Donna J is from Florida, she is sharing on Step 2 at the Addition By Subtraction meeting held on zoom at the end of January 2024. I just added an event that is happening very soon (9-11th) in Texas, The Texas Al-Anon Alateen Conference details here: https://scast.us/texalateen Update on the discussion survey from the last week, I was surprised by how many people responded (thank you for doing that) the vast majority were in favor of it, so I am going to move forward with it. It will be a private forum, that was in the lead by quite a bit followed by discord then a facebook group and all the rest after that. It surprised me a bit I was thinking it would be discord but it was a distant second. It will take me a couple of weeks to get it set up, forums have a million settings to tweak and Ill make it as private as I can. I will let you know as soon as its ready, again thank you. If you have any AA or Al-Anon event coming up let me know I am happy to help get the word out. https://scast.us/events Email: sobercast@gmail.com Support Sober Cast: https://sobercast.com/donate AA Event List: https://scast.us/events If you have an AA roundup, retreat, convention or workshop coming up, we would be happy to give you a shout out here on the podcast and list the event on the Sober Cast website. This episode navigates this question using an associative method which links stories and sounds, forming a non-linear audio collage. Listeners are invited to tune in to their affective and embodied responses to end time stories including Lulu Miller's podcast and Kiyoshi Kurosawa's horror film, and stories of endurance, with Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner's poem and Tanya Tagaq's audiobook.Nadège Paquette (she/they) is a white settler living in Tiotià:ke/Montréal, on the lands and waters of the Kanien'kehá:ka Nation, where they are completing a master's degree in English Literature at Concordia University. Their research interests aggregate around the relationship between human and nonhuman forms of life and nonlife. They are drawn to narratives of the future extrapolating present troubles and delving into already-existing Indigenous, decolonial, queer, and non-anthropocentric alternatives to a colonial and capitalist world. For them, some of those alternative worlds take the form of collective gardens where they love to work with plants, soil, water, animal, and human neighbors.*Show NotesMusic:Tom Bonheur https://www.instagram.com/dj.g3ntil/Kovd, Kvelden, Tell What You Know, Ivory Pillow, and Fever Creep by Blue Dot Sessions https://app.sessions.blue/Podcast:“The Wordless Place” Lulu Miller https://radiolab.org/podcast/wordless-place“Why Podcast?” Hannah McGregor and Stacey Copeland https://kairos.technorhetoric.net/27.1/topoi/mcgregor-copeland/index.htmlShort Film:Anointed, Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner and Dan Lin https://www.kathyjetnilkijiner.com/videos-featuring-kathy/Film:Pulse, Kiyoshi KurosawaAdditional sounds from:“Interview with Tanya Tagaq,” Alicia Atout https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FupatQbcTeM“Open Dialogues: Daniel Heath Justice,” Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrBN8_IGuuw“Monster 怪物,” United for Peace Film Festival https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8OJulGi1Rg*Works CitedBouich, Abdenour. 2021. “Coeval Worlds, Alter/Native Words.” Transmotion 7 (2). https://doi.org/10.22024/UniKent/03/tm.980.Butler, Judith. 2003. “Violence, Mourning, Politics.” Studies in Gender and Sexuality 4 (1): 9–37. https://doi.org/10.1080/15240650409349213.Chion, Michel. 2017. We're making some changes here at Donna J.We're leaning hard into the anti-aging and longevity aspects of wellness because I plan on living to the ripe old age of 107 and need healthy, cool people to hang out with. We've come to accept those aches, pains and illnesses that we get after 50 as "normal" aging, and they're not, they're warning signs that you need to make lifestyle changes.

CALM Conversations about Learning
Teaching & Learning While Black, Part 1: Convo w/Professor Donna J. Watson

Thank you for bringing your ears right here for episode 16 of CALM Conversations about Learning where we lean in to re-envision our children's education with and for the folks who matter most: teachers, parents and of course, our babies, big and small! This episode kicks off a 2-part conversation series dedicated to teaching and learning while Black, wherein you'll hear from two professors who have quite a bit to say on the subject. This week, Black Studies Professor Donna J. Watson (aka dj watson) joins us. I've known dj for over 20 years, first as  my professor then my mentor. I remember sitting in her classes then later working as her teaching assistant and just being in awe of how brilliant, funny and serious she was about her students becoming critical thinkers, which she referred to as “playing intellectual ball."  And for the first time ever in my school life, I thought, “I wanna be like that when I become a teacher.”    Over the years, dj and I have written, performed, and published creative works together and we've even run a community writer's workshop with other brilliant Black writers. She is one of my most cherished friends and though we are now on opposite coasts, she continues to inspire me as an educator, intellectual and artist. In this conversation, we discuss teaching and learning while black within the context of nature, land, art, perfectionism and why Black Studies matters, which is timely as California just made Ethnic Studies mandatory for high school graduation. I have a feeling that it's going to be a wild ride!Anyway, I've learned so much from this wise woman and I trust that you'll take away some nuggets to chew on from this conversation with Professor Donna J. Watson!Chunks & Nuggets Worth Summarizing: Trees, like humans, speak a language and possess the capacity for friendship and community.Making mistakes is a part of being human. Striving for perfection is a European construct.Growing and harvesting food for oneself= personal power and community power.Grownups need encouragement and positive feedback, too.Art is everywhere.Go to school but know what school is and know what it means to be educated.Synthesizing and Internalizing:Nature helps teach us how to become better humans. Let's take the children outside as much as possible so that they learn to love-- not fear nature.Everyone, both children and adults must remember that to err is human. So, let's begin with ourselves so that we can model self-compassion for the babies! Pay attention to the constructs that are rooted in racism and fear. In school, children of color are often taught to go against their culture of collectivism to compete in unhealthy ways. The message becomes "be better than" instead of "be excellent." When we believe that there is enough for everybody, we believe that we are enough. And this is where the brilliance begins. Let's  grow some food then share some food. Make art, find art and make space for our children to do the same so that they know that they are creators for life.Let's decide to think critically and creatively about what it means to educate our children. Follow DJ Watson on Instagram @mudrunink and check out her exquisite paintings!References from the Conversation:Three- time Kentucky Derby winner: Isaac Burns Murphy (1861-1896)Do the Podcast-Listener Thing: Follow. Joana P. In the South, as anywhere, coping with the death of a loved one is different for everyone. Funerals, clearing out estates, and caring for the dying are necessary rituals that are unavoidable for most of us. Southern writers, like most writers, often find inspiration for fiction and memoirs in the passing of family members and that is why we decided it would be a good theme for this episode of Brain Fertilizer. Carla Martin-Wood, Donna J. Dotson, and Ashley Fields are our featured writers for this episode of Brain Fertilizer. This week on The Spectator Film Podcast… Underworld (2003) 3.27.20 Featuring: Austin, Maxx Commentary Track begins at 17:58 — Notes — “Sullied Blood, Semen and Skin: Vampires and the Spectre of Miscegenation” by Kimberly A. Frohreich from Gothic Studies — Here’s a neat essay delving into the cycle of 90’s/00’s vampire media in which Underworld participates. Frohreich reviews the racial subtext these texts share and points to additional resources for understanding this cycle. A free PDF version of this file can be found by searching Google Scholar. We’ll include relevant passages below: “Like Blade, Underworld’s plot also centres on racial purity versus racial mixing, with the Lycans positioned as ‘vectors of category transformation’, as Haraway would suggest. Indeed, the Lycans’ main strategy in the racial war against the vampires is to prove that the two races can be mixed or combined. In other words, they fight to miscegenate, to create a half-vampire, half-Lycan, or mixed-race being. The vampires, on the other band, maintain a belief system in which this mixing would not only be an ‘abomination’, it would also be impossible. Indeed, for Viktor, one of the vampire eiders, vampires and Lycans are not separate races, but are separate species…As a previous slave-owner, and the image of a Southern plantation patriarch, Viktor believes in the polygenetic origin of the two ‘species’ and rejects the belief in the ‘sons of the Corvinus clan, one bitten by bat, one by wolf, claiming it is merely ‘a ridiculous legend’. In contrast, the Lycans depend on this monogenetic origin, or this ‘legend’, in their attempt to create a mixed-race subject” (37-38). “In other words, the film suggests that being part of a race involves sharing a common history, one that in turn defines the racial group. Where the Lycans are able to recruit humans to their cause, the vampires’ genocide of the Lycans appears as a strategy to maintain their own version of history. Indeed, the vampire rulers limit the sharing of blood, and thus of history, to themselves. As the spectator discovers with the vampire Selene, the character through which the narrative is focalised, the history recorded in writing is false, while other past events were never recorded. Because Selene does not initially know that the Lycans were once the slaves of the vampires, and because she (wrongly) believes the former to be responsible for the murder of her human family, Selene (along with the spectator) originally sees the vampires as the victims of the violent, animalistic, and bloodthirsty Lycans rather than the reverse. The film, therefore, highlights how historical discourse is used to define the racial Other through the falsification and erasure of past events and memories, or the prevalence of white male history over the voices of the other” (38). As in traditional vampire narratives, the female body in Underworld is also fought over and depicted as in need of protection. However, the film also rewrites the (white) female body as vampire and as post-feminist ‘girl power’ model. Almost a daughter to Viktor, Selene is one of the elite female vampires who need to be protected from being ‘tainted’ by Lycans. Yet, Selene will not let anyone do battle for her or over her. Clothed from head to toe in black leather, she is immediately set apart from other female vampires who remain at the castle in extravagant dresses while she joins male vampires as a ‘death dealer’ in their hunt for Lycans. Just as Selene refuses to play the role of the stereotypical elite female, she also eventually refuses to assist other vampires in their fight for racial purity” (39) Celluloid Vampires: Life After Death in the Modern World by Stacey Abbott — This book serves as an admirable introduction to vampire cinema, even though a few of its assertions appear strenuous. It even features a chapter discussing Underworld alongside the other films from the 90’s/00’s “cyborg vampire” cycle, like Blade (1997). “Underoworld” by Roger Ebert from Rogerebert.com — Here’s the link to the Ebert review Maxx referenced. ‘A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, And Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century’ by Donna J. Haraway — Here’s a link to Donna J. Haraway’s groundbreaking essay. Modest_Witness@Second_Millenium. FemaleMan©_Meets_OncoMouse™: Feminism and Technoscience by Donna J. Haraway — This is a fascinating book by Donna Haraway, and I’m including it here because it discusses the figure of the vampire throughout. Anyone interested in learning more about vampires should dedicate time to exploring Haraway’s work and concepts of post-humanism. Check out some of the interesting passages below: “Lurching beyond the symptom in the first paragraphs, however, I acknowledge that a specific figure animates this essay. The figure is the vampire: the one who pollutes lineages on the wedding night; the one who effects category transformations by illegitimate passages of substance; the one who drinks and infuses blood in a paradigmatic act of infecting whatever poses as pure; the one who eschews sun worship and does its work at night; the one who is undead, unnatural, and perversely incorruptible. In this essay, I am instructed by the vampire, and my questions are about the vectors of infection that trouble racial categories in twentieth-century bioscientific constructions of universal humanity. For better and for worse, vampires are vectors of category transformation in a racialized, historical, national unconscious. A figure that both promises and threatens racial and sexual mixing, the vampire feeds off the normalized human, and the monster finds such contaminated food to be nutritious. The vampire also insists on the nightmare of racial violence behind the fantasy of purity in the rituals of kinship. It is impossible to have a settled judgment about vampires. Defined by their categorical ambiguity and troubling mobility, vampires do not rest easy (or easily) in the boxes labeled good and bad. Always transported and shifting, the vampire's native soil is more nutritious, and more unheimlich, than that. Deeply shaped by murderous ideologies since their modern popularization in European accounts in the late eighteenth century—especially racism, sexism, and homophobia— stories of the undead also exceed and invert each of those systems of discrimination to show the violence infesting supposedly wholesome life and nature and the revivifying promise of what is supposed to be decadent and against nature” (214-215) “Just when one feels secure in condemning the toothy monster's violations of the integrity of the body and the community, history forces one to remember that the vampire is the figure of the Jew accused of the blood crime of polluting the wellsprings of European germ plasm and bringing both bodily plague and national decay, or that it is the figure of the diseased prostitute, or the gender pervert, or the aliens and the travelers of all sorts who cast doubt on the certainties of the self-identical and well-rooted ones who have natural rights and stable homes. The vampires are the immigrants, the dislocated ones, accused of suckingthe blood of the rightful possessors of the land and of raping the virgin who must embody the purity of race and culture. So, in an orgy of solidarity with all the oppressed, one identifies firmly with the outlaws who have been the vampires in the perfervid imaginations of the upstanding members of the whole, natural, truly human, organic communities. But then one is forced to remember that the vampire is also the marauding figure of unnaturally breeding capital, which penetrates every whole being and sucks it dry in the lusty production and vastly unequal accumulation of wealth. Yet the conjunction of Jew, capitalist, queer, andalien is freighted with too much literal genocide to allow even the jeremiad against transnational capital to carry the old-time conviction of moral certainty and historical truth. The vampire is the cosmopolitan, the one who speaks too many languages and cannot remember the native tongue, and the scientist who forces open the parochial dogmas of those who are sure they know what nature is. In short, once touched by the figure of this monster, one is forced to inhabit the swirling semantic field of vampire stories. In those zones, uninvited associations and dissociations are sure to undo one's sense of the self same, which is always neatly prelabeled to forestall moral, epistemological, and political scrutiny” (215) “Biology's epistemological and technical task has been to produce a historically specific kind of human unity; namely, membership in a single species, the human race, Homo sapiens. Biology discursively establishes and performs what willcount as human in powerful domains of knowledge and technique. A striking product of early biological discourse, race, like sex and nature, is about the apparatuses for fabricating and distributing life and death in the modern regimes ofbiopower. Like nature and sex, at least from the nineteenth century race was constituted as an object of knowledge by the life sciences, especially biology, physical anthropology, and medicine. The institutions, research projects, measuring instruments, publication practices, and circuits of money and people that made up the life sciences were the machine tools that crafted “race” as an object of scientific knowledge over the past 200 years. Then, in the middle of the twentieth century, the biological and medical sciences began to disown their deadly achievement and worked like Sisyphus to roll the rock of race out of the upscale hillside neighborhoods being built in post-World War II prosperous times to house the new categories of good natural science. All too predictably, the new universal, like the suburbs and the laboratories, were all too white” (217)

Whether the status quo is prepared to admit it or not, climate change is not some mysterious future event looming on the horizon — it is already happening, here, now.So: how will you choose to respond? In this episode of the Good Life Revival Podcast, I revisit last week’s topic of climate change grief, and whether we ought to let go of the hope of salvation in favor of taking direct action to brace ourselves for what we know we can reasonably expect from a severely disrupted global climate. One crucial part of the process of preparing ourselves, I believe, is to reckon with our emotional reactions to what is unfolding in front of us. To deny the pain that we all feel when we observe the open wounds on the land that we walk upon is to numb ourselves to reality — to continue, in vain, to build a wall between ourselves and the natural world which sustains us.Acknowledging and confronting the seemingly insurmountable pain of a dying planet should only imbue our work with that much more urgency.Drawing from the writings of Steven Martyn, Kat Anderson, Trebbe Johnson and Donna Haraway, I make the case here that what we need now more than ever are visionary new myths to guide us towards novel ways and means of co-creation with the land.We do ourselves no favors by merely hoping for a better world, or praying that our leaders will miraculously change course — recognizing that top-down solutions have failed to materialize, the time has come for us to begin self-organizing in the interests of preserving and regenerating whatever is within our reach. All the while, we must not be afraid to stare down the very real existential fear that looms in the background. You are justified in your fear, but it is no excuse for inaction. You don’t get to choose what problems you face in life, but you can always decide how to feel about them. I hope you’ll join me in this difficult but necessary work.Score a free audiobook today when you sign up for Libro.fm using my referral link.Bibliography:Anderson, M. Kat. What unique qualities and skill sets do you bring to the table? Are you comfortable exercising and showcasing your abilities? Too often, it can take decades for scientists and researchers to build up the courage and confidence to lead with their abilities. If you find yourself struggling to step boldly into your wheelhouse - you aren’t alone. Here to help you embrace your curiosity, analytical perspective, and drive to ask questions is Dr. Donna J. Dean. Donna has had a distinguished career with 27 years in the federal government at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), followed by five years as a senior science advisor at Lewis-Burke Associates, a DC-based government relations consulting firm. She recently compiled her experiences in a highly effective guide entitled “Getting the Most Out of Your Mentoring Relationships: A Handbook for Women in STEM.” Dr. Dean attended Berea College in Kentucky, graduating with a B.A. in chemistry, and minors in biology and mathematics, and then received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Duke University. As you can imagine, the road wasn’t easy, Donna had to forge her path and learn many lessons on the fly. One situation that came up from her time at NIH involved Donna exercising her keen analytical skills and innate curiosity. Noticing that her boss’s message wasn’t connecting during an important meeting with several people in the room, Donna had to find a way to let him know after the fact in the most polite, yet direct, way possible, as time was short. In her role as a mentor over the years - Donna has worked hard to encourage up and coming leaders to develop and expand their skill sets. Donna is so passionate about equipping young leaders that she wrote a book about it. You can explore the helpful insights Donna has to share by reading her book - the link is in the resources section of this post. Ask questions Almost everyone enjoys talking about themselves or something they are passionate about. Leaders like you can use that to your advantage to find common ground with people you don’t naturally have an affinity toward. Donna says that one of the best skills that scientists and researchers bring to the table is their ability to ask questions and get to the heart of the issue at hand. In her career - Donna has taken the initiative to lead with questions. Tasked with the effort to form the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering at NIH from the ground up - Donna asked a pivotal question - how do I do this? With no staff, budget, space, or grants, Donna went to work - reaching out and taking the time to ask questions. Donna operated at the highest levels within NIH. She is a skilled, first-in-her family college graduate (and first PhD, as a result), who made a major impact in her specialty. Donna has several valuable insights and experiences to share from her impressive career - make sure to catch her full conversation with Mark by listening to this episode. In 1902, chemist Harvey Wiley launched a unique experiment to test the safety of food additives. He recruited a group of young men and fed them meals laced with chemicals to see what the effects might be. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Wiley's "poison squad" and his lifelong crusade for food safety. We'll also follow some garden paths and puzzle over some unwelcome weight-loss news. Intro: In 1887, an inadvertent dot in a telegram cost wool dealer Frank Primrose $20,000. For 25 years, two Minnesota brothers-in-law exchanged a weaponized pair of moleskin pants. Harvey Washington Wiley's poison squad dined in formal clothing and wrote their own inspirational slogan. "Guyasuta and the Fall of Indian America" with Brady Crytzer

Nearly a century before the United States declared the end of the Indian Wars, the fate of Native Americans was revealed in the battle of Fallen Timbers. In 1794, General Anthony Wayne led the first American army— the Legion of the United States—against a unified Indian force in the Ohio country. The Indians were routed and forced to vacate their lands. It was the last of a series of Indian attempts in the East to retain their sovereignty and foreshadowed what would occur across the rest of the continent. In Guyasuta and the Fall of Indian America, historian Brady J. Crytzer traces how American Indians were affected by the wars leading to American Independence through the life of one of the period’s most influential figures. Born in 1724, Guyasuta is perfectly positioned to understand the emerging political landscape of America in the tumultuous eighteenth century. As a sachem of the vaunted Iroquois Confederacy, for nearly fifty years Guyasuta dedicated his life to the preservation and survival of Indian order in a rapidly changing world, whether it was on the battlefield, in the face of powerful imperial armies, or around a campfire negotiating with his French, British, and American counterparts. Guyasuta was present at many significant events in the century, including George Washington’s expedition to Fort Le Boeuf, the Braddock disaster of 1755, Pontiac’s Rebellion and the Battle of Bushy Run in 1763, and the Battle of Oriskany during the American Revolution. Guyasuta’s involvement in the French and British wars and the American War for Independence were all motivated by a desire to retain relevance for Indian society. It was only upon the birth of the United States of America that Guyasuta finally laid his rifle down and watched as his Indian world crumbled beneath his feet. A broken man, debilitated by alcoholism, he died near Pittsburgh in 1794. Supported by extensive research and full of compelling drama, Guyasuta and the Fall of Indian America unravels the tangled web of alliances, both white and native, and explains how the world of the American Indians could not survive alongside the emergent United States. Brady Crytzer teaches history at Robert Morris University. A recipient of both the Donald S. Kelly and Donna J. McKee Awards for outstanding scholarship, he is the author of Major Washington’s Pittsburgh and the Mission to Fort Le Boeuf and Fort Pitt: A Frontier History.

Daniel Portman: "Yes, i play in moskow tomorrow" 22 апреля вышел девятый релиз Rezone Records.
