Event Planners vs Event Designers vs Event Decorators - Episode 136

What is the difference between an event planner, an event designer, and an event decorator? In this episode, May Silvers explores the distinction between these roles to clear up common misconceptions and guide newcomers in the event industry towards finding their niche.   May explains that while event planners may have the skills to perform the roles of both designer and decorator, designers and decorators typically do not take on planning. Planners are the strategists who manage everything behind the scenes, overseeing budgets, schedules, and vendor relations to ensure every aspect meets the client's vision and objectives.   In contrast, event designers are the creatives focused solely on the event's aesthetics, crafting the look and feel through their choice of colors, textures, and design concepts. They transform spaces to create the desired ambiance but generally don't manage logistical or operational aspects.   Decorators are the hands-on team members who bring a designer's vision to life. They handle the physical setup, arranging decorations and ensuring every detail matches the theme.   May emphasizes the importance of understanding these differences to better identify and define one's career path within the event industry. She encourages her listeners to try and experiment with different roles to truly discover what they love doing before specializing.   Quotes • “The event planner can be an event designer and an event decorator, but an event decorator and an event designer cannot be an event planner because the skill set is very different. (03:30 | May Silvers)  • “So the client tells me what they're looking for, and then I start thinking how I want the event to look like in terms of the decor elements. I start designing based on the color, the theme, the texture, the type of furniture I want to use, the floral centerpiece—the type of flowers, the vase, and the placement—where I should be putting it in the room. Then, when I'm designing it, I already have an idea which of my vendors can fulfill this order, this event.” (08:33 | May Silvers)  • “I don't want to say that the hierarchy is the event planner and then the designer and then the decorator. No, we all have our own space. But if you look at it on paper, that's how it looks. The event planner will do everything in terms of strategy, in terms of planning. And they can even design if they want to.” (17:54 | May Silvers) • “If you're joining the events field and you're thinking, ‘I don't know what I want to do.' Ask yourself. You won't know until you do it, until you try it.” (19:01 | May Silvers) • “If you don't know what type of events you want to do, expose yourself to all of it. Then narrow down. Take out those that you don't like to do until your field becomes narrower or your niche becomes clearer.” (21:22 | May Silvers)    Links If you like my podcast, you will LOVE what I share on my instagram. In the realm of ultra-luxury event design, the pressure to exceed the client's high expectations comes with the territory. Creatively speaking, it's hard to say no to the vision, and that requires us to constantly push the boundaries of what's possible. The work of designers is incredibly detailed and precise, and that can be a heavy energy expenditure to whoever's at the helm of that vision.   The designer's job is to push, cultivate and curate everyone around them to elevate to the level of that vision. That's something Rishi Patel does extremely well.   How do you create flexibility in a process that often requires set timelines and plans? How do you craft designs where everything serves a purpose instead of just stuffing rooms with details?   In this episode, the CEO and CCO of HMR Designs joins us to share how he went from finance to event design, and the process behind the work he delivers.   Guest Bio Rishi Patel is the CEO and CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER of HMR Designs. Named one of the top Wedding and Event Designers in the world by Harper's Bazaar, VOGUE, Brides and Martha Stewart Weddings, along with being recognized as Top 40 under 40, Rishi remains one of the most highly coveted event designers among discerning clientele and notable figures alike. An advocate for fully transformative design, he specializes in celebrations of all kinds – all while adhering to the firm belief that service and guest experience are the cornerstone to great events and the definition of true luxury. From galas, to weddings, to milestone celebrations, any event is in his wheelhouse. An educational background in Finance and an MBA from Indiana University has afforded him the ability to lead the HMR team from a fiscal perspective – though it's his artistic passion that allows him to design the fantastical events he is known for. As much of a creative visionary as an astute business leader, Rishi's insistence on unconventionality has continuously transformed the landscape of event design while granting him the honor of designing events for some of the most notable figures, families and organizations in the world.   A loyal Chicago native and avid traveler, Rishi regularly seeks inspiration from whatever cultural landscape he can find himself in. The destination event and wedding world has allowed Rishi and the HMR team to embrace so many incredible regions and pockets of the world to create spectacular events. Regardless of the marvelous adventures in design that await him, Rishi will always consider himself an artist at heart. For more information, head to https://hmrdesigns.com/.

Named one of Harper’s Bazaar’s 2020 Top Wedding & Event Designers in the World,  the talented, charming treasure trove of knowledge and skill, Jen Stone, started out as an innovative entrepreneur with a thriving floral business on New York’s upscale Upper West Side. Discovered by two luminaries in the event industry, Tinker Boe of “Mood Food” and the incomparable event planner Marcy Blum, Jen (a painter and protegée of the brilliant Robert Isabell) began a journey that led her to become one of the most sought-after names in “the art of the party.” Pictured above with her current, long-time artistic partner and brother-in-law, Marco Olmi,  the innovative co-owner of StoneKelly (which began with her original partner, Don Kelly), I found her effusive, expressive way of speaking to be a virtual education about flowers, caterers, lighting, venues and all the artistic touches that make an event unforgettable. Our conversation was so compelling, Jen Stone’s podcast is the first to become a two-parter. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did…and stay tuned for Part 2! As always, stay safe and stay strong. In a truly refreshing conversation with Kleinfeld Bridal’s Director of Marketing & Public Relations, Jennette Kruszka, you’ll meet an extraordinary woman. One with an uncompromising pride and loyalty to her company and its owners, Mara Urshel and Ronnie Rothstein, who she considers her “second parents” as well as devoted mentors. What I found amazing about Jennette is that working at Kleinfeld has been her sole employer. Starting as a 17-year old high school student Customer Service Rep, straight through college as a marketing major, she worked at the original Brooklyn location three days a week. Her final college paper was the reason why she deserved a full-time position at her beloved Kleinfeld. She got it, and since then, has never looked back. Jennette says: “It’s been twenty wonderful years and I’m looking forward to the two decades.” I think this is a wonderful introduction to fans of TLC’s “Say Yes To The Dress” and brides who’ve never had the true Kleinfeld Bridal Experience. Please stay safe, and enjoy. All my best, Doug

My erudite guest for Episode 92 is Seth Stern, the owner of Something Different Party Rental.  Extraordinarily well-spoken, he explains the intricacies of the often-overlooked “Party Rental” side of our $1.3 trillion event industry.  One of the most unusual parts of what this side of the industry does is found in its “invisible” nature — providing tabletop to full kitchens and everything in between. Our conversation traveled from his enormous warehouse and fleet of trucks in Paterson, New Jersey to his home on the North Shore of Long Island, his long-time love of The Grateful Dead and so much more. Please join us for a completely entertaining and compelling glimpse into something completely different with the remarkable Seth Stern. As always, stay safe. All my best, Doug

For Episode 85 I got the unique opportunity to sit down with Steve Frost, President & Managing Partner of Stamford Tent & Event Services, to take s seriously deep dive into the world of tents, outdoor weddings and/or corporate events. We discuss the concept behind the idea of enjoying an elegant wedding outdoors under the stars, in a tent, as an alternative to more traditional venues, like a hotel, or synagogue.  I learned what a “sub-floor” is, and why it’s the most expensive part of constructing a tent. I learned the difference between a “sailcloth” and a “frame tent” is and most importantly, how incredibly labor intensive constructing a tent actually is. And more than I ever thought possible in one forty minute conversation. I submit that this episode be “required listening” for anyone considering a tent wedding. And the importance of the mindset Bill brings to every event as a “people whisperer” with his truly joyful attitude. Read moreEp. 61: Bill Coyne

For episode 60, I was joined by one of the most gregarious, open-hearted and passionate industry influencers I’ve ever met.  As the Business Development Mgr at Party Rental Ltd., Jim McManus is often considered the face of the company, which was actually founded by Michael and Sunny Halperin back in 1972. Jim is the ultimate podcast guest — a totally engaging, knowledgeable and colorful raconteur who knows absolutely everyone in the hospitality industry. And throughout our conversation, with a great deal of humor and animation, this self-described “dot connector” does a wild imitation of Wolfgang Puck, explores the meaning of “visions” and the significance of being “one of us,” the importance of strategic partnerships, the mystery of “the Bite” among the world’s greatest chefs,  the pressure cooker,  intense and stressful nature of special events and hospitality as well as the emotional details of weddings — which are, in the end — simply all about the magic of two people in love. It’s nearly impossible to capture the true essence of a person in one ZOOM conversation, but when it comes to Jim’s ebullience, enthusiasm and pure love for what he does, you come pretty close. What’s more, you just can’t fake his revelations of  his thoroughly “authentic” self. Sit back and enjoy my podcast with the remarkable Jim McManus.  You’re in for a treat. Stay safe and strong, my friends. Fondly, -Doug

The recording of Episode 59 was a wonderfully uplifting Zoom adventure with the lovely, dynamic and deeply spiritual Andrea Freeman who came back to the podcast to explore a very timely subject and reveal an exciting and deeply meaningful part of herself.  So, if you only know Andrea Freeman as a talented and successful event planner get ready for a treat…and meet Andrea Freeman, Mindful Business Coach. Andrea reveals her lifelong “obsession” with mindfulness, which began when she “borrowed” her mother’s book by Andrew Weil at the tender age of thirteen. As she explains, she was always looking for ways we can all get more connected to ourselves. From her vision boards to her little cabin in Maine, her career teaching in Bedford Stuyvesant to her move to culinary school, her launch of Andrea Freeman Events to her move to Los Angeles with her husband,  Andrea discovered her own spirituality and clear purpose: mindfulness — whether it’s meditation, practicing TM, journaling, psychology or any other process of uncovering who you are…and the joy in every moment, as you follow your bliss rather than a want or desire. And, it’s led to her sharing her understanding of self-knowledge, intention, affirmation, energy and creativity to help others cultivate it for themselves as they build their businesses, with inspiration, clarity and confidence. Join us for an unforgettable podcast that will elevate and inspire you…

My compelling conversation with the delightful and endlessly upbeat Amy Marella, founder and owner of The Hidden Garden,  a hugely successful floral studio in Los Angeles, California, is fresh cut and at peak bloom, as it was recorded over Zoom just a few days ago. And honestly, it was a true joy. Amy is a spirited, imaginative, highly talented and passionate innovator who shares so much about her business and her life. From the importance of balancing motherhood and her career to the importance of “her team,” the  critical meaning of hydration, timing, temperature, geography to “the process” and so much more, Read moreEp. 58: Amy Marella

Meet Joy Locke, the charming, expert and dynamic Marketing & Business Development Manager at  ONTHEMARC Events, based in Stamford, CT. Our focus was to explore the intricate workings of off-premise catering, a subject we have not yet thoroughly covered on the podcast. Clearly, Joy loves her work. Our conversation was as fast-moving and passionate as Joy herself, as we covered a great deal of ground…from Joy’s roots in performance and culinary arts to our detail-packed deep dive into how her company is evolving during this unimaginable (but very real) collective pause in our lives. For Episode 56, I wanted to take a deep-dive into some of the many aspects of what actually goes into the planning of a wedding — from the engagement to honeymoon — from a highly reliable source. And so, it was a true pleasure to revisit one of my all-time most favorite bridal couples, Kevin and Jackie Nelson Donovan, pictured here at their June 2019 wedding. Although Kevin only introduces Jackie during our conversation, it’s a very sweet moment, so much like this beautiful couple themselves. And then the lovely, articulate and very Zen bride, Jackie Nelson Donovan, takes over…sharing so much of her personal experiences as a bride, from her childhood dreams of being married at the American Yacht Club, which was so important to her family to the most positive and productive mindset you can have while wedding planning. For Episode 55, I “virtually” sat down with the lovely Melisa Imberman, the founder and owner of “The Event of a Lifetime” in Chappaqua, New York. And as the podcast quickly reveals, the work of this energetic, innovative planner of bar mitzvahs and weddings truly lives up to her company’s promise — with highly personalized, custom-designed celebrations that are groundbreaking, original and filled with joy. Our conversation covers so much ground — from setting priorities to brainstorming with clients to develop themes and from there…logos, signage and taglines,  the transformative power of lighting to the subtle secret of the private Pinterest board, the highly inventive “dress swap”  to the moving candlelighting ceremony and deeply meaningful Mitzvah Project, which captures the spirit of the milestone and reflects the importance of giving back to the community. Find out what Melisa means when she describes a bar mitzvah as “a wedding on steroids.”   I know you’ll love this episode with the vivacious and highly talented Melisa Imberman. Allyson Joseph is the co-owner of the family-owned Los Angeles based wedding-industry giant, Bob Gail Events. Warm, funny, incredibly smart and gracious, she’s a remarkably accomplished young woman. Who sends hand-written thank you notes to vendors post-events? The same person who wrote her Masters thesis about the theoretical perspectives of the wedding and event industry, crowdsurfed at her own wedding and launched her career with an internship at Danny Meyer’s Union Square Cafe  before heading back to run the company business in L.A. Only the extraordinary Allyson Joseph. From tales of Clinton’s Inaugural Ball to installing a scaffold dance floor over a pool to spontaneous/”surprise” event planning, our conversation is bright, fast-paced, engaging and lively, filled with informative and entertaining stories of weddings she has produced from Southern California to Tuscany and points all over the globe…Her thoughtful, meaningful words ask and speak volumes when Allyson muses about the “motivation behind the spend,” or explains that, of course, “lighting is everything.” Allyson has a great deal of terrific advice for brides and grooms which you’ll hear in the episode ahead, but one of the best I’ve yet to hear is to “decide to enjoy yourself” at your own wedding. And, in that spirit, I invite you to simply enjoy the extraordinarily inventive, creative and inspiring Allyson Joseph on this episode 44 of the podcast. Best, -Doug

Andre is a renowned event planner and designer known for creating high caliber parties for his many high-profile clients.  On this episode of The Next Level, Andy and Andre discuss the wonderful nuggets of wisdom Mark Ingram provided in his interview. First off, Andre and Mark are colleagues and friends in the industry. Andy and Andre discuss some of the concepts Mark mentioned such as his belief in the art of dressmaking and dressing other people, the need for dressers at the event, and how each wedding gown should reflect the style and feel of the venue.  Boutique owners, brides, and bourgeoning bridal gown designers should all listen to his interview and our discussion to learn how Mark’s experience and tips shine in every aspect of the wedding day production. Show Highlights: [01:31] Since Andre’s own interview, on The Wedding Biz, he’s been honored by Biz Bash as one of the top 50 event designers in the US. [02:40] Andre and Andy chat about Mark Ingram, being a good friend of Andre’s.  [03:25] “Each gown is a work of art.” - Mark Ingram, Andre shares how fitting this quote is to describe Mark’s belief about the gowns he shows. [05:03] The pressure of finding “The gown” also invades the event as a whole because everything interconnects. [06:50] It is not an easy thing to dress people. Andre chats about the gift a person must have to dress others. [08:03] The style of the wedding is determined by the location, time of day, level of formality and this bleeds through into the style of the dress. [09:14] Andre loves the idea of having a dresser on site during the wedding to help with clothing mishaps. An amazing tip from an expert in the industry. [10:36] Most planners and designers will have an event kit or a tool bag with everything needed to fix little accidents.  [11:22] Don’t forget about the groom! [13:20] Mark made the point to embrace changes in technology and Andre completely agrees. Stay youthful and accept the younger generation’s knowledge. [14:56] Andre shares an insightful tip on not giving over all of your social channels to your staff. Take ownership of your brand and your social media voice. From his childhood in Alabama and education in Mississippi to his ultimate journey to New York, DeJuan Stroud’s path is one of the most fascinating and circuitous I’ve yet to encounter, as he has established himself as one of the industry’s most celebrated event designers, after more than a decade of working in  finance, first in New Orleans, and finally on Wall Street. With great entrepreneurial spirit, he followed his pure passion for flowers and entertaining at home and turned it into a thriving, blooming business. Staying true to his unique aesthetic, DeJuan is well-known for constantly evolving and redefining himself as he brought his wit, wisdom and singular vision to create some of New York’s most stylish events — from corporate to celebrity clients and Hollywood film premieres, all served up with his remarkable artistry and his generous philanthropy, which is a wonderful story in itself. Along the way, he wrote a spectacular book, “Designing Life’s Celebrations,” which translates his particular brand of magic for the most appreciative readers who wish to follow in his stunningly simple footsteps. Enjoy our  fast-paced and enlightening conversation that features DeJuan Stroud’s elegant voice,  with hints of a slight Southern lilt, and for his wonderful insights and stories. Best,-Doug
