Not only is their world changing, their needs are changing as well. What was seen as hospitality to young people even a decade ago, might now be seen as too much or too little. In this Extra Shot episode, we continue with the mini-series on hospitality presented by the Quorum of the Presidents of Sevent. Listen in as Adam Wade weighs in on the current hospitality needs of youth and young adults, and how hospitality may need to be re-visioned in today's context. Don't we all need to catch our breath once in a while? Join me, ladies, this is a movement to help us all find the courage and energy to rewrite the scripts we have inherited about motherhood and make it our own. Grab the whole chapter here: www.melissallarena.com/waitlist P.S. The snippet I decided to read is transcribed below. It's a draft. Please do not copy any portion. Improvisation, puppetry, acting, all those things that I learned in my acting courses we have innately in us when we're young. And then slowly, it just is dragged out of us, and we just become who we are. And then somewhere down the line, we go, oh, man, we used to run around and play and do things for fun. So Chris Thomas Hayes (a former podcast guest who is a puppeteer for Sesame Street) is telling us, although he has a script for guidance, to create the character of Hoots he still needs to tap into a younger more playful version of himself to ensure the way he performs Hoots is relevant to his viewers. That sense of playfulness and its loss is particularly relevant for moms. We get so caught up in the stress of day-to-day life that we forget to just have fun. I'd say my personal definition of “playing” boils down to letting our kids lead the way during any activity or your inner little girl. When was the last time you let go of orchestrating a moment and lost track of time? Chances are that was the last time you played. We also don't always see the benefits of playing with our kids. Like I have to think about adding play with my children to my list. Meanwhile, my husband plays this role of fellow playmate as one he was made for. Unlike me, my husband walks in the door and doesn't scour the space for things to pick-up and clean; he looks for our chess set to play chess (and aims to beat) our eldest son. I think this is about letting ourselves get swept away in play too. It is important not to lose sight of your sense of fun. Have you ever considered enrolling in an acting class or dabbled      in any performance arts as a way of thinking of yourself as a different character?  When I took my client's advice about learning how to improvise and feel comfortable standing on a stage talking about myself, I enrolled in a course with Adam Wade. Adam has won The Moth's StorySlam, twenty-times; he is an expert in personal storytelling. The course was immersive and personally challenging. It was out of character for me to do anything like this and it turned out I was the only mom of young kids in class. The schlep from New Canaan, Connecticut to Korea town, NYC every Sunday afternoon was a pain, but worth it. The class culminated in each of us telling a brief story, on stage, in front of our peers, friends, and families. I wish I would have been able to hide behind a puppet like Chris. My performance involved a lot of preparation. In the same spirit of getting ready to play a puppet, I wanted to tell the story of who I was before I became a mom. To be authentic I had to go back to when I was studying and working in France during my MBA. I was living in Paris, in an icebox of an apartment, only eating Comté cheese and grilled chicken, and drinking Sancerre wine. I'm sure you can see how foreign that life felt to me at the time when I was a suburban mom with three young boys. As part of an exercise in my acting lesson we were asked to improvise a story based on a cherished personal object. Mine was an empty fragrance bottle. Towards the end of my three months in France I decided to backpack through the Côte d'Azur. I visited Grasse, the capital of the perfume industry, where I bought myself a bottle of Fragonard perfume. The empty bottle has always reminded me of that wanderlust time in France. I had to figure out how to tap into my pre-mom way of being so that the crowd could feel how free I felt back then, the bottle was my way in. My entire body changed as I told that story. I smiled. I felt as if I was back in Monaco with my heavy backpack hopping on-and-off trains during my last days in France. In that moment, I wasn't thinking about my long commute home that night or being a mom. But when I returned home I was happier and more playful. That class unlocked something in me that I had in France but had been missing in Connecticut. Imagine those moments in your life when you felt most free? What images are popping up in your mind? Might there be a way for you to act out those moments just to feel those feelings again today?  You can take an acting class to be more playful or you can just go back to the time when you were. We all have those moments that light us up. When was yours? Want the full chapter for free: www.melissallarena.com/waitlist Alternatively, want to be a beta reader? As we move into the 90s Dschord catalog and start a brand new year, what better way than with a band that pretty much epitomized the 90s post hc sound. that's right, we've finally arrived at the beginning of the Jawbox dynasty. Along for the ride this week is drummer Adam Wade, who drummed in not one, but two of the best bands of that era (Jawbox and Shudder To Think, respectively). Come for the stories, stay for the music!

First, it only lasted 19 weeks but 1975's Musical Chairs was a landmark television program, as it was the first game show with an African-American emcee, in Adam Wade.  It also had a fun theme song, a great cast of guests, and the cushy time slot after Match Game 75.  It was also recorded at The Ed Sullivan Theater!   Next, one of the most brilliant things on TV in the last decade and one of the most bizarre, Too Many Cooks aired in the dead of night on Adult Swim.  Within days, it was viral and repeated often.  We offer a live commentary while watching the show and get into details about some of the production, and what happened to some of the actors and actresses.   Finally, the 25th James Bond cinematic release hit theaters recently.  But would you believe there was a James Bond, er, Jimmy Bond to grace the small screen before Sean Connery?  In 1954, the CBS anthology series Climax! had an episode based on the Ian Fleming work Casino Royale.   Follow us at our socials Facebook: @itwasathingontvpodcast Instagram/Twitter @itwasathingontv   And send us an e-mail to itwasathingontv@gmail.com

My guest for episode 30 of The Courage, Coaching and Counseling Podcast is Adam Wade-Garrett. We talk about Geek Therapy. (or Nerd Counseling) Is that therapy for geeks or therapy when your therapist is a geek? You decide. We talk about Pokemon, Anime shows, D & D and role playing games, Harry Potter, identity, ADD, acceptance, relationships, anxiety and depression. Adam graduated from Western Seminary's Portland Campus in Fall of 2020, where he earned a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology and received specialized training in working with issues relating to faith and spirituality. Since graduating, Adam has been employed with Columbia River Mental Health Services (CRMHS) where he has worked with individuals experiencing a great diversity of therapy needs, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, career indecision, identity development and spiritual issues. He has also received specialized training in working with ADHD, which he has utilized to notable success in the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder during his time at Columbia River. Adam works with individuals ages 13 and older and prefers to take a brain-based, friendly and light-hearted approach to counseling. He is just as likely to tell someone that their low self-esteem comes from “chronic disruptions to 5-HTP utilization in the anterior cingulate gyrus” as he is to tell them that their view of themselves is “broken like a McDonald's ice cream machine.” He particularly enjoys working with individuals who are actively seeking after a sense of meaning or purpose and there's nothing in counseling that lights him up quite like watching someone discover and embrace “that thing” they were built to do. Forever a card-carrying geek (he actually does have a card, you should ask him to show it to you sometime), Adam prefers to spend his free time playing Magic: The Gathering or Dungeons & Dragons when he isn't sampling his partner's latest Keto concoction or overusing his toddler's name to make up for the fact that he spent the first 11 months of his life jokingly calling him “Poopy Budrickson” and now he won't respond to his actual name. Connect with Adam here: https://www.fircrestbh.com/adam-wade-garrett-lmhca The Courage, Coaching and Counseling Podcast launched March 30th, 2021. If you heard Adam's story and thought "that seems like a really remarkable human being" your instincts are exactly right.  I know I say this a lot, but I feel genuinely privileged to have gotten to know Adam through this process.  The reason he is one of the masters of this art form (he's won 20 Moth Story slams!! 20!!!) is that he is absolutely, completely authentic. By that I don't mean authentic in the backhanded complement way (like when you're diplomatically calling someone irascible or weird). The Adam Wade who tells you a story is the genuine article, with a completely honest and emotionally brave interaction with the world. You could do much worse than spend some time reading this profile of Adam in the New Yorker, listening to any of his stories which have been recorded for The Moth or watching any one of his Moth slam appearances.   You could also listen to either of his albums Live at the Magnet Theatre (which is now free on Youtube) or You Ought to Know. Adam also teaches personal storytelling at the Magnet Theatre. So, if you're looking for another pando project, you might want to consider learning from one of the best. While you're at it, be sure to give him a follow on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. As for Space Oddity, what more can be said? Wonderful, odd, inspiring, otherworldly and, as familiar as it may be, still a piece of art that reveals itself to me in a different way, every time I hear it (also, how about Myles' review this week? You'll have to believe me when I tell you he hadn't heard Adam's story). In this week's playlist -- Is There Tang On Mars? -- I try to give Adam's Hoboken space walk its own soundtrack.  Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.

February is Black History Month and this episode is all about the amazing African Americans throughout history. We start off with information on Black History Week/Month which began in the United States in 1915 (although it sounds like Kaiti says "1950" on the recording. oh Kaiti). Phil and Kaiti also highlight many black people throughout history who have sadly been missed and not given the acknowledgment they so rightfully deserve. That transitions into our thoughts on the film Hidden Figures now playing on Disney+. The episode ends with quiz questions worthy of the IBM 7090 ... that's not saying a lot!
