Episode #353 Get ready for a magical journey as Torie Brown Hunt returns to The Disney Crush Podcast with a trip report like no other. With her daughter and 8 nieces along for the ride, some experiencing the wonder of Walt Disney World for the first time. Don't miss this enchanting episode.  www.thedisneycrush.com thedisneycrush@gmail.com www.patreon.com/thedisneycrush   Favorite park and why   Hadley: Magic Kingdom because the rides were the biggest and best and the most   Emily: I would say my favorite park was EPCOT although I think we all agreed that it was only fun because we had an Auntie that bought us all the good snacks and knew all the best spots. I also loved Animal Kingdom, I think it's kind of a sleeper hit and I can imagine if you're not an animal person you could probably take it or leave it. I genuinely couldn't believe they had real animals though. So cool! I think I like both of those because they are the least like Disneyland which I went to many times growing up. They felt like entirely new theme park experiences.    Alyse: If I had to pick a favorite park it would probably be Epcot because it surprised me the most and there was so much different stuff to see which was awesome.    Callie: My favorite park was definitely Hollywood studios because I loved all the rides there because they were exciting and at the end of the day it cooled down and was super nice and pretty sunset    Elynn: I can't decide between Epcot or Hollywood Studios I like Epcot because of all the things to see. I liked Hollywood for the ride and how pretty it was during sunset.   Addisen: Animal Kingdom- Felt the most balanced with big and small rides. I felt like we could get everything done and it wasn't as busy. More shaded and didn't feel rushed.   Leilani: My favorite park is Epcot because of the food and the immersive experience with all of the cultural aspects! I love that they have things from the specific countries and how they sell things from the actual places and not just all Disney themed things! Animal kingdom is a close second for me though!   Favorite Attraction   Hadley: Tron because it was really fast and fun   Emily: Well, one of my favorite rides at Disneyland is Rise of the Resistance but it is essentially the same at Disney World so I'm going to say Avatar Flight of Passage. There really is nothing quite like it, and it's incredibly immersive. I would recommend it to literally everyone I know. Even if you don't like the Avatar movies that almost doesn't matter, it's just a cool ride.    Elynn: Tower of terror   Addisen: Guardians of the Galaxy, gotta love the 80s music   Leilani: My favorite ride is flight of passage because it really feels like you're flying and the views it takes you on are so magical and I wish I could actually go there! I love the details of the breathing of the banshee, the water droplets when you go over the water, and the scents of flowers, grass, and water! It feels like you're really there!   Favorite food    Hadley: Chinese potstickers and egg rolls with soy sauce   Emily: I'm a Dole Whip girly. It's hands down the best thing at both Disney parks and I HAVE to get one any time I go. Other than that I think I liked the gyoza and egg rolls we go (don't remember where but I'm sure Torie knows). I watch those things pretty regularly in my day to day life but there is something about being exhausted and sweaty sitting on the floor eating them that made it magical.    Alyse: Best food were the potstickers in China or the chocolate crepe in France.    Callie: The best food was the food from the Sci-Fi restaurant and I got a American burger and fries and fried pickles    Elynn: The Dole Whip swirl float or the purple moose cake at Animal Kingdom    Addisen: Hazelnut crepes in France. I will be dreaming about that forever.   Leilani: This is a hard one because I am a foodie just like my mama, but the ratatouille galette was so good and the Texas toast brisket sandwich and the Mac and cheese at the Regal Eagle was unexpectedly amazing! The lemon sorbet from Italy was extra refreshing in the extreme heat though for sure.   What surprised you most   Hadley: How decorated everything was and that everything was perfectly made to match a theme   Emily: How NOT tired I was at the end of the trip. I woke up the day we were flying home and was like “I could do it again today”. I was also impressed with how eventually you just accept the heat and forget about it. I don't think anyone complained about how hot it was and we were always so busy that you could even really think about it. Cooling cloths and hand held fans were definitely our life savers though!    Alyse: What surprised me was how detailed everything was but especially the lines for rides. Compared to Disneyland everything was more interactive and interesting to look at. Also just the technology and engineering that takes place to make the parks happen.   Callie: The thing that surprised me the most was Epcot because I had no idea that it was going to be decorated to well and that made it fun to see   Elynn: I was surprised how much I enjoyed Epcot, I thought I wouldn't like it that much because I like thrill rides.   Addisen: Epcot, only park I haven't been to before. I haven't heard many people talk about it but I was so cool. Underrated   Leilani: The Nemo sea ride in Epcot surprised me the most because I was not expecting a whole entire aquarium after the ride! That was such a cool surprise and I had never seen a manatee in my life and they're a lot bigger and cuter than I would've expected haha   Rope drop or sleep in?   Hadley: Rope Drop   Emily: Rope drop 100%. I'm all here for it. That being said, I am a morning person, but it's SO MUCH cooler in the morning and you can get so many things done before the lines get crazy. It's absolutely worth it in the summer.    Alyse: #Ropedrop, sleep is for the weak    Callie: I think Rope dropping is better because it's cooler in the morning and you are able to get some of the longer line rides done early on  Elynn: Definitely rope drop.   Addisen: Rope drop. The cool morning makes all the difference.   Leilani: I know you're expecting me to say sleep in, but because of the extreme heat in July, rope dropping is the move. My body just hates waking up that early hahaha. But in December and may I'm sleeping in for sureeeeee   Most cherished memory:   Hadley: The third time riding tower of terror and pretending to control it   Emily: This has nothing to do with the parks, but I will always remember how easy it was to connect and relate to everyone, even after not seeing people for years. This was definitely different than seeing people at family reunions, we all just got to be completely ourselves and discover that we all are very much the same. Before we all left I said “I really don't think you could have this much fun on a trip without doing it with people you vibe with as much as we do”. I will always remember how close this made us.    Alyse: The evening at Hollywood studios and magic kingdom, re-riding tower of terror and Tron but also being able to see everything at night   Callie: The night at Hollywood studios and riding tower of terror 3 times    Elynn: Hanging out at night at Hollywood and Magic kingdom, riding Tower of Terror and Tron 3 times, and seeing the parks at night.   Addisen: Sitting down to eat or have snacks and just being able to talk with everyone.    Leilani: My favorite memory was all of us walking through the rain together any time it rained. It felt so good when it rained and I loved splashing in the puddles! Being able to talk to everyone and connect in a deeper level is for sure the best part of the trip. It was so much fun to be able to get to know everyone for who they are just as girls being girls     Alyse's Rankings:   Day one Triceratops spin - 4/10 3.5/10 Dinosaur (time travel) - 7/10 7.75/10 Expedition Everest - 9/10 9.2/10 Kali River Rapids - 5/10 5.25/10 Safari - 9/10 9.5/10 Flight of passage - 10/10 Navi River Journey - 8/10 It's Tough to be a bug - 6/10   Pandoran Juice - 7/10 Yak & Yeti Cafe yogurt parfait - 3/10   Day Two Soaring - 6/10 Guardians of the Galaxy - 10/10 Ratatouille - 5/10 Grand fiesta - 3/10 Imagination figment - 2/10 Finding Nemo - 4/10 Aquarium - slay/10 Living with the land - 3/10 put to sleep Frozen ever after - 7/10   France - Hazelnut chocolate crepe - 9/10 France bakery - 8/10 Japanese snacks - 7/10 Italy - gelato - 7/10 China - Potstickers eggs roll - 9/10 Canada - Maple popcorn 4/10   Day Three Mickey Minnie - 7/10 Slinky dog - 6/10 Toy Story Mania - 8/10 Swirling Saucers - 3/10 Tower of Terror - 9/10 Frozen sing along - 6/10 Rocking roller coaster - 8/10 Rise of resistance - 9/10 Star Tours - 5/10 Smugglers run - 7/10   Raspberry tart - 7/10 Churro - 8/10 Sci Fi theater - 7/10 Gelato - 9/10 Day Four Rides/shows Buzz - 6/10   Day Four Buzz - 6/10 People mover - 4/10 Tiana's Bayou Adventure - 9/10 Pirates of the Caribbean- 7/10 Tron - 9.5/10 Space mountain - 7.5/10 7 dwarfs - 7.5/10 Winnie the Pooh - 4/10 Barnstormer - 4/10 Jungle cruise - 8/10 Haunted mansion - 7/10   Starlight cafe - 7.5/10 Pizza egg rolls - 8/10

Whatever the case, Kali River Rapids at Disney's Animal Kingdom and Grizzly River Run at Disney California Adventure are among the best in the world. How many more similar ride systems are there? What is the best pastry company and their assorted choices? Will you feel the shame about our global destruction of nature by riding Kali? Will you agree with the land impact of Grizzly? Is that giant bear out front of the ride actually for sale? You'll find all of that and more in this episode. WDW: Kevin Visits ALL 4 Parks in 1 Day + Budgeting Tips for Your Disney Vacation - 003

Report the Magic

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 7, 2018 69:05

Today I chatted with Kevin from Debt Free Happens, who just happened to find himself in Orlando for FinCon.  As the good Disney opportunist would, he jumped at that chance and planned ONE day to visit all four parks. So many conventions and sports competitions are hosted in Orlando, and it's not always possible to combine those with a full Disney vacation. This doesn't mean you can't take advantage of the flight and proximity and sneak away to the parks...even if it's just for one day! Kevin also has a lot of really great budgeting tips from his day at Walt Disney World to share, so you are sure to find gold here to help you plan your next Disney vacation. The Plan: Four Disney Parks in One Day Trip Planning Details Resort: Rosen Shingle Creek First time to Walt Disney World? Yes for both Kevin and his wife, Erin Memory Maker: No (Decision was based on prioritizing time on rides.) Planning tools: Purchasing tickets - Disney's site; Disney Food Blog (specifically YouTube videos); Unlocking the Magic podcast Tickets: One day Park Hopper + Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party ticket Planning tips:  Whoever's best with maps in your party, have them study each park intensely and learn where the rides are so that you're not sitting there trying to figure it out when you're at any of these parks. The Tuesday before they went, they watched the wait times during the day on My Disney Experience. This gave an idea of what to expect on a Tuesday. The key is you can't watch a Saturday and prepare for a Tuesday. If you purchase anything and are staying on property, have your packages sent to your resort! This is completely complimentary. If you are staying off property, you can have them sent to the front of the park at no charge (or sent home for an additional fee) which is super helpful when you are trying to dash through all four parks in one day. Tips for packing your park bag for Disney World Kevin's tip for bringing bags to Disney World is that first of all, you absolutely need one, and second, avoid a bigger backpack (he recommends a smaller drawstring backpack).  They actually brought two and made sure one was waterproof, which was less than $10 on Amazon. The additional benefit of having a small drawstring bag is they easily fit in the pouches in ride vehicles.  This actually makes boarding and departing much quicker! What to pack: Ponchos - Kevin feels strongly about stretching your budget and not purchasing the more expensive version Disney offers. Dramamine Sunblock Hats (make sure to take them off for fast rides!) Snacks Extra socks Ziploc baggies How packing Dramamine saved the day First of all, there are three different products. There's the original Dramamine, which everyone talks about, but that makes you sleepy. Drowsiness is not an option if you are fitting all four parks into one day! So there's a less drowsy version, which you can take one to two per 24 hours. There's also a non-drowsy version which is basically just concentrated ginger tablets and you can take four of those per 24 hours. Although Kevin mixed those, we are not medical professionals, so you probably want to consult your physician. We are just sharing what worked for Kevin. He also wore Sea-Bands on each wrist. Although these tools made a massive difference in how motion-sickness affected his day, he still had to monitor how he was feeling and make adjustments to the sequence of rides to make sure he didn't get too sick. Simulations, It's a Small World, and Spaceship Earth were actually the worst. The Itinerary Because this was a party day, purchasing a party ticket allowed them to start the day at rope-drop and end at the close of the party (midnight). First park: Animal Kingdom Even though the park's posted opening was 9:00 am, they ended up opening up at 8:00 am for everyone headed to Pandora (either Navi River Journey or Flight of Passage). The Cast Members slowly walk you back to Pandora. This strategy was a huge success - Kevin and Erin were OFF of Flight of Passage at 8:55 am. They were able to do the most popular ride in the park before the park even opened (and without FastPasses!) Their next ride was Kilimanjaro Safaris because the animals are out more in the morning (or maybe late in the day). FastPasses: Expedition Everest Dinosaur Navi River Journey First meal of the day: Satu'li Canteen based on the recommendation from The Disney Food Blog. Second park: Hollywood Studios Transportation: Bus from Animal Kingdom to Hollywood Studios (arrival at 1:30 pm) Third park: Epcot Transportation: Because they were told a bus would be a 20-minute ride, Kevin opted to walk. Due to the construction and the heat, Kevin actually found this walk quite challenging and was one of two regrets of the day. The walk ended up taking 40 minutes (arrival at 5:15 pm). Fourth park: Magic Kingdom (Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party) Transportation: Monorail - Kevin wanted to point out that he was unaware that in all of his planning, he did not know that the monorail does not take you directly from Epcot to the Magic Kingdom.  Instead, it drops you off at the Ticket and Transportation Center. At this point, you take another monorail from the ticketing center over to the Magic Kingdom (arrival 7:00 pm). Budgeting tips for Walt Disney World Although the day is quite expensive and unfortunately the cost of the tickets is a significant expense, Kevin and Erin have worked hard to eliminate debt and they certainly were going to keep that mindset in planning their Disney day. He has kindly provided budgeting tips and advice he acquired while planning his Disney trip. Regarding the cost of the tickets, the best advice is to look at the calendar and review peak times and off-peak times. Kevin visited during an off-peak time, so he was able to save a few dollars on tickets. Consider staying off-property, as those resorts and hotels are generally less expensive. Do not go into debt in order to do a Disney vacation. Disney is not going anywhere anytime soon. You're going to have a much more enjoyable time if you're not sitting here worried about whether or not you can make the minimum payment on your credit card when you get home. Disney World, when you pay cash for it, is way more fun than when you're going into debt for it. If you're not staying on property, you don't have to have a Magic Band. Disney gives you a card, don't lose it because that would disrupt your day, so don't feel the need to spend additional dollars for Magic Bands for each person in your party.  That will really add up! Drink the free water! It's available at any Quick Service or cart with fountain beverages in the parks and resorts. You can bring a refillable water bottle if you would like to, just stay hydrated. Bring snacks. Consider not eating breakfast at the resort. If you're staying at an offsite hotel and they have a continental breakfast, of course, take advantage of that. If not, bring a box of cereal or have groceries shipped to your resort (we recommend Shipt or Amazon Prime Now). By eliminating one meal a day, you're going to save a ton of money. Breakfast alone can save hundreds of dollars depending on the size of your family, and you can take it one step further by getting some bread and making peanut butter and jelly and having those for lunch. Ponchos - Kevin's wife bought theirs at Walmart for $.97 each. They brought four ponchos: two for Kali River Rapids and two if they were to get caught in the rain during the day. Try to skip the gift shops at the ride exists and buy souvenirs at Disney outlets instead. Pack your park bag at home, then you are less likely to forget something. If you pack it and home and realize you are not checking sunscreen off your list, for example, it will be much less expensive to buy it at home as opposed to the parks! Uber or Lyft? Uber Lyft Minnie Vans (operated by Lyft) - photo courtesy of Disney Parks Blog[/caption] Kevin's Favorite Park Oh Man, I don't know, you know, our Epcot experience was stunted...So each one is so unique. I guess I would say we had the least amount of expectations for Hollywood Studios and that was the biggest surprise. More about Kevin and Debt Free Happens Debt Free Happens was created to share Kevin and Erin's experience of paying off over $107,000 of debt in less than three years. And don't think they made $200,000 a year to accomplish that massive goal. They actually made $83,000 combined in the beginning and then $170,000 in the end (two incomes combined). What you will like best about Debt Free Happens is that Kevin is open and honest with the mistakes that they've made in the past because they truly want to get you headed in the right direction. Their goal is to help you find a financially independent life and not let the fear of your debt paralyze you. Just never underestimate what you're able to do in your life, what you're able to do for yourself what you're able to do for others, you know, despite whatever happened in the past. Do know that there's always an opportunity to be able to make changes and to go forward and live that life that you really want to. I had a fantastic chat with Amanda who vacationed to Walt Disney World in September with her husband and her brother. We discussed a lot of details, especially around the free dining promotion and the Disney Dining Plan. She also gave a great review of Saratoga Springs, so we talked a lot about that lesser-known resort, which I think is really helpful. We dove into Food and Wine Festival just a little bit and Amanda shares her FastPass+ strategies. Just wait until you hear the most FastPasses she has ever gotten in one day. Get ready. Is Disney World just for kids? So many people ask, can I go as an adult (without kids) or is that weird? A lot of people think that Disney World is just for kids and Amanda's brother was one of those people. He thought that Walt Disney World was just a place for kids and he wasn't going to enjoy it, but it really is just somewhere that you can go and relax and enjoy yourself. They've truly got something for everyone. It's fantastic. Memorial day is right around the corner and the Navigators are discussing summer at Walt Disney World.   Sean, Sue, and Keith discuss various summer topics including how hot it really gets, how to stay cool, coolers in the parks and the best places to find shade.  They even discuss where the kids can get wet in the parks and it’s more than just Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids.   Sean, Sue and Keith also discuss how touring the parks changes in the summer and see if Sean’s “Commando” approach to touring the Magic Kingdom still works with the summer crowds.   This is followed by Susie Q’s Fastpass to the News.  The news includes a lengthy discussion about all of the new exciting attractions/shows coming to Walt Disney World this summer.  This is followed by speculation on why certain attractions are being refurbished this summer and what changes are being made.   Find out if Sean is a big fan of Animal Kingdom and where you can find the chemical formulas for Ketchup, Mustard and Mayonnaise on an attraction while visiting this park.   As always, a big thank you to Mickeytravels.com for being our sponsor.   We love our listeners and would love to hear from you! Send us an email at wdwnavigators@gmail.com, a tweet on Twitter at @wdwnavigators, or a post on our WDW Navigators Facebook page. Please leave us a review on iTunes and let us know what you think of the show.  You never know, you may get mentioned on the air! And be sure to look for our live Periscopes and Facebook Live! events from the Disney parks as well.
