Nettles Explained: How House of the Dragon Replaced a Fan-Favorite Character With Rhaena

House of the Dragon Season 3 just made one of its biggest departures yet from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, cutting the fan-favorite dragonseed Nettles entirely and folding her role into Rhaena Targaryen. In this episode of Geek Freaks Headlines, we break down who Nettles is in the books, how she claims the wild dragon Sheepstealer, her complicated relationship with Daemon Targaryen, and why showrunner Ryan Condal chose to merge her arc with Rhaena's instead of adapting her directly. We also dig into what this change means for Daemon's redemption arc going forward, and whether the show just skipped past some of the richest material in the source text.**Timestamps**- 0:00 Intro, the big change to House of the Dragon- 0:12 Who is Nettles in the books- 0:28 The showrunner's reasoning for replacing her with Rhaena- 0:49 The Battle of the Gullet aftermath- 1:03 Daemon takes Nettles in as a companion- 1:26 Rhaenyra's paranoia and the hit on Nettles- 1:48 Nettles' fate in the Vale- 2:20 What this means for Daemon's redemption arc- 2:36 Final thoughts and wrap up**Key Takeaways**- Nettles is a lowborn dragonseed who claims the wild dragon Sheepstealer by feeding it dead sheep daily until it trusts her- Showrunner Ryan Condal chose to give her arc to Rhaena Targaryen to keep the story centered on the Targaryen family- Unlike Rhaena in the show, book Nettles was not responsible for Jace's death and fought valiantly in the Battle of the Gullet- Daemon takes Nettles in afterward, teaching her the ways of court, and the book leaves it ambiguous whether their bond is romantic or fatherly- Rhaenyra grows paranoid and puts a bounty on Nettles, forcing Daemon to help her flee- The show's choice to skip this material may cost us the redemption arc for Daemon that the book's ending sets up**Memorable Quotes**"She's a fighter, you know, she grew up tough. She claims Sheepstealer by feeding him dead sheep every day until the dragon trusts her.""Nettles is a great character I think really deserved to be in the show, but I understand making Rhaena more substantial.""He has not been a good dad. He's a terrible dad."**Got Thoughts on This Change?**Do you think replacing Nettles with Rhaena was the right call, or should HBO have found a way to keep both characters? Consequences Hosea 9-10 9 Rejoice not, O Israel! Exult not like the peoples; for you have played the whore, forsaking your God. You have loved a prostitute's wages on all threshing floors. 2  Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail them. 3  They shall not remain in the land of the LORD, but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria. 4  They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the LORD, and their sacrifices shall not please him. It shall be like mourners' bread to them; all who eat of it shall be defiled; for their bread shall be for their hunger only; it shall not come to the house of the LORD. 5  What will you do on the day of the appointed festival, and on the day of the feast of the LORD? 6  For behold, they are going away from destruction; but Egypt shall gather them; Memphis shall bury them. Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver; thorns shall be in their tents. 7  The days of punishment have come; the days of recompense have come; Israel shall know it. The prophet is a fool; the man of the spirit is mad, because of your great iniquity and great hatred. 8  The prophet is the watchman of Ephraim with my God; yet a fowler's snare is on all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God. 9  They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah: he will remember their iniquity; he will punish their sins. 10  Like grapes in the wilderness, I found Israel. Like the first fruit on the fig tree in its first season, I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved. 11  Ephraim's glory shall fly away like a bird— no birth, no pregnancy, no conception! 12  Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them till none is left. Woe to them when I depart from them! 13  Ephraim, as I have seen, was like a young palm planted in a meadow; but Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter. 14  Give them, O LORD— what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. 15  Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal; there I began to hate them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more; all their princes are rebels. 16  Ephraim is stricken; their root is dried up; they shall bear no fruit. Even though they give birth, I will put their beloved children to death. 17  My God will reject them because they have not listened to him; they shall be wanderers among the nations. -- 10 Israel is a luxuriant vine that yields its fruit. The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built; as his country improved, he improved his pillars. 2  Their heart is false; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their altars and destroy their pillars. 3  For now they will say: “We have no king, for we do not fear the LORD; and a king—what could he do for us?” 4  They utter mere words; with empty oaths they make covenants; so judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field. 5  The inhabitants of Samaria tremble for the calf of Beth-aven. Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests— those who rejoiced over it and over its glory— for it has departed from them. 6  The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria as tribute to the great king. Ephraim shall be put to shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol. 7  Samaria's king shall perish like a twig on the face of the waters. 8  The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed. Thorn and thistle shall grow up on their altars, and they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,” and to the hills, “Fall on us.” 9  From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel; there they have continued. Shall not the war against the unjust overtake them in Gibeah? 10  When I please, I will discipline them, and nations shall be gathered against them when they are bound up for their double iniquity. 11  Ephraim was a trained calf that loved to thresh, and I spared her fair neck; but I will put Ephraim to the yoke; Judah must plow; Jacob must harrow for himself. 12  Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you. 13  You have plowed iniquity; you have reaped injustice; you have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your own way and in the multitude of your warriors, 14  therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle; mothers were dashed in pieces with their children. 15  Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel, because of your great evil. At dawn the king of Israel shall be utterly cut off.

Welcome to The Daily. Read more about our mission to teach every verse of the bible in what we call Project23. Grab your Hosea Scripture Journal. Our text today is Hosea 9:5-6: What will you do on the day of the appointed festival, and on the day of the feast of the Lord? For behold, they are going away from destruction; but Egypt shall gather them; Memphis shall bury them. Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver; thorns shall be in their tents. — Hosea 9:5-6 What if everything about your worship looks right, but God isn't in it? Hosea asks a probing question: "What will you do on the day of the appointed festival?" In other words, what happens when your worship gatherings continue, but God no longer accepts them? Israel had it all. Feasts. Rhythms. Sacred days. They showed up, went through the motions, and kept the system running. But God was gone from it. He had been gone a long time. Their worship had become routine without relationship. God makes it clear: when judgment comes, none of it will help. Their religious gatherings won't save them. Their religious celebrations won't protect them. Their religious habits won't carry them through what's coming. That's the warning. Everyone knows you can stand in a room full of worship and still be far from God. You can sing loudly, listen weekly, serve consistently, and never actually surrender. You can look alive spiritually and be empty at the core. And eventually, this empty form of worship crumples. That's why Hosea paints a stark ending. Homes overtaken. Possessions lost. Futures cut off. Everything they leaned on disappears, and their worship offers no refuge. Is your worship real? Not passionate. Not polished. Not consistent. But real, authentic, genuine. It flows from a life that actually walks with God. Worship was never meant to be something you attend. It's something you live. And here's the grace. He's still inviting you back. You don't have to keep faking it. You don't have to keep going through motions that lead nowhere. You can come back with honesty, humility, and a heart that actually wants Him. DO THIS: Before your next moment of worship, pause and ask God to make your heart sincere, not just your actions. ASK THIS: Is my worship connected to how I actually live? Have I been going through the motions? What would it look like to come back to real worship? PRAY THIS: God, don't let my worship become empty. Bring my heart back to you and make my devotion real again. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Heart of Worship"

Paul and Andrea are back, and after last week's devastating Battle of the Gullet, this episode opens with Baela, his betrothed, returning Prince Jacaerys's ("Jace") body to Dragonstone. Rhaenyra is consumed by grief, but when Daemon returns from Harrenhal with news that Vhagar has left King's Landing, she finally agrees to retake the capital.Discussion HighlightsThe Battle of the Gullet — Revisionist HistoryThe hosts note the show's "unreliable narrator" device: the dragonseeds arrived at the Gullet after the battle was largely won, yet Ulf later claims credit for having "been there." They speculate the in-world histories may write Baela (and Moondancer) out of the record entirely — mirroring the books' own unreliable-narrator conceit.Emma D'Arcy's PerformanceExtensive praise for D'Arcy's portrayal of Rhaenyra's grief, compared to a similar physical breakdown moment in Downton Abbey. Special attention paid to the scene where Rhaenyra rebuffs Ser Lorent's comfort.Rhaenyra's Shift to DecisivenessThe hosts track Rhaenyra's arc from "what good would killing him do" to ordering Lorent's death moments later, tying it to Daemon's "did the queen stutter" energy and the prophecy (the Prince/Princess That Was Promised) as a source of newfound resolve.Alys Rivers & the Ruby TheoryA deep-cut theory: when Alys tells Daemon "I'll ask for food and you offer me rubies," the hosts connect it to Rhaegar's ruby breastplate and the Trident — suggesting Alys may be cryptically referencing the eventual fall of House Targaryen, generations later.Daemon & MysariaThe hosts debate Mysaria's actual value to Rhaenyra's council beyond being a confidante/paramour, noting she's stopped functioning as a spymaster despite that being her narrative purpose. They also flag how strange Rhaenyra's inner circle (Mysaria, and eventually Alicent) will look to outside lords. The Alicent MVP DiscussionAlicent is credited as the true architect of King's Landing's bloodless surrender — minimizing violence more effectively than Rhaenyra ever managed, while letting history hand the credit to Daemon. The hosts are far more critical of the Ironrod assault scene, calling it an unnecessary and "despicable" use of the sexual-violence-to-build-sympathy trope, seemingly deployed just to justify the audience enjoying his death.Rhaena, Lady Jeyne & the "Nettles" TheoryThe hosts revisit a fan theory (credited to an unnamed Threads user) that Rhaena may take on the identity of Nettles later in the story. They also debate the parentage of Sheepstealer, guessing at Vhagar or Dreamfire as the likely mother. The Velaryons on the BeachThe "Corlys has more than Rhaenyra" line gets pushback (Rhaenyra still has three living sons). The hosts liken the beach scene to a "secret meeting" and mourn how much House Velaryon has sacrificed for a cause that cost them Laenor and Laena outside of direct battle.Dark Sister's SymbolismDaemon gives Rhaenyra Jace's sword — Dark Sister, historically Visenya Targaryen's blade — for the execution. The hosts read this as deliberate: Visenya is remembered (rightly or wrongly) as the warrior-queen of the Conquest era, foreshadowing Rhaenyra's own turn toward decisive violence. The Execution & the ThroneMixed feelings on how the final walk to the Iron Throne was shot — visually stunning (deliberately echoing Viserys's own labored walk) but "heavy-handed" in symbolism. The hosts push back on audience discomfort with Rhaenyra's visible grief while executing Otto, arguing it's a more honest portrayal than the "affectless" violence typically rewarded on this show.Historical Parallels — Who Is Rhaenyra? An extended comparison to real English queens: initially set up like Elizabeth I (diplomat, problem-solver, besieged claim), but the hosts argue the writing is now trending toward Mary I ("Bloody Mary") — a traumatized, zealous ruler shaped by grief and a singular obsessive belief (the prophecy standing in for Mary's Catholicism). Alicent is compared to Margaret Beaufort — a soft-power operator rather than a battlefield figure.Succession Planning CritiqueThe hosts argue Viserys's biggest leadership failure wasn't naming Rhaenyra heir — it was failing to rebuild his council around people who'd actually support her once he was gone, leaving Otto and Alicent in place far too long.

Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November 28, 2021Weird Darkness runs from the 1997 mass suicide of the Heaven's Gate UFO cult outside San Diego to an 1876 counterfeiting gang's attempt to steal Abraham Lincoln's corpse from his tomb in Springfield, Illinois. It opens with the discovery, on March 26, 1997, of thirty-nine members of Heaven's Gate inside a rented mansion in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe — twenty-one women and eighteen men lying beneath purple shrouds in matching black shirts and new black-and-white Nike sneakers, plastic bags over their heads, after swallowing phenobarbital and vodka. They believed the deaths would free their souls to board an alien spacecraft trailing the Hale-Bopp comet, which was making its closest approach to Earth that month. Former music professor Marshall Applewhite had started the group in 1975 with his nurse Bonnie Lu Nettles, the two of them renaming themselves Bo and Peep and later Do and Ti before persuading about twenty people in Oregon to leave their families and wait in eastern Colorado for a ship that never arrived. Applewhite preached that human bodies were disposable containers, that he was the second coming of Jesus, and that God was an alien. Nettles died in 1985, but he held the group together, and by the 1990s it had become the first well-known internet-era cult, paying its bills by building web pages under the business name Higher Source. The members watched Star Trek: The Next Generation, sewed Heaven's Gate Away Team patches onto their uniforms, severed contact with relatives through a practice Applewhite called breaking away, and submitted to a ban on sex that several of the men, Applewhite among them, enforced on themselves through castration. The episode closes with the 1876 plot to steal Abraham Lincoln's body from his tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. A Chicago counterfeiting ring run by James "Big Jim" Kneally had lost its master engraver, Benjamin Boyd, to a ten-year term in Joliet Penitentiary, so the gang resolved to seize the president's corpse and ransom it for Boyd's freedom. On election night, November 7, 1876, gang members Terence Mullen and Jack Hughes filed through the lock and split the marble sarcophagus with an ax, unaware that the grave robber they knew as Jim Morrissey was Secret Service operative Lewis Swegles, and that Captain Patrick Tyrell's agents and Pinkerton detectives hired by Robert Lincoln were hidden elsewhere in the monument. The trap fell apart when the lawmen fired on one another in the dark and the two robbers wandered off and escaped, though both were captured on November 18 and, with grave robbery barely a crime in Illinois at the time, served only a year in Joliet. What the public would not learn for years was that custodian John C. Power and a secret brotherhood calling itself the Lincoln Guard of Honor had already dragged the five-hundred-pound coffin into a damp labyrinth beneath the monument and buried it under loose boards and dirt, leaving visitors to grieve over an empty sarcophagus. The body was shifted from hiding place to hiding place until 1901, when Robert Lincoln ordered his father's casket lowered ten feet, locked inside a steel cage, and sealed under two tons of concrete, following one last viewing in which Leon P. Hopkins, the plumber who had closed the coffin back in 1865, studied a chalk-whitened but recognizable face and soldered the lead shut for good.

Thanks to Old Hall's Dave Hodgson for making possible the chance to have an event in the Chapel and to be able to make a recording in the grounds. Three men tasked with chopping the firewood, the threat of rain was hollow, and the sun has come out, a man driving the tractor, a Massey Ferguson 675, the wind gentler than last week but still bit gusty, children playing on the trampoline, the man on the tractor setting it up to chop some wood, all hands on deck to make the firewood the right size for its various uses, jackdaws congregating in the big gnarly tree above the lumberjacks, blue and white flowering Nettles, Comfrey on a big patch under the holly tree, all four men chopping the wood working in dependently, man vs wood, blade vs bark, the wood of the axe shaft a traitor? Or forced in to labour against its own kind, no choice in the matter, wood the rarest material in the universe, and one of the most useful, one man visited by a woman and then they both leave and head towards the Hall, a man in a wooly hat walking past whilst looking at the lumberjacks, technique is more important than strength, tractor is stronger than tecnique, the man with glasses walks away from the pile, two remaining men carry on, a man with a pony tail walks past with a watering can, a cold breeze arrives with a large cloud, a Sparrow inspecting the wood pile left by the man with the glasses, a couple with shoulder bags walk past, a silver car drives past, similar to the recording made near Gandish Road a few gusts start to appear near to the end of the recording, an hour seems like an awkwardly long time whilst in someone else's domain as somewhat of an imposition even with a welcome from one of the community, would Constable have been ignored by the public whenever he was working in the field? The tractor stops and the man operating takes his ear defenders off, now I can hear the sound of children playing and more details of the wind in the trees, you could say that because more os the recording is full up with tractor engine that the visit was poorly timed but I accept that my experience is what happens whenever I am wherever, but I let the recording run on a little bit extra to see if I can get a nice excerpt sans combustion engine, thankfully I had a wee before the recording, Dave is coming back and gives me a wave, the bag couple comeback up the lane.

Was Graig Nettles one of the greatest third basemen to ever play… or just another name lost in the numbers? This episode of Kenny The Sports Guy Podcast dives deep into one of baseball's most debated Hall of Fame snubs. A 22-year MLB veteran, Nettles crushed 390 home runs, drove in over 1,300 RBIs, and anchored championship teams with the New York Yankees. He was a six-time All-Star, a two-time World Series champion, and one of the best defensive third basemen of his era. So why isn't he in Cooperstown? We break down the real reasons: A .248 career batting average that never wowed voters Limited accolades compared to peers at a stacked position Playing in the shadow of legends like Mike Schmidt and Brooks Robinson And a Hall of Fame voting system that dropped him off the ballot in just four years But here's the twist—advanced stats tell a different story. Nettles posted around 68 WAR, one of the highest totals for any player NOT in the Hall of Fame . So did voters get it wrong? This episode asks the tough question: Was Graig Nettles truly snubbed… or just not quite elite enough?

A person's accent can influence the way they are perceived. When it comes to broadcast journalism, the way a person talks is front and center and can open the door to both praise and unsolicited criticism. In our last episode, contributor Arionne Nettles looked at the Southern roots of the Black Chicago accent. It goes back to the Great Migration. Even though many Chicagoans are generations removed from their Southern relatives, some aspects of the accent persist for three main reasons: Black Chicagoans tend to live close to each other, they maintain relationships with family in the South and they like how the accent sounds. Today, we get personal with Nettles, who grew up on Chicago's South Side. She's a journalism professor at Florida A&M University, a culture reporter and author. As a person with the Black Chicago accent, she considered changing the way she spoke to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. She talks about what the accent means to her, and why she ultimately decided not to change it.

We also examine the recent bloating of the “Southern Gothic” genre, analyze the longing to portray regional American identities, and propose Ethel as a cultural bridge between pandemic-era Christian poseurs and today's girlygirl obsession with alternative spirituality. We also hear directly from STARGIRL listener Alex (@daught3rmourn1ng_) who is originally from the Florida panhandle, was brought up in the Southern Baptist tradition, and now makes experimental drone music (like what?!).

The first Ethel Cain album, Preacher's Daughter, came out in 2022. It ended up blowing up, and it made Hayden the first openly trans artist with an album in the top ten on the Billboard chart. In 2025, she put out the second Ethel Cain album, called Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You. For this episode, I talked to Hayden about how she made the song “Nettles.” As you're about to hear, it took on a lot of different forms, over several years, before she got to the final version. For more info, visit songexploder.net/ethel-cain.

In this episode, I begin a short series based on the book by Thomas Nettles, In the Midst of the Years: A History of Reformation and Revival in America. There is much confusion in the modern age related to what revival is and how we can discern when a movement is of God is truly of God. In this book, Nettles travels through the history of reformation and revival in America — he covers people like Jonathan Edwards, Charles Finney, Dwight Moody, and Billy Sunday. He also analyzes events like the First and Second Great Awakening, the Civil War Revivials, and the 1858 Prayer revival. In this short series, I will be discussing four of these people/events in American church history.Today, I will start in the 1700s with Jonathan Edwards. Edwards gives five criteria for analyzing and judging a revival. These criteria are still valid and extremely helpful for today. My hope is that through this series, you can more truthfully judge whether or not something is a movement of the Spirit of God or a movement of the whims of men. I hope you enjoy!
