Today, Kaitlin is joined by poet, author, and longtime friend Nancy Reddy - a connection that has spanned the lifetime of Kaitlin's youngest child. Funny how parenthood reshapes our sense of time and friendship.Nancy first appeared on the podcast back in Season 1, Episode 12, when she and her co-editor Emily Perez discussed their anthology The Long Devotion: Poets Writing Motherhood. Since then, Nancy's work has only expanded. Shari Botwin, LCSW, has been counseling survivors in recovery from all types of traumas in her Philadelphia based private practice for over twenty-eight years. NL Holmes - Flowers of Evil: Hani's Daughter Mystery Series Book 1. This is episode 743 of Teaching Learning Leading K12. N.L. Holmes is an award-winning novelist embarking on another significant career phase. Prior to taking up the power of writing and using this pen name, she was an accomplished archaeologist and teacher for 25 years. Early in her career, she served as a nun for two decades. In between, she was an artist and antiques dealer. Yes, she has lived an interesting life and the sum of her experiences informs and inspires her writings today. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical Studies. Holmes, who earned her doctorate in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College despite an offer to attend Princeton, has excavated in Greece and Israel, and also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon. She taught ancient history and humanities at Stockton University in New Jersey and the University of South Florida for many years. Her ten published novels embrace two series of historical fiction: the Lord Hani Mysteries, set in the Egypt of Akhenaten, and the Empire at Twilight series, featuring life in the Hittite Empire in the 13th century BCE. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!” Holmes resides with her husband and three cats. She splits her time between Tampa, Florida, and northern France, where she gardens, weaves and plays the violin. She also has an adult son. A little about Flowers of Evil When two young women in ancient Egypt open a medical dispensary, they don't expect their first patient to be a dying florist of Amen whose last words are totally mysterious. It's Neferet and Bener-ib's nature to want to appease the ba of the murder victim by finding his killer, and their teenaged apprentice is a born detective. But between the skepticism of their own families and the malice of a rival healer, they find out the simple desire to do the right thing gets them into more trouble than they could have imagined! Today on the show we're talking about a fascinating topic — how to unlearn the idea of being a so-called “good mom.” We're chatting today with Nancy Reddy, author of The Good Mother Myth: Unlearning Our Bad Ideas About How to Be a Good Mom, which comes out January 21 and helps us unwind, as the title suggests, “the good mother myth” and myths we've been told over the years about what it means to be quote-unquote “good” in the mom department. In this book, Nancy presents so much science-backed advice when it comes to parenting; in today's episode we talk about whether she sees parenting as an art, a science, or a little bit of both; so-called “mom guilt” and why it's so pervasive; why “the good mother myth” is wrong, but seductive nonetheless; how suffocating expectations put on mothers can be, and how it makes mothers feel like they're not good enough (which is a fallacy); how so many ideas of motherhood are antiquated and no longer serve us; and so much more. Today, The Two Mikes spoke with Professor Michael Busler.Dr. Busler teaches at Stockton University in New Jersey. While Trump is not yet inaugurated, Dr. Busler said that, from an economic perspective, he is “extraordinarily optimistic for the economy going forward. Dr.Busler said that Trump has correctly targeted energy as a starting point for driving down prices and easing the budget problems of both businesses and consumers. On the business side, energy prices are directly responsible for 8-percent of the GDP, and indirectly contribute 30-percent. Trump, Dr. Busler said, demonstrated he can get the U.S. government out of the way of private enterprise and that his first-term policies provided “opportunities for all”, and ended his term with a national inflation rate of 1.4-percent. Professor Busler noted that the new Trump administration does face an economic challenge in the refusal of the Federal Reserve chief, Jerome Powell, a person, who over his tenure at the FED, made four serious and economy disrupting errors that insured the decline of the economy and also acted against its recovery. There is no easy answer as Powell and the FED are independent of the three branches of the federal government. The answer to the problem, of course, is to get rid of the Fed altogether – which has periodically savaged the U.S. economy since its creation by a congressional law. The Congress can pass a new law that eliminates the law of 1913 which created the FED. Afterward the administration of the U.S. economy would be handed the U.S. Treasury, where it always should have been. Dr. Busler, however, said that it would not be easy to get the Congress to pass a repeal of the 1913 law, as the FED has built its own sector of powerful supporters and lobbyists. Finally, Dr. Basler reminded Americans that the Biden Administration's electrical-vehicle mandates and subsidies have nearly killed the U.S. industry. Today, The Two Mikes spoke with Professor Michael Busler. Dr. Busler teaches at Stockton University in New Jersey. While Trump is not yet inaugurated, Dr. Busler said that, from an economic perspective, he is “extraordinarily optimistic for the economy going forward. Dr.Busler said that Trump has correctly targeted energy as a starting point for driving down prices and easing the budget problems of both businesses and consumers. On the business side, energy prices are directly responsible for 8-percent of the GDP, and indirectly contribute 30-percent. Trump, Dr. Busler said, demonstrated he can get the U.S. government out of the way of private enterprise and that his first-term policies provided “opportunities for all”, and ended his term with a national inflation rate of 1.4-percent. Professor Busler noted that the new Trump administration does face an economic challenge in the refusal of the Federal Reserve chief, Jerome Powell, a person, who over his tenure at the FED, made four serious and economy disrupting errors that insured the decline of the economy and also acted against its recovery. There is no easy answer as Powell and the FED are independent of the three branches of the federal government. The answer to the problem, of course, is to get rid of the Fed altogether – which has periodically savaged the U.S. economy since its creation by a congressional law. The Congress can pass a new law that eliminates the law of 1913 which created the FED. Afterward the administration of the U.S. economy would be handed the U.S. Treasury, where it always should have been. Dr. Busler, however, said that it would not be easy to get the Congress to pass a repeal of the 1913 law, as the FED has built its own sector of powerful supporters and lobbyists. Finally, Dr. Basler reminded Americans that the Biden Administration's electrical-vehicle mandates and subsidies have nearly killed the U.S. industry. When eighteen-year-old recent high school graduate Tiffany Valiante was struck and killed by a train in July 2015, the news came as a shock to friends and family, who couldn't fathom why the teenager had been out walking the tracks that night. Their shock and confusion quickly turned to outrage and disbelief when, less than twenty-four hours later, Tiffany's death was ruled a suicide by the New Jersey Transit Police, who were tasked with investigating the incident. As far as everyone knew, Tiffany was a happy, outgoing girl with a bright future and a sports scholarship to Mercy College in the fall—they couldn't think of a single reason why she would have wanted to end her life. Despite the official conclusions about her death, the Valiante family have never believed Tiffany intentionally stepped in front of the train that night, and in the months and years that have passed since her death, many other people have come to a similar conclusion. In fact, they're confident the evidence and numerous unanswered questions suggest Tiffany had not gone into the woods voluntarily and that her death is at best suspicious, and at worst a murder. The Mullica River in southern New Jersey was a haven for American privateers, who in the fall of 1778 had eighteen captured British vessels at anchor, their cargoes delivered to Washington's army. Sir Henry Clinton sent a raiding party from New York, which burned the ships and the town of Chestnut Neck. The town rebuilt quickly, but the wrecks lay undisturbed on the river bottom until archaeologists discovered them. We talk with Captain Steve Nagiewicz, mariner, faculty member at Stockton University, diver, and underwater archaeologist about the search for these vessels (he has enlisted his Stockton University students in the search) and what we can learn about the maritime Revolution from the wrecks beneath the surface. This unexpected sanctuary, strategically located between Russia and Alaska, has a post-apocalyptic feel like the Statue of Liberty scene at the end of the first Planet of the Apes, but cuter. White-coated inhabitants can be seen sunning themselves on the front porch, poking frosty heads from turquoise window frames, wandering their 2.8 mile yard littered with rusted tanks and construction debris. Pierre Boulle never wrote a sequel to the Planet of the Apes. Man loses. The End. And with earth's history of ruling classes and our self-destructive tendencies, this is the likely scenario. If by some grace, we go out without taking every living thing with us, it gives me pleasure to picture a sleuth of grizzly bears as the heirs to Buckingham Palace. As a whole, extraterrestrial anthropologists will have to assume, we cared very little about the arctic fox, musk ox, and polar bear, dooming these lifeforms (and then ourselves). And even though I didn't do much to stop it, I hope they'll find the remains of my glacial wall calendar and arctic-themed necktie or better yet the yellowed receipt from a donation I plan on making to the World Wildlife Fund and conclude that I was one of the good ones. Wild The rugs haven't been cut in a long while and the shag is starting to tickle my chin. It's up to my neck which is sometimes how I feel navigating the jungle of my life which germinated from the garden of my childhood and went mostly untended for the first quarter or so. Yes, it's been some time since I backpacked through nightclubs, traversed the landscape of closing time, tossed the map on an LSD trip. Right now, I am dead-heading petunias on my back deck. My two kids are sleeping. The dog is chasing lightning bugs. My wife is finishing a glass of Moscato and will soon be waiting for me in our bed. Earlier today I added boat-tailed grackle to my backyard bird list. My zucchini is starting to flower and so is (for the first time) the southern magnolia planted a few springs back. The groundhog I nicknamed Big Orange is on his hindlegs taking in the evening news. And as the sun moves to give someone else a turn with the light, I consider that this might be the wildest I've ever been.

To explore these themes, Jacobson defines and compares adrenaline narratives by a range of American authors published after the first Earth Day in 1970, a time frame selected as a watershed moment for the contemporary American environmental movement. The forty-plus years since that day also mark the rise in the popularity and marketing of many things as "extreme," including sports, jobs, travel, beverages, gum, makeovers, laundry detergent, and even the environmental movement itself. Jacobson maps the American eco-imagination via adrenaline narratives, surveying a range of popular and lesser-known primary texts by American authors, including best-sellers such as Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place. She also covers lesser-known novels as well as stories found in all types of media ranging from magazines, feature-length and short films, television shows, amateur videos, social media posts, advertising, and blogs. Jacobson argues for recognizing adrenaline narratives as a distinctive genre because, unlike traditional nature, travel, and sports writing, adrenaline narratives sustain heightened risk or the element of the "extreme" within a natural setting. The New York Times reports that since last year, Israel has been running an “influence campaign” targeting Black lawmakers in the United States. This project, overseen by Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs, consists of a crude network of fake social media accounts that post “pro-Israel comments…urging [Black Democrats like Senator Raphael Warnock, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Representative Ritchie Torres] to continue funding Israel's military.” This project was active on Meta platforms Facebook and Instagram, and utilized OpenAI's ChatGPT, until both companies disrupted the operation earlier this year. The operation is still active on X, formerly Twitter.2. Mondoweiss reports that Israel has been torturing Palestinian prisoners, aided by the complicity of Israeli physicians. According to the report, “prisoners are being viciously beaten and abused multiple times a day, caged in cells ‘not fit for human life,' kept blindfolded with their hands bound with plastic ties, isolated from the outside world, stripped of their clothing, collectively punished through starvation, attacked by dogs, sexually assaulted, and psychologically tortured.” As for the doctors, “Israeli physicians collaborate with Shin Bet interrogators [Israel's equivalent of the FBI] to ‘certify'… that [prisoners]… are ‘fit' to undergo torture. Throughout the duration of interrogation, a physician provides a ‘green light' that torture can continue…look for physical and psychological weaknesses to exploit…[and] falsify or refrain from documenting the physical and psychological effects of torture on a detainee's body and mind.” Meanwhile, for all the talk of Hamas brutality, Israeli news anchor Lama Tatour was fired for commenting that recently released hostage Noa Argamani looked remarkably healthy, saying “Look at her eyebrows, they look better than mine??” per Business Insider.3. The United Nations Security Council has, for the first time, overwhelmingly passed a Gaza ceasefire resolution, backed by the United States. Reuters reports “senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri…said [Hamas has] accepted the ceasefire resolution and [is] ready to negotiate over the specifics.” Yet, according to CNN, “Israel has vowed to persist with its military operation in Gaza, saying it won't engage in ‘meaningless' negotiations with Hamas.” As the CNN piece notes, “The resolution says Israel has accepted the plan, and US officials have repeatedly emphasized Israel had agreed to the proposal – despite other public comments from Netanyahu that suggest otherwise.” If the Israelis ultimately do not accept this ceasefire proposal, this would become yet another major embarrassment for the Biden administration.4. POLITICO reports “AIPAC [is] the biggest source of Republican money flowing into competitive Democratic primaries this year…spending millions to boost moderates over progressives who have been critical of Israel.” This piece quotes Eric Levine, a board member of the Republican Jewish Coalition who has donated to Rep. Ritchie Torres as saying “Under the William F. Buckley rule of politics, I want to support the most conservative person who can win.” On the other hand, Beth Miller – political director at Jewish Voice for Peace Action – sees this as the lobby showing its true colors, telling the paper “AIPAC can't actually claim that they represent Democrats and Republicans in the same way. That veneer of bipartisanship is gone.”5. The NAACP, among the leading African-American Civil Rights group in the country, has called on the Biden administration to “Stop Shipments of Weapons Targeting Civilians to Israel [and] Push for Ceasefire.” In a statement, NAACP President Derrick Johnson wrote “The current state of Gaza and the latest bombing of Rafah complicates an already dire humanitarian crisis. Relief workers have also been killed while attempting to administer aid and support to the people of Gaza. The NAACP strongly condemns these actions and calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.” Data from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace shows 68% of Black Americans favor an “immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza” and 59% believe “U.S. military aid to Israel should be conditioned to ensure that Israel uses American weapons for legitimate self-defense and in a way that is consistent with human rights standards.”6. Yet the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza has not stopped censorship of pro-Palestine speech in the U.S. Democracy Now! reports outspoken progressive commentator and former Bernie Sanders presidential campaign press secretary Briahna Joy Gray has been fired from the Hill's morning show, Rising, for supposedly rolling her eyes during an interview with an Israeli guest. As Democracy Now! notes, “Last year, The Hill also fired the political commentator Katie Halper after she called Israel an apartheid state.”7. Even more outrageous, the University of Minnesota is “pausing its search for director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies — days after it offered the job to Israeli historian Raz Segal,” per the Star Tribune. As this article lays out, “Segal is…[a] professor of Holocaust and genocide studies …at Stockton University in New Jersey,” and a Jewish Israeli. Yet the offer was rescinded for “Among other things…[publishing] an article called ‘A Textbook Case of Genocide,' which he published in [the Left-wing Jewish publication] Jewish Currents.” That's right, apparently even being a Jewish Israeli professor of Holocaust and genocide studies is not enough to protect you from charges of antisemitism.8. A new article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, authored by Doctors Adam Gaffney, Steffie Woolhandler, and David Himmelstein analyzes “The Medicare Advantage Paradox.” This piece argues Medicare Advantage delivers less care to patients at a higher cost. As the authors put it, “[as] enrollment in…private [Medicare Advantage] plans surpassed 30 million…the health insurance industry's trade group proclaimed [Medicare Advantage] ‘a good deal for members and taxpayers.'…The first part of that claim is debatable, while the second part is false. Medicare Payment Advisory Commission…the nonpartisan agency reporting to Congress, recently estimated that [Medicare Advantage] overpayments added $82 billion to taxpayers' costs for Medicare in 2023 and $612 billion between 2007 and 2024.”9. In Britain, the Labour Party has been conducting a purge of its Left flank under the leadership of its cowardly centrist leader Keir Starmer. Included in that purge is former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Corbyn has represented the working class district of Islington North for over 40 years. Yet, as the Guardian explains, “[Corbyn] was blocked from standing again for Labour...[and] has been expelled from the Labour party.” The Guardian report continues “Last year, 98% of attenders at a local party monthly general meeting backed a motion thanking Corbyn for his ‘commitment and service to the people', adding it was members' ‘democratic right to select our MP'.” Ousted from the Labour Party, Corbyn now intends to stand for the seat as an independent MP. Writing in the district's local paper, Corbyn stated, “When I was first elected, I made a promise to stand by my constituents no matter what … In Islington North, we keep our promises.”10. Finally, CNN reports Chiquita Brands International – formerly the United Fruit Company – has been found “liable for financing the Colombian paramilitary group Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia,” by a Florida jury. The AUC was a “far-right paramilitary group that was designated a terrorist organization by the US.” Chiquita has been ordered to pay $38.3 million to the families of eight victims. CNN adds, “In 2007, Chiquita pleaded guilty to making over 100 payments to the AUC totaling over $1.7 million despite the group being designated a terrorist organization…The company agreed to pay the US government a $25 million fine.”This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Today we wanted to share an episode from a little while back. We believe that it provides immense value and there are some new listeners, so we wanted to re-post it. On this episode, Dennis sits down with retired Deputy Chief and public safety liaison, Bill Mazur, clinical expert in understanding and treating trauma, Larissa Mason and Navy SEAL and CEO and Co-Founder at Protekt, Nick Norris. Nick Norris began his career in the military as a graduate of both the United States Naval Academy and Basic Underwater Demolition / SEAL (BUD/S) Class 247. Upon completion of SEAL training in 2004, Nick assumed progressively higher positions of leadership within Naval Special Warfare. His deployed roles included combat advisor to Iraqi and Afghan military units, Cross Functional Team Leader, and Ground Force Commander during combat operation in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Bill Mazur is a 25-year law enforcement veteran and retired in 2017 at the rank of Deputy Chief of Police. Bill holds a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Stockton University and a Master's Degree in Human Resources Training and Development in the Police Graduate Studies Program from Seton Hall University. Bill is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session #256, and currently serves as a Master Instructor with the FBI National Academy Associates, in their Comprehensive Officer Resiliency Training Program. He also acts as a Liaison for the NJ State Resilience Program for law Enforcement. Additionally, Bill currently serves on the Wellness Committee for the NJ State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) as an advisor. Larissa Mason is a clinical expert in understanding and treating trauma. She is a professional instructor for NJ State and maintains a thriving clinical practice. Currently working with clients throughout the USA and overseas, Larissa Mason focuses on areas including neurodivergent learning and responses as well as complex trauma resiliency and recovery, for both the impacted individual as well as their partner and families. Focus on professional mental health and individual resiliency regarding law enforcement and first responder stressor is emphasized. She helps individuals and families understand and work through the stressors that challenge them so they may lead healthier and happier lives. Through her career, Ms. Mason was supervisor at an adult partial care program for the severely mentally ill where she created and implemented the first clinical trauma track as a way to expound on the connection between trauma and mental health and offer appropriate support. Ms. Mason then supervised the county wide sexual assault response program for Cape May County where she directed the county's response to interpersonal violence, both domestic violence and sexual assault. There she worked to create pediatric guidelines for responding to childhood survivors of abuse. Ms. Mason also taught clinical work on the graduate level for Rutgers University and is a published author in the Encyclopedia of Sexual Violence. Kaitlyn Zedalis Kaitlyn Zedalis is the associate director of research, learning, and advocacy for the Covenant House Action and Research Tank (CHART) at Covenant House New Jersey, where she oversees agency initiatives related to research, program evaluation, and advocacy. Kaitlyn has assisted organizations across North America on the topics of human trafficking, screening and assessment, trauma informed care, and best practices for serving victims of human trafficking. She has a master's degree in social work from Stockton University, where she currently serves as an adjunct professor, and is a licensed social worker and licensed clinical alcohol and drug counselor. Key Points The Covenant House Action and Research Tank, or CHART, is an initiative of Covenant House New Jersey that conducts research, develops evidence based strategies, and seeks solutions for complex problems such as homelessness and human trafficking. Labor trafficking by forced criminality is any labor trafficking where the labor a person is required to perform is a crime, heavily intertwining criminalization and victimization. Covenant House New Jersey's research found that a supportive adult relationship in an individual's life serves as a protective factor from trafficking. In many cases, a victim is forced or coerced to remain in the situation they are in for fear of getting in trouble with the law, as they see themselves as engaging in criminal behavior rather than as a victim. Blake Rosell grew up in South Jersey near the Atlantic City area in a little shore town called Margate attending high school at Saint Augustine Prep in Richland , NJ were he played basketball and baseball.Basketball came out on top as his dominate sport and Blake received a scholarship to play basketball at DeSales University in Center Valley, PA for the Bulldogs finally transferring and finishing out his college basketball career right in his own backyard at Stockton University for the Ospreys graduating with a BA degree in Communication Studies. Blake worked in finance in Philadelphia Center City for a short period of time right after college and then ended up teaching and coaching boys basketball at Wildwood Catholic Academy North Wildwood, NJ for 2 1/2 years and then St. Joseph Academy in Hammonton, NJ for 2 years .Currently, Blake does his own radio show / podcast out of south Jersey completing his 3rd year behind the microphone on air.
