Tolkien presenta una criatura bastante peculiar: Sméagol, un hobbit que asesina a su pariente Déagol para despojarlo del anillo único, al que bautiza con el nombre de «precioso». Con el tiempo, el anillo altera el cuerpo y la mente de Smeagol, que pasa a llamarse Gollum, y cuando los protagonistas lo encuentran, Gollum «ama y odia el anillo tanto como se ama y se odia a sí mismo. Pero no puede deshacerse de él».* A lo largo de la obra de Tolkien, el lector ve cómo las dos personalidades de Gollum luchan entre sí. Smeagol quiere ser bueno y librarse de la influencia maligna del anillo; pero Gollum fantasea con la idea de recuperar su «precioso», intentando asesinar a Frodo en el proceso.La triste situación de Gollum no es más que un pálido reflejo de la lucha interna que existe en el interior de cada ser humano. En Romanos 7, el apóstol Pablo presenta su condición y la de cada ser humano. Todos tenemos un Smeagol interior, que quiere ser bueno, que reconoce que «la ley en sí misma es santa, y el mandamiento es santo, justo y bueno» (vers. 12), que tiene «el deseo de hacer lo bueno» (vers. 18) y le gusta «la ley de Dios» (vers. 22). Pero hay también un Gollum dentro que «se opone a mi capacidad de razonar» (vers. 23), que me engaña (vers. 11) y me hace «débil, vendido como esclavo al pecado» (vers. 14), de manera que «aunque tengo el deseo de hacer lo bueno, no soy capaz de hacerlo. No hago lo bueno que quiero hacer, sino lo malo que no quiero hacer» (vers. 18-19).Dejarnos gobernar por nuestra naturaleza pecaminosa nos llevará a la destrucción eterna, así como le sucedió al personaje ficticio Gollum, que murió al caer al interior de un volcán. The Dunedin City Council has voted to take a proposed 17.5 percent rates hike for the coming year to the public. Tess backgrounds what is driving the rise. The council is also considering a proposal to sell its lines company, Aurora Energy. Asbestos has been found in a Southland dump that is eroding into the sea at Bluecliffs. “A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we foresake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day!”There and Back AgainWith the success of Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2003, he proved that epic fantasy storytelling could not only work, but that it could be worth the risk to film them all at once. It could be argued that the biggest downside to this production method – filming all three movies at once then releasing them separately over the course of three years – is that many awards voters didn't feel each film deserved to be recognized individually. This film won all 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, but should the previous efforts also fared better? Regardless, Jackson delivers an epic trilogy, and this film's extended edition certainly gives us a lot to enjoy. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our conversations about the Lord of the Rings trilogy with a conversation about Jackson's 2003 film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.Here's a hint at what we talk about.The opening's fantastic, but why does Smeagol talk the way he does when he's morphed into Gollum? Andy has a bit of a quibble with that. We look at a number of the added scenes in the extended edition, focusing on the death of Saruman, the mouth of Sauron, and the relationship between Faramir and Eowen. How does the mad steward Denethor work for us? What about the massive armies and the battle at the end? Does it go a bit too far? We talk about a few of our favorite sequences – the lighting of the beacons, Shelob's lair and Sam rescuing Frodo from the Orc tower, Sam picking Frodo up to carry him up Mount Doom. We continue looking at the roles of women in the films and how Jackson and his writing team handled expanding their roles. And then, of course, we ponder the plight of the cave trolls. The olyphaunts aren't treated very well either, but we've seen cave troll abuse from the start. No matter how many points we have to poke at in this film, it's an easy one to love. “A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we foresake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day!”There and Back AgainWith the success of Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy in 2003, he proved that epic fantasy storytelling could not only work, but that it could be worth the risk to film them all at once. It could be argued that the biggest downside to this production method – filming all three movies at once then releasing them separately over the course of three years – is that many awards voters didn't feel each film deserved to be recognized individually. This film won all 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, but should the previous efforts also fared better? Regardless, Jackson delivers an epic trilogy, and this film's extended edition certainly gives us a lot to enjoy. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our conversations about the Lord of the Rings trilogy with a conversation about Jackson's 2003 film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.Here's a hint at what we talk about.The opening's fantastic, but why does Smeagol talk the way he does when he's morphed into Gollum? Andy has a bit of a quibble with that. We look at a number of the added scenes in the extended edition, focusing on the death of Saruman, the mouth of Sauron, and the relationship between Faramir and Eowen. How does the mad steward Denethor work for us? What about the massive armies and the battle at the end? Does it go a bit too far? We talk about a few of our favorite sequences – the lighting of the beacons, Shelob's lair and Sam rescuing Frodo from the Orc tower, Sam picking Frodo up to carry him up Mount Doom. We continue looking at the roles of women in the films and how Jackson and his writing team handled expanding their roles. And then, of course, we ponder the plight of the cave trolls. The olyphaunts aren't treated very well either, but we've seen cave troll abuse from the start. No matter how many points we have to poke at in this film, it's an easy one to love.
