For the first time since Yu Darvish, the Cubs have signed a $100 million dollar player. Dansby Swanson signed a 7 year, $177 million dollar deal to presumably take over shortstop and join with Nico Hoerner in the league's best defensive middle infield. Drew Smyly also reportedly has agreed to return, filling out the Cubs rotation and giving it truly solid depth. The offense? Well…it's not there yet. We talk a little bit about rumored targets Michael Conforto and Trey Mancini, and we only talk about the remaining catching options as much as we legally have to. Welcome to Chicago, Dansby! While the American League playoffs mostly played out as expected, nothing could be further from the truth on the National League side. Three teams won at least 100 games - the Dodgers, Braves, and Mets. None of them reached the NLCS. We'll get to the sixth-seeded Phillies magical run in the next episode, but tune in to today's to revisit the impressive run of the San Diego Padres, who took down two heavily favored opponents in the Mets and their in-state rival Dodgers. San Diego has been a team yet to meet the lofty expectations of their star power, with perennial all-star Manny Machado and newly acquired phenom Juan Soto anchoring their lineup. They are of course without superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis, Jr., due to a PED suspension as well as a wrist injury, but other members of the team like Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth have stepped up admirably. They also boast a strong rotation headed by veterans Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, with former Cy Young winner Blake Snell taking the hill in between the righty duo. All in all it was an up and down season for this Padres team, who did enough to secure a playoff spot, but ultimately were 22 games back in their division. And first up for them in this postseason are the New York Mets, with future Hall-of-Famers Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom in a best-of-three. Get past that juggernaut, and you have to face the 111 win Los Angeles Dodgers, who've had the Padres number for decades on decades. On paper, the Padres regular season was a disappointment. On paper, they stand no chance against these 100+ win behemoths. But these series aren't played on paper... and the Padres are gonna prove that. Tune in to an exciting playoff run for a team determined to make a statement this year. Audio Clips from MLB.tv (NLWC games from ESPN and 97.3 the Fan, NLDS games from FS1 and 97.3 the Fan) As always, shout out to Baseball Reference for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more. Game 1 of the NLCS went to the Philadelphia Phillies, who won an outstanding pitching duel between Zack Wheeler and Yu Darvish, and the San Diego Padres offense was very sad. As such, the post game show is a sad one.
MLB analyst AJ Pierzynski on why the scene at Petco for the NLDS is one of the best he's ever seen, what it's like catching Yu Darvish and why he didn't like what he saw in Juan Soto's GM at-bat.
Lodged in between a game against the Commanders last week and a Patriots game that's not until Monday the guys do the obvious thing and talk about Strother Martin for a while on the Bears podcast. The look back at the mind-numbing loss to Washington and at how hard the Bears had to work to not accidentally win the game. They take opposite sides on how much the Bears GM and coach are really invested in making this situation work out for Justin Fields. They look at the troubling (though in at least one case highly enjoyable) struggles of all three teams currently trying to run the Packers version of the Kyle Shanahan offense and wonder if maybe the real problem is that none of them have Davante Adams on their team. They look ahead to Monday in Foxborough and give two reasons why George McCaskey is going to give a rip roaring pregame speech to fire up the troops. And, they try to figure out why Yu Darvish's leg is bleeding in a baseball game going on in the background. Oh, and you'll learn more about the actual follow up to A Christmas Story than you never wanted to know. It's Bears related. Really. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

In today's episode, Connor recaps an incredible NLDS against the Atlanta Braves and what it tells us about how the Philadelphia Phillies got to the NLCS against the San Diego Padres. Next, a preview of game 1 of the series in San Diego with a pitching matchup between Zack Wheeler and Yu Darvish, along with a breakdown of the two starting lineups for tonight's game. Finally, Connor gives his answer to the question that so many people in Philly have been asking lately: "How did the Phillies get here??" Learn more about your ad choices. Locked On Dodgers – Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Dodgers
It was a frustrating night for the Dodgers and the offense on Wednesday night. They were able to chase Yu Darvish before six innings but were unable to get that big hit to get them tied or take a lead. Clayton Kershaw's night was just ok and the bullpen after wasn't as lights out as the night before; however, there were some standouts. There was an interesting decision to pinch-hit with Austin Barnes in a key situation so the guys talk about that decision as well. Now the series heads to San Diego and we will see Tony Gonsolin on the mound in Game 3. Hour 1- Darren zooms back into the show and recaps an epic GM 2, does the Padres starting pitching now give them an edge? We hear from Yu Darvish and Bob Melvin.
The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the Padres 5-3 win over the Dodgers. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon were both impressed with the managing job of Bob Melvin. The ability of Yu Darvish to change velocity is amazing and Joe thinks the gameplan included not throwing the same pitch twice during an at-bat. Over to the Astros win, Joe explores Seattle bringing starter Robbie Ray to the mound as a reliever. Tom asks Joe about walking a batter with the bases loaded and the strategy that goes into facing a player like Aaron Judge. With the passing of former MLB pitcher Dick Ellsworth, Tom offers up an amazing memory of just how many innings he pitched. How does the Cleveland fishing scandal relate to athletes always looking for an edge? Plus, we wrap up with Tom revisiting his Jefferson Starship collection and asking Joe for some classic rock recommendations. Hour 2: Craig and Evan break down the Mets series starting Friday night against the Padres, what to make of the leaked Draymond Green video, Yu Darvish chants, and much more.
Head and Heart. 10/7/2022
Hour 1: Buck Showalter is starting Max Scherzer on Friday night. If they win, Chris Bassitt will most likely pitch game 2. And then deGrom would pitch the elimination game 3 if needed. If the Mets lose Friday night, then deGrom would pitch Saturday. Boomer doesn't love that idea. He wants Scherzer & deGrom for games 1 & 2 no matter what. Jerry is here and starts with Jeff McNeil winning the N.L.Batting Title. Jerry has audio of Buck Showalter announcing Max Scherzer as the Friday night starter.
