When author and Wall Street Journal reporter Andrea Petersen was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder at age 20, she was relieved to finally have a name for the thing that had controlled most of her life to the point where she feared walking up a flight of stairs or standing in line at the store. But understanding and overcoming her anxieties was a different odyssey, one she describes in "On Edge: A Journey Through Anxiety," a memoir she was inspired to write after interviewing college students about their mental health struggles.
This week we explore the embodied aspect of mental illness. Resmaa Menakem discusses racial trauma and his book "My Grandmother's Hands." Andrea Petersen discusses anxiety and her book "On Edge." Yael Shy shares mindfulness tips and a guided meditation. Open Stacks is the official podcast of the Seminary Co-operative Bookstores.
Andrea Petersen is a science and health reporter who hasn’t just studied anxiety from a reporter’s standpoint; she has lived with it. Her new book, On Edge: A Journey Through Anxiety gives an honest and heartfelt account of living with anxiety and how she learned to come to terms with it. Andrea looks at how anxiety affected her, how she overcame it, and shows us some of the groundbreaking research that’s being done on anxiety.
For the 100th episode of Life Stories, the podcast where I've been talking to memoir writers about their lives and the art of writing memoir, I wanted to do something special. So, in the spring of 2017, I sat down with Kat Kinsman, the author of Hi, Anxiety: Life with a Bad Case of Nerves, and Andrea Petersen, the author of On Edge: A Journey Through Anxiety, for a wide-ranging discussion about their personal experiences with anxiety disorder, about maintaining their mental health while dealing with the pressures of their careers in the media industry—like, what does and doesn't work for them, and why it might or might not work for someone else suffering from anxiety—and about the battle that was then raging to protect our government health care programs. (A battle that we'll undoubtedly have to fight again before too long.) Sometimes it's hard to believe that it's been nearly six years since I uploaded my first Life Stories interview, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have talked to so many fascinating people about their experiences, and about how they've striven to communicate their experiences to others. There's several more interviews already in the pipeline, and while the schedule has been somewhat erratic at times, I'm hoping to establish a steady rhythm in 2018. I hope you'll continue to join me for those conversations!

Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Andrea Petersen to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss her new book ON EDGE: A Journey Through Anxiety.
"Fear ambushes me." Those words, written by Andrea Petersen in her book, On Edge: A Journey Through Anxiety, resonate with many individuals."Fear ambushes me."Those words, written by Andrea Petersen in her book, On Edge: A Journey Through Anxiety, resonate with many individuals.Andrea was a sophomore in college when she had her first noticeable encounter with anxiety. One moment she felt fine. The next, her heart rate spiked, she was short of breath and broke into a sweat, and was experiencing visual changes. She had an overwhelming terror that she was about to die. At the time, had no idea what she'd experienced was a panic attack. For the next month or so, she experienced those intense physical sensations and dread. Unfortunately, Andrea was not diagnosed correctly for a full year. That was in 1990. There is more awareness now among the medical and general communities as to what anxiety entails. But, anxiety also manifests in physical symptoms that can mirror other conditions and confuse a definitive diagnosis. So many different factors can contribute to anxiety, including:Childhood trauma or illness (e.g., asthma or bronchitis)Adult traumaCertain kinds of parentingGeneticsHigh-reactive temperamentIn the throes of anxiety, individuals may come off as selfish, because they're so consumed with their own worry and fear that they have no time or energy for anyone else. Andrea describes it as being in an isolation chamber, separated from those you love.Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one way to address symptoms. With CBT, you systematically and gradually expose yourself to the very things you're scared of in order to prove to yourself that the terrible things you believe will happen won't.Varieties of medication can also be helpful in the appropriate situations. Some medications work immediately to address panic attacks. Natural techniques including yoga, mindfulness meditation, massage, or anything that grounds you in the present moment can help prevent relapse of attacks. One of the activities Andrea finds comfort and ease in is baking.Quality sleep is imperative for reducing both frequency and duration of anxiety spells.Listen as Andrea shares her own personal journey with anxiety, as well as options for managing symptoms in daily life.
