Andrea Spencer is a Glass Artist who makes beautiful works of art from glass. Originally from England, Andrea has been based in a Games of Thrones location in Northern Ireland, Ballintoy, where she both lives and works. She finds much of her inspiration from nature and delights in investigating natural forms that are then transformed into symbolic objects or abstracted to create images. As Andrea considers her environment in Northern Ireland, she says, "It is very inspiring and I've always been very drawn to spending time in the natural world, especially as an immersive experience, being completely surrounded by nature or being in the water or standing on a precipice or steeped in the changing light, we get an incredible quality of light here that I think is due to the nature of being so close to the coast."Andrea also answers questions about the therapeutic value of spending time with horses, what may have triggered her fascination with the natural world, her love of birds both dead and alive.. and much more. The transcript along with images of the area, Andrea and her work can be found over at Ballintoy and The Causeway Coast with Andrea Spencer. This episode is sponsored by Property Insurance Centre.Podcast website:https://creativeplacesandfaces.com/Credits:Host: Jackie De BurcaSound engineer: Newton SamadderMusic: No.4 Piano Journey by Esther AbramiVoice over: Mike PayneSponsor Series 1:Property Insurance Centre
You are in for such a treat today. It is my honour and privilege to share with you our twelfth episode of 'From What If to What Next'. In the US, as elsewhere, vast amounts of money are poured into mass incarceration and brutal and violent policing. What if instead that money was invested into the communities that bear the burnt of this approach to criminal justice, into healthcare, wellbeing, opportunity, safety? It's a huge question, and such a rich What If question. Luckily we are joined in this podcast by two amazing guests to explore it. Andrea J. Ritchie is a Black lesbian immigrant police misconduct attorney and organizer whose writing, litigation, and advocacy has focused on policing and criminalization of women and LGBT people of color for the past two decades. She is currently Researcher in Residence on Race, Gender, Sexuality and Criminalization at the Barnard Center for Research on Women, where she recently launched the Interrupting Criminalization: Research in Action initiative. Zach Norris is the Executive Director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, author of We Keep Us Safe: Building Secure, Just, and Inclusive Communities, and co-founder of Restore Oakland, a community advocacy and training center that will empower Bay Area community members to transform local economic and justice systems and make a safe and secure future possible for themselves and for their families. These are tough times in the US. I was touched by both Andrea and Zach telling me how much they had been looking forward to recording this episode, how they had been looking forward to stepping out of the grave and knife-edge moment the US is living through and into some space to imagine how it could be. As Andrea puts it in this podcast, "our dreams are what will save us in this moment". I hope listening to this podcast moves you as much as it did to record it. My thanks for your support for this podcast, my thanks to Zach and Andrea, and to Ben Addicott for theme music and production. I would love to hear what you think of this episode. Do share your thoughts below. Thank you.

Andrea Hannah is an award-winning author, essayist, and workshop leader. She teaches on living a healthy creative life at her Wild Heart Retreats and writes about making art on Twitter and Instagram (@andeehannah). You can also find her at www.andreahannah.com Andrea is also a young adult author and creative writing teacher who has spent the past twelve years helping kids, teens, and adults transform their ideas into art. As Andrea worked through the education system, she noticed that even her most creative and willing students sometimes sabotaged their own work with their emotions and behavior. She went back to school and finished her Master's degree in Autism Spectrum Disorders with an emphasis on Applied Behavior Therapy. Using boatloads of research again (because that's how she rolls) on cognition and changing human behavior, she began to teach a wide variety of people not only the structure of writing, but how to deal with the emotional arc of making art. She has since branched out to teaching creativity workshops and retreats. To date, Andrea has taught about creativity to adults and teens all over the world. She believes so strongly in teaching about creativity in a structured—but fun and relatable—way because she's witnessed it work, not only with students of all ability levels and backgrounds, but with her own brother, Zack. When her mom died and she took custody of him, he was a depressed thirteen-year-old with a talent for playing music by ear. As he grew older, she slowly helped him through the process of learning to create again. She's happy to report that Zack is now a sound engineer who records musicians of all genres in New York City. And he still plays his own music by ear. The most effective mentors are the ones who use their own methods. Andrea is no exception. She used her own methodology to swing back into her creativity and write her critically-acclaimed YA novel, Of Scars and Stardust (Flux, 2014). She still uses these tools and techniques daily, whether she's working on her novels, nonfiction, or freelance work. And she used them, of course, to write her new creativity guidebook, A Map for Wild Hearts. ABOUT ANDREA LAMARRE:Andrea LaMarre has always been social-justice-minded: one of her earliest forays into eating disorder research was an exploration of how one might understand eating disorders as a social justice issue, due to the many barriers to care that exist for those who do not fit the expected presentation of eating disorders (i.e., those who are marginalized along the lines of their ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, body size, etc.). As Andrea has become increasingly engaged with the eating disorder advocacy and activism community, however, she has been galvanized by the real stories of those who are let down by our current continuum of care for eating disorders.Andrea’s research centers around recovery, which may seem a lesser concern in the face of these serious issues with access to care for eating disorders. However, Andrea has seen how hope for the future can be a powerful thing through engagement with various advocacy efforts over the years. She strongly believes that understanding recovery in a more complex, situated, systemic, and relational way can help to build supportive systems of care that are accessible, timely, and appropriate for the complexities of the people who seek them. In Andrea’s research, she aims to better understand what recovery means to diversely embodied (i.e., people from different ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, genders, body sizes, etc.) sufferers and their families. Andrea contends that by sharing lived experiences of recovery in the form of digital stories (short films about lived experience created in a facilitated workshop) one can create spaces for engaging in productive dialogue between healthcare providers, policymakers, and those with lived experience. This dialogue can help to understand what people and their families need in order to reach recovery.Andrea’s overall goal in all of her work is to increase access to health and wellness for diversely embodied people who have experienced eating distress. Approaching eating disorders with a systemic, social justice lens allows people to look beyond a perspective that positions them as issues of individual responsibility and vanity; it allows people to begin to understand how individuals interact with social and political systems and how this impacts their health. Research, to Andrea, is about more than simply producing scholarly knowledge. It is about deeply engaging with communities to work toward a world that honors diversity and breaks down barriers to access. It is about hearing the stories of those who are being let down, and, rather than being immobilized, working to create alternative possibilities.Andrea obtained her Ph.D. in 2018 at the University of Guelph, where she used qualitative and arts-based approaches to explore eating disorders recoveries from the perspectives of people in recovery and their chosen supporters. Andrea is a member of a number of organizations for eating disorder professionals, including the Academy for Eating Disorders and the Eating Disorders Association of Canada, and volunteers for the National Initiative for Eating Disorders in Canada. In her spare time, Andrea watches really bad TV, reads young adult fiction, and spends entirely too much time on Twitter. She can also be found hiking with her husband or attending too many conferences.CONNECT WITH ANDREA LAMARRE: • Visit AndreaLaMarre.com for more on Andrea’s activism, speaking, academia• Read Andrea’s recent article “Imperfect Recoveries and the Role of the Supporter”• See, hear, and read more from Andrea in the media, the Science of Eating Disorders blog, and her personal blog• View Andrea’s published academic work• Follow Andrea on TwitterABOUT KARIN LEWIS:Karin Lewis, MA, LMFT, CEDS has been recovered from Anorexia Nervosa for over 20 years and has been specializing in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders since 2005. Grief can impact our lives in so many ways, most notably in terms of identity. Just who do we become when the important people in our lives are taken away from us? Andrea A Moore and her husband have suffered devastating losses, including that of Andrea’s sister and her husband’s mother in a short space of time. The intense mourning caused by these events greatly negatively impacted their relationship and forced Andrea to ask herself some highly personal questions. Andrea has joined Lyn today to talk about the effect of loss upon love, and the path to recovery that has helped them both become more empowered and take back their lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS During grief, communication can break down and negatively impact the intimacy between a couple. This can have a ripple effect upon everyone else around them. Andrea experienced great anger when she lost her sister. As a result, she lost sight of the fact that at the same time, her husband was slowly watching his mother pass away. This led to a level of resentment and bitterness, which only served to strain the marriage relationship further. Andrea’s husband found it difficult to express his grief, as he was conditioned by society into believing that grief is not a “manly” virtue. Counselling was a step they both decided to take. Denial is a strong part of the process of grief. Feeling consumed by the depth of your anger, fear and sadness. The fear of how to live now that you feel more isolated. One of the most regrettable effects of a relationship breakdown, is the self-analysis that often follows, warped by a sense of what could have been, when in reality, many of those factors at the time, were out of our control. Physical grief is a real thing. Some choose to relieve themselves of pent up frustration, anger and intense grief, by lashing out at their partner. BEST MOMENTS ‘We didn’t know how to mourn. We just kept moving in different directions’ ‘I got lost in grief and forgot about my marriage’ ‘It’s almost like a movie that I wish I’d recorded’ ’The appearance of being okay is not okay’ ‘What people think about you is none of your business’ ‘Your body is grieving’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Andrea is the Midwife to Women with a story, Certified Bereavement Facilitator, Intuitive Grief Coach, Anthology Builder, Speaker and International Author. Andrea began her career in journalism, after being told that her real passion at the time, photography, wasn't a practical choice. Andrea later returned to photography both as a stock photo editor and a business owner, before deciding to return to the world of writing within a small digital marketing firm. She shares with us how she worked with adrenal fatigue, when she realized she needed to leave the 9-5 job, and how she structures her days now as a novelist. Andrea and I talk about how our priorities shifted when we left the corporate world. We've both found purpose outside of our work, and surprised ourselves at how useful we can be outside our professional wheelhouses. As Andrea learned to embrace the journey outside the corporate box, she's realized that she's ok with not knowing what's around the corner and she's happier than she's ever been pursuing her purpose as a writer. This episode I interview Andrea. She’s one of the reasons why I wanted to start a podcast. As Andrea puts it, "we’re two peas in the same pot". She has a way with sayings. In part 1, we laugh our way through her childhood, how her family escaped Czechoslovakia, what her memories of communism were, her first impressions of the west and Canada, and how she balanced being Slovak with being Canadian.
Survivor season 34, Game Changers, is off to a fantastic start! As Andrea noted, the stakes are indeed high, especially for the most notorious players. Were you surprised by the results from the first two tribal councils? Do you think they made the best choices? How did your assessment of the castaways change once you saw them in action? Who do you think is playing the best, and who is in jeopardy of being voted out before the merge? Who impressed you the most? Who would you have kept? How do you think the shuffle will impact the game? Who do you think will be next to go? Here are the tribes after episode 1. Andrea Waltz : Go For No! Hello, and welcome back! How are things with you? I hope you’re well and enjoying some nice, warm weather, wherever you are. On this week’s episode of Women Rocking Wall Street, I have the pleasure of chatting with Andrea Waltz, co-author of the best-selling book “Go For No! Yes is the Destination, No is How You Get There.” Andrea wrote the book with Richard Fenton, and together they own Courage Crafters Inc. Today she’ll teach us all about the Go For No concept, which is based around letting go of the fear of rejection. Whether you are going for a raise or trying to get a new client, you’ll never hear a yes unless you conquer the fear of hearing no. In fact, when you overcome this fear of no, the yeses that you do receive will likely be grander in scale. It may seem strange to intentionally increase your failure rate, but in reality, it’s a sign that you’re really putting yourself out there and taking chances! I encourage all of you to try hearing no for even just a week. Once you’ve gotten used to the idea, work your way up to a 30-day challenge. As Andrea says, practicing Go For No can be as simple as asking the restaurant waiter if you can move to another table closer to the window. See how many nos you can collect! Imagine what your professional and personal life would look like if you decided to take a chance each day and put yourself out there. Think about how it would feel to embrace rejection with open arms and recognize it as a sign that you’re on the verge of something courageous and bold. Here’s a preview of the five levels of failure, which Andrea explains on this episode: the ability to fail the willingness to fail the “wantingness” to fail failing bigger and faster failing exponentially I hope you enjoy Andrea’s insights and they inspire you to face your fear of failure! To learn more about Go For No, visit Andrea and Richard’s website, or the book link on Amazon. Tune in next week when I invite guest Maureen Adolf to the show. Have a wonderful week!
