Farmers are facing a bumpy road ahead as trade policies and global economic shifts create uncertainty in agriculture. Dan Basse, President of AgResource Company, recently shared his insights on these challenges and what they mean for the industry. "We're now trading every headline," Basse explained. "Many experienced traders are stepping away because forecasting decisions has become difficult." One of Basse's primary concerns is U.S. trade policy. "Agricultural markets are driven by either policy or weather," he noted. "Right now, policy is our biggest concern." He highlighted the potential for growth in biofuels like E15 and sustainable aviation fuel. "If sustainable aviation fuel reaches 5% by 2030, that could mean 12 million more corn acres," Basse said. However, he stressed that the U.S. lacks enough ethanol facilities to meet this demand. "We need investment in new facilities to achieve those goals," he added.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's Open Mic guest is Dan Basse, President of AgResource Company. With over 45 years of experience in the global grain market, Basse has seen cyclical swings in commodity prices and farm income many times before. Unlike years gone by, the United States farmer is no longer the primary supplier of grains to the international market and is politically and financially being squeezed out of what were once promising markets. Basse says price is no longer the primary driver of export sales and future administrations may be forced to use strong trade policy to open doors for farmers. Basse says the renewable fuels industry as well as airlines need regulatory certainty to secure their share of a promising demand base for their crops.

Agriculture has seen its fair share of ups and downs in recent months. We went on a rollercoaster ride of cheese and butter prices. And we keep seeing challenges across the globe with wars and weather. It's kept everyone on their toes. Throughout the summer and early fall, the spotlight has been on butterfat, which reached a record high of $3.36 per pound. This surge in prices was primarily driven by a heightened demand for butter, triggered by a rise in cream usage for ice cream production during the summer months. However the inability to find substantial demand for other dairy products like powdered milk and whey has kept overall milk prices in check. “We are looking at 2024 as being the year of protein,” says Dan Basse, president of AgResource Company. “I'm encouraged that milk prices will rise, and think we can make it back to a seasonal high in 2024 somewhere between $20 and $22/cwt, which would be a big advantage from where we are sitting today.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The agricultural market is always changing, but there are ways for producers to stay ahead and seize some opportunities. Parts of South America will be harvesting 11 to 12 tons more soybeans than they ever have before while others will be down 50%. Economist Dan Basse of AgResource Company shares some insight into how this affects prices here in the U.S. “It's really a strange season for South America,” explains Basse. “Brazil is an area of abundance. In fact, to the degree that there was a while that the ports of Brazil stopped taking soybeans because there was so much supply, they didn't have storage for all that.” Brazil will be harvesting 153 million tons of soybeans this year, which is about 12 million tons more than they've ever cut. Basse says while they are doing well, across the border in Argentina, it is a disaster as they're yields will be down 40 percent.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's Open Mic guest is Dan Basse, president of AgResource Company. Commodity and financial markets have been tossed on the waves of COVID-19 and its variants. For 2022, Basse hopes to see a deceleration of cases and more stability in markets. He says inflation is an issue but the bigger story in agriculture is that of demand. The globe's thirst for food, feed and renewable energy is driving an appetite for commodities that will challenge the production capacity of the planet's farmers and ranchers. Domestically, Basse says Congress should readdress its 2007 energy policy to provide farmers and investors with clear direction. For now, laws in California and other states are incentivizing next-generation biofuels - heightening demand for oilseed crops and ultimately bringing a shift in planted acreage.
