This week's conversation focuses on a market environment defined by patience, uncertainty, and shifting expectations. The team walks through February economic data, highlighting steady industrial production, stable jobless claims, and a hotter producer price index that feeds directly into the Fed's preferred PCE measure. Attention then turns to the FOMC decision to hold rates steady, with Chair Powell reinforcing a higher‑for‑longer mindset amid sticky inflation and a more dispersed dot plot. The discussion expands to private credit, separating recent headlines from underlying fundamentals, before closing with an equity market check on oil prices, inflation risks, and what flexibility and positioning mean for investors navigating a less predictable path forward. Speakers:Brian Pietrangelo, Managing Director of Investment StrategyGeorge Mateyo, Chief Investment OfficerSteve Hoedt, Head of EquitiesCindy Honcharenko, Director of Fixed Income Portfolio Management David Harvan, Senior Lead Research Analyst of Multi-Strategy Research 02:17 — Economic data sets the backdrop for markets03:38 — FOMC decision, projections, and Powell's message10:32 — Private credit fundamentals versus recent headlines17:24 — Equity markets, technical levels, and oil volatility22:00 — Gold, Nvidia, and closing investment perspective Additional ResourcesNational Call Replay: Navigating Noise, Finding Meaning: A Conversation with Brian Portnoy, PhD, CFARead: Key Questions: How Will Tariffs Impact My Financial Plan? Key QuestionsWeekly Investment BriefSubscribe to our Key Wealth Insights newsletterFollow us on LinkedIn

Marcus Daniell, a decorated tennis player and Olympic bronze medalist, understands this better than most. He founded High Impact Athletes to channel that influence toward causes that measurably improve lives. When I spoke with Marcus, he shared how the transition from tennis to philanthropy wasn't sudden. As soon as he began earning enough from his career, he started giving back—carefully. "I didn't really trust the charities that I'd grown up around, and I wanted to do my own research," he said. That research led him to the concept of effective giving: doing the most good per dollar. What started with a personal 1% pledge grew into something much bigger. "There was a greater purpose to the grind of being a tennis player," Marcus said. "Every match that I won had something bigger off the back of it."That sense of purpose eventually inspired High Impact Athletes. Marcus guessed he'd have to persuade fellow athletes one by one, but the response surpassed expectations. "Very quickly it became obvious that there was a real appetite amongst the athlete community for something they could trust."Today, the organization has over 230 elite athletes across 50 sports and 35 countries. They're not just giving—they're amplifying impact by inspiring fans to do the same. "Athletes have a place in society where they have a really powerful voice," Marcus explained. "They can cut through different levels of society."The group recently partnered with High Rocks, a global fitness event series, to expand peer-to-peer fundraising. Participants can support causes like global health, climate change, mental health and women's empowerment. While High Impact Athletes isn't currently running a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign, the model it showcases is one worth noting. It proves that purpose and influence can merge to make philanthropy more effective and more human. The emotional impact is tangible. One athlete shared with Marcus that his High Impact Athletes key rings, earned for hitting donation milestones, were as meaningful as any sports medal. "That really touched me," Marcus said. This isn't just about giving. It's about creating lasting meaning from influence—and Marcus is helping athletes do just that.tl;dr:Marcus Daniell shares how Olympic-level tennis success led him to a life of purpose-driven philanthropy.High Impact Athletes empowers elite athletes to give effectively and mobilize fans for global good.Marcus explains that charity effectiveness varies greatly, making donation impact a key focus for change.Through partnerships like High Rocks, High Impact Athletes expands reach via peer-to-peer fundraising events.Marcus reveals his superpower—dealing with failure—and how resilience fueled both his athletic and nonprofit journeys. How to Develop Dealing with Failure As a SuperpowerMarcus Daniell describes his superpower as the ability to productively deal with failure. He explains that this skill is essential for professional athletes, who face constant challenges and losses. “In order to be a successful tennis player, you must be able to deal with failure productively,” Marcus said during today's episode. He emphasizes the importance of processing setbacks, learning from mistakes, and moving forward with renewed focus.Marcus shared a moving example from the 2016 Rio Olympics. After losing a first-round tennis match with match points against Canada, he and his partner, Michael Venus, were devastated. Though it took hours to process the emotions, they eventually had a heartfelt conversation, owning their mistakes and vowing to return stronger. This commitment paid off, as the duo later earned a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, a triumph Marcus cherishes deeply.Tips for Developing Resilience:Process Emotions: Allow yourself time to feel and understand your disappointment before moving on.Own Your Mistakes: Acknowledge your role in setbacks without dwelling on them.Commit to Growth: Use failure as a motivator to improve and set new goals.Find Perspective: Compare challenges to broader contexts to reduce their emotional weight.Focus on the Future: Create a tangible plan to move forward, shifting energy toward progress.By following Marcus' example and advice, you can make resilience a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMarcus Daniell (he/him):Founder and Executive Director, High Impact AthletesAbout High Impact Athletes: At HIA we are transforming how sport serves the world. We connect world-class athletes with world-class charities—organizations that bring a high-performance mindset to making positive change. Our athlete community is a star-studded lineup of world champions, Olympic champions, world record holders and league professionals taking action and making a difference. Despite sport's immense potential to drive change, there's a critical gap between possibility and reality. Not all charities are created equal. Every year, billions flow into feel-good causes and foundations with limited outcomes, chasing nice stories over tangible progress. Less than 1% of global philanthropy follows the data to identify and support the highest-performing charities.Athletes have seized their place, not just in sport, but in society, leading conversations and commanding global attention on and off the field. Given the right platform, they can inspire the world to solve two critical problems in philanthropy: how much we choose to give, and where our giving goes.

[From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2021] On today's episode of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with ATP Pro Marcus Willis about how he went from teaching tennis lessons for 30 pounds an hour (about $40) to playing Roger Federer on Center Court at Wimbledon in 2016.  Marcus has reached a career high ranking of #322 in singles and #209 in doubles on the ATP tour. He was also ranked as high as 15 in the combined junior world rankings. But Marcus struggled to breakthrough on the pro tour until he decided to work harder than everyone else and had a support system that held him accountable. Then in 2016 his hard work paid off; he got through pre-qualifying, qualifying, and his first round match to face arguably the greatest player of all time on Center Court at Wimbledon. On the show, you'll learn the in-depth story behind Marcus's incredible run at Wimbledon, how he was able to win against much higher ranked players, the key to transforming his career in 2016, the biggest mistakes that amateur players make, Marcus's huge win in doubles against the defending Wimbledon champions the following year, how to succeed on the tour, and much more! Her life adventures have included circumnavigating Cuba by bike, diving with hammerheads in the Galapagos, and winning tickets to London off of Facebook (yes, really!) where she was able to attend a match at Center Court in Wimbledon. She reviews her weekend in Denver filming her upcoming Amazon Original Special at the Paramount Theatre, which is one of her favorite places to do shows. She talks about eating breakfast at Sam's No3 and hanging out with her good friend and surprise opening act, the iconic George Wallace. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Boulder Canyon Classic Sea Salt kettle chips, which she thinks have a terrific crunch. She then samples Dale's Wild West Elk Jerky, and she loves the salty taste. She finishes her tasting with Old El Paso Zesty Ranch Sauce, which she doesn't think tastes anything like Ranch but offers that it might be ok on tacos. QUEEN'S COURT: It has been a quiet week for the Court, but Kathleen shares that her friend Kathe saw Tanya Tucker in North Carolina last weekend and thinks that Queen Tanya's live show is better than ever.UPDATES: Kathleen gives updates on the opening of ABBA's Voyage avatar concert series in London, another Russian oligarch's super yacht is seized in a UAE creek, Anna Delvey defrauds another “friend,” Elon Musk has issued a back-to-the-office ordinance and “the children” revolt, and the world's oldest man celebrates his 113th birthday in Venezuela. “HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND IT”: Kathleen is amazed to read about the discovery in Alabama of the largest prehistoric cave drawings ever found in North America, and a 2,100 year old farmstead found “frozen in time in Israel. RUSSIAN SUPERYACHTS VANISHING FROM GLOBAL TRACKING: In maintaining her obsession regarding crushing the power of Russian oligarchs, Kathleen reads an article stating that superyachts linked to sanctioned Russian oligarchs are vanishing from global tracking systems in an attempt to avoid sanctions, according to an investigation by The Observer. PROTESTERS GONE WILD: Kathleen continues with her reporting on crazy protesters, reading about 2 recent protest actions: a French Open tennis protester ties herself to the Center Court net during the men's semifinal, and the Mona Lisa was smeared with cake in an apparent climate protest. MAN DRESSES AS COLLIE TO BECOME A DOG: Kathleen is baffled reading an article about a Japanese man who spent more than $15,000 to fulfill his dream of transforming into a four-legged animal. The man, known only by his Twitter username, Toco, spent 2 million Japanese yen, or about $15,700, to create a lifelike rough-collie costume that he could inhabit.POST OFFICE VACANCY IN ANTARCTICA: Kathleen thinks she knows a few Termites who would jump at the chance to take a job running the world's most remote post office in Antarctica. The post is at Port Leroy, and responsibilities include counting penguins and running the gift shop. MCDONALD'S AND STARBUCKS LEAVE RUSSIA: Kathleen reads announcements that McDonald's is leaving Russia, with the stores being sold and will continue to operate under a new proposed brand name called “Fun and Tasty.” She also reads that Starbucks is leaving the Russian market, following McDonald's move. GALLERY OWNER CHARGED WITH COUNTERFEIT ART SALES: Kathleen loves the fine art world, and is enthralled with an article about a Florida gallery owner who has been charged with selling fake Banksy, Warhol, and Basquiat paintings to rich Palm Beach buyers. AMERICA'S LAST HOWARD JOHNSON'S RESTAURANT CLOSES: Kathleen reads an announcement that the last surviving Howard Johnson's restaurant has closed, which was located in Lake George NJ.
