For Episode 56, I wanted to take a deep-dive into some of the many aspects of what actually goes into the planning of a wedding — from the engagement to honeymoon — from a highly reliable source. And so, it was a true pleasure to revisit one of my all-time most favorite bridal couples, Kevin and Jackie Nelson Donovan, pictured here at their June 2019 wedding. Although Kevin only introduces Jackie during our conversation, it’s a very sweet moment, so much like this beautiful couple themselves. And then the lovely, articulate and very Zen bride, Jackie Nelson Donovan, takes over…sharing so much of her personal experiences as a bride, from her childhood dreams of being married at the American Yacht Club, which was so important to her family to the most positive and productive mindset you can have while wedding planning. The year was 2005 and Kevin was working for a large engineering firm. On the side, Kevin had been developing websites as a hobby, just like he had been doing since 6th grade. He had yet to consider the fact that he could continue this hobby as a career and make a profit. In episode 199 of Journey to $100 Million, Kevin shares the instance when he realized he was ready for something bigger than just sitting in a cubicle. Although Kevin loved the engineering firm at which he was currently employed and appreciated the opportunity, he ultimately knew he wanted to start his own business. He started to explore and meet different business owners and individuals that began to request website designs, and for the first time, he was being offered money to build these sites! He started making money from these websites equivalent to what he was making at the firm he was working at. Once he realized he could make the same amount of money, if not more, he was hooked. He talked to his company about leaving to start his own business and the rest is history! Be sure to listen in to the upcoming episodes where Kevin will be talking about how he started his business, the challenges, situations he had to deal with, and the groups & relationships he made that got Kevin where he is today! — Erik J. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255 plus 1 for military. https://www.stayalivevideo.com/resourcesKevin Hines shares his personal story about being born in squalor to biological parents living with bipolar disorder who dealt with the disease with hard core drugs and alcohol. Thankfully, Kevin was adopted, along with his brother and sister, by Patrick and Deborah Hines. Although Kevin led a good life, he struggled at a young age with bipolar disease. But was so young he did not know how to articulate this pain to his parents. He was in immeasurable mental instability. Eventually, at 19 years of age, he could no longer fight the voices in his head telling him, "You have to die." So he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. Kevin immediately realized he had made the biggest mistake of his life. Kevin will tell you how he survived the fall with the help of a guardian angel. He has many insights that can benefit you and your family who might be in pain and despair. When you are in despair, find someone to emphasize with your pain and tell them your truth until you are safe. Suicide is the problem, not the answer. We love you. You are intended to be here. #stayalivenow
Today I chatted with Kevin from Debt Free Happens, who just happened to find himself in Orlando for FinCon. As the good Disney opportunist would, he jumped at that chance and planned ONE day to visit all four parks. So many conventions and sports competitions are hosted in Orlando, and it's not always possible to combine those with a full Disney vacation. This doesn't mean you can't take advantage of the flight and proximity and sneak away to the parks...even if it's just for one day! Kevin also has a lot of really great budgeting tips from his day at Walt Disney World to share, so you are sure to find gold here to help you plan your next Disney vacation. The Plan: Four Disney Parks in One Day Trip Planning Details Resort: Rosen Shingle Creek First time to Walt Disney World? Yes for both Kevin and his wife, Erin Memory Maker: No (Decision was based on prioritizing time on rides.) Planning tools: Purchasing tickets - Disney's site; Disney Food Blog (specifically YouTube videos); Unlocking the Magic podcast Tickets: One day Park Hopper + Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party ticket Planning tips: Whoever's best with maps in your party, have them study each park intensely and learn where the rides are so that you're not sitting there trying to figure it out when you're at any of these parks. The Tuesday before they went, they watched the wait times during the day on My Disney Experience. This gave an idea of what to expect on a Tuesday. The key is you can't watch a Saturday and prepare for a Tuesday. If you purchase anything and are staying on property, have your packages sent to your resort! This is completely complimentary. If you are staying off property, you can have them sent to the front of the park at no charge (or sent home for an additional fee) which is super helpful when you are trying to dash through all four parks in one day. Tips for packing your park bag for Disney World Kevin's tip for bringing bags to Disney World is that first of all, you absolutely need one, and second, avoid a bigger backpack (he recommends a smaller drawstring backpack). They actually brought two and made sure one was waterproof, which was less than $10 on Amazon. The additional benefit of having a small drawstring bag is they easily fit in the pouches in ride vehicles. This actually makes boarding and departing much quicker! What to pack: Ponchos - Kevin feels strongly about stretching your budget and not purchasing the more expensive version Disney offers. Dramamine Sunblock Hats (make sure to take them off for fast rides!) Snacks Extra socks Ziploc baggies How packing Dramamine saved the day First of all, there are three different products. There's the original Dramamine, which everyone talks about, but that makes you sleepy. Drowsiness is not an option if you are fitting all four parks into one day! So there's a less drowsy version, which you can take one to two per 24 hours. There's also a non-drowsy version which is basically just concentrated ginger tablets and you can take four of those per 24 hours. Although Kevin mixed those, we are not medical professionals, so you probably want to consult your physician. We are just sharing what worked for Kevin. He also wore Sea-Bands on each wrist. Although these tools made a massive difference in how motion-sickness affected his day, he still had to monitor how he was feeling and make adjustments to the sequence of rides to make sure he didn't get too sick. Simulations, It's a Small World, and Spaceship Earth were actually the worst. The Itinerary Because this was a party day, purchasing a party ticket allowed them to start the day at rope-drop and end at the close of the party (midnight). First park: Animal Kingdom Even though the park's posted opening was 9:00 am, they ended up opening up at 8:00 am for everyone headed to Pandora (either Navi River Journey or Flight of Passage). The Cast Members slowly walk you back to Pandora. This strategy was a huge success - Kevin and Erin were OFF of Flight of Passage at 8:55 am. They were able to do the most popular ride in the park before the park even opened (and without FastPasses!) Their next ride was Kilimanjaro Safaris because the animals are out more in the morning (or maybe late in the day). FastPasses: Expedition Everest Dinosaur Navi River Journey First meal of the day: Satu'li Canteen based on the recommendation from The Disney Food Blog. Second park: Hollywood Studios Transportation: Bus from Animal Kingdom to Hollywood Studios (arrival at 1:30 pm) Third park: Epcot Transportation: Because they were told a bus would be a 20-minute ride, Kevin opted to walk. Due to the construction and the heat, Kevin actually found this walk quite challenging and was one of two regrets of the day. The walk ended up taking 40 minutes (arrival at 5:15 pm). Fourth park: Magic Kingdom (Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party) Transportation: Monorail - Kevin wanted to point out that he was unaware that in all of his planning, he did not know that the monorail does not take you directly from Epcot to the Magic Kingdom. Instead, it drops you off at the Ticket and Transportation Center. At this point, you take another monorail from the ticketing center over to the Magic Kingdom (arrival 7:00 pm). Budgeting tips for Walt Disney World Although the day is quite expensive and unfortunately the cost of the tickets is a significant expense, Kevin and Erin have worked hard to eliminate debt and they certainly were going to keep that mindset in planning their Disney day. He has kindly provided budgeting tips and advice he acquired while planning his Disney trip. Regarding the cost of the tickets, the best advice is to look at the calendar and review peak times and off-peak times. Kevin visited during an off-peak time, so he was able to save a few dollars on tickets. Consider staying off-property, as those resorts and hotels are generally less expensive. Do not go into debt in order to do a Disney vacation. Disney is not going anywhere anytime soon. You're going to have a much more enjoyable time if you're not sitting here worried about whether or not you can make the minimum payment on your credit card when you get home. Disney World, when you pay cash for it, is way more fun than when you're going into debt for it. If you're not staying on property, you don't have to have a Magic Band. Disney gives you a card, don't lose it because that would disrupt your day, so don't feel the need to spend additional dollars for Magic Bands for each person in your party. That will really add up! Drink the free water! It's available at any Quick Service or cart with fountain beverages in the parks and resorts. You can bring a refillable water bottle if you would like to, just stay hydrated. Bring snacks. Consider not eating breakfast at the resort. If you're staying at an offsite hotel and they have a continental breakfast, of course, take advantage of that. If not, bring a box of cereal or have groceries shipped to your resort (we recommend Shipt or Amazon Prime Now). By eliminating one meal a day, you're going to save a ton of money. Breakfast alone can save hundreds of dollars depending on the size of your family, and you can take it one step further by getting some bread and making peanut butter and jelly and having those for lunch. Ponchos - Kevin's wife bought theirs at Walmart for $.97 each. They brought four ponchos: two for Kali River Rapids and two if they were to get caught in the rain during the day. Try to skip the gift shops at the ride exists and buy souvenirs at Disney outlets instead. Pack your park bag at home, then you are less likely to forget something. If you pack it and home and realize you are not checking sunscreen off your list, for example, it will be much less expensive to buy it at home as opposed to the parks! Uber or Lyft? Uber Lyft Minnie Vans (operated by Lyft) - photo courtesy of Disney Parks Blog[/caption] Kevin's Favorite Park Oh Man, I don't know, you know, our Epcot experience was stunted...So each one is so unique. I guess I would say we had the least amount of expectations for Hollywood Studios and that was the biggest surprise. More about Kevin and Debt Free Happens Debt Free Happens was created to share Kevin and Erin's experience of paying off over $107,000 of debt in less than three years. And don't think they made $200,000 a year to accomplish that massive goal. They actually made $83,000 combined in the beginning and then $170,000 in the end (two incomes combined). What you will like best about Debt Free Happens is that Kevin is open and honest with the mistakes that they've made in the past because they truly want to get you headed in the right direction. Their goal is to help you find a financially independent life and not let the fear of your debt paralyze you. Just never underestimate what you're able to do in your life, what you're able to do for yourself what you're able to do for others, you know, despite whatever happened in the past. Do know that there's always an opportunity to be able to make changes and to go forward and live that life that you really want to. You can find Kevin at Debt Free Happens, on Twitter, and on Facebook. **Report the Magic is not affiliated with Debt Free Happens**
In this episode, we interview former West Morris Central runningback Kevin Saum. Kevin suffered a traumatic brain injury called Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) during a high school football game against Morris Knolls on October 5, 2007. SIS has a 50% mortality rate and nearly 100% morbidity rate, yet Kevin miraculously survived with full cognitive and physical abilities, but was no longer able to pursue his dream of playing college football. Although Kevin knew how fortunate he was, his transition to life after sports was trying. Despite his disappointment and depression, Kevin felt inspired to be the voice for those athletes who weren’t as lucky as he was and cannot share their story. Heads ‘N Tales was created to be a platform where athletes can share their tales of perseverance to help inspire anyone in their time of need. After graduating from Georgetown with a master’s degree in sports industry management and with hopes of raising concussion awareness and improving sports safety, Kevin Saum established the Heads ‘N Tales podcast to share inspiring stories of perseverance and the latest innovations in sports health. Keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times folks and buckle up as you listen to Kevin's amazing story of heart break, despair and triumph.
Welcome to the Lancaster Story Slam podcast! Even though our February Story Slam was two weeks after Valentine’s Day, we decided to try the theme of “First Crush” and wow! Did we get crushed! We heard some hilarious and some heartbreaking stories about first loves - all the stories were excellent - the judging was really close - and we ended up with a tie! Christian Carrion and Marcus Grimm both walked away with prized pint glasses and both were invited back to our November Grand Slam! Christian Carrion was a first time storyteller. It’s so exciting when a first-timer gets up on stage and crushes it! Congratulations Chris! If you think you want to tell a story on stage, but want some guidance, check out our Storytelling Workshop! In this one night session we’ll cover basic story structure, creative language, and more. It’s a great way to build your confidence before taking to the mic. We only do this workshop once a year, and this year the date is April 18th. Our co-winner for the First Crush Story Slam was Marcus Grimm. Marcus discussed his first television crush and how she kept resurfacing in his life. Our final storyteller is our dear friend Kevin Beerman. Friends of Kevin know this remarkable and heartwarming story, so it was great to hear him tell this onstage. Here’s Kevin. We loved this story. Although Kevin is a first-time storyteller, his wife Donna Talarico has told stories often at Lancaster Story Slam. Together, they organize Hippocamp - a Creative Nonfiction Writers Conference, which has brought in some of today’s greatest authors. Hippocamp 2018 will take place the weekend of August 24th. Google hippocamp 2018 to learn more! If you have been a podcast listener, but haven’t made it to one of our live events, you should make plans to come out to Tellus360 in 2018! On this episode of HDTGB, comedian & improviser Kevin Delgado returns to discuss the Thanksgiving Day Classic, WWE Survivor Series 1990. If Zane, Jake & Kevin were lesser comedians they would make far more jokes about this PPV "laying an egg" but instead there is a lot to praise on this episode. Although Kevin still isn't moved to have more pro wrestling in life even after watching Mr. Perfect bump his ass off. To be fair Kevin is still pretty scared from his last episode were we made him watch WCW New Blood Rising. Jake was super excited to watch Survivor Series 1990 because this is the PPV that he bugged his parents to buy and when they refused in rebellion he watch the PPV preview channel for 5 hours straight in the living room on Thanksgiving Day. “Surreal” is how first-year pro, Kevin Portmann describes his overall age group win at Ironman Couer d’Alene in 2016. I’ve heard this from many people who describe a moment in life where they realize a dream. I too have experienced moments unfold that I’ve envisioned for years and then find it hard to believe in their unveiling. I can’t help but wonder, is this because the part us of that has trouble believing we are capable or worthy of our dreams overshadows the part that always knows any dream is ours to accomplish? Is self-doubt really that strong or is it that we’re just less in touch with the part of us that remains unshakably strong and capable? I believe the root of it is due to the world in which we are conditioned to believe that we are in a constant state of lack. New car, new home, new clothes, a better job, more money, stronger, leaner and faster. We are constantly barraged with messages that we need to do more, have more and be more. Although Kevin shares a bit about his struggle in believing in himself he shows us all that we can still take leaps of faith to follow our dreams. Clinching his pro card in 2016 Kevin is moving full force into his passion of racing triathlon as his career. And with Mariesa, his new bride, by his side, we fully believe that anything is possible for this hungry athlete. The two of them, in partnership, are navigating the triathlon circuit as new kids on the block. Finding their way, making mistakes and learning for the future. We chat about the importance of Marissa’s role in supporting Kev’s dreams and the difficulties that go along with being his good cop and bad cop. We take the trip along Kevin’s triathlon life starting with his first race in upstate New York where, despite crashing on the bike, left him eager for more. This hunger has led him to the finish lines of countless triathlons including three Ironmans in 11 weeks, two World Championship qualifications and invitation into the elite club of professional racing. Kevin dispels the myth that the life of a professional triathlete is all glamor and he reveals for the first time a goal that he’s never talked about before to others. We’re grateful to have such a talented athlete for you guys today and look forward to supporting his career and cheering him on. Thanks so much for tuning into the show each week.
