Today, I speak with IFBB Pro Daniela Burrola Reyes, who works as a registered nurse, She competed first NPC show in 2018. She earned earned her Pro Card after taking a break in 2020 and started her own resistance band company called Strong Pompis. She seeks to inspire people through her competitive journey as a shorter competitor (she's only 4'11”!) She finds discipline and strength through bodybuilding. Daniela thought it would take her a long time to turn pro because she heard so many other competitors say it took them multiple national shows to earn their pro card. Once she stepped on stage with the belief that she could turn pro, she did at her second national show. Daniela talks about the important lessons she learned that helped her turn pro so quickly. She talks about not telling anyone she was going to compete at her second national show because she didn't want to hear everyone's opinion about her decision to compete. Daniela experienced much less stress not having to deal with naysayers. Daniela shares her experience with feeling like she need to eat everything post-show and how her honesty with her coach helped her over come that feeling. She used her knowledge as a nurse to know the changes she was experiencing were detrimental to her body, which gave her the motivation to get back on track. She regularly checks her labs to make sure she is staying healthy. In our interview, Daniela offers excellent advice for competitors. DO NOT miss what she has to say! Nina King is entering her first year as Vice President and Athletic Director at Duke University after serving as a senior-level administrator for 13 years. After giving an institutional profile of Duke, King shares her thoughts on what it is like moving from a position of input to a position of decision-making. She shares her honest initial reaction to Coach K's retirement announcement, philosophy on succession planning, and gives a look at what Duke has been doing behind-the-scenes to be prepared for this moment. As an internal hire, Smith asked how that experience will help shape her own senior-level team. King also shares her thoughts on what it was like being a Chief of Staff for previous VP/AP Dr. Kevin White, strategy behind her new Chief of Staff, and gives advice to current or future athletic directors that might be wondering what skillsets and responsibilities a chief role should have. King has and will continue to teach a sports business class in the MBA program at Duke with Dr. Kevin White each semester. She discusses the importance of that classroom experience to her as both an accountant and lawyer, and provides some insight into the syllabus and guest speakers. King, Chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee last year and again this year, shares her honest opinion on gender inequities at last year's tournament and her thoughts on the future of the tournament with the continued success and quality competition in women's basketball. 0:00 Introductions 0:20 Institutional Profile of Duke 4:00 Position of Input to Decision-Making 7:04 Coach K Retirement & Succession Planning 14:07 Adjusting Senior-level Roles after Internal AD Hire 17:17 Chief of Staff Position 25:13 Law School 29:20 Professor King Teaches Sports Business at Duke MBA 34:01 Chair of Women's Basketball Committee

The introduction of new roles is not new to general practice, particularly right now, but with the relatively short timeframe that practices have had to adjust to the changes and the challenges following the introduction of the PCNs, it is not surprising that those working in the PCN Manager roles can find it difficult to integrate and engage with local staff. For Practice Managers who have long been used to the autonomy of leading their individual areas and juggling competing demands, the arrival of another manager and entrusting that they can prioritise their practice's needs can be of concern. In our latest Practice Index / Ockham podcast series, we explore this theme with our resident Practice Management leads, Nicola Davies, and Robyn Clark, and with two experienced PCN Managers, Julie Damon and Tara Humphrey who share their experiences to date. The panel are all in agreement that the Practice Manager / PCN Manager relationship can and should work in harmony, but how can this happen and what can those who are struggling on both sides right now do to improve confidence and maximise the ability to deliver?   Introductions (39 secs) Julie says hello (1 min 2 secs) Reintroducing Tara (1 min 31 secs) Robyn's relationship with her PCN Manager (2 mins 9 secs) Nicola's network (2 mins 43 secs) Julie's experiences of working alongside the Practice Managers in her area (3 mins 23 secs) Building trust with existing practice staff (4 mins 8 secs) Why keeping in touch is so important (5 mins 13 secs) The challenges Tara has faced in the past (5 mins 44 secs) What made things tough? September is Suicide Awareness Month. The topics contained in my show notes and this episode are difficult to hear and process. Please have support with you or readily available if suicide, sexual assault or depression are a trigger for you.Death is a difficult topic to discuss. When a death occurs due to suicide, our society is quick to shush up and sweep the conversation under the proverbial carpet. After my father, William L Corporon MD and my oldest son, Reat Griffin Underwood were murdered in April 2014, I found myself talking about death, daily. While uncomfortable for many I learned how to carry on the conversation, especially after mentioning the tragic murders that took their lives and that of Teresa LaManno. Then a strange phenomenon began to occur. Families who lost their loved ones to suicide began to find me. Introductions were made and I found myself in conversation with moms and dads who had also lost their precious children. In Episode 30, “Saving Our Children from Suicide” Kevin and Annie Timmons share their story of losing Nick Timmons after battling depression. On more than a few occasions these parents would tell me through the pain in their souls and tear-filled eyes that somehow my situation was different from theirs. Their intention was clear...I lost my son to murder and they lost their child to suicide. It is true, the cause of death was different. It is true, our children are no longer with us.However, considering how I would respond with grace and love and in a respectful manner was most important to me.After processing how we each lost our children, the reality is our child is dead and we are now lost without them and in need of repairing ourselves. This bears repeating and often - the pain of a parent can create a passion stronger than a tsunami.Meet my friend, Jan Marrs. In Episode 38, “Sexual Assault, Mental Health, Suicide and LOVE”, Jan is who I have always known her to be, HONEST. She shares the details of how her beloved Lane lived through a sexual assault and found herself in depression that didn't present as expected. An intelligent, cheerful and active young woman in school, Lane didn't shy away from these attributes, she pushed into them, with force. When her friends and family noticed a change in her psychosis above and beyond her triple-booked activity and academic schedule, professional care was obtained.Jan and Jeff Marrs took all the right steps. Lane was under professional care in Kansas and then in Fayetteville, Arkansas as she entered her freshman year of college. None of them realized, including Lane, how fragile she was when the stress of academics and social life are mixed with taking prescription medications improperly.Lane took her life on September 16, 2016, the darkest day in the lives of the Marrs family. The quick spiral into her dark depression was uncovered by her parents after interviewing her friends and following Lane's actions over a period of only a few days. The incredible support from friends appeared immediately, showering Jan and her family with love and kindness. It takes courageous kindness to show up for a family who lost their child to suicide. While we might not know what to say and we don't want to add to what is likely a layer of shame and doubt in their minds, we are still needed for hand holding and hugging or toilet paper. You will be inspired to hear Jan speak of how she gathered her strength from the love Lane left her and joined a foundation to help other parents in her same situation, parenting a child with a mental illness. Founded by the Arkin and Doss families in 2015, The Speak Up Foundation aims to help teens and their families feel safe to talk about mental health and signs of suicide. Funds raised during their annual walk in September assist with providing Sources of Strength to all levels of schools.Jan offers us crucial advice about speaking with our children and their friends, having a full wheel of support around our children and asking great questions to stay in the know with our teenagers. This is not an episode to enjoy. This is a conversation created with love and offered to you as a resource for your personal wheel of support. To fill Jan's heart, we request you sign up for the annual Speak UP walk to be held on September 19, 2021. Today, I speak with IFBB Pro Kiki McClellan, coach for Team Boss Bodies. She earned her Pro card at NPC Nationals in 2020 after a long pandemic prep! Prior to bodybuilding, she was a competitive cheerleader and dancer. She credits this past experience with her comfort on stage. Kiki talks about how she utilizes her education in her coaching career to help women bring their best to the stage. Her first experience with a coach really opened her eyes to what NOT to do during a prep. Through her 2020 prep, Kiki found the confidence and belief in herself that she could turn Pro. She was reluctant to broadcast her goals because she was afraid of what people would think if she failed. She believes the isolation she experienced in 2020 allowed her to put her head down and grind to reach her goal. Once she decided to make the jump to the National circuit, Kiki didn't want to leave anything to chance or have any thoughts of “what if” during her prep. Kiki tells us how her goals have changed over time and how her path has taken her to places she never expected!   Kiki has so much knowledge to share! Life of the School Podcast: The Podcast for Biology Teachers

In this episode, Lee and I have an informal chat about the end of summer and the start of the school year on the two very different planets we live on (Massachusetts and Texas). We will do our best to avoid political landmines… let's see how this goes. Show Notes: How do you feel getting the school year started? Lee: Cautiously excited. I'm ready to meet kids, do some science with them, and help them love learning. I'm ready to try ungrading with my IB class. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't anxious about starting school in an environment where masks cannot be mandated per governor's orders. I also can't distance my kids as we are being made to seat kids in groups of 4–my district drank the Kagan strategies koolaid over the summer, and we are expected to use the training we got. Aaron: Feels like a bit of a black box What are some of your “getting to know you” activities that you use with students? Lee: I'm having kids create a Flipgrid to teach me how to pronounce their names, and we are doing an activity with Oreos--Do Double Stuf Oreos Have Double the “Stuf?” Aaron: I'm going to use Flipgrid for Introductions and I'm writing something up using Algae Research Supply as a hook for one of my first units. Any Ideas for podcast discussions we should have in the coming school year? IEPs, 504s and accomodations How to teach Self-Efficacy How to collaboratively plan with colleagues Designing revision into your curriculum How do you teach cross curricular classes? From lipsticks to hair care to bath and body -- there's little to nothing that the average shopper cannot find that covers all beauty and personal care needs. And what's more, the shopper can browse through multiple brands within the same unified platform. It is to talk about this vision that I am joined today by Prashanth Prakash, senior partner at Accel and the man behind the glam himself -- Darpan Sanghvi, CEO and co-founder of MyGlamm, India's fastest growing direct-to-consumer beauty brand. MyGlamm is one of our more recent investments in the beauty and personal care (BPC) segments that has seen tremendous success with its house of brands model and direct-to-consumer (D2C) business approach. It was enervating to hear Darpan's unique take on the growing BPC market from an entrepreneurial perspective, along with Prashanth's keen and experienced insights into the burgeoning business. In this episode we discussed everything from MyGlamm's journey, building a scalable beauty company using technology, the challenges and opportunities of the Indian market, tackling the COVID-19 crisis, leveraging social media, creating a data engine, and more -- all while keeping an eye on the offline sales game as well. 0:00 to  - 6:25: Introductions and beginnings! Darpan isn't your average CEO, and MyGlamm wasn't born without some serious on-ground work that began with a keen interest in brands, and a never-say-never attitude. 6:30 to 10:51: Prashanth's thoughts on the brand space with specific insight into BPC, and what is unique about the sector. 10:53 to 20:45: How Darpan navigated this space from an entrepreneur point of view. How did Darpan decide what product to launch with?20:50 to 24:00: Prashanth gives us the investor perspective. 24:03 to 27:51: What are the challenges and advantages that startups face in this segment, when they come up against the goliath brands that have been around for longer. 27:52 to 30:40: Darpan tells us how he learnt from the foundations of the business, and in the BPC space the challenges that exist, are actually opportunities in disguise. 30:35 to 31:45: Prashanth on how brands and businesses have to look to survive. How they must leverage the offline muscle that they built, to stay relevant in digital times. 31:5o to 34:47: Does Darpan believe in the offline sales concept as well? How does it apply to his D2C brand and platform? 34:50 to 39:20: The impact that COVID-19 has had on this industry and the surprises that came along with it! 39:22 to 46:55 : Internet penetration in India has been far more successful and higher than the BPC penetration. What does this mean for aspiring companies in this space? 47:00 to 55:34 - What does the future hold for BPC brands as well as the broader D2C segment. Our experts have predictions, aspirations, and hope for the future.  Check out other episodes from the Insights Podcast series at https://www.seedtoscale.comShare your feedback and suggestions at https://www.twitter.com/Accel_India

It has been several years since we did our host/driver introductions and we thought we'd update our newer listeners with a bit of background from each of our hosts.   Alan joined our team about 2 minutes after Vicki posted something about our first race.  He has been a car guy since birth and is a trained mechanic and worked on real cars for several years prior to joining our team.  Alan has succeeded in getting all four of his immediate family to race with us, as well as his brother.  He has adopted the SpiderStang and is in the midst of preparing it for our upcoming race in Thompson CT.  We cannot wait to see it back on track. If we missed something that you wanted to know, please let us know on our website or Instagram or Facebook. We have had several requests recently to break the episodes up by segment so the original interview will be coming along separately as well as the next Dominating with Dawson as a solo episode.  You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc. Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, under shows and click on the podcast you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/AlanReIntroduction     We hope you enjoy this episode! PS  Please don't forget that if you are looking to add an Apex Pro to your driving telemetry system, don't forget to use our discount code for all Apex Pro systems you will receive a free Windshield Suction Cup Mount for the system, a savings of $40.  Just enter the code “ghitlikesapex!” when you order.  They are a great system and truly invaluable in safely increasing your speed on track and/or autocross etc.  The recently released second generation systems and app increases the capability of the system greatly.
