Endlich mal ein Album aus der Barock-Ecke, das sich ganz der Musik einer Frau widmet: Il segreto delle muse bringt Arien und Duette von Barbara Strozzi heraus.

Katrin Schumacher empfiehlt diese Woche drei Hörbücher: Tilman Spreckelsens "Otfried Preußler", Elke Heidenreichs "Frau Doktor Moormann und ich" und die Hörbiografie "Barbara Strozzi: Lauscht, ihr Liebenden!"

Natürlich hatte auch sie es in einer von Männern dominierten Welt schwer, gerade im Italien des 17. Jahrhunderts. Dabei hat sie als Komponistin ein umfangreiches Œuvre hinterlassen, darunter acht Bände mit meist weltlicher Vokalmusik, über 120 Einzelwerke insgesamt. Doch es hat bis zum Jahr 1978 gedauert, bis erstmals ein wissenschaftlicher Artikel über Barbara Strozzi erschienen ist. Jetzt hat der Autor Jörg Handstein eine Hör-Biographie über sie veröffentlicht. Christoph Vratz über die neue Folge mit Komponist:innen-Hörbüchern.

Hildegard von Bingen und Barbara Strozzi, dazu hebräische Gesänge und Sufimusik. Die Konzertreihe "Music for the one God" spürt dem gemeinsamen Ursprung von Judentum, Christentum und Islam nach. Am 24. November steht die Musik von Frauen im Mittelpunkt. Beim Konzert im Herkulessaal der Münchner Residenz treten unter anderem der Mädchenchor der Regensburger Domspatzen und Solistinnen aus München, Jerusalem und Istandbul. Melbourne-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Claire Deak talks about her debut solo album, Sotto Voce, and the two women composers of the Baroque whose music she recovered and reimagined – Francesca Caccini (1587-c. 1645) and Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677). Some of their compositions are intuitively sensed and worked into new neoclassical compositions by Claire using a range of Baroque and modern instruments, as well as innovative modern and analogue recording techniques that bend our concept of time. It was at Emu Field, SA on October 15, 1953 that a terrifying black mist spread across the land after an atomic bomb detonation (Totem 1), bringing death and sickness to Aboriginal people and other people in its path. Secrecy around the testing activities and its effects still exists today. Totem 2 was detonated on October 27, 1953. Elizabeth is an Associate Professor at James Cook University. Her previous book, Atomic Thunder: The Maralinga Story, won the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Australian History and the CHASS Australia Book Prize in 2017. Also 64 Aufnahmen mit Instrumenten oder Manuskripten aus den Sammlungen bzw. anderer Werke die mit der Stadt Innsbruck oder dem Land Tirol zu tun haben. Die jüngste Ausgabe beschäftigt sich mit Andachtsmusik für die Tiroler Landesfürstin Anna de‘ Medici von Barbara Strozzi. Michael Gmasz ist vor allem von Federico Fiorio fasziniert. Anna de‘ Medici, durch ihre Heirat mit Erzherzog Ferdinand Karl von Österreich-Tirol 1646 zur Tiroler Landesfürstin geworden, war eine kunstsinnige Frau und liebte wie ihr Ehemann die Musik und das Theater. Das ist wohl einer der Gründe, warum der Innsbrucker Hof in der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts zu einem Musikzentrum von europäischem Rang avancierte. Pietro Antonio Cesti und der spätere Wiener Hofkapellmeister Antonio Pancotti gehörten wohl zu den prominentesten Vertretern der Hofkapelle. Mit der Widmung der „Sacri Musicali Affetti“ erhoffte sich auch die venezianische Komponistin Barbara Strozzi von Anna de‘ Medici eine Anstellung am Hof, zu der es allerdings nie gekommen ist. Immerhin ein kleines goldenes Schatzkästchen und ein Halsband mit Rubinen gab es als Dank für die großzügige musikalische Zueignung. Ergänzt um Instrumentalwerke aus der selben Zeit ist das geistliche Op. 5 von Strozzi nun auf CD nachzuhören. Auf seiner Debüt-CD ist das Ensemble La florida Capella, das bereits im Jahr seiner Gründung 2021 den renommierten Heinrich Ignaz Franz-Biber-Wettbewerb für sich entscheiden konnte, gemeinsam mit dem jungen, international erfolgreichen und von der Kritik gefeierten italienischen Sopranisten Federico Fiorio zu erleben. Und der junge Mann ist wirklich ein Erlebnis. Eine glockenhelle Sopranstimme, die manchmal Zweifel aufkommen lässt, dass es sich tatsächlich um einen jungen Mann handelt. Lupenreine Ansätze in höchsten Höhen. Eine ausgefeilte Technik, mit der Fiorio die schwierigen Koloraturen und Melismen meistert, und doch genug Schmelz, dass er auch in den lyrischen Passagen zu überzeugen weiß. Ein junger Sänger, von dem wir sicher in Zukunft noch einiges hören werden! (mg)

The singer, and composer Barbara Strozzi neither held any position at church or court, nor had a consistant patron, and yet she published eight volumes of her own music, and had more secular music in print than any other composer of the era. Donald Macleod is joined by Professor Laurie Stras to explore the life of this extraordinary musician, and the world of 17th Century Venice in which she lived and worked. Helen Cammock grew up wanting to be a singer, and performed on the folk circuit as a teenager. But then she stopped, and became a social worker for more than ten years. Finally, at the age of 35, she took up photography, went to art school – and she’s never looked back. She’s known now for her richly-layered video installations, which mix film archive, dance and poetry with current interviews, all woven together with music. She is the joint winner of the 2019 Turner Prize; for the first time in its 35-year history, the Prize was shared between all four artists on the shortlist, at their request. In Private Passions, she talks to Michael Berkeley about why music is at the heart of all her work. Last year the MaxMara art prize paid for her to spend six months working in Italy, and there she began to explore the subject of lament, and particularly laments sung by women. As part of her performance work, Helen Cammock began to take singing lessons again, and lament, loss, longing, and hopes for a better future, are all captured in the music she chooses. She shares the excitement of discovering little-known women composers of the 17th century Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi. She talks about the troubling incident which persuaded her to give up a career in social work, when she was told to abandon a young woman outside a police station. She remembers the isolation and boredom of growing up in the countryside of Somerset, and the racist abuse her family faced every Saturday when they went shopping together. ‘The Voices of Women will be performed at the Melbourne Recital Centre (Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, cnr Southbank Boulevard and Sturt Street, Melbourne) on 20 March 2018. In this podcast, CHE Deputy Director and leader of the Performance Program Jane Davidson talks to Marshall McGuire (Ludovico’s Band) about baroque female composers, historical music performances and emotions. This concert will enable audiences to catch a glimpse into the world of three Baroque female composers. The performance will feature works by composers Isabella Leonarda, Francesca Caccini and Barbara Strozzi, who were all active in Italy in the seventeenth century, and who enjoyed varying degrees of success during their lifetimes.

International Women's Day, celebrating female composers: Barbara Strozzi Lucie Skeaping is joined by Laurie Stras to profile the life and music of the prolific 17th Century Venetian composer and singer Barbara Strozzi. @bbcradio3 #womensday Born in 1617, the daughter of a servant girl Barbara was brought up and educated by the poet Giulio Strozzi, who was probably her father. She first tasted fame at her father's 'Academies' in Venice for her 'bold and graceful manner' before going on to publish eight volumes of music, mostly for solo voice. But, despite her remarkable achievements as a singer and composer, she appears to have died in poverty around 1677.
