Understanding the Challenges of Black Bear Management: Insights from Stephen Vantassel In this comprehensive episode of the Living the Wildlife podcast, Stephen Vantassel, CWCP, ACE, shares his extensive expertise in wildlife control, focusing on the critical and timely issue of black bear management. As black bear populations continue to grow and reestablish themselves across the United States, their presence is increasingly felt in regions that were once devoid of large predators. This resurgence presents unique challenges and opportunities for wildlife management professionals and the general public, all of which are explored in depth during this episode. The Resurgence of Black Bear Populations Over the past few decades, black bear populations have made a remarkable comeback in various parts of the United States. Once limited to remote wilderness areas, these large mammals are now increasingly found in suburban and even urban settings. This growth in population is a testament to successful conservation efforts but also brings new challenges, especially in areas where human-bear interactions are becoming more common. Stephen Vantassel opens the discussion by highlighting the current state of black bear management. He explains that while the increasing presence of black bears is a positive sign of ecological restoration, it also raises important questions about how to manage these animals effectively. The primary responsibility for black bear management falls to state and federal agencies, which often limits the involvement of private wildlife control professionals. Despite this, the need for expertise in handling human-bear interactions is growing, making it crucial for private professionals to understand their role within the regulatory frameworks that govern wildlife management. The Role of State and Federal Agencies in Black Bear Management Stephen Vantassel emphasizes that black bear management is primarily overseen by state and federal agencies. These agencies are responsible for setting regulations, conducting research, and implementing conservation strategies to ensure the well-being of black bear populations while minimizing conflicts with humans. However, this centralized management approach often means that private wildlife control professionals have limited opportunities to engage directly in black bear management. Despite these limitations, Stephen argues that private professionals can still play a significant role in supporting state and federal efforts. By understanding the regulations and building strong relationships with these agencies, private professionals can contribute valuable insights and expertise to help manage black bear populations more effectively. Additionally, they can assist in educating the public about safe practices for living and recreating in areas where black bears are present. Addressing the Risks of Black Bear Attacks One of the most pressing concerns surrounding the resurgence of black bears is the potential for dangerous encounters, including fatal attacks. In this episode, Stephen delves into the sobering topic of black bear attacks, providing a detailed examination of recent incidents. He discusses the factors that contribute to these tragic outcomes, including the behavior of both bears and humans. While black bears are generally less aggressive than other bear species, such as grizzlies, the risks associated with encountering them should not be underestimated. Stephen underscores the importance of understanding bear behavior and the circumstances that can lead to aggressive encounters. For example, black bears may become more dangerous when they feel threatened, when they are protecting their young, or when they have become habituated to human food sources. Strategies to Reduce the Risk of Black Bear Attacks To mitigate the risks of black bear attacks, Stephen discusses various strategies and research-based principles that can be applied in ...

(Fremont County, WY)- Hey there, fellow adventurers! Charene here, the Adventure Queen, and let me tell you, even queens have their moments of uncertainty. So picture this: I'm out in the wild, soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Wyoming's wilderness during fall fishing escapades. But then it hits me – am I truly prepared to handle the wild's most majestic yet potentially dangerous residents, the bears? I know having bear spray is something I don't go into the wild without, but let's be real, I wouldn't know the first thing about deploying it effectively if my fly rods depended on it. Cue my saving grace: Rene Schell with Wyoming Game and Fish. Archery season and fall fishing are incredible times to be out and about, but they also heighten the chances of bear encounters. You see, as the temperature dips, these magnificent creatures gear up for hibernation, which can make them a bit more… let's say, unpredictable. Rene sheds light on the nitty-gritty of bear behavior during this time. But let's get back to my bear spray dilemma – turns out I'm not the only one who's been a bit clueless about this. Rene's tips on bear spray usage are worth the reminder and listen. From how to properly store and carry it, to the right way of holding and spraying the darn thing, she covers it all. And, my fellow adventurers, bear spray isn't just some accessory to dangle on your belt like a shiny trinket; it's a powerful tool that can keep us safe and respect the wild animals we so admire. So, if you're anything like me and need a crash course in bear safety, dive into the wealth of information Rene and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department offer at wgfd.wyo.gov. In this episode of Walking Distance presented by The Trek and hosted by Blissful Hiker (Alison Young), we are joined by Tom Smith, a professor of wildlife sciences at Brigham Young University in Utah. Initially Smith's research specialities included bighorn sheep and caribou, but when he began working at Katmai National Park in Southwest Alaska, he shifted to studying the most common animal there: bears. In the last 20 years, Smith has conducted research in Alaska, India, and in bear country in the lower 48 states.  Blissful Hiker covers why it's important to have bear deterrent, rules of thumb about making noise while on the trail, methods to bear-proof a campsite, and explains what conventional bear wisdom still holds true. Interview with Tom Smith 2:00 - Introduction to ‘bear country' and Tom Smith 3:42 - What are your thoughts on Timothy Treadwell, and his involvement in Katmai National Park with bear environmentalism? 5:12 - Our podcast is for hikers and backpackers, and to help people feel safe and capable outdoors. One thing you've already mentioned is bear deterrent, so could you break down what bear spray is and how to use it best? 9:00 - I've read articles about people spraying bear spray around their tent, which is definitely not the correct use. Is there data on that? 12:00 - Does bear spray train bears to stay away from humans? Is there any data that bears might associate the pain of bear spray with humans if they experience it? 12:50 - I'm a bit embarrassed to share this story, but last July I was in Glacier National Park, and I hiked alone at dawn in bear country. I didn't see any bears, but I was playing with fire, wouldn't you say? 17:22 - Glacier rangers told me that bears are curious, and that bear bells and some other noises like singing might actually attract them. What do you know about that? 19:32 - People who go on long distance trails, for instance I was on the Continental Divide Trail, often hike alone. I wonder if there's a rule of thumb about making noise if you're alone and you want to ward bears off? 22:24 - You said something really interesting, that in Yellowstone or Glacier the bears are more aggressive than on the coastline of Alaska, for instance. Why is that? 26:53 - We've spoken a lot about food storage on Walking Distance, from cooking and eating away from where you camp, using a bear can, and pack away smelly items. But you've mentioned other things that aren't as obvious, such as not using very smelly shampoo, and that gas canisters can attract bears. 33:47 - Let's shift to bear encounters; as you've said, most bears are risk averse, and they don't want to fight with us. But in the rare instance that a bear is charging you, what do you do? 36:50 - How do you bear-proof a campsite? 39:40 - Would you even use your bear-proofing methods in Montana? 41:40 - The most surprising advice I read in your work is that the conventional wisdom of playing dead around a bear is wrong, that you should always stand your ground. Can you explain? 46:20 - If we were to sum all this up for our listeners, I'd say to be aware in bear country, carry your deterrent at the ready, hike with another person and have a plan of how to defend yourself. 47:08 - What are the differences in behavior in bear types? What is the reason that a bear would be clearly predatory, is that rare? 50:13 - Although it's rare that you will have a bear encounter, carrying bear spray is like wearing your seatbelt in the car: it might save your life. Did you know bears can, and do, come out of their dens in the winter? If you're shocked, we got you covered! Wildlife Specialist, Kim Titchener, who is the Owner of Bear Safety and More, is back on the podcast for the third time to help us navigate wildlife safety in winter!    Learn about Bear Safety, Episode 5: https://kidswhoexplore.com/podcasts/ep-5-bear-safety-with-kim-titchene%E2%80%AAr%E2%80%AC/  Learn about Wildlife Safety While Camping, Episode 15: https://kidswhoexplore.com/podcasts/ep-15-wildlife-safety-while-camping-with-kim-titchener/    If you really want to see wildlife in winter, look more into the community of Churchill, Manitoba, where the community truly lives with the polar bears!    Top Safety Reminders:  Always have bear spray accessible (not tucked away), and know how to use it  Make lots of noise, regularly (listen to today's episode, to hear Kim's “Zombie Voice”)  Be alert  Keep kids and pets close   Teach kids: Stay safe as a group and look big, so you're not misidentified as a “deer”  Keep scents and food away (even think of fruit trees in the backyard if kids are playing alone in an area with wildlife)  Carry a communication device  Carry a first aid kit (and take a wilderness first aid class)  Think about where you are and what animals are in your area.    Hibernation Learning Time:  You can still get attacked by bears in winter (so, don't let down your guard in the cold)  Bear hibernation is called “denning”  What is Bear Denning:  Bear heart rate slows down  Bear lives off of fat storages  Bear stays in a very calm state (unless disturbed)  Bear can come outside of den to cool off, or repair den from flooding   Bear gives birth in den   How to Avoid Dens:  Stay on the trail! Most dens will not be close to a trail  Downhill backcountry skiiers and ice climbers are more likely to disturb a bear den, so carry bear spray  Talk to local authorities and find out if they've done any denning maps  98% of people who encounter bears and administer their bear spray, walk away with no injuries. Bear spray has not been scientifically tested on other animals, but Kim has video evidence of it working on other animals, like cougars, for example.     Reminder:  Check if you bear spray is expired  If it is expired, call your local municipal government to find out locations that accept it, to dispose of it properly  Recommendations:  Podcast: Ologies with Alie Ward https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ologies-with-alie-ward/id1278815517  Book: The Orange Shirt Story by Phyllis Webstad     Follow Kim at:  IG: @bearsafetyadventures Twitter: @bearconflicts Facebook: Bear Safety and More Learn more at: www.recsafewithwildlife.com and www.bearsafety.com    Thank you to Scat Belt for sponsoring today's podcast! Back in Episode 5, we learned from Wildlife Specialist, Kim Titchener, who is the Owner of Bear Safety and More. In this episode, we dive deeper into wildlife safety when it comes to camping. Kim camps in all seasons and is building a cabin right in the heart of grizzly bear habitat, so she knows a thing or two first-hand!! The safety we talk about applies to all wildlife, even though we specifically address bears most often. Before Heading Out Camping: Find out if your camp site is in bear country Find out if there are bear warnings for the camp area (if so, don't go) Contact campsite beforehand and ask them what has been going on at their site (Provincial or National Parks are often good spots)   Before Setting Up: Check site to see if anything has been eaten, if there is a carcass nearby, if birds of prey are flying overhead, or if there is bear food, like berries, near your site…all of these are very dangerous signs and the bear will come back Once Camping: Be self-sufficient and keep your food away from animals with bear-resistant garbages or bear lockers If there are none of the above, you will need to know where to put your garbage…the car is fine for some locations, but some places in the USA, bears have learned how to get into cars – in that case, you will need to look into a bear hang or bear keg Keep anything with scent away from campsite (even to go on a walk or to the washroom): food, toiletries, cans of kerosene, etc. Make sure where you are eating and where you are sleeping are separate from each other Have bear spray nearby at all times – even on the picnic table with an air horn – and then by your head when in the tent at night, with a glow-in-the-dark safety Keep kids supervised, and stay together Keep dogs on leash Leave no trace, and pack up everything you brought in when leaving *When hiking, have food sealed up in good containers* *Teach kids bear safety, without scaring them – Give them knowledge to make lots of noise, make themselves big, back away, get to safety* *Take a course to feel knowledgeable on what to do in any encounter* Remember that it is also dangerous for wildlife to come near your site, as they will have to be shot, or put in a zoo, and no longer be allowed to live on the land. Don't feed bears/coyotes/wolves/birds/etc. Stay in groups! Some other great tips Kim has for getting kids outside: Have layers for them and be prepared for all weather conditions Carry a first aid kit, and bliss wool for blisters Play games and make checklists for kids to look out for, and check off, on the trail Bring stuffed animal, for the kids to focus on and take care of (take selfie with stuffie!)…but, do not leave stuffie on site Learn more at: www.recsafewithwildlife.com and www.bearsafety.com Follow Kim at: IG: @bearconflicts and @bearsafetyadventures Thank you to Scat Belt for sponsoring today's podcast! When we are getting outdoors, whether it's hiking, biking, fishing, camping, or any other nature adventure, it's important to remember that we are visitors in the homes of the wildlife who roam there.     How much do you truly know about bears? Do you know how to avoid encounters? Do you know how to handle encounters you come across?    Thankfully, Kim Titchener, owner of Bear Safety & More, gives us a rundown of what to do to protect ourselves and our families in bear territory.    Some tips on the trail: -Keep children attended (do not let them run ahead) -Bear bells and music are not helpful -Use your voice regularly; more people are helpful for multiple tones of voices; the natural sounds of adventure, like branches cracking and footsteps is also helpful  -Have a communication device with you (ie. Garmin inReach) -Each adult should have a can of bear spray (and know how to use it)    Some tips before you hit the trail: -Let someone know where you're going and when you'll be back -Let someone know your vehicle type and license plate -Explore with ID on you    This episode also briefly touches on defensive versus non-defensive bear encounters, and how and when to safely back away, versus make yourself intimidating (and, of course, get your bear spray ready).    Links:  -Join the RecSafe with Wildlife Community for free today - www.bearsafety.com or www.recsafewithwildlife.com  -Scat Belt - Thank you for being a wonderful sponsor - www.scatbelt.com -Garmin inReach - https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/561269  Instagram Links: @bearconflicts @bearsafetyadventures @scatbelt

In public relations, "going rogue" is a notion that sets teeth on edge for most PR practitioners. But sometimes, when the conventional approach fails, the only way forward is to throw carefully-laid plans out the window and wing it. In 2013, when a government shutdown closed the National Parks to visitors on the eve of her long-planned PR junket, (W)right On Communications founder Julie Wright faced a choice. She could either abandon months of planning and waste an opportunity to showcase some of California's most epic scenery to a hand-picked group of influential travel writers, or she could bend the rules, take a calculated risk and skirt some barricades. So she went rogue, and the trip that resulted was as hair-raising as it was memorable. In this episode of Lead Balloon, she shares the epic tale, as well as the important lessons she learned about asking forgiveness instead of permission... and BEAR SAFETY. Travel writers Diane Lebow and Laura Kiniry also share their recollections of the trip, and explain why every PR practitioner needs a little bit of "rogue" in them. Parks Canada has just announced that it has opened the gates and finally allowed its growing herd of wild bison out of their enclosure and, for the first time, letting them wander somewhat freely within the park, at least within a 1,200 sq km release zone. The release has happened a little later than planned. The calving season was delayed and while last year saw its first birth on Earth Day, this year calving only began on July 15. In a recent article in The Province, Banff's Resource Conservation Manager was quoted as saying: “We’ve been expecting calves this spring, but it’s certainly been a little later than we saw last year, but because these are young cows, we also anticipated the calving dates might be stretched out over a longer period this year. “The first two calves were born July 15 and the last of the three was born on the 19th.” As of July 23, Park staff were hoping to see as many as 6 more additional calves. All of that changed on August 1st when Parks Canada staff opened the gate to allow the growing herd to leave the enclosure and begin to explore their 1,200 sq. km soft-release zone. Almost immediately, the bison zigged when the Park's staff wanted them to zag. According to the Rocky Mountain Outlook: "The bison reportedly headed toward Scotch Camp, but were stopped on the Snow Creek Summit before being herded back towards the upper Panther River Valley." Park staff realized they would need to guide the bison during the early part of their release. They don't want them to move east towards the plains because they have no legal status there. Bears, Buffaloberry, and Bikes Well, it's already happened this year! On Saturday, July 21 a mountain biker collided at high speed with a black bear at the Canmore Nordic Centre. Just last week, I warned that the buffaloberry season was upon us and that we need to begin to be extra vigilant. According to a story in the Rocky Mountain Outlook, Alberta Environment and Parks human-wildlife conflict specialist Jay Honeyman stated: "They were coming downhill at a fairly good clip and came over a rise and there was the bear…He literally hit and flattened the bear and got knocked off his bike." Luckily, the rider had bear spray on his person and he got ready to deploy it, but the stunned bear took off before he needed to spray it. He also saw a second bear that also ran away from the commotion. Here are 10 tips for staying safe while riding and hiking during buffaloberry season: Make lots of noise. Since bears are not paying attention to what's happening around them while they're busy mowing down their berry feast, it's important that we make lots and lots of noise; and not all noise is created equal. The best sound is the sound of your voice. Bears know that humans mean danger and if they know you're coming before you arrive, then they'll usually move away from the trail until you pass. You probably won't even know they were there. Bear bells are just marketing hype and they won't keep you safe. Just throw them in the garbage. You're more likely to be killed by your hiking companions for the sheer irritation they provide. Remember that sound may not travel as fast as you do. Much like the sound of an approaching train, it isn't always as evident when the train is approaching. The bear may not hear you if you're flying down the hill. Slow down, and if possible, stop before the descent and give a loud "Hey bear" before you slowly go down the hill. Learn to recognize buffaloberry. If you learn one plant in the mountains, make it buffaloberry. If the trail is lined with these tasty morsels, then the chance of meeting a bear goes up dramatically. If the trail is berry free, it doesn't mean there won't be a bear, but the odds at this time of year will have the bear focusing on berry-rich sites. Make sure you have bear spray and know how to use it. It's also critical that the spray is on your person and not on your bike. This recent encounter really brings this to the forefront. The rider collided with the bear and was ejected from his bike. Had the spray been on the forks or handlebars of the bike, he would have been separated from it just when he needed it most. The same goes with spray on or in your pack. Encounters happen fast and without warning. Have it on your body and you'll have it when you need it. You also want to practice so you don't have to think about how to deploy it when the time comes. Head to the high country. While this tip may not apply to mountain bikers, it definitely is a good one for hikers. Since the berries happen at lower elevations, this is a good time to go high. While the berries are more common in the valley bottom, they can extend into the subalpine as well. This is a great time to bag those peaks and passes. Trails like the Centennial Ridge Trail (the highest trail in the Canadian Rockies), Ha Ling (check the trail report as they are doing trail maintenance), and scrambles like the East End of Rundle are perfect choices. Keep in mind that the approaches will likely be at a lower elevation so keep an eye on the foliage and if buffaloberries are present, make a ton of noise. Watch for droppings. When bears are mowing down massive quantities of berries, let's just say, it keeps them regular. Watch for dark red piles of former buffaloberries. If it looks fresh, then it's likely the bear may still be in the area. Look for moving bushes. Very large bears can completely disappear behind a buffaloberry bush. Sometimes the easiest way to spot the bear is to not look for the bear. Look for something that doesn't belong - like one bush moving when none of the others are. On a still day, this can often be a sure sign that something is hanging out behind the bush. Keep dogs on leash; or better yet, leave them at home. I know you want to hike with your dog, but every encounter with wildlife has a worse outcome when a dog is involved. They are likely to be perceived as a threat by a bear and now you are also perceived as a threat. Take Fido to the off-leash area and give him a good run there. Be aware though that the margins of the Grassi Lakes off-leash area are also a great habitat for buffaloberries so watch if he's playing too close to this area. Leave your earbuds at home. One of the most dangerous things you can do in bear country is to wear earbuds when walking on trails - even within the townsite boundaries. When you wear earbuds, you're not aware of the sounds around you. You are not paying attention to what's happening around you. Earbuds put you at a much higher risk of a negative encounter, and you won't even hear it approaching. When you're out in nature, pay attention to nature, and stay safe. Respect closures. During buffaloberry season, it's much easier to manage people than bears. Unfortunately, in the recent past, locals and tourists alike have violated closures with the mistaken belief that they don't apply to them. Alberta Environment and Parks, Parks Canada, and the Towns of Canmore and Banff take these closures very seriously. If you're caught you will be charged! Don't put a bear's life at risk simply because you were too lazy to walk around the closure. Always remember that you are also a risk by ignoring closure signs. So this week, you will love our tip about a product that combines an ultra-durable Bounty paper towel with the grease-fighting power of Dawn dish soap. It comes from our friend Joette George, who we met on a recent camping trip. [spp-timestamp time="8:00"] The product is called “Bounty with Dawn” and the company claims it produces results that are four times cleaner than a used dishcloth. It is the thickest, strongest Bounty available on the market, with 70% more fibers in each sheet and cloth-like durability to stay intact while cleaning. Bounty with Dawn can even be reused—simply rinse and wring the grease out to keep tackling any mess with just one sheet. Designed to leave virtually no streaks behind, Bounty with Dawn can be used on almost any surface. It is especially great for pots, pans, countertops, stovetops, glass, granite, stainless steel and mirrors. It's widely available in food, grocery and mass retailers all across North America or on Amazon, where you can get a roll of three for a little under $14. Be sure to send me your tips and suggestions for the RV lifestyle. You can use the “Leave Voicemail” link at Roadtreking.com. Just click it and then use the built-in microphone on your computer or mobile devise to record a message to me. You can do it over as many times as you want, until you are satisfied. And then you just click a button and it comes right to my email inbox. I love hearing from you! Jennifer's tip of the week is brought to you by RadPower Bikes (www.RadPowerBikes.com_… an electric bike manufacturer offering direct to consumer pricing on powerful premium electric bikes. LISTENER QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: A listener wanted to know why Alde hydronic heaters are not available on toy haulers. Mike explains the Alde system is now an aftermarket product; it must be built in to production coach. Right now, on RVs, its primarily available on Roadtreks and Winnebagos…mostly Class Bs. The bigger RVs are really boxes that are just bolted and welded on a frame. Class Bs are custom built. [spp-timestamp time="12:23"] Another listener asks about finding cheap places to boondock. Mike refers him to boondockerswelcome.com, harvesthosts.com and the following stories on the Roadtreking.com RV Travel Blog blog: [spp-timestamp time="15:15"] Campskunk's Ten Most Breathtaking Boondock RV Spots RV Boondocking in Non Traditional Ways Apps and Websites to find the perfect boondocking spot Boondocking 101: The Basics of Boondocking Podcast Episode Dispersed Camping in National Forests Sponsoring this part of the podcast is Van City RV in St. Louis, and their Partner Dealerships Creston RV in Kalispell, Montana, and Wagon Trail RV in Las Vegas. A.A. Milne wrote the poem that comprises the verses of this song. I added the chorus. It's a song dedicated to Stephen Colbert and his ever-vigilant efforts toward warning the public about Bear Safety. Friends and relatives helped out with the vocals and claps. I played the cowbell and bongos. The Variax bass provided the upright bass sounds, and for reasons of proper balance I played the acoustic guitar part on the Variax guitar. There's almost no effects, not even EQ, used except for on the lead vocal and low background vocal at the end, and a reverb over the whole thing. The guitar part is from a song I wrote 15 years ago that I long forgot, and it somehow made its way into this piece.
