Thomas Bouril approached me with the idea to get the African Historians I had previously had on the podcast to do a roundtable. I liked the idea. So, Chase Barney, Alex Marino, Thomas, and Dr. David Pizzo join me to engage in a roundtable on various topics. From the impact of COVID on our research and institutions to Chinese investment in the African continent.
This week I am joined by the University of Arkansas Ph.D. candidate Alex Marino to discuss his forthcoming dissertation, “Space, Race, and the Cold War in Africa: The United States and Portuguese Angola.” We discuss American intervention in Angola in 1975-1976, during which the Central Intelligence Agency, Zaire, and South Africa were defeated by Angolan communists led by Cuba and the Soviet Union—giving specific attention to Holden Roberto and Jonas Savimbi. Alex also reveals how the Space Race influenced US Foreign Policy towards Angola individually and Southern Africa as a region. You can find Alex on Twitter at @Alex_J_Marino
What do you mean there’s no new episode today? Someone may have thrown our schedule into a wood chipper (not that we’re naming names, Ryan), but we didn’t want to let the day pass without giving you a sip of Tunes & Tumblers goodness. We reached back into our archives to bring you some tasty morsels we unfortunately had to cut from previous episodes. Strap on your headphones and hear us drunkenly dive into our favorite break-up songs with Liz Brownstein, our most memorable concert memories with Alex Marino, and what songs have changed meaning for us as we grow older, wiser, and grayer. We won’t be gone for long though. Mark your calendars for this Friday 11/15 when another delicious pairing and interview will hit the airwaves Cheers until then!

There is so much detail that is put into every pixel on the screen — but, why does Pixar do this? Ling Tu (Sets Shading Lead) mentions in our session at Pixar that by putting all the rich detail into the backstory of everything that you see, they're able to enhance their stories. If everything visually looks as you'd expect (set locations like a carnival or a porcelain character with tiny cracks), your mind looks right past those things and you can dive right into the story because everything visually is so familiar. Listen in as Craig Foster (Graphic Arts Director) and Alex Marino (Characters Shading Lead) also dive into what makes a Pixar film shine — oh and don't forget a discussion into all those hidden Easter Eggs that populate the film — there are hundreds in Toy Story 4. 00:00 — Episode 66 Kickoff 01:14 — Pixar Trivia. 03:24 — Love the Disney Parks, do you help plan your friend's vacations, visit Destination Mouse to become an agent. 08:20 — The Final Toy Story 4 trailer is hitting on May 21, get ready. 12:32 — Want to watch Toy Story 4 early or catch a sneak-peek, here's how. 18:14 — Bo Peep is coming to Disney parks this summer, get a look at her in-park design. 22:54 — What is happening with Pixar in New York City? 31:03 — Our interview with The Pixar team — It's all in the details. 1:05:21 — After the interview discussion. 1:10:44 — 1-on-1 interview with Craig Foster and Ling Tu. 1:17:48 — Wrapping up the show. Stay tuned to PixarPost.com all week for the latest Pixar news. T.J. and Julie
It's Tuesday and... Caitlin Steitzer is our guest! Caitlin Steitzer is originally from Seattle, WA and brings over a decade of improv experience to the Magnet Theater. She has been fortunate enough to perform all over New York, as well as in exotic towns like Detroit, Phoenix, Rochester, Seattle, and Prague, Czech Republic. She feels incredibly lucky to have studied with such amazing people as (in alphabetical order by last name) Rick Andrews, Russ Armstrong, Armando Diaz, Megan Gray, Ed Herbstman, Louis Kornfeld, Alex Marino, Peter McNerney, Lennon Parham, David Razowsky, Ari Voukydis, and Zach Woods. When not performing at the Magnet she is shaping bright young minds as a social worker for an after school arts program in Sunset Park. She loves improv, meaningful conversations with friends, riding bikes, dancing to Ke$ha songs, thinking about social work, and reading magazine articles, but improv most of all.
On this week's show we interviewed Alex Marino and his influence as a community leader, freeholder, and university leader.
