Erin Whalen, founder of Compassionate Coaching, is working to help end of life and grief professionals love their work again. Using her unique gifts, Erin and the Compassionate Coaching theater troop employ “playback theater” to develop engaging programming that centers around giving and receiving empathy. They work with end of life teams to mitigate burnout, enabling the teams to continue providing care for those who are dying. Erin understands grief, loss, and the importance of caring for ourselves as we care for others. Erin lived her whole life in a state of anticipatory grief for the loss of her older sister, Gina. Gina was born with severe cerebral palsy, and died in 2016. Grief milestones are very familiar to Erin. Now she uses her work at Compassionate Coaching to support those who work to care for the dying. You can connect with Compassionate Coaching at compassionatecoaching.org. We're hosting a live workshop on storytelling, and you're invited! But before I dive into the details, let's talk about why storytelling is so important.Throughout history, the most influential figures weren't the strongest or the smartest…they were the best storytellers. Think about it. Whether in religion, politics, or culture, the power of narrative shapes our world. Disney, for instance, wields immense influence through its stories. Now, storytelling has played a crucial role in my business and personal growth journey too as well. Because it's really not just about the tales we share with others…it's also about the stories we tell ourselves. LEAVE A REVIEW if you liked this episode!! Hello to you listening in Davos, Switzerland!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I was preparing a storytelling workshop series for professional women who wanted to craft their origin story when I came across a scrap of paper with these lines:    “No life, however charmed, is un-visited by searing disappointment, numbing grief, chilling betrayal, dull routine, crushing defeat, or exasperating detail. And there is a great restorative dignity and holy self-empowerment in playing to the best of one's ability the hand one is dealt, however unwinning it may seem.”[William Sebrans]It's the perfect workshop opening. Why? Because these words call on us story makers, shapers, keepers, and tellers to face the rough stuff, heels dragging in the dirt, kicking and fighting along the way for no other reason than to restore our holy selves by playing the hand we've been dealt. It's the way of the world.Story Prompt: As your stories grow you, slowly revealing their secrets, how are you playing the wretched and noble hand you've been dealt? Write that story!Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Doch was kommt danach? Anschließend lernst du in zwei weiteren Webinaren (Termine: 27. Januar 2023 & 13.

Okay so a bit of self indulgence for you in this episode. I was invited by a previous guest and fan of the podcast, Rupert Honeywood of Business Growth Bureau to appear on his weekly live stream titled ‘Look Forward Thursdays'. This is my first speaking event since the start of the pandemic, so I said yes of course. Another opportunity to talk about my current passion, storytelling. We came up with a jazzy title ‘Your brain is wired for stories and how to implement this in your business'. We discussed the following 5 topics.1. How storytelling affects your brain 2. Research on the use of visuals 3. The Ebbinghaus forgetting curve 4. How you experience the Hero's Journey 5. How to implement this in your business from tomorrowNow of course we discuss some visuals that I shared, which you can't see on an audio podcast but if you head over to the show notes you will be able to see them all there for downloading. How do you put your message out there and truly make an impact? And how do you remain relevant even after many years? Storytelling has its way of keeping people hooked in and getting entertained while learning because the way we remember and learn things is the way we communicate it. And storytelling more than does the part. And for the most part, it is about writing and writing really well.  John Romaniello is an author, angel investor, media personality, and consultant who helps entrepreneurs improve communication skills and increase revenue through writing. Well-known across multiple industries, Romaniello has written hundreds of articles covering topics from business and marketing to fitness and self-development and is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Engineering the Alpha (HarperOne 2013). In 2015, Romaniello founded Wellspring Media, a consulting company focused on helping increase income and influence through effective branding and storytelling. Romaniello currently serves as an advisor to nearly a dozen companies, freelances as a ghostwriter and copy-doctor, and offers services as a writing mentor and consultant helping content creators become better writers.  In this episode, John, the authority that he is, shares value bombs about branding and marketing. Find out how he articulated so well the need to identify your customer avatar so you can narrow down your content just for them, and everything you write speaks only to them, thereby bringing in the right people. And when you talk of avatar, don't forget about geography that comes with your avatar. Once you leave that out, your message won't be as valuable to those you aim it for.  Videos or writing? John says that videos are limited in a lot of ways what writing is not. Here you will find the reasons why. What with storytelling? Listen to it as he lengthily discusses it. And while it's true that Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok are drivers for our businesses, it could never amount to what your site and what is written there do for ranking in Google. So much stuff to learn of what he said about this. While you do well at what you do now, there will come a time that you need to pivot. How to toe the line on this without you getting caught in what he termed as pivot purgatory? Let John takes charge. “Storytelling, particularly through writing allows you to consistently bond with people.”  - John Romaniello What you will learn from this episode: 01:51 - Why the need to define your customer avatar. John emphasized how zeroing in on who you really want to work with gives you the filter through which you present your content and frame your presentation. 09:56 - Not factoring in geography in defining your customer avatar is a big mistake. John tells us why it is an important consideration. 13:18 - Stories have a way of keeping people in what many traditional marketing does in pushing people out. Learn about what power storytelling play in marketing. 20:06 - "A closed door can be reopened, but a burnt bridge is ash forever." Why you should not take things personally. 25:30 - Video is limited in a lot of ways that writing is not. John shares his views on the value of writing and writing well. 34:19 - People are into the Facebook bubble, the Instagram bubble that they forget about Google. John reminds us that, though Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok are great drivers for our business, nothing beats putting content on your site and he explains the reason why. 39:35 - How to pivot without getting caught in pivot purgatory? 51:55 - A Storytelling Workshop is happening on May 09, 2020. Seth Godin has said that data without a narrative is really just noise. We, as humans, simply aren't programmed to process data. Instead, we relate and react to stories. We need not look any further the current COVID-19 outbreak for a prime example of that. The data suggests that the face masks that we're all wearing will not prevent you catching the virus. Yet still, we insist on wearing them. Why? Because the narrative is stronger and more compelling than the data. BTW - Seth is running a Storytelling Workshop. Welcome to the 2019 NEXT Conference Series. Recorded live in Chicago, this series is bringing interviews straight to you from exhibitors and speakers at this year’s event. In this interview, host Jamin Brazil interviews Brianna Sylver, president of Sylver Consulting. Find Brianna Online: LinkedIn Website: https://www.sylverconsulting.com [00:02] We are live at the NEXT Conference.  Here’s an interview I was able to pull off with Brianna Sylver with Sylver Consulting.  Enjoy. [00:11]    Congratulations on a great talk because at lunch I had a table of...  I was sitting at a table of six other people, me and… seven. I asked them their favorite moment of the day, and they all unanimously agreed that it was the Storytelling Workshop.     [00:25] Oh, that’s fantastic to hear.   [00:27] Yeah, swear to God.  Yeah, swear to God. Anyway, and then they talked about it for a good five to ten minutes afterwards.  It definitely hit a chord. Is that something you’re seeing in the space? Like, we need better storytelling.   [00:40] Definitely, I think we need better storytelling.  And I think... part of the reason why this talk exists is because I feel like a lot of the stuff that you hear about storytelling today is like it’s sort of very 10,000-foot surface level as far as how to do it.  And this particular framework really gets into the nitty-gritty as far as how to structure a story and what is the purpose and why you’re telling the story. Who are you telling the story to? How do you connect with them?  How do you communicate? So it goes through all the of four steps associated with that. But it makes me super happy to hear that because you know sometimes you’re talking and you’re like...     [01:18]  What’s happening? [01:19] Yeah, like are people resonating with this?  Are they not resonating? So I wasn’t quite sure.  It’s pure delight right now.   [01:25]       Yeah, yeah, seriously that’s absolutely the truth too.  Anyway, it was good; it was really good, really valuable.  Another thing that I think you’ll find interesting is... So, I’ve done about 140 episodes, which is to say I’ve talked a lot.  I always ask, “What is your biggest problem?” in a full interview. Inevitably – I would say 7 out of 10 times – storytelling is the big problem, like a lack of storytelling inside of the organization, which then connects... effects change or empowers the insight or extends the power of the insight to effect change.  Really, the quality of the story as opposed to the degree of quality of the research, which is a little bit counterintuitive, is in a lot of ways the missing ingredient from a brand point of view.           [02:25] I would 100% agree.  it’s interesting because I came to the market research industry by way of design.  So, I’m actually a graphic designer initially, and then I have a master’s degree in Human Centered Communication Design and Design Strategy.  And part of the value of design is sort of taking a human-centered design approach is in your ability to visualize the vision, and a big piece of that is storytelling.  And so, that’s always been just sort of my framework for how I approach my work. And so, when I started to bring in more of the market research side, which I did purposely because I think sometimes the insights gathering from a design perspective at least from a method and even frankly from a quality perspective sometimes can be a little lacking or flat...  And so, I found that the market research side of the equation really helped to create robustness that was needed truly I think to make really solid decisions. But now bringing in these two pieces of like, I would say that the market research is kind of the “What,” and the design is the possibilities for what that could mean.   [03:38] Oh, interesting. [03:38]  And then the other aspect of our business brings a strategy and that’s kind of like,

Lancaster Story Slam podcast

Welcome to the Lancaster Story Slam podcast! Even though our February Story Slam was two weeks after Valentine’s Day, we decided to try the theme of “First Crush” and wow! Did we get crushed! We heard some hilarious and some heartbreaking stories about first loves - all the stories were excellent - the judging was really close - and we ended up with a tie! Christian Carrion and Marcus Grimm both walked away with prized pint glasses and both were invited back to our November Grand Slam! Christian Carrion was a first time storyteller. It’s so exciting when a first-timer gets up on stage and crushes it! Congratulations Chris! If you think you want to tell a story on stage, but want some guidance, check out our Storytelling Workshop! In this one night session we’ll cover basic story structure, creative language, and more. It’s a great way to build your confidence before taking to the mic. We only do this workshop once a year, and this year the date is April 18th.  Our co-winner for the First Crush Story Slam was Marcus Grimm. Marcus discussed his first television crush and how she kept resurfacing in his life.   Our final storyteller is our dear friend Kevin Beerman. Friends of Kevin know this remarkable and heartwarming story, so it was great to hear him tell this onstage. Here’s Kevin.   We loved this story. Although Kevin is a first-time storyteller, his wife Donna Talarico has told stories often at Lancaster Story Slam. Together, they organize Hippocamp - a Creative Nonfiction Writers Conference, which has brought in some of today’s greatest authors. Hippocamp 2018 will take place the weekend of August 24th. Google hippocamp 2018 to learn more! If you have been a podcast listener, but haven’t made it to one of our live events, you should make plans to come out to Tellus360 in 2018! Our 2018 dates and themes are all posted on our website.  If you enjoyed the podcast, we’d love it if you you would leave a rating and review on iTunes, or let your friends know they can listen to Lancaster folks telling true tales each month. Thanks for listening!

Due to the snowstorm, our March West Chester Story Slam had to be postponed for two days, but it was worth the wait. Thanks to everyone who came out for the Thursday night event. Our theme was Working Hard and we ended the night with a tie. First up, co-winner Cindy Heffron tells about how her work has been difficult at times, but also rewarding.  Next up is our co-winner Robin Renn. Robin had told her first story last month, and then returned in March for “Working Hard.”  Our final story is from frequent storyteller Arianna Scavetti. Our April Story Slam is themed Rebellion. If you are interested in attending one of our Story Slams live, here are some tips. West Chester Story Slam is held on the second Tuesday of the month. Seats do sell out so you want to plan ahead. All the info you need can be found at wcstoryslam.com. And don’t forget to check out our Storytelling Workshop at the end of April.   Well, that’s our podcast for this month! If you are a fan of the West Chester Story Slam podcast - please let your friends know, or write a review on iTunes.

The 2017 Lancaster Story Slam season is in full swing. Our theme for February was “Love and Hate,” and we heard all different takes on the subject. It was quite a turnout too as people celebrated Mardi Gras - a festive night for sure! When it was over, Beth Horenkamp was declared the winning storyteller. Beth has taken to the stage several times over the past two years.  Beth will be returning to the Grand Slam this November. She was also a grand slam competitor last season! Do you have a story you want to tell on stage? Have you been secretly thinking you want to tell a story but would like a boost of confidence? We’re holding our Storytelling Workshop on Wednesday night, April 5th at Tellus 360. Our two-hour class will help you think through how to draft your story and provide tips on telling your story live on stage. Learn more on the website, Lancaster Story Slam on the Workshops page. Register to secure your spot. Laura Heller told about how one slip changed her whole international experience.  Here’s a totally different take on the theme of Love and Hate. Linda Silberman was a first-time storyteller, and we can say we are glad she is back her in Pennsylvania.  Our final storyteller is my co-producer, Jim Breslin. He recalls a controversial celebrity that he worked with years ago. Lancaster Story Slam is always held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Tellus360. Our events start at 8pm, but we recommend arriving early to grab a pint and food at the front bar. You can check out all the details, the rules, and the the themes for the year at our website - LancasterStorySlam.com. If you enjoyed the podcast, we’d love it if you you would leave a rating and review on iTunes, or let your friends know they can listen to Lancaster folks telling true tales each month.

Storytelling is gaining momentum.  Open-mic nights are the hot ticket in Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit and New York with people lining up two hours before show time to hear storytellers tell stories. Let's look at the reasons why: “Storytelling is human connection at its most primal form,” says Catherine Burns, artistic director for the storytelling broadcast, The Moth, winner of the 2010 Peabody Award for excellence in electronic media. “In the midst of this technological revolution, it's not surprising to me that people are looking to return to their roots. We want more than a status update about a breakfast cereal or someone's child's potty-training escapades. We crave more than a ‘like' on Facebook or a retweeted Tweet. Storytelling is to entertainment as the slow food movement is to dining – it's fresh and it's local.” Researchers at Princeton University in 2010 discovered that storytellers cause the brains of their listeners to operate in synch with their own. Greg J. Stephens, Lauren J. Silbert and Uri Hasson used functional magnetic resonance imaging to reveal how the same brain areas in the storyteller and the listener were stimulated at precisely the same points in the story. The biological mechanism that enables vicarious experience was only recently discovered. Groups of specialized neurons called “mirror neurons” exist opposite each other in the left and right hemispheres of the brain, allowing us to vicariously participate in what someone else is experiencing. These neurons enable human empathy, allowing us to tune in to each others' feelings. In effect, mirror neurons allow you to live inside the minds of others. This is why hearing stories of adventure is almost as exciting as having the adventure yourself. You don't take books and movies with you; they take you with them. When you're watching sports, a piece of you is in that game.   Salespeople, evangelists and speechwriters have long known that a good story can cause the listener to see and feel what the storyteller is seeing and feeling, thereby empowering the storyteller to transfer ideas and emotions intact.   Every good story provides a point of entry – a portal – that allows the listener to join in the adventure.   Secrets to Storytelling in Advertising will be the topic of http://www.rhw.com/sign-up-for-wizard-of-ads-live/?wlfrom=%2Fwizard-of-ads-live%2F (our monthly webinar) next Monday, November 14, and a special Storytelling Workshop will soon be announced at Wizard Academy.   Questions?
