Do you get energy when you are around someone who just loves what they do? After sitting down with Jack Daniel's Brand Ambassador Jed Lirette I had energy for days. Jed Lirette is Senior Homeplace Ambassador at the Jack Daniel Distillery. Every day looks a little different for Jed, whether he's conducting VIP tastings and barrel selections, leading press tours or participating in a Jack Daniel's commercial. When he's not making friends for the brand in Lynchburg, Jed represents the distillery at events in Nashville and beyond. Jed was hired as a tour guide for the distillery in 2015. Soon after, he became an official whiskey taster, heading to the quality control lab every Friday morning to sample freshly mellowed new whiskey. In 2019, he was named senior ambassador tour guide. Before his time at Jack, Jed was enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served 15 years in numerous IT roles, notably as a senior network engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jed was deployed to the UK, Dubai, Germany, Qatar and Afghanistan during his service. Jed may no longer have top-secret security clearance, but at Jack Daniel's, he's charged with upholding the values and traditions of a 156-year-old brand he's long admired. Jed's experience as a tour guide – and his curiosity about whiskey making and local lore – has ignited a passion for the brand and the place that he shares with visitors from around the world each day. A native of Houma, Louisiana, Jed has called the Lynchburg area home since 1985. Jed and his wife Maribeth live in Petersburg, Tennessee and have three children.

Martin Doyle's new book “Dirty Linen: The Troubles in my Homeplace” details the events of the troubles in his local area and the wide reaching effects that the conflict had on everyone's lives. In my personal opinion the book is one of the very finest works on the subject of troubles-era Northern Ireland and is a masterfully crafted collections of human stories in a non-partisan fashion. We speak about how Martin's area was terrorized by the infamous "Glennane Gang” and loyalist mass murderer Robin Jackson during the height of their carnage. Martin told me about the anti-catholic discrimination that he dealt in school and how everyday life would be altered by living in such tumultuous times.Martin also spoke about the multi century history of religious clash in Ireland especially in the north where many planters had been settled and how this sewed the seed for future conflict and violence.PLEASE SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A 5 STAR RATING TO HELP THE SHOW CONTINUE TO GROW***TIMESTAMPS*** 00:00 Background & “Dirty Linen” metaphor07:25 “Being aware of history but not weaponizing it”, The RUC father& son 14:10 Ways that life was disrupted by the conflict 22:10 Miami Showband Massacre & Stephen Travers 25:00 Religion as a proxy for other divisions + History of catholic/protestant relations in the north 32:25 Anti-catholic discrimination in Martin's school42:05 ROBIN JACKSON & THE GLENANNE GANG terrorizing Martin's area 49:10 1982 in Bainbridge town (b*mbed delivered by “Killing Rage” author Eamon Collins)1:01:20 FREEDOM FIGHTER/TERRORIST distinction 1:08:30 Filling in contextual holes in memory about his childhood

When have you experienced genuine belonging? Our answer to this question is a window into our community life. We all have a longing to belong and the church has historically been a place for building one's community. However, for progressive Christians, the church has sometimes been a place of dysfunction and spiritual abuse and was no longer a space for genuine community. But the longing for community persists. For the next two months, we will discuss what it means to create a culture of belonging where all people are welcome to be their authentic selves. In today's episode, we discuss the trauma's that we carry from church dysfunction and the importance of creating a church that is what bell hooks defines as a homeplace, a safe place where people can affirm one another and by doing so heal many of the wounds inflicted upon members of the community by the dehumanizing traumas of racism, sexism, classism, ableism, and queer hatred. Winchester is known largely for two things: the Civil War and being the birthplace of Patsy Cline. But as John's book shows, just as compelling are the stories of more recent inhabitants, including chefs, writers, and store owners. Homeplace shows how people in 21st century South are trying to make a living in a region undergoing severe political and economic change. Homeplace builds upon John's other writings, which often explore music. Jeff Tweedy, NRBQ, Buddy Bolden, and Margo Price are just some of the subjects he has previously written about. Perhaps not surprisingly, his current book project centers on the classic rock staple Creedence Clearwater Revival.

"My passport is green.

Mickey McCreanor, who runs Butterly's, a quaint pub in his small historic and famous hometown of Ardee, Co. Louth, Ireland, offers a unique glimpse of how small town Ireland is disappearing, a hostage to economic and political priorities. Barely an hour from Dublin, Mickey lashes out at the Greens -- and says Ardee’s big pressing challenge is more jobs. Mickey McCreanor sings a famous local ballad, The Turfman From Ardee to chastise the powers that be, and to highlight a lack of strong leadership to guide the economic future of his charming hometown. As Mickey takes us down memory lane, and talks about the amazing local characters, history, and Ardee’s extraordinary sporting legacy, he lays out a vision of two Irelands: In one Ireland are places like Dublin with strong growth and prosperity; in the other Ireland, small towns and rural, is slow growth and economic stagnation. About a decade after Ireland gradually recovered and was bailed out after a banking catastrophe and a worldwide financial crisis, central planners in Dublin and Brussels seem to have forgotten places like Ardee. Mickey says the industrial world has bypassed his beloved place. And listen to his captivating baritone singing voice, in this episode, as a gentle cry from the heart. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne/support

In the first sermon in the Advent series "I Won’t Be Home for Christmas,” Rev. Tom Are preaches about how Advent is our declaration that the world is not as God intends it to be. There is plenty of good in this world, but we are not home yet. As such, Advent expresses our impatience—a holy impatience with the way the world is today.
