Walter Raleigh remains one of the most famous figures of the late-Tudor and early-Stuart period. His life epitomised Elizabethan energy and ambition - though many of his grand schemes ended in failure. Raleigh was a soldier, sailor, courtier, writer, politician, explorer, and colonist. Depending on who you ask, he was also a pirate and traitor, or a patriot and hero. So how did this perplexing figure rise from comparatively humble beginnings to become one of Queen Elizabeth's favourites? Did he embark on overseas adventures for the sake of his nation, or for his own gain? And should we consider him an enlightened imperialist, or a man who oppressed and exploited indigenous communities? This is a Short History Of….Walter Raleigh. A Noiser Production, written by Dan Smith. With thanks to Dr Anna Beer, author of Patriot or Traitor: The Life and Death of Sir Walter Raleigh. Episode 6 is the intentionally hidden story of the two most important collaborators in the life of celebrated writer Jane Austen: her older sister Cassandra and Anne Sharp, a governess and Jane's only fellow writer friend. Host Katie Harman unfolds the story of the influence of both women in Jane's life and writing, as well as the shocking background of why their names have been buried in historical accounts of Jane's life. The episode also features several snippets of Jane's private letters (read by AI voice!) and a terrific interview with researcher and author Dr. Anna Beer. Betwixt The Sheets: The History of Sex, Scandal & Society

The Bard's work featured many references to sex and sexuality - some more obvious than others. But what does the work reveal about the sexuality of Shakespeare himself? Despite being married with three kids to Anne Hathaway in the sleepy suburbs of Stratford-upon-Avon, there's much to suggest he lived a more extravagant life during his visits to London. Joining Kate today is author of The Life of the Author: William Shakespeare, Anna Beer, to unpick the hints and clues to the playwright's sexuality that lay within his work. Produced by Stuart Beckwith & Sophie Gee. In Episode 1 of Virtuosa Society's inaugural season, host Katie Harman weaves together two different tales of collaboration between royal circles. First, the little known behind-the-scenes story of what is widely considered one of the first operas ever written: La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina (“The Liberation of Roger from the Island of Alcina”). The twist? It was deliberately meant to send a collaborative message of gender equality by three wildly different women in service to the Medici Family in 1620s Tuscany: Francesca Caccini - chief composer for the Medici for over three decades and a professional female musician able to carve out an extraordinarily rare career during the Italian Renaissance, alongside powerful Medici matriarch Christine de Lorraine and her headstrong Austrian daughter-in-law Maria Magdelena. Together they formed The Women's Court, and their desire to protect and project the lives of strong women converged on one unforgettable night in 1625. In connection, Katie recalls a poignant reunion between her Miss America sisters in 2015 and shares a meaningful snippet of her conversation with Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler, talking about the importance of sharing our stories to uplift the experience of womanhood. Special thanks to the extensive research of Professor Suzanne Cusick, author of Francesca Caccini at the Medici Court: Music and the Circulation of Power, as well as Dr. Anna Beer, author of Sounds and Sweet Airs: The Forgotten Women of Classical Music. Their work was referenced throughout this podcast. Stay tuned for a feature interview with Dr. Anna Beer in a future episode! The music of Francesca Caccini's La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina was from a terrific 2017 recording by Allabastrina. Francesca Caccini (1587-c.1641) is one of the forgotten women of classical music. She was an exceptional singer and instrumentalist, but above all, an immensely talented composer. Working full time at the Medici court from the age of 20, Caccini became one of its best paid employees. Many of her compositions have been lost, but her only surviving stage work, La liberazione di Ruggiero, is considered to be the oldest opera by a woman composer. In this edition of Not Just the Tudors, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb finds out more about this great and neglected composer from biographer Dr. Anna Beer and Deborah Roberts, Artistic Director of the Brighton Early Music Festival. The podcast features excerpts of Caccini's music from Ars Lyrica Houston's programme, Italian Sirens, recorded in Zilkha Hall, Hobby Centre for the Performing Arts, Houston, Texas on 12 November 2017 with Sydney Anderson (soprano), Cecilia Duarte (mezzo-soprano) and Matthew Dirst (Artistic Director). Pirates come in many forms – from swashbuckling Captain Hook to today's poverty-stricken pirates off the coast of Somalia. It’s 400 years since one of the most charismatic and controversial figures in English history was executed. Sir Walter Ralegh was a favourite of Elizabeth I and was a famous adventurer and poet. But his exploits divided opinion even in his own lifetime, and his biographer Anna Beer tells Kirsty Wark the Spanish regarded him as a state-sponsored pirate. Captain Hook, Long John Silver and Jack Sparrow are at the heart of a new exhibition on fictional pirates at the V & A Museum of Childhood. The exhibition, curated by Will Newton, explores adventures on the high seas and charts how the moral ambiguity of Robert Louis Stevenson’s creation became the romanticised and sanitised version in today’s popular imagination. In 2012 the journalist Michael Scott Moore, who had covered the first trial in Europe of a Somali pirate, travelled to the Horn of Africa to find out more. He ended up being kidnapped and held captive for 977 days. He explores the historical and political case for piracy in Somalia, as well as religious extremism and the art of survival aboard a hijacked ship. Last month an American and a Chinese ship nearly collided in the South China Sea - which would probably have led to a major war, explains Veerle Nouwens. Through her role at defence think tank the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) she monitors the ongoing race to control the South China Sea. She explains when an island is not an island, and why a calamity in this shipping route could bring chaos to the global economy. Producer: Hannah Sander Plastic pirate figures © Papo
