Synopsis- HUD in crisis- The Department of Housing and Urban Development has seen its staff slashed by 70% since Donald Trump took office, with civil rights cases being abandoned and political appointees allegedly overriding legal findings to allow discrimination. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donateDescription: About 750,000 people are on unpaid leave as the U.S. government shutdown continues —  but some of the most caring parts of the government's work have been shut down for months. Take the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for example. This is one of the only free resources available to Americans facing housing discrimination, but in a shocking complaint letter submitted to Senator Elizabeth Warren on September 22, 2025, civil rights attorneys Palmer Heenan, Paul Osadebe and two other whistleblowers describe an agency in crisis. Staff has been slashed by 70% since Donald Trump took office, civil rights cases have been abandoned, and political appointees are allegedly overriding legal findings to allow discrimination. Every layoff and budget cut by the Trump administration, both within HUD and across federal agencies, is part of a larger plan to create chaos, end civil rights protections, legalize segregation and exert unitary executive power. Heenan and Osadebe, members of the Federal Unionists Network (FUN), are calling on federal employees to uphold their oath to constitution and protect Americans. And they've paid the price: *both Heenan and Osadebe were fired by HUD in what has been called a "stunning act of illegal retaliation.” In this conversation, the two share their story, what it means for civil rights and how unions can fight for government accountability.“No one is asking for a leg up or an extra hand or whatever the case might be. We're just asking to get rid of discrimination. And so I hope the future will tell the story of people doing just that, coming together, going to Congress and saying, ‘These are our rights. You passed them into law decades ago. Fight for the rights that we have now.'” - Palmer Heenan“The thing that will actually get us through this is solidarity, recognizing what potential power we have as federal workers . . . [The administration wants] to create fear, which leads to silence, which lets things be dismantled without anyone standing up and fighting and saying, ‘This is illegal, this is wrong and this is harming people.' It's up to federal workers, the ones in the building, to actually do that.” - Paul OsadebeGuests:• Palmer Heenan: Attorney, HUD Whistleblower; Member, AFGE 476• Paul Osadebe: Attorney, HUD Whistleblower; Steward, AFGE 476 Watch the special report on YouTube; PBS World Channel Sundays 11:30am ET, and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). In today's episode from: President-elect Trump has been unclear about his position on union regulation, but very clear on an immigration crackdown. CEOs should plan to have their ducks in a row on documentation and visas. The best way to get ahead of strikes is to solve problems before they snowball. That means listening to employees sooner in the process. Strategic planning should center on the key question: what beliefs do I want employees to have about my organization? That vision should be specific, but adaptable. This week, we're analyzing how the upcoming Trump administration may affect National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) policies and enforcement priorities promoting union activity, recent court decisions on union protections, and high-profile strikes and evolving worker demands. NLRB Limits Employer Statements on Union Impact The Biden administration and the NLRB have been aggressive in pursuing policies and enforcement priorities that promote activity. Just last week, in a case involving Starbucks, the NLRB overturned a 40-year precedent to restrict employers' ability to describe the consequences of unionization to employees. The incoming administration can make some immediate changes here, such as replacing the NLRB General Counsel, but replacing board members takes more time, and other factors beyond executive policy impact the organizing environment.  Courts Limit and Expand Protections The courts have both limited and expanded protections for union organizing. For example, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit revived a pilot union lawsuit for retaliation against union activity based on recent U.S. Supreme Court precedent. On the other hand, several  cases challenging the way NLRB members are appointed are working their way through the courts, setting up the possibility that President Trump could have a more immediate policy impact. Boeing Strike Highlights New Union Demands High-profile strikes and work stoppages could also impact future union activity, such as the recent Boeing strike. These labor actions could continue during the new administration as workers push for more benefits and protections. This year, several large unions withheld their endorsements for a presidential candidate – a move that upset Democrats, because the majority of unions have always endorsed Democratic candidates. This was reflective of a shift that's been happening since the 2016 election, with more and more union members moving to the right. This division was on display when labor reporter Lauren Kaori Gurley visited the Ford auto plant in Wayne, Michigan, a factory in a critical swing state. Workers told her that they listen to MSNBC and Joe Rogan while they work and wear shirts in support of former president Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Some said they were still undecided. Host Martine Powers spoke with Lauren about why this shift to the right has happened and what workers at the auto plant told her about how they're deciding whom to vote for.Today's show was produced by Sabby Robinson, with help from Emma Talkoff. It was the former president's first event since the assassination attempt on him Sunday afternoon. 3:15pm- According to internal polling, members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters heavily favor Donald Trump over Kamala Harris—58% to 36%. On Wednesday, union leadership announced they would not be endorsing either candidate. It's the first time the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has opted out of endorsing a presidential candidate since 1996. In 2020, they supported Joe Biden—and have historically endorsed Democrats. 3:20pm- While speaking in Flint, Michigan on Tuesday night, Donald Trump vowed to bring automotive manufacturing back to the United States. During the event, one Michigan automaker hilariously told the former president he had been to a Trump rally before and that he didn't leave early, and no one fell asleep—refuting baseless claims made by Kamala Harris during last week's debate. 3:30pm- Doug Collins—Former U.S. Congressman and Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee—joins The Rich Zeoli Show and reacts to news that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will refuse to endorse a presidential candidate. Plus, Collins says he doesn't trust Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to protect the U.S. Southern border or former president Donald Trump—particularly after two assassination attempts in roughly two months. He notes that the Biden Administration should have fired Mayorkas long ago. Collins now serves as a Senior Advisor for the America First Policy Institute (AFPI). You can learn more about AFPI here: https://americafirstpolicy.com/about 3:50pm- Brand New Polling Data: One new poll from Gallup indicates Donald Trump has an advantage over Kamala Harris in favorability—46% to 44%. He also has an edge on favorability with Independent voters specifically, 44% to 34%. However, a new Quinnipiac poll shows Harris is beating Trump 51% to 46% in Pennsylvania—though, it seems to be an outlier. 4:05pm- Fed Cuts Interest Rates by Half a Percentage Point. Nick Timiraos of The Wall Street Journal writes: “The Federal Reserve voted to lower interest rates by a half percentage point, opting for a bolder start in making its first reduction since 2020. The long-anticipated pivot followed an all-out fight against inflation the central bank launched two years ago. Eleven of 12 Fed voters backed the cut, which will bring the benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 4.75% and 5%. Quarterly projections released Wednesday showed a narrow majority of officials penciled in cuts that would lower rates by at least a quarter point each at meetings in November and December.” You can read the full article here: https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-cuts-rates-by-half-percentage-point-03566d82 4:20pm- While speaking to the press after announcing a 0.50% interest rate cut, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said: “The U.S. economy is in a good place and our decision today is designed to keep it there.” Though, he stopped short of saying the Fed was ready to declare victory over inflation. 4:30pm- Dr. EJ Antoni—Research Fellow in The Heritage Foundation's Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget—joins The Rich Zeoli Show and reacts to the Federal Reserve slashing interest rates right before the presidential election. Was it done for political reasons? And will it have an impact on the 2024 election? 4:40pm- The ladies of The View have suggested Brittany Mahomes is racist for expressing support for Donald Trump. Early one morning, Manhattan was abuzz with excitement as Donald Trump, the promising GOP nominee, visited a bustling construction site. A powerful chorus of 'USA' and 'We want Trump' echoed through the air, primarily from the throats of the local chapter of the Steamfitters union. Waving to the crowd, Trump relished in the opportunity to engage with this powerhouse of union workers and the diverse supporters present there. Firm handshakes and candid poses for pictures marked his connection with everyday Americans; he was one of them, standing alongside them. All the hustle and bustle reached its peak when Trump addressed the awaiting media, shedding light on a significant Supreme Court case of the day around the topic of presidential immunity linked with the 2020 election controversy. 'This case is monumental in scope,' Trump offered impassioned insight during the 6:30 AM event. He presented a compelling argument - 'A president must enjoy immunity, lest the position be rendered a mere ceremonial role. Without immunity, presidential authority is hollow.' Trump's words resonated with the crowd, his conviction seemingly echoed by the stoic masons and steamfitters gathered around him. Trump's vibrant energy stimulated the industrious New Yorkers who've literally built the city's skyline. Darren Gould, a senior general foreman carpenter, voiced his support for Trump, pointing out that the union community in NY has steadily been siding with Trump. 'Trump's reception was resoundingly positive. It's now clear that unions are standing strong with Trump.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Lainey Newman, research assistant at Harvard Law School, to discuss her recent book Rust Belt Union Blues: Why Working-Class Voters Are Turning Away from the Democratic Party, co-authored with Theda Skocpol. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's bombing of the Palestinians taking refuge in Rafah, Biden and Trump's varying support for war, the election to fill George Santos' seat, the House GOP goes after Mayorkas… again, Pakistani election results wrap up, and Matt Gaetz's ethics hearings continue, also touching on Bibi Netanyahu's recent appearance on Fox News to touch on Israel's ongoing war against “barbarism” and to save “civilization.” Lainey Newman then joins, diving right into her research methods compiling and analyzing archival, interview, and ethnographic data exploring the political evolution of the Rust Belt's “union-man” archetype – also touching connection to the region. Next, Newman dives into her exploration of the influence of unions as third places and integral parts of community infrastructure in the Rust Belt, tackling the role they played throughout much of the 20th Century, playing host to community events, local organizing, religious affairs, as well as disseminating important news and political developments, alongside its role as a collective bargaining unit. Moving forward, Lainey walks Sam and Emma through the disappearance of this third-place over the second half of the century, with the collapse of steel regulation and rise of neoliberalism obliterating the union jobs and general population of the Rust Belt, and thus killing the major progressive counterweight to conservative community institutions and third places. After tackling the role of unions in bolstering race relations, and the role the Democratic Party played in the downfall of unionism, Newman wraps up with a quick assessment of union politics heading into the 2024 election. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the mass ongoing repression of Palestinian sympathies in Israel, Andrew from Chicago explores the future of housing reform in Chicago and beyond, and RFK gets inter-Kennedy pushback over the use of his family's pictures in a Super Bowl ad. Ehab from Tucson parses through the difficult questions of voting amid Biden's support for Israel's genocide – alongside the likelihood of any institutional awareness – Sarah from Chicago explores the influence of Israel's occupation of Palestine on Islamophobia in the US, and Donald Trump flexes on those parasitic NATO allies we have.
