What was different about the 2014 elections in Solomon Islands and what it means for development

Development Policy Centre Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2015 48:10

The 2014 elections in Solomon Islands brought an intriguing mix of change and continuity. For the first time ever a sitting prime minister lost his seat. Yet the average incumbent survival rate was much higher than usual. The elections were preceded by the passage of legislation designed to promote political parties, and the number of candidates associated with parties increased considerably. Yet the proportion of winning candidates who were independents was actually unusually high. Meanwhile, on the campaign trail it was easy to find the rhetoric of good governance and change, but election results themselves suggest that, typically, constituency level electoral contests were won or lost through the usual mechanisms. On the other hand, new civil society groups and social media - possibly - could be seen to be playing a larger role in elections in 2014 than in previous years. In this seminar Terence Wood talked on the recent elections in Solomon Islands and the results that have emerged from them. He also discussed what, if anything, has changed about Solomon Islands’ underlying political economy, and what this means for the country’s development prospects. This public seminar was presented by the Development Policy Centre at Crawford School of Public Policy and the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Program, The Australian National University.

Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer was elected to his position last November and took office on January 8, 2013.  While this is his first elected office, Supervisor Latimer is not new to the Supervisor of Elections office. He served as Chief of Staff to the Supervisor of Elections from 2009 to 2013. Public service has always been a part of Mr. Latimer’s job description. Before working for the Supervisor of Elections office, he served and protected the community for 35 years in law enforcement, retiring as a Major from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in 2008. Supervisor Latimer also serves our community as a volunteer. He is on the Board of the Central Florida Behavioral Health Network, Bay Area Youth Services, and the Tampa Catholic Board of Trustees, and he is an Honorary Commander for the 6th Medical Group at MacDill Air Force Base. Craig Latimer was born and raised here in Hillsborough County.  He attended Christ the King, graduated from Tampa Catholic High School, and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida. Craig Latimer led the turnaround in the elections office to restore integrity, efficiency and confidence in the election process. He brought to the office leadership and accountability; timely and accurate reporting of results; impartiality and nonpartisanshp; a renewed commitment to ethics and professionalism; excellent voter services; and responsible and conservative stewardship of taxpayers’ funds. Our interview will focus on the 2014 Elections, information about voter registration, the voting process, Election Day voting, Early Voting, Vote By Mail, voting equipment, and election dates..
