When did soft skills like empathy become deprioritized in the tech industry? My guest today shares a little history lesson on how that happened and why initially those soft, human skills were always a vital part of successful innovation and technology before they got separated. Only now are they finding their way back to each other in software development and programming to solve the 21st century's most complex challenges. Today, I talk with Andrea Goulet. We talk about how soft skills like empathy lost favor in technology curricula, and how she built her business centered around empathy before it successfully merged with another company. She talks about the research she uncovered on programming models that parallel human communication. And we discussed why the current AI landscape is moving so fast but that her models can be used to ensure we intentionally apply empathy to deal with long-term consequences while still gaining short-term benefits. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Investing in empathetic communication will positively impact any team you're on. Having a good understanding of empathy drives any industry.80 to 90% of our miscommunications happen at the concept level because you can say something and someone can understand the word but might think of it as a different thing. The four dimensions of human communication and our ability to pivot and understand one another are: catch, collect, connect, and communicate. "Whether we're talking about software, building pyramids, or finding new ways to hunt and take down the mammoth, empathy is the mechanism that enables us to communicate, collaborate, and solve complex problems together." — Andrea Goulet Episode References:Ilana Ben-Ari: How The Empathy Toy is Changing the WorldFrom Our Partner:SparkEffect partners with organizations to unlock the full potential of their greatest asset: their people. We vulnerably hear about her childhood, how she grew up in a military family, experienced abuse and bullying, and how that lead her to speaking her voice and standing up for herself. We talk about her marriage and how that brought her to facing her own “shit”. We talk about one of her offerings which is a class called Selfish Bitch, and all the things that come with that: saying “no”, identifying as a “people pleaser”, social conditioning, victimhood, radical responsibility for ourselves, voicing our desires, knowing ourselves, working with Human Design, and so much more. The most popular question I get, by far, is how to balance empathy and accountability. often a false impression of empathy that makes us ask this question in the first place.Today, I'm talking with Andrea Butcher, CEO of HRD, a Leadership Development Company. Andrea is a visionary—she knows how to lead organizations from big picture to execution. Today we talk about what emerging leaders are asking for in leadership development programs, which skills they want to strengthen, and what is vital to help all leaders in today's landscape be successful. We discuss how the work of leadership is self-development, how empathy and accountability co-exist, and why clear communication is so vital because you can't hold someone accountable to an expectation that was never set. She shares a lovely story about showing up as yourself, and another about how to respond to someone who has dropped the ball. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Every leader should have a coach. Everyone can benefit from having a safe place to struggle through challenges. As humans, we connect through weakness and vulnerability. But it takes confidence to feel those emotions and show that vulnerability while still recognizing your worth. Asking for feedback from trusted employees and advisors is a great path forward in becoming a better leader. It will do a lot to build trust and reinforce the relationship too. "You can't hold someone accountable for an expectation that has not been set. So much of the time it's the lack of clarity that's getting in the way." — Andrea Butcher Episode References: The Empathy Edge Podcast: Claude Silver: Leading With Heart At Vayner MediaThe Empathy Edge Podcast: Anna Liotta: Understanding Generational CodesExecutive Coach Ed Batista article on empathy and accountabilityAbout Andrea Butcher, CEO, HRDAndrea is a visionary—she knows how to lead organizations from big picture to execution. We specifically chat through:Embracing the Unknown: Finding Purpose in the WildernessThe Power of Faith: Trusting God's Process in Business and LifeNurturing Connections: Cultivating Genuine Relationships and Seeking GuidanceAndrea shares her experiences and wisdom, offering valuable perspectives on cultivating authentic relationships and seeking guidance in both personal and professional spheres. Whether you're navigating your own wilderness moments or seeking inspiration to propel you forward, this conversation promises practical advice and encouragement. So, as you journey onward, may you find courage in embracing life's both-and, trusting in God's process, and nurturing authentic relationships that guide and sustain you. Remember, you're never alone, and every step forward brings you closer to the Purpose and fulfillment that await you.Connect with Andrea:Website: https://phenixcounseling.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/phenixcounseling/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/phenixcounseling/My heart's desire is to facilitate your mental and emotional freedom. I love creating the space and processes for you to discover your true self and to create healthy relationships from that place of authenticity. I enjoy helping you apply all of this to the workplace as well – whether identifying your calling or building a healthy culture for those you lead. I'm known for creating accessible processes for healing and development within a warm, no-judgment relationship. It started with earning my master's degree in counseling back in 2003. My unplanned discovery of counseling when I lost my mother had inspired me to return to school as a young mom to pursue this profession. Life was full of blessings but also included a difficult marriage, a beautifully complex daughter with a chronic illness, confronting the details of my own adoption history which had never been discussed, facing the cultural ramifications of being a first generation adult in the US (coming from Jamaica), then losing my daughter and a few years later, my marriage. By the grace of God, I managed to complete a rigorous PhD in counselor education and supervision in the midst of it all. Education, training and life experience combined to create an expertise in human transformation. I'm now a ‘wilderness' guide, walking others through trauma recovery, grief, loss, and building identity. I also find myself shepherding adoptees who want to process the dynamics unique to us, which were swept under the rug when we were kids. Outside the counseling room, I invest in partnerships that merge faith and psychology. Coaching local leaders to build lay counseling ministries across the globe is how you will find me serving others. Today, I am blessed to be in a healthy marriage. We have a ‘spicy' cat named Kameko. I get excited about planning and running holistic retreats. When I'm not at my desk, you can often find me working on an art project, listening to music, reading, watching something funny, hiking or traveling.

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing menopausal symptoms through diet, there are certain foods and/ or ingredients that may exacerbate these symptoms for some women and should be avoided. Sleep disruptions are a common symptom experienced by many women during menopause. Three factors which contribute to these sleep disturbances include hormonal changes, hot flashes and night sweats, stress and lifestyle factors, and having to go to the bathroom more often. Weight-lifting is crucial in this stage of life. Women are at risk of losing muscle mass and strength due to hormonal changes. Resistance training helps counteract muscle loss, which can lead to improved functional capacity and overall physical well-being.

You know how I feel about one-size-fits-all solutions to anything, and the health and wellness industry is no exception. So when we cover topics like todays, I'm always careful to bring people on who will share what they've learned, what they know to be true, their expertise BUT ALSO say that YOU need to figure out what's right, best, and true for you. Said another way, they offer solutions, just not the one-size fits all kind. With that in mind, let me introduce you to our guest. Andrea Nakayama is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist, educator, and Host of the 15-Minute Matrix Podcast, where she draws on systems biology, mental models, root cause methodology and the therapeutic partnership to offer long-awaited solutions for the rapidly growing chronic illness epidemic. Andrea is leading a revolution in which we reclaim OWNERSHIP over our own health. Here's all I know for sure: your body is yours, you only get one, and you're the only one who has to, who gets to, take care of it. There are many ways we can abandon ourselves, but hating our bodies so much that we don't even listen to them anymore has got to be pretty high up on the list. Prioritizing our health and longevity is the most beautiful thing we can do. Are you constantly feeling high-strung and like there's never enough time to do anything? Or perhaps you're the opposite and feel totally paralyzed and have absolutely no energy or motivation to do anything at all? The good news is that you are not crazy OR lazy…you've become dysregulated. Andrea Freemyer, a neuroscientist, trauma informed breathwork facilitator, and embodiment guide came onto the pod to talk about all things nervous system and offer her personal story and insights to help us better understand what is happening within the body when we become overwhelmed and distressed in our daily lives. We specifically dive into the captivating realms of the sympathetic and dorsal vagus states, which we mostly identify as ‘anxiety' and ‘depression.' Within these states, the logical faculties of our brains can falter, leaving us tethered solely to the emotional and fear-based aspects of our being. Understanding this connection becomes an indispensable tool for navigating our mental and emotional landscapes, paving the way towards greater well-being. Episode Highlights:[00:00:25] Using breathwork to gain perspective and clarity in life[00:00:25] Personal experiences of feeling a loss of joy and resistance to encouragement[00:17:07] The fight or flight response and how we've been socialized to identify with it[00:27:14] Navigating personal crises[00:31:49] Repatterning the Mind and Embracing Rest[00:35:19] Understanding the amount of time & compassion required for re-patterningQuotes to ponder:"When we are in a state where the logical part of the brain is offline, our thoughts can become dark and colored by the lenses of that state."Learn more about Andrea:Website: https://www.elementalwellnesssanctuary.com/retreatsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreafreemyer.phd/—Get 6 FREE weeks of the Superhuman app with our code ‘SPIRALINGHIGHER':https://www.superhuman.app/register—Join our FREE community :https://tinyurl.com/SpiralinghighercommunityClear your money blocks & learn how to tap into true ABUNDANCE to become a money master: https://simplifyingsam.mykajabi.com/abundance-money-workshop-replay Apply for 1:1 coaching with Sam:https://www.simplifyingsam.com/1on1coachingJoin Gina's waitlist for coaching:https://tinyurl.com/btewaitlistFollow Spiraling Higher:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/spiralinghigherFollow Simplifying Sam:Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@simplifying.samInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/simplifying.samFollow Gina:Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@bournetoelevateInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/bournetoelevateFor all inquiries, email us at:Spiralinghigher@gmail.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
Welcome to episode 111 of the Transformational Selling Podcast! In this episode, best-selling Co-Author, Andrea Waltz, joins me to discuss the themes of her new novel, When They Say No. She co-wrote the book with her husband, Richard. If you haven't read the first book yet, Go For No!, you can grab a copy on Amazon. Aside from being a talented writer, Andrea Waltz is also the co-founder of Courage Crafters, where she teaches people in virtually every business and industry how to think and feel differently about failure, rejection, and the word, “no.” Today, Go for No! is a well-known methodology in the world of selling and is widely recognized as the singular best program that deals with rejection in business. Andrea's second book, When They Say No, incorporates the concepts of the first book, but she peels back the layers even more, identifying what to think, say, and do upon rejection and resistance. Together, we dive deep into what it's like to sell while battling fear and worrying about hearing the word, “no.” Through tangible examples and real-life stories, we outline how to strategically cope with rejection and persevere. Specifically, here's what you will learn: How hearing more no's can lead to more yes's. How to handle and react to rejection in a strategic way. The importance of asking the right questions while actively listening. The power of adapting and modifying your physiology. The impact of consistency. Black people in Philly kept telling me, "talk to Andrea", so I did! Andrea Walls hits the mic with this question during my interview episode with her as part my ‘Black joy stories in Philly' section of this podcast and a warm conversation (and building friendship) grows from there…I came to Andrea's work by attending the 2021 Black Joy symposium in Philadelphia and felt so many alignments with her approach to learning from and center joy as critical practice. This is a long conversation (imagine: it was edited down but we had A LOT to say) about healing, story-sharing, and doing work that embraces the nuance, complexity, and contradiction that is the human experience. Activity: If you can, get a scoop of ice cream before u hit play and just vibe with us! PS. Andrea's favorite flavor last I checked is: salted caramel!! Trigger: deep discussions about grieving while Black. Deep discussions about Black joy (theory and practice).
