Editor's Note: This episode of Humans of Travel includes discussions on the topics of infant death, child loss and grief. Erika Richter, the senior director of communications for the American Society of Travel Advisors, (also known as ASTA) has been a tireless advocate for travel advisors. She is well-known in the industry — by travel advisors and suppliers alike — and has spent nearly eight years as a spokesperson for the association. A Michigan native who started her professional career on the Hill in Washington, D.C., Richter spent years gathering experience and honing her skills in advocacy, public relations and communications until a personal tragedy led her to push for a new kind of change. In this episode of Humans of Travel, Richter recounts the horrific day that changed her life forever — the day she lost her two-week-old daughter, Emma, in August 2018. Richter shares how she spent her time in the months following, including the moment she found out that Emma had died due to positional asphyxiation from Fisher-Price's Rock ‘n Play Sleeper — an inclined infant sleep product that was recalled in 2019 — and her subsequent fight to hold the CEOs of Fisher-Price and Mattel (the owner of Fisher-Price) accountable by providing written and video testimony earlier this year during a Congressional hearing with the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Hi, I'm John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, and you're listening to Share Life Today. "One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.” This powerful verse from the Psalms imparts to us an important truth: we are to tell generations younger than us about God's power. Whether it's reading the Scriptures with them or sharing testimonies of what God has done in our lives, we can pour into Christians younger than us. And in a case like Asta's, this can be life-changing. Asta is a teenager in Indonesia who was encouraged by his mentor to be a part of a Hope For Kid's training, so that he could disciple a child younger than him in how to share the Gospel. Asta said, "I [...] am now able to share the Good News, and I was very blessed to practice it in the field. I will continue to develop!" This is a beautiful example of discipleship over three generations. Learn how you too can be part of sharing your faith at our website at www.sharelife.today.

This week's Eye on Travel Podcast with Peter Greenberg from San Juan Puerto Rico. First up, an extended conversation with Zane Kirby - President and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors - on arrogant airlines, price gouging, traveler demand, and how some airlines may be trying to squeeze out travel advisors, not to mention you. During the pandemic, many travel advisors worked without any compensation to get refunds for their clients, and many lost money, in terms of commissions they never received. Then, there's the thorny subject of the lack of transparency with so many airlines' frequent flyer programs. Jackie Friedman - President of Nexion Travel Group - stops by with a report from the front lines. Lastly, Eben Peck - Executive Vice President of Advocacy at ASTA - expands on the law of supply and demand and how consolidating airlines leaves you with less choices and surging ticket prices. He also talks about fixing the airline frequent flyer program and forcing the airlines to keep the promises they made when they started these programs.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Asta is the largest third-party manager of Lloyd's Syndicates by quite a long way. As such, today's guest Lorraine Harfitt CEO of Asta, almost certainly has a better view of what types of new business entrepreneurs and major insurers alike are looking to set up. She also has the best view of Lloyd's changing appetites around what type of businesses it is looking to allow into - and keep out of - the marketplace. So this podcast is a great temperature gauge on the Lloyd's and wider international insurance and reinsurance markets. I'm happy to report that I found Lorraine full of optimism and enthusiasm, with a long and diverse pipeline of business in prospect on many fronts, be it new Syndicates in boxes, Captive Syndicates, traditional syndicates, other alternative vehicles or MGAs. As Lorraine puts it, there is always a fear that the appeal of the Lloyd's and London Market may one day wane. On this showing there is no evidence of this happening any time soon. Lorraine is a an industry professional of vast experience who has worked her way from the Lloyd's Policy Signing Office in Chatham all the way up into the heart of the market. She knows this business inside and out, she's great company and this podcast is packed with lots of really nuanced observations. NOTES: Lorraine mentions a Julian. That is of course Julian Tighe, former CEO of Asta and now its Group Director and Chief Commercial Officer at Davies Insurance Services. ICAS, the UK forerunner of the Solvency II regime, stood for Individual Capital Adequacy Standards. LINKS: We thank our naming sponsor AdvantageGo: https://www.advantagego.com/

Book Vs. Movie: The Thin ManThe Dashiell Hammett Novel Vs. the 1934 Classic FilmThe Margos are looking for actors with chemistry and witty banter, so we had to dive into the fabulous world of Nick and Nora Charles and The Thin Man. What began as a feature in Redbook magazine in December 1933 turned into a best-selling novel by one of the most important writers of the 20th Century--Dashiell Hammett. We discussed Hammett when talking about The Maltese Falcon, and for several reasons, The Thin Man became his last novel. Hammett was a passionate anti-fascist who joined the Communist Party in 1937. By the 1950s, Congress investigated him before the House of Un-American Activities (HUAC), where he refused to “name names.” He went to a federal penitentiary in West Virginia and found himself impoverished afterward. His partner Lillian Hellman would go on to run his estate posthumously. The Thin Man is a story about a former New York City police officer (Nick Charles) who marries a wealthy socialite (Nora Charles) and spends his time between the city and San Francisco living as a bon vivant. One day, back in NYC, he runs into Dorothy Wynert, the daughter of a former client looking for her father.Later, we learn that his secretary (and former lover), Julia Wolf, was found murdered by his former wife, Mimi. The police think she was murdered by her gangster friend Shep Morelli. Mimi's new husband is much younger, tall, handsome, and slim (the THIN man!) There are all kinds of banter, double-crossing hijinks, and more plot holes than you can shake a stick at. The movie, directed by W. S. Van Dyke in 1934, stars William Powell & Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles and their dog, Asta. Screenwriters Albert Hackett & Francis Goodrich simplified the plot in the first six films about the couple. Powell and Loy shine with their glamorous look, which delighted audiences during the Great Depression, and would go on to be nominated for four Academy Awards (It Happened One Night swept that year.) So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? In this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of Dashiell HammettMovies during the Great DepressionThe legacy of the movieThe cast of the 1934 film: William Powell (Nick Charles,) Myrna Loy (Nora Charles,) Maureen O'Sullivan (Dorothy Wynant,) Nat Pendleton (Lt. John Guild,) Minna Gombell (Mimi Wynant Jorgenson,) Porter Hall (Herbert MacCauley,) William Henry (Gilbert Wynant,) Cesar Romero (Chris Jorgenson,) Natalie Moorhead (Julia Wolf,) Harold Huber (Arthur Nunheim,) Edward Ellis the “thin man,” and Skippy as Asta the dogClips used:The audience meets Nora CharlesThe Thin Man (1934 trailer)Nick meets Dorothy for the first time in yearsNick shoots his Christmas presentNick fights an intruder (knocks out Nora!)Music: William Axt Radio production, RCA 1936 The Thin ManBook Vs.
