The next day as they were leaving Bethany he was hungry. Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, he went over to see if he could find anything on it. When he reached it he found nothing but leaves; it was not the time for figs. And he said to it in reply, “May no one ever eat of your fruit again!” And his disciples heard it. Mark 11:12–14This is a very unique and interesting story. The first thing this tells us is that Jesus was fully human. As a man, He was hungry. But this story tells us much more than the simple fact that Jesus was hungry. He would have known that it was not the season for figs to grow, but He decided to look for a fig anyway. And when He found none, He cursed the fig tree and, as we read later in this chapter, the tree withered and died. This was a symbolic action for the sake of His disciples, in that His disciples heard Him curse the tree and later saw that the tree had withered.Saint Bede, an early Church Father, tells us that this action of Jesus had an allegorical purpose. The tree is symbolic of the many people Jesus encountered, and continues to encounter today, who failed to bear good fruit in their lives. They were the Pharisees and others who practiced their faith only in an external way. The leaves, Saint Bede tells us, were symbolic of the externals of the faith, and the lack of fruit was a symbol of the missing interior fruit of holiness and good works. This lesson tells us that Jesus is very demanding. He is determined to discover good fruit in our lives. He wants us to become authentically holy. And when He finds only the externals, He will rebuke us in love, taking even the externals away. What good fruit does our Lord want to find in your life? How does He want you to manifestly grow in holiness? Do you go through the motions, attend Mass, say some prayers, but fail to produce an abundance of virtue, compassion, mercy and goodness? Do you say you believe in our Lord but then fail to preach the holy Gospel with both your words and your actions? If our Lord were to come to you, as He came to this fig tree, what would He find?Being a Christian is not something that is exclusively between you and God. Being a Christian requires that you be so given over to the service of God and others that God is able to do incredible things through you. The Christian faith must produce good fruit in your life and through you in the lives of others. And it must do so in an abundant way.Reflect, today, upon the holy image of Jesus walking over to this fig tree inspecting it for a fig. See this tree as an image of your soul and see the hunger in the heart of our Lord. As He looks at you and your life, will He be satiated? Will He find holiness and manifest good works? Or will He find little to nothing other than external claims that you are a Christian? Commit yourself to an abundance of authentic and manifest holiness and our Lord’s hunger will be satiated. My demanding Lord, You call all Your followers to a holiness that is lived, transforming, manifest and fruitful for Your Kingdom. Help me to be a Christian not only in name but especially in action. May my life truly bear the good fruit of holiness and may that holiness become a means by which You feed the spiritual hunger of Your people. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

John 21:125 (ESV) Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples 21After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We will go with you. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5Jesus said to them, Children, do you have any fish? They answered him, No. 6He said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, It is the Lord! When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. 9When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish that you have just caught. 11So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. Now none of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you? They knew it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. Jesus and Peter 15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs. 16He said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep. 17He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? and he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. 18Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. 19(This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, Follow me. Jesus and the Beloved Apostle 20Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, Lord, who is it that is going to betray you? 21When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, Lord, what about this man? 22Jesus said to him, If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me! 23So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? 24This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. 25Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
The Fourth Sunday Of Lent (Mar. 14)Narrated by Pastor Roger TheimerWe Can’t, but Jesus CanYou shall not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14This commandment focuses on an area of our lives that is most sacred but most frequently abused. In commenting on this law, Jesus tells us (in Matthew 5:27-28) that even impure thoughts and desires are sinful. Who can plead “not guilty"?Let’s face it: We do not become sinners because we sin: no, we sin because we are sinful by nature. Try as we may, we cannot rid ourselves of sinful desires and deeds. Our annual Lenten pilgrimage brings to mind how deep is our sin and guilt and how great is the salvation Jesus has won for us by his wounds! When we realize that our best attempts at doing right are crippled by our sin, that is when we are drawn to the cross of Jesus. There we lay down our sins and are healed again by the wounds he suffered for us.REFLECT: How can you rid yourself of impure thoughts? PRAY: Thank you, my Savior, for coming to my rescue. Amen.Devotional content provided by Creative Communications for the Parish.

Psalm 34 | Esther 4.4-17 | Acts 18.1-11 | Luke 1.1-4 | Luke 3.1-14This week's song: Mona Reeves singing "Lift Your Eyes Up."
“The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.” Matthew 22:10-14This may be quite shocking at first. In this parable the king invited many to the wedding feast of his son. Many rejected the invitation. He then sent his servants out to gather anyone who would come and the hall was filled. But when the king came in, there was one not dressed in a wedding garment and we can see what happens to him in the passage above. Again, at first read this may be a bit shocking. Did this man really deserve to be bound hand and foot and thrown outside into the darkness where there is wailing and grinding of teeth, just because he didn’t have the right clothing on? Certainly not.Understanding this parable requires we understand the symbolism of the wedding garment. This garment is a symbol of one who is clothed in Christ and, specifically, one who is therefore filled with charity. There is a very interesting lesson to learn from this passage.First, the fact that this man was at the wedding feast means he responded to the invitation. This is an indication of faith. Therefore, this man does symbolize one who has faith. Second, the lack of a wedding garment means that he is one who has faith and believes all that God says, but has not allowed that faith to permeate his heart and soul to the point of producing true conversion and, therefore, true charity. It is the lacking of charity in the young man that condemns him.The interesting point is that it is possible for us to have faith, but to lack charity. Faith is believing what God reveals to us. But even the demons believe! Charity requires we embrace that will interiorly and let it transform our lives. This is an important point to understand because sometimes we can struggle with this same situation. At times we can find we believe on the level of faith, but are not living it. Both are required for a life of authentic holiness.Reflect, today, upon both your faith in all that God has spoken, and the charity that this hopefully produces in your life. Being a Christian means you let your faith sink from your head down to your heart and will.Lord, may I have deep faith in You and in all that You have spoken. May that faith sink into my heart producing love of You and others. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Galatians 3 3You witless Galatians! Who has bewitched you? King Jesus was portrayed on the cross before your very eyes! 2There's just one thing I want to know from you. Did you receive the spirit by doing the works of Torah, or by hearing and believing? 3You are so witless: you began with the spirit, and now you're ending with the flesh? 4Did you really suffer so much for nothing – if indeed it is going to be for nothing? 5The one who gives you the spirit and performs powerful deeds among you – does he do this through your performance of Torah, or through hearing and believing? 10Because, you see, those who belong to the ‘works-of-the-law' camp are under a curse! Yes, that's what the Bible says: ‘Cursed is everyone who doesn't stick fast by everything written in the book of the law, to perform it.' 11But, because nobody is justified before God in the law, it's clear that ‘the righteous shall live by faith'. 12The law, however, is not by faith: rather, ‘the one who does them shall live in them'. 13The Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law, by becoming a curse on our behalf, as the Bible says: ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.' 14This was so that the blessing of Abraham could flow through to the nations in King Jesus – and so that we might receive the promise of the spirit, through faith. The Bible for Everyone: A New Translation . SPCK. Kindle Edition. Grant, Lord, that we may hold to you without parting, worship you without wearying, serve you without failing; faithfully seek you, happily find you, and forever possess you, the only God, blessed now and for ever. John 21:1- 21After this, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the sea of Tiberias. This was how he showed himself. 2Simon Peter, Thomas (known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples, were all together. 3Simon Peter spoke up. ‘I'm going fishing,' he said. ‘We'll go with you,' they replied. So they went off and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. 4As dawn was breaking, Jesus stood beside the seashore, but the disciples didn't know that it was Jesus. 5‘Children,' said Jesus to them, ‘haven't you got anything to eat?' ‘No!' they replied. 6‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat,' he said, ‘and you'll find something.' So they cast the net; and now they couldn't draw it in because of the weight of the fish. 7So the disciple that Jesus loved spoke to Peter. ‘It's the master!' he said. When Simon Peter heard that it was the master, he wrapped his cloak around him (he had been naked for work), and threw himself into the sea. 8The other disciples brought the boat in to land, dragging the net full of fish. They weren't far from shore, about a hundred yards away. Breakfast by the shore 9When they came to land, they saw a charcoal fire laid there, with fish and bread on it. 10Jesus spoke to them. ‘Bring some of the fish you've just caught,' he said. 11So Simon Peter went and pulled the net onto the shore. It was full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three in all. The net wasn't torn, even though there were so many. 12‘Come and have breakfast,' said Jesus to them. None of the disciples dared ask him, ‘Who are you?' They knew it was the master. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so also with the fish. 14This was now the third time that Jesus had appeared to the disciples after he had been raised from the dead. Colossians 1:9-14This is a time where prayer has to be an important part of our lives. Not only is it important to pray, but prayer brings revealing things about us.What do I mean by that? The content of our prayers can tell us what type of relationship we are having with God.Our prayer can reveal what we believe about God. meaning if your prayerhas become repetitive and you don’t have anything else to say but the same thing. Then We need to re-evaluate how is our relationship with Him.Because I guaranty most of our prayer’s half of the time or 99% of the time is about what matters to us, and not God’s will in our lives. God doesn’t want you to only come into a deeper relationship with Him.He also wants you to Make him the primary source. Take a moment and do an edit of your prayer. Few Points here:1. Prayer for one another is important. It clear in verse 9.2. The keyword here continually we have to ask God to fill us. Not just you but all of us.3. We have to be pleasing to God. 4. This walk is not easy we have to be able to endure this walk and be patient.

“He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” Proverbs 28:13Sin can be a lot like mold.By the time we see sin appear in our lives or in the lives of others, we can be sure its roots have already spread inward and multiplied. Actions are merely a reflection of what lives in the heart. Murder begins in our hearts and minds when we refuse to love our neighbour as ourselves. It may not be detectable in the early stages, but as the spores of sin grow and flourish, it will make itself known.Sin thrives in a heart that is receptive to lies and easily deceived; it will feed off unforgiveness and selfishness, and with the right encouragement, will flourish into death.“Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” James 1:14This is why it is so important to root out the sin in our lives as soon as we are aware of its presence. Proverbs 28:13 tells us that, “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”Notice there are two calls to action: we must confess our sin and renounce them.Hidden sins have a way of spreading and invading our life when left unattended. If the Holy Spirit is revealing to you an area in your life where you need to confess and repent, don't delay. Our God is gracious and compassionate. He longs to heal and forgive. But He will not invade your life without permission; He stands at the door and knocks. Will you invite Him in?“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.” Ephesians 1:7-8

I’m going to let you in on something that I struggle with. It’s a sin that I have a very hard time getting victory over. I know it’s a sin. I confess it, but I have yet to conquer it. It’s been a problem in my life for a very long time, and I would appreciate it if you would pray for me about it. I’m serious. What’s the sin? It’s the sin of unforgiveness. I was reminded of it near the end of our reading today. I am really just dumbfounded sometimes by God’s willingness to forgive. Listen again to verses 14 through 16: 14This is what the Lord says: “As for all my wicked neighbors who seize the inheritance I gave my people Israel, I will uproot them from their lands and I will uproot the people of Judah from among them. 15But after I uproot them, I will again have compassion and will bring each of them back to their own inheritance and their own country. 16And if they learn well the ways of my people and swear by my name, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives’—even as they once taught my people to swear by Baal—then they will be established among my people.” God is referring to the people who badly mistreated His chosen people…the people He had given incredible promises to. They had put His chosen into slavery and destroyed everything God had given them. And yet, God says that if these people would learn to love Him, if they would seek His ways, He would forgive them and give them the same status as His chosen people. Isn’t that incredible? God had a special kind of relationship with the Jews. He loved them with a kind of love that is hard to fathom. And yet, He says that if the people who brought His people so much hardship and heartbreak would turn to Him, He would forgive them. Listen, if you hurt my loved ones, you and I are going to have a problem. You hurt them, I’m gonna hurt you. That’s just the way it is. Maybe I’ll forgive you once you’ve felt the payback. But not until then. Ok, so that’s my flesh talking. See? I have a hard time with forgiving. Thankfully, God has given me an amazing, caring, loving, giving, selfless wife who has a forgiving heart, and she models forgiveness to me constantly. I read and understand God’s Word, and He uses her to put flesh on what I read. So as the bumper sticker says, “God isn’t finished with me yet.” I’m glad He doesn’t give up.
Works for solo piano performed by Martina Filjak.Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 13 in B-Flat Major, K. 333Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 14This week’s podcast is all about playing to your strengths. We’ll hear two piano sonatas, each written by composers who were also noted pianists and often performed their own work. We begin with Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 13 in B-flat Major, a familiar work to many listeners, but lengthy and widely considered one of the composer’s most challenging pieces to play. Mozart most likely wrote it for himself, and he almost certainly performed it in concert. Next, we’ll hear Prokofiev’s second Piano Sonata, in D minor, Opus 14. Prokofiev was an accomplished pianist, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and his first successes as a composer were with works he himself performed, which often included feats of great pianistic virtuosity. We’ll hear both of these virtuoso works played by a young pianist who is making waves of her own. Martina Filjak won the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2009 and has since been catapulted into an impressive career.
