creamy Cucumber Salad Use all those cucumbers that are ripe this time of year for a cooling salad dressing with mayonnaise, vinegar, and a touch of sugar. Salt it up! Use a good, flaky sea salt (we like Maldon) to give your just-picked fruits and vegetables the taste they deserve.

People believe that by ignoring a problem it might go away, but we need to take responsibility and face these issues in order to move past them.   Reducing monthly expenses is a good place to start when re-ordering our financial lives. Cutting subscriptions, reducing unnecessary outgoings and expenditure is a good jumping off point, and can free up money each month that can be used to pay down debt or used for investment.   As well as living within our means, we must understand the concept of debt acceleration. If we order our finance agreements (Credit Cards, Loans etc) by highest interest to lowest interest, and then pay the minimum payment on the lower agreements, and as much as possible on the highest until it’s cleared, we reduce our interest payments exponentially and in a shorter period of time.   Overcoming fear and changing your mindset around investment are key factors that often put new investors off at the outset. Many believe that life is all about finding a job, paying bills until retirement and then (hopefully) taking it easy on a pension as a reward. But this view of what life can be is so often perpetuated because people aren’t educated about how life can really be.   Esther’s Top 3 Tips: Make sure you know your finances inside and out. In this episode, Jason and Bridget will chat about cold calling — the good, bad, and the ugly. How do you do this in the WordPress ecosystem effectively without sounding like a used car salesman?No-one likes cold calling at first – it feels slimy – how to do it right?The problem: How do you let people know that you’re accepting clients? How do people know if you’re available? Are you advertising?For a regular brick and mortar business, people will just stop in and hire you, but if you’re an online-only business, how do you reach people? How do they know if you are accepting business?Everybody in the WordPress space has the potential to be everyone else’s competitor – how can you reach out / connect? Everyone has a specialty or a focus – you can refer business to friends/connections that you know that handle a different specialty. If you know your limits, you can refer out work to other people you know through your networking/connections and they can do the same for you.Bridget would see jobs posted on Linkedin, etc. and take an interview with them and when talking to them say “actually, I’d really like to be your vendor” and then have a conversation with them, basically turning the interview into a sales call!(Bridget sidenote: The salary in our industry is way too low. If you only pay $15/hr for social media, you’re only gonna get social media worth $15)Bridget sometimes notices jobs for companies listed for 30, 40 days … sometimes it’s good to approach them and see if they would consider outsourcing temporarily. There is a risk in reaching out but even if it doesn’t work out now, chances are they’ll remember you in the future for another opportunity.You don’t know until you try, and sometimes you just need to ask to have a conversation!Some people approach their businesses by choosing a niche (Ie. all real estate companies/websites) … Bridget likes to be monogamous in her relationships with clients – only one web host, only one party planner, etc. so she can really focus her attention on them.Make sure that the way you are cold-calling people fits with your brand. Don’t try to be something your not.Bridget suggests offering something for free when you cold call – she chooses to offer them an audit for free. Treat it like hospitality – here is a tray of hors-d’oeuvres … but don’t require them to take it! Offer the help but let them decline without feeling bad about it.Another option is to offer your services at a discounted rate on a limited trial basis, and then if they like your work, they can do a full sign up at full price and if they’re not happy, they’re free to move on to something else.Jason: How do you send out a referral and know that the person you are referring them to is able/willing to do the work?Bridget: I refer them, but it’s up to the person I’m referring to decide if they are able to do it. To her, being resourceful is part of her brand. (Sidenote: Don’t pass on terrible clients!)Jason: If I’m going to be the ‘Angie’s List’ of WordPress, I like to make sure that the person I’m handing clients off to is actually willing and able to do the work.Bridget used to have a ‘Guru Referral’ page and would ask people if they wanted to be listed. Beyond the referral to the expert, she’s not responsible. It’s up to them and the client to see if they are compatible and can work together.Bridget: In all business, it’s very important not to burn your bridges – be very careful how you treat your clients and competitors. Jason: It’s okay to put “caution tape” in front of the bridge if you need to maintain the relationship but maybe hold on referring people! Bridget: everyone has a preference, never say never to referring someone!Have a portfolio – and ask your clients if you can list them on your page! It helps people to know your style and if you are a good fit for them.What matters to you the most? Bridget: I care about mentoring people – if anyone does well, then we all do well!Remember that when you cold call someone, you’re putting them in a defensive position.Sometimes you have to speak up for yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.Try: I would love to work with you – maybe we can help each other out! (But make sure your website is ready for when they come to check you and your business out). Or say, I love what you’ve built with your brand – I’d love to be part of what you are doing and help grow your brandPublicly posting your prices gives you a starting place and a talking point, it opens up discussion. Don’t be afraid to post your prices on your website.Be discerning, don’t indiscriminately reach out to people – make sure they’re a good fit for what you have to offer and what your passionate about. You want your passions to align with your client = synergy!To find your ideal client, you need to be self-aware – and sometimes that means reaching out to and brainstorming with your friends. We mentor and bounce off each other in order to make each other better!Find your peer-counselors (and/or friends) and be vulnerable and honest with them.   House guests and breakfast can be a tricky combination. The Dinner Sisters offer three suggestions to serve for that first meal with your guests in the morning, including something to satisfy a whole bunch of coffee drinkers. Cold Brew Coffee : NYT Food Cold brew coffee is a hands-off solution for two to a whole bunch of guests. Make the concentrate a day ahead and have Tips: Plan a day ahead of time- it takes at least 12 hours to brew. You can make up to a gallon of coffee at a time, giving you up to 32 servings. Not necessary- you can make as much or as little as you like. Try a nice carafe for this- keep your eyes peeled at Ikea or thrift stores for nice but affordable options. Here's a smaller option from Ikea or if you're making a large batch use a beverage dispenser. Baked Challah French Toast: Food52 French toast for breakfast is delicious but takes a lot of time at the stove. Do a baked challah french toast for a one dish make-ahead wonder. Tips: Make this the night before and just bake in the morning. Give yourself time to bake in the morning- this takes about an hour from start to finish. But! It’s all hands off time. Round out the meal with some eggs baked in muffin tins. Check out a method similar to what Betsy uses here: Oven Baked Eggs. Heidi Swanson’s Baked Oatmeal: Food52 Baked oatmeal is another good recipe to make ahead and bake in the morning. Tips: Make this the night before and bake in the morning. You can get this on the table in 45 minutes. Let the baked oatmeal rest for at least 15 minutes or it will be soupy and sad. Use frozen berries if fresh aren’t in season. Episode 11: Breakfast for Dinner: Pancakes, Breakfast Pizza and Frittata Breakfast for dinner can be a welcome treat during the week and the Dinner Sisters have three recipes that go beyond scrambled eggs and toast. In the Smorgasboard, the Dinner Sisters welcome their first guest to the podcast who is an expert on all things Skinny Taste (and just happens to be a long-time Friend of the Sisters). We’ll dig into pancakes, frittata and even a breakfast pizza. This week we cooked... Rye and Bacon Pancakes with Blueberries from Half Baked Harvest Pancakes are made little heartier and dinner-worthy with rye flour and bacon. Fresh blueberries and maple syrup add a sweet touch. Kids really liked the fun of bacon baked right into the pancakes! Tips: Rye flour isn’t in everyone’s pantry. Substitute whole wheat flour for a similar texture and taste or lighten up the recipe with all white flour. Slightly undercooking the bacon the first time will ensure it doesn’t burn when you cook it the second time with the pancakes. Breakfast Pizza- Skinnytaste Who can argue with pizza for dinner? Especially one with bacon and eggs on top. Skinnytaste uses her signature greek yogurt dough to lighten up a pizza night. The dough does not use yeast so this is a quick way to make pizza any day of the week. Tips: Make sure to use nonfat Greek yogurt. Other fat content or styles of yogurt may not have great results. Kate didn’t taste the tang of the yogurt but Betsy did- pick mild yogurt if you have a preference. This dough could be a flexible base for other toppings- like Margarita pizza with tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella. The Only Frittata Recipe You’ll Ever Need: Epicurious Frittatas are one of those recipes that’s nice to have in your back pocket. Have some eggs in the fridge? Great! You’re ready for dinner. This is a basic frittata formula with some ideas to get you started. Tips: Print or save the infographic to have on hand for quick reference. This reheated well for breakfast or a packed lunch the next day. Make sure the ingredients are bite-sized. Bigger pieces in the frittata weren’t all that appetizing. Episode 4: You NEED to try this Famous (and famously simple) Red Sauce

Episode 4: Instant Pot Polenta and the Best Red Sauce Kate gets ambitious with her Instant Pot and makes a double batch of polenta while Betsy explores her interpretation of a legendary red sauce. We also make a great weeknight combo of pan-seared tilapia and roasted green beans with fresh garlic. Rounding out the week, we cook a veggie-friendly Polenta Florentine that would make a nice dinner to have when friends are over. In the smorgäsbȯrd we talk about a family tradition that has roots in our German heritage and is an Instagram darling.    This week we cooked... Pan Seared Tilapia : All Recipes and Roasted Green Beans with Fresh Garlic: Epicurious This is less a recipe than two techniques. Pan seared tilapia is a quick and flavorful way to serve fish. Roasting green beans deepens their flavor and makes a workhorse vegetable a little special for a weeknight. Tips: Start your oven ASAP. Get the temperature up, then throw in the green beans. You can sear the tilapia in about 10 mins so make sure your green beans get a head start. If your fish is frozen, you can thaw quickly using a hot water thaw- place your fish in a sealed plastic bad and submerge in hot water, changing the water frequently. Make sure you cook the fish soon after thawing- do not hold in the refrigerator.   Polenta Florentine: The Kitchn Florentine usually refers to a dish with spinach in some form or another and in this recipe is combined with a luxurious bechamel sauce. Creamy sauce and spinach with a baked polenta makes this a recipe for the comfort food files.   Tips: Make 2 cups of dry polenta using the Instant Pot polenta recipe (using 8 cups water) and reserve half of it for the Polenta Florentine. Spread the hot polenta on a greased or silicone lined half sheet tray and cut into squares when cool. Tile into a baking dish and you’re ready for Polenta Florentine. This is a completely satisfying vegetarian main dish but one could successfully add cooked, crumbled italian sausage with the spinach. See the additional show notes for side salad ideas.   Marcela Hazan’s Tomato Sauce: NYT Cooking and Instant Pot Polenta: Bon Appetit This simple tomato sauce is the darling of many a food blogger. For good reason! Marcella Hazan was a groundbreaker for Italian cooking in the US. This particular recipe is short on ingredients yet long on flavor. Making polenta in the Instant Pot is a convenient way to make polenta without standing at the stove. Tips: Make a double batch of polenta with two cups of dry polenta and eight cups of water in the Instant Pot (or on the stovetop, just make sure you have a big enough saucepan). When the polenta is done, pour half of it onto a silpat (if you have it)  or lightly greased sheet pan. Chill in the fridge for an hour or so. Use a 2 1/2 inch or so round cookie cutter to cut out rounds or just cut into 2 inch squares. Tile the polenta in an 8 inch baking dish- about 5-6 pieces in three rows. Don't throw away the scraps! Tuck them underneath and around the bigger pieces. Cover the pan and pop in the refrigerator until you are ready to make polenta florentine. Don't skimp or substitute - the recipe works just as written. (I’m especially talking about the butter- it’s essential in this amount. Use the digital display board to show bios of the employees and results and games of all local sports teams, a variety of music, things that the clients reading the scrolling bios will bond with. Jeneen Haven – Another Inspiring Story of Transformation Real people making real like changes and delivering strategies and tips. Jeneen found Fitlandia on Facebook as she was looking a support group that aligned with her beliefs of eating whole food, not a diet club, or anything fad-like. She joined the Fitlandia FB group and connected with Christa. Jeneen now works as a holistic health coach and shares her journey of weight loss and what she has discovered along the way about herself and her relationship with food.  Jeneen’s Transformation Journey Over 10 years ago, Jeneen and her family moved from the San Francisco Bay area to Boise, ID to start a business. She encountered winter for the first time, the challenges of entrepreneurship and a life that felt out of control. She realized that the one thing she had control over was herself. She weighed 230 pounds, felt embarrassed and ashamed; like she didn’t belong or wasn’t good enough to be with the other moms at her children’s school or at church. It was at that moment she decided that she was done being fat. Jeneen took an honest look at herself and acknowledged that she was obese. She bought a YMCA membership, made a green smoothie daily, dropped the older kids at school each day and went directly to the gym. She checked her younger ones into daycare and hit the treadmill daily. Jeneen didn’t like the treadmill, but she did like “Law and Order” – and would watch the hour-long show before exiting the machine to get her children from daycare. They would then eat a healthy lunch, vegetable snacks in the afternoon, and a plant-based, protein evening meal with the entire family. She repeated this routine for ten months and dropped 80 pounds. There was no magic – just positive, healthy changes. Jeneen’s Beliefs Around Food Food is love We celebrate with food It’s a way to connect with her children Being a good mother by baking homemade goods Sweet rolls Sugar cookies Granola with honey, oats wheat flour and dried berries Calorie-dense foods Grain-based diet Jeneen’s health transformation came when she let go of grains and began emphasizing veggies instead. Christa reminds us to, “Make every plate 50-75% vegetables, whether you are eating paleo, vegan or Whole 30.” And the importance of limiting fruits – it’s not the adage of “eat your fruits and vegetables,” its now, eat your vegetables and occasionally some fruit. The fructose in fruits can easily be stored as fat unless we are moving enough to actually burn the sugar. Your Family Should be Your “Why” and Not Your “Why Not” For years, Jeneen used her family and being a mom as an excuse not to take care of herself. “How can I put my kids in daycare?” “How can I not bake for my kids?” “How can I not decorate cookies on Valentine’s Day?” “How can I be so selfish?” Using Weight as a Protective Shield Jeneen’s feelings of not being as good, as pretty, or as organized as the other moms were the beliefs that kept her obese. The weight created a buffer to take herself out of the comparison with other women/moms who she felt she didn’t stack up against. Jeneen’s mother is obese and growing up she felt a connection with her at a core level. She had fear that her mother wouldn’t love her if she lost weight and changed “tribes.” Lasting Changes Once Jeneen started to experience the increased confidence and freedom of releasing the weight, she could reap all the benefits of a healthy lifestyle; a few of them include: Shopping for clothes in regular stores Eating healthy and exercising to get off medications Endorphins kicking in Exercise increased from walking to weight lifting = feeling strong! Christa gives a shout-out to resistance training, which supports the brain on so many levels. The benefit we women get with developing our strength and our muscles is so amazing. Not Feeling Deprived During Jeneen’s weight loss journey, she allowed herself a weekly treat of boneless buffalo wings. After eating healthy all week, she and a girlfriend would meet and share a basket of wings. This helped her to stay on track while enjoying the social connection with her good friend. She also had a weekly date night with her husband and she would choose a salad and protein. These activities were a testimony that she could still enjoy foods she loved, but in the right proportion. There are general guidelines that create the highest level of success for most people, but then it’s about creating a lifestyle and an eating plan that works for life. It’s important to understand what works for you and what your triggers are Emotions Drive Specific Cravings Angry = crave spicy Stressed = crave salty Sad = crave sweets Happy = crave sweets This discovery helped Jeneen realize that not only did she crave these types of foods at specific instances, but that she is now more mindful of using any type of food to numb emotions. Become curious to when, what, why we are eating. What’s going on? What are the feelings? On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview David Ralph, who is a financial trainer-turned-full time podcaster. During the show, David and I discuss podcasting philosophy and freestyling, the art of the interview, releasing average shows, self-editing, new and noteworthy hype, and longevity in podcasting.   Main Questions Asked: Talk about your podcasting philosophy and why you like ‘freestyle.' Do you have any ‘I don't know what to ask next' moments? What are your tips for staying inspired and keeping up with the podcasting workload? Talk about the concept of the ‘Avatar.' Talk about how you introduce your podcast guests and how that affects the show.   Key Lessons Learned: Conversational Podcasts Conversation develops into relationships, and then into business and sales. The true value of a podcast comes not just from talking but building relationship bridges. As a podcaster, you should treat interviewing as an art. To have a conversational interview, you have to really listen.   Taking Control As an interviewer, it is not just about asking questions but also taking control of the interview. Consider making a lengthy introduction in order to tell your guest's story before they get to it. Guests often tell stories that they have told hundreds of times before. If you tell the story for them, then they have nothing to ‘hide behind' and are forced to provide new content.   Releasing Average Shows Releasing an episode you aren't happy with shows the journey. The end product of a show is different for every listener. Listeners will still find value in every episode, even if it isn't a home run.   Self-Edit & Improve It is possible to train yourself to speak in a fluent and engaging manner instead of taking the ‘ums and ahs' out in post-production. Fine-tuning your super-talent will separate you from the masses. David listens to each of his shows twice in order to improve his presentation. If you want to get better at your own podcast, you need to listen back to your own shows and pick out the faults. If you're happy with your first podcast episode, you probably waited too long to launch.   New and Noteworthy This is overhyped in iTunes and often gives new shows a false boost. A successful podcaster is someone who continues to podcast past the first 8 weeks.   The Avatar There's a lot of work in finding your avatar, but not a lot in understanding yourself. The key failing is that people are trained to go for the ‘avatar' character. A lot of podcasters don't look at themselves, and instead create content for others, which leads to them being bored as a host or without subject breadth.   Introducing the Guests                                                                                    Introducing the guest sets the tone for the entire interview and shows that the host is in control. The last two words of an introduction should be the guest's name. Take the bio and replace with ‘he' or ‘she,' and make it exciting. Think about how the professional late night talk show hosts introduce their guests.   Common Problems Podcasters sounding bored and formulaic. Podcasters seem to base their presentation on new media rather than old media.   David's Tips Make your show as generic as possible so it doesn't date. Can it be listened to in 5 years and still be relevant? You have to gain the skills of becoming a host before you gain the skills of becoming a guest. Hosts lead the conversation. In fact, Lakisha tells us ... the cupcakes James ordered (420 cherry cola and 420 chocolate chunk) were created specifically for Bron's foundation -- and a portion of the daily sales of those cupcakes are donated to charity as well. Leinart is clearly pissed about comment Dean Cain made to TMZ Sports. He said Johnny Manziel should be careful about running with the Hollywood crowd because he wouldn't want to end up out of the NFL like Matt Leinart. Now, Leinart has gone to Twitter to respond to Cain -- and it's clear he's pissed -- saying, "Put 7 years in, pretty sure that's 7 more than 99% of the world." Then came the personal shots at Dean "Some people should stick to their day job because they couldn't cut it!" He added, "Stick to being D list!" Have you heard about the Baltimore Ravens fan cruise to the Bahamas? Part of the entertainment was an adults-only "game show" ... which included a low-budget drag competition.
