Sometimes seeking a deeper understanding of ourselves leads to more struggle or strife. In fact, it usually does.  But questioning, doubting, wondering and judging, (while not super satisfying), are really the very touchstones we must work with in order to self explore.  My guest Andrea Catherine is hooked on personal growth. She loves to navigate the murkiness of her emotional and physical experience, and help her clients do the same.  Of course, this is a conversation that has to involve Pluto right? Andrea Catherine introduced me to (https://amzn.to/2FxjQPt) (https://amzn.to/2FxjQPt) something I’m super passionate about and learning about. She blogs at this place called (https://food52.com/users/78236-lindsay-jean-hard) , which I love reading and I get their emails it’s always exciting! I was just reading somewhere about broccoli stems were even more nutritious then the florets maybe we’re gonna learn more about nutrition too! Well, i don’t necessarily have a nutrition background but there is a lot to be said as far as nutrients and great things in the peels and things that we tend to discard a lot! There’s benefits to not throwing our scraps away!  Oh year I was loving he sugar peels looked awesome because I’m always trying to get more fruit and fiber in my diet and I think there’s a lot of fiber in the peel right? Tell us a little about yourself. My path to where I am now has been an interesting one Like you said I got my masters in (https://taubmancollege.umich.edu/urbanplanning/degrees/master-urban-and-regional-planning) , Ann Arbor. I worked for our local downtown development authority for a couple of years, so that was a solid 2 years to put masters to good use. Then my husband and I moved to Japan.  The intersection of cooking and writing. We joined a CSA when we were there where we would walk down the street to the local grocery store and pick up a box of vegetables. CSA learning process every week walking into the store to ask what is in my box That’s where I first started thinking about cooking with scraps because I knew these farmers taking this time and energy to grow. putting it all to great use friends of ours from college told us they were going to start (https://blog.realtimefarms.com/) resource to find farmers near them and learn about their growing practices and connect with restaurants and see where those restaurants were sourcing their ingredients from It was a really exciting time to be working for a start up We were acquired by (https://food52.com/users/78236-lindsay-jean-hard) It’s a food and lifestyle website. I worked for them for 6 years community management started Food52 Facebook Cookbook club (https://www.facebook.com/groups/food52cookbookclub/) Food52 Facebook Baking Club (https://www.facebook.com/groups/food52bakingclub/) I wrote a lot and one of my columns was cooking with scraps (https://food52.com/tags/cooking-with-scraps) community based so I would hunt for recipes that people shared that found other use for scraps. (https://food52.com/users/78236-lindsay-jean-hard) wanted to share that with a broader audience that’s where this cookbook came from.  Wow sounds almost like a real life Julie and Julia and right along with the ups and downs. My mom just made this delicious stock out of the scraps of our carrot peels etc.  it was so fun! We had found a cute tiny grocery store we found on a preview trip to find an apartment. One of my husband’s colleagues introduced us to the owner and let him know we were gonna be there and would appreciate friendly faces! I was shopping there and I saw these vegetables but I knew I didn’t have enough language skills to get signed up for CSA. They did have other produce. Some of the things I really learned to love but others just never resinated with me Yamaimo  Japanese Mountain Yam it was a mountain yam and it was really slimy when you grate it and something I could not get past the texture so I would sneak it into other people’s boxes. The owner of the store just about fell over laughing, he said if there’s something you don’t want just tell us if you don’t like it! There were a lot of different greens that I hadn’t been exposed to and then learned to love variations of bok choi imuzuma lotus root... Support this podcast

(https://www.groundedhere.com/) I’m so excited because is gonna energize us and it’s Sunday January 6th and I just talked with Lindsey Jean Hard yesterday who wrote the book Cooking With Scraps! (https://amzn.to/2FxjQPt) (https://amzn.to/2FxjQPt) Hi everyone! I’m glad you got a chance to talk to (https://www.groundedhere.com/podcast-2) and it was really valuable. I have the cookbook in hand! Today, I want to share what I am up to in this transition the holidays I’ve been making things like polenta And craving cooling herbs mint cilantro coconut! Shredded coconut and coconut milk recognizing my body’s wanting to cool off from the inflammatory foods of the holidays! IDK if anyone is experiencing that. I can totally relate except in a different sense. I was really good during the holidays, it’s more of an after the holidays problem. I went home, had a great  holiday with my family! I hadn’t been the four of us, my parents and my brother and I, and especially with my brother and I and just thankful to soak up all of that love! And maybe a little more gluten and sugar then I normally eat my body was really feeling that for a while I got home still wanted nourishing foods I had this Wicked Good Farm (http://thewickedgoodfarm.com/) polenta! (http://thewickedgoodfarm.com/product/painted-mountain-corn-flour/) Last night we had friends over, and so I put a whole chicken in a crock pot chicken had been with tomatoes onions peppers put that over polenta! We also made polenta fries! I’m happy to tell how to make those things using organic cornmeal and having something different then just flour is really nice! I feel like I get that nourishment without getting inundated with sweet things! How do you make polenta fries? I just saw something on Facebook about vegan quinoa nuggets! (https://veganheaven.org/recipe/vegan-chicken-nuggets/) There was a restaurant in Ann Arbor that had really good polenta fries! I think it was Grizzly Peak Brewing Company. Make polenta like you would 1 cup fine to medium cornmeal to 4 cups of water you can add: butter and cheese skip that use coconut oil spices whatever works for you after the polenta is made it’s a sweet slow cooking process I enjoy that after it’s done you can spread it on a cookie sheet so it’s an inch or 1/2 inch thick, thinner if you want let it cool, then once it’s cool, I put in fridge over night Then slice it like french fries cookie sheet in our oven, it broke this week so we weren’t able to do them fully in the oven Just make sure there’s enough oil in the pan! It doesn’t have to be deep fried oven fries fry sauce so many different recipes and ways to make fry sauce. Ours had a pickle brine in it.  I want to keep experimenting but I think you need tomasa for that? I have a lot of cornmeal so I guess I’ll do a lot of polenta or some grits. I never made polenta you made it sound easy! It thickens up quick. That’s good to know cause polenta’s not cheap.  Yes and cornmeal is less expensive. You know Brooke Bohannon she sells it every week  order in the valley looking for a local source here in Montana I have a whole big ceramic jar blue cornmeal yellow have some fun with it I’d like to make some corn chips, although I am trying to not have chips food more wet food over the dry processed food Mike made me homemade whole wheat tortillas and they were so good! I’m not sure how good they are for me, they are kind of on that dry side. I was telling my mom, I put salsa on just about everything, I try to find ones that don’t have extra sugars. That’s probably on the  wet side. impacts and qualities what has your... Support this podcast

(https://www.groundedhere.com/) I’m gonna talk about 3 things The seasons and what’s going on for me and my body has this desire to cleanse, but it’s just not the right time because it’s holidays!  It’s frustrating every time I eat sugar my body’s like no and alcohol and I do it because it’s the holiday season! talking about that and how to manage that lots of squash everything I can with acorn squash very simple slice the acorn squash in half  bake it to make it super soft while that’s roasting sauce a bunch of root vegetables beets onion chickpeas that I marinated in a soy sauce made this filling basically added bacon and spinach to it the second time I added raisins as well It was just a really hearty meal served in the squash half really creative way to at the end of the CSA what do I do with it. I wanted to share that what was the 3rd thing using a lot of cookbooks (https://amzn.to/2SE2NyO) Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and Diet Dictocrats (https://amzn.to/2EaOgqf) (https://amzn.to/2Pvghe6) (https://amzn.to/2QLghLu) (https://amzn.to/2Qolqda) (https://amzn.to/2Qolqda) my friend Lindsay-Jean’s, I interviewed her on the podcast her book is all about food waste recipes I reached out to Mollie Katzen from the Moosewood  Those are my favorite cookbooks! I do, what I made out of the Moosewood yesterday was this recipe for Chilean Squash that has peppers and corn and cheese and eggs and lots and lots of pumpkin!  The other thing I get out of the (https://amzn.to/2Pvghe6) is her quiche crust, I use that for quiche or pie or anything. The Playdough Master I don’t do well with doubling recipes, I can double the playdough recipe, but I have to constantly make double batches.  I found an old copy of her book at a garage sale or thrift store. That’s what I was looking at this fall.  I changed it up a bit like I didn’t use tofu chickpeas Using it as inspiration because I have been more attracted to following a recipe I think it is maybe because I think this season of such intense change that I’m  craving stability and almost instruction simplicity of being able to follow something, instead of everything being self-generated all of the time! It takes a lot of energy! I have up-teem business ideas!  I love being creative! I start things and love doing things! This season has been about grounding connecting restoring my energy I think that’s why I’ve been cookbooks When’s your birthday? October 26 just turned 34 about a month and a half ago! When’s your birthday Jackie? I’m 1000% Leo, I was born in the middle of the summer of love on July 31, 1967 in the middle of NYC. I feel like I’m on a rollercoaster for folks who do being really focused seasonal change life just constantly changing really sensitive not being over stimulated almost hardly on social media this fall at all little time online unless I’m checking my email remove myself from that over stimulus Less of the Roller Coaster Feel a lot of intention tune into the channel of life Intro?! Andrea Catherine is here to give us a little self-love! Were both looking out over a little bit of snow! I’l start with the seasons shared a little bit settling and reducing stimuli having a lot of change, moving, illness, my family visited, started a new job in August A lot of really good things! Requiring a lot of energy. I’ve been subconsiously finding ways to just be without as much input enjoy what is already here What that meant for me is it meant:... Support this podcast

Tuesday • September 4, 2018 and Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor Andrea Catherine is here to share with us her new ingredient KAMUT® flour and a recipe for Pesto. What’s cooking? (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) (https://www.groundedhere.com/fearless-self-love-retreats) (https://www.groundedhere.com/fearless-self-love-retreats) Considering we have been connected since March it’s not that many episodes we put out because we’ve both been busy! Our CSA is winding down, I think my last pick up is October 2nd I got something I have never used before! That is a rare thing for me, usually I am like I know what to do with this, and I feel a sense of pride in knowing! Cause I know a lot of people don’t know what to do with what they get in their Farm Share. (https://www.kamut.com/) We got KAMUT®, the grain, it’s a form of wheat. Idk if I am actually saying it right. The word itself is formed from the Egyptian for wheat, it’s a form of wheat. It’s a wheat berry. We got it ground up. I’m thinking of using it to make scones pancakes bread soup Time for warmer foods, last night we roasted a bunch of vegetables. I have been wanting to make homemade pizza! So I was thinking of making pizza dough in the next few weeks. So that is my homework, it’s my homework. (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/77-quinn-organic-farms/) Can I say something. So I want to say KAMUT®is a registered trademark wheat that (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/77-quinn-organic-farms/) grows over on the East Side. He is an international business, it’s grown organically, and people who have a gluten allergy, tend to be able to eat it, the allergy has to do with the way it’s processed and not the gluten itself. And he is like the leader in the world for selling this and his biggest customers are pasta makers in Italy. He goes to Italy every year. I so want to write children’s book about him, I loved his interview and I have wanted to find out how we can grow that? So Brooke must be growing it in Whitefish? I think she milled it. Cool, homemade Pizza Dough, I have an awesome Pizza dough recipe I could share with you. I’m gonna pull up her email, Yes he did trademark it, here’s her email: ~ This week the full and half shares will be receiving a bag of Kamut flour. KAMUT® khorasan wheat is an ancient wheat, guaranteed under the KAMUT® brand to be always grown certified organic, never hybridized or genetically modified and is prized for its nutrition, ease of digestibility, sweet nutty-buttery taste and firm texture. Compared to most modern wheat it has more protein, amino acids, vitamins and many minerals, especially selenium, zinc and magnesium. Khorasan is a variety of wheat and thus has gluten. However, many people with sensitivities to modern wheat report being able to eat KAMUT® khorasan wheat with no difficulty. (see Gluten Intolerances below) Most likely originating in Mesopotamia, legends exist of this grain being found in Egyptian tombs. However, there is no archeological evidence to substantiate this. Farmers in Turkey call the grain “Camel’s Tooth” because of its shape or the “Prophet’s Wheat”, referring to another legend that Noah brought the grain with him on the ark.   ~ Gluten intolerances This is what I want to clarify, people who have celiac are still going to have a reaction, but people who have gluten intolerances, it’s a little different then an allergy. If they have a reaction that is not celiac they may be able to process it, just to be really clear. (https://www.facebook.com/bobquinnorganicfarmer/?ref=br_rs) I know (https://www.facebook.com/bobquinnorganicfarmer/?ref=br_rs) , has been posting on social media much more then he has and I think I just replayed that not long ago.  I look forward to looking it up! That’s my homework ~ learning Support this podcast

(https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) (https://www.groundedhere.com/fearless-self-love-retreats) (https://www.groundedhere.com/fearless-self-love-retreats) Summer Corn Skillet Dish Happy Mid-to-Late Summer! Lots of fires around us which is pretty heartbreaking. It’s awful! But they actually mentioned climate this morning on (https://www.democracynow.org/2018/8/14/historic_ruling_against_monsanto_finds_company) They were talking about on the news. Glyphosate, yeah, they’re paying 289$ million Let’s talk about some non-gmo food which is kind of fitting because the dish I want to talk about it corn based. I love corn on the cob. And a friend of mine said you really are from the midwest well, I like corn-on-the-cob, and I grew up being able to have it and now it’s so hard to find organic fresh corn! I got some in my CSA this week, to make other then just grilling corn on the cob The new owners of Swift Creek, do this amazing corn-on-the-cob at the farmer’s market.  It’s like $3 an ear of corn with all these spices and cheese! It’s so good and so simple! What I did is I take the corn on the cob and cut off the kernels cook it slowly in a skillet One of my favorite meals to cook in the summer when its not hot yesterday was the perfect day Everything from my CSA zucchini Hungarian hot wax peppers peppers onions garlic tomatoes And some spices cumin corriander turmeric ginger salt and pepper long slow stirring process on a low to medium heat carmelizes and gets so sweet add a little more olive oil vinegar Bragg’s amino acids It’s kind of a meditative process, moving my arm in a stirring motion peaceful cooking slowly  not in the slow food tradition, not a two day process attentive process Added in a little bit of goat cheese stirred in all I really needed for my supper You could add something like black beans or roasted chicken Really just these slow cooked veggies on the skillet and the corn adds this sweet carmely flavor corn skillet not corn bread and a stir fry heartier element As we shift towards fall we start to make heartier foods I was walking my dog in the alley behind my house, there’s a shed, and there were vines with 3 clusters of bright red flowers I thought here comes fall! digestive systems are starting to shift apples are gonna come in We will start crave some of these foods that are more nourishing and grounding There’s always change, we seem to only notice big seasonal changes. Things are always changing.  What does that indicate to us?  How are we shifting now? I used to have a recipe like that where I stuffed tomatoes with corn, that was delicious. I’m fascinated that someone said Corn-On-The-Cob was a midwest thing I thought everyone loved corn-on-the-cob. I thought it was a traditional thing as American as red, white and blue. I love cutting the kernels off the cob and eating those strips. Yum! When do you do that? I generally just boil my corn. And then cut them off whatever I’m putting away for the next day. We’ve finally had some food. I posted on Instagram we finally ate some of his potatoes. His poor grandson came up to have carrots and we didn’t have hardly any.  Have you ever overwintered carrots? That’s what I was thinking we should put some in now. He’s got big bales of hay he could put over them, so they would maybe take off in the spring. Does he pickle them? No, he just cans them, our three big veggies are potatoes, carrots and green beans. We don’t get near enough for... Support this podcast

The two things that were the biggest hits with everyone! (http://ravenwoodolc.org/) Ravenwood Outdoor Learning Center (http://ravenwoodolc.org/)  run by Brett Holmquist! You know him?! He’s been a dear friend I tried to take our kids there last year, but they fill up fast, you have to book it like now in September! There were two overnight camps ages 10-12 13-16 kids I am not with them when I am cooking. Relationships between each other, themselves kids all sleep in tepees outside stayed in a camper last year I commuted Both weeks I made both of these dishes I made a big pot of chili, but you can figure out how to make chili in the woods But I made a Campfire Skillet Cornbread (https://www.freshoffthegrid.com/campfire-skillet-cornbread/) never made cornbread on a skillet before turned out so well huge hit burners get pretty hot temperature flip the cornbread was a little complicated cook the cornbread put a lid on it freshoffthegrid.com (http://freshoffthegrid.com) honey in it jalapèno pepper doubled it gluten free in addition to the cornmeal turned out amazing! cornmeal flour baking powder salt milk/ powder milk (if you’re in the back country for a while – ratio 3 tablespoons of powder milk olive oil honey! coconut oil or olive oil they recommend propane fire There is a fire ban in our area of Montana right now so you might have to do it over a propane stove as well. I love this, I’ve made a lot of cornbread in a skillet, and I always put it in the oven, I am curious how you flipped it! such a hit cooked enough burners were so hot regulate the temp better got a spatula oil to clear the edges I put a cookie sheet over the top to flip the whole thing and then slid it back into  the skillet I’m thinking what happened is I doubled the recipe. I didn’t have the images in the woods thinner cooked through was not as thick thicker cornbread If you follow the recipe it, I guess is will work just fine I doubled everything … the ratios are great! imagery what I did was I printed the recipes cause I didn’t have wifi… I think I would have downloaded the pics and recipes… I go crazy because I find my ipad/phone is always closing and then I have to enter my password with my sticking fingers… You can set your phone much better cooking for 20 people doing it in the hottest part of the day dinner was between 6 & 7 at night… muggy Michigan hot and dry lots of wasps and Yellowjackets balled faced hornets eating the yellow jackets It was a definitely great place to be! The cornbread was a hit! I actually looked up this ribbon zucchini lasagna thing I made it differently so I might not even share that recipe, I’ll tell you what I did Making zucchini into ribbons doesn’t work but I  sliced the zucchini 1/4 inch think a lot of zucchini for 20 people We had this big cast iron griddle Where I was able to cook the zucchini which you could do in a cast iron skillet. And I put up 3 episodes of my friend Marisa cooking and today Andrea Catherine is here! Great to be here! IT’s been an interesting season for me. I’ve been going through lots of change especially with my work situation ~ I realized last night I made a real meal that wasn’t just fried eggs, toast with sautéd vegetables and mushrooms.  So if there are listening who feel stuck but who haven’t cooked and get into that judgy place, I do too.  normally cooking is my go to my go to, and savior for me, so I know that I’ve been in a hard spot refreshing to make a warm meal: lentils rice cabbage I shared last time It was really good so I feel like this is an invitation to comeback anyone who feels like they are in that stalling place Summertime I think that it is because it’s summertime, in Montana things are kind of different in Montana in the summer because we have those long days, so its almost like thre is a whole day after work, and also it gets really hot!  Plus we’re kind of in that in between phase where there is not much ready besides green, we’re just waiting for carrots, and beets etc. Absolutely I know for me, I get absorbed into summer mode then I’m hungry really It’s just finished definitely not the time of year it is. Greens last time we talked about cabbage, I mentioned Napa Cabbage which is an Asian green. Sometimes I find that these vegetables I did not have growing up as a kid are the most delicious and satisfying. In addition to Napa Cabbage,  bok choy tat soi are ones I love. Tat Soi It’s very similar like any leafy greens lots of vitamin C immune system eyes and skin nourish things that can get overheated eyes and skin what I love about it It’s easy to eat raw or cooked Bok Choy the stems are thicker and I am less likely to peel one off and eat it raw Some people listening might be like who is this? If you hang out with a lot of a farmers!  I would go to these  farmer gatherings and these people would work so hard You would think they are gonna have meat and heavier vegetables on their plate and you get on line and they have a plate of greens! Appreciation for greens! late night tired greens salads are perfect this time of year give us a lot of what we need salads Tat Soi cooking cook like bok choy share a recipe Margaret Beck who is working with me spicy thai tat soi kick do it this way You can always change the spices cooking tip I love often I look at the recipe as the skeleton or framework that gives me the idea except for like lentils and pasta Wait, wait, because you mentioned that like two times, lentils and pasta is like an Italian meal, what did you do cook them in the same water? I guess I just need the right recipe french lentils IDK what kind of pasta macaroni IDK, everything was overcooked and mushy I need a little lesson in Italian cooking, but for me it was a bad experience… Jackie had to get the timer for Mike’s Birthday Cake. Is Tat Soi, a green? Like a lettuce? I thought it came in spring mix. by itself it looks like a mini – bok choi lighter lighter and a little crisper spicy thai topping for your tat so share it I think what happens in the summer Fourth of July birthdays gatherings eat a lot of  spicy food that doesn’t always pair with our digestive system in a gentle way not a mustard green or bitter green adding water element naturally without being  pungent I like the idea of having spicy but having this  cooling element in... (https://www.groundedhere.com/podcast) What kind of dog is he? He’s a rescue dog! I just like the fact that he’s a rescue dog, those are my favorites! The first time I lived with a Pitt Bull, I thought IDK, the lady I lived with was like you’ll love her. I was like idk. and she was like the most loveable dog. What’s his name? Porter, but not just any Porter. Edmond Fitzgerald Porter Great Lakes Brewing Beer  I know that song, isn’t it Gordon Lightfoot. This student in my class who they say is dyslexic, IDK, but we’ve been singing a lot lately because that’s a good thing for him.  OK, Ill have to check it out and Walter Mitty. The new Walter Mitty movie with Ben Stiller is amazing! I started doing ten minute shows I’m interviewing an astrologer once a month We’re talking about Taurus and Spring inspiring me to expand my horizons too. The fist one we just did yesterday. I did 3 tips to boost your metabolism, so I am calling them Love your Monday. It’ll be good to have a little bit extra. Long form will come back, June 1st. This month I talked with Elsie Escobar (http://elsieescobar.com/) ! It was a great conversation and vulnerable in some ways. It will be great to share her episode. It was fantastic! I’m eager to share it! That’s been my problem lately. I’ve been struggling to download shows and listen when I am without a signal. Which is most of the time! So, Still Spring! You can get things like arugula at the Farmer’s Market. Did you go to the Farmer’s Market? Kalispell Farmer’s Market Not because I forgot. I was working, teaching yoga closes at noon and I got home at one. I going out of town so I won’t go this weekend either and after that I should be making it a habit, I might have to shift to going to a different market. Kalispell on Saturday is not the most convenient market. My favorite place to be is Thursday night at the Columbia Falls Market! Let’s meet there! It is so much fun! Should be starting soon. Like a townie party! Live music! There’s always a brewery or a distillery that sponsors it! It starts this Thursday… On the 17th Im there as much as I can be in the summer!  Dodgy Mountain men are playing on June 7th! I like to look at who’s playing the music. I run into it a lot on a Thursday night! I love that market better then Kalispell, Whitefish hands down. You should check out the Eureka one.  It’s on Wednesday nights but there’s music. There’s not a lot of vegetables. (https://www.simplyjosephine.com/) My friend Dacia (https://www.simplyjosephine.com/) has her stand with aprons and with her soaps and things. The people who do the Two Bear Farm, Todd and Rebecca. There’s some new vendors you can buy some things. Huckleberries. Not morels, there’s gonna be a lot of morels, people picking like crazy. There’s some vegetables. I don’t usually go to the Eureka one. Last year I went once, we didn’t have a lot of things, maybe we’ll have flowers this year.  I planted some on Earth Day! OK So! Arugula at the Farmer’s Market I like to make a salad with some bitter greens last of the root vegetables I’ve got! carrots cucumbers I know they’re not a root vegetable and they probably aren’t local I’m telling you about this salad my favorite way to cut vegetables isn’t a way you think of doing it. I realized today that maybe my favorite kitchen tool for salads?!  A vegetable peeler! I like to peel my carrots that way they become these little spirals did that with the carrots...     "There is no one straight path" This nugget of insight seems to be a recurring theme throughout the conversations that I have with my marvelous guests.  Their paths are colorfully weaved with discovery and changes.  For the most part, their stories don't follow a linear trajectory.  In fact, it's the dynamic quality that brings so much inspiration and aliveness! Restaurant owner turned yoga teacher, engineer turned yoga studio owner, law professional turned shaman.... I think what's so alluring about these stories is that these people stopped to ask themselves somewhere along the way "what do I truly want in life?" and then mustered the courage to try and figure it out!  "What do I truly want in life?" and "How can I be happy?" are questions that we eventually ponder.  Growing up, we're taught to pave our lives out in one straight path and to fear the unknown, but the heart desires truth and purpose, and those things might not be on the pretty paved road.  That's why stories of daring leaps perk us up. With the last few interviews, there seems to be another layer emerging. That is:  "What you desire can change." Ah yes, life likes to keep it exciting doesn't it!  Just when we think we've figured it all out, the tides turn.  The key is to continue tuning in and pivoting as needed. In this episode, we get to hear about just that as Andrea Catherine opens up candidly about her next leap in life.  Andrea is currently a yoga teacher, yoga health coach, Ayurvedic health counsellor and host of the podcast, Fearless Self Love.  Her new calling is calling though and she's in flux to move toward her dream of creating a space that's a destination for travelers, locals and folks in transition.  We also talk about self-love - what it means, how to do it, and how the practice of it has helped Andrea arrive at where she's at today. Tuesday MAY 8, 2018  and Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor Andrea Catherine is here to share with us her recipe for cooking Bok Choy.       What’s cooking? (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea)   (https://www.groundedhere.com/fearless-self-love-retreats)   Farmer’s Market is live I taught yoga in the morning, needed food, as I walked out and thought ah!  I told some farmers I’m gonna buy them out! So excited! I had so much food that I bought at the grocery store it didn’t make sense to drive there.  I know that Raven Ridge Farms (http://www.growravenridge.com) had some Baby Bok Choy! Bok Choy! One of my favorite things I describe it as a mixture between butter and celery butter on your celery not what I mean I love bok choy because it has this rich consitency It’s good raw I like it grilled or in the oven My favorite way is to cook it braised and curried bok choy adding curry spices tumeric black pepper himalyaned pink salt til they’re aromatic toss those spices one or two bunches of bok choy Take those leaves and leave them whole place the spiced choy in a warm skillet or do it on the grill 1-3 minutes on each side till their tender, grill is nice! another way to enjoy spices so simple another way to enjoy those spices i mentioned before you can use just salt and pepper bok choy pick it up and eat the whole leaf eating with your hands can’t get in the garden to grow food it’s an excuse to eat with our hands get that tactile sense eat it alone layer it in your eggs Benedict put it on your hamburger might bite down I prefer to eat it alone definitely one of my favorite vegetables has some cool nutritional benefits bone growth Vitamin A beat off bacteria healthy vision love this vegetable! excited that it’s already here! I think my mom always put bok choy on stir fry or Chinese food. Does it taste like cabbage? Kind of tastes like cabbage but richer, has that buttery taste! buttery on it’s own at the base at the bottom it’s thicker juicy cook it you get that quality you don’t get with kale or cabbage maybe with a Napa cabbage Chinese cabbage baby bok choy smaller easier to work with I wonder what it’s like to grow that? You just get one head per seed that your growing more like a cabbage in that way It is so good! Especially right now while people are fighting allergies fighting off some of that bacteria right now Great time of year to visit the farmer’s market and see how you can nourish yourself could use it to make Chinese food meal chop it and put it in a salad I was gonna ask can you eat it raw? Absolutely Yeah! slice it real thin put it in your salad kind of like a cucumber texture! I hope people will see it at the farmer’s market and support their Local famers. I think as we go through pull up some recipes (http://thewickedgoodfarm.com) Brooke suggested I contact you originally recipes keep up with I’d be curious to hear how other people prepare Bok Choy or what they got at the farmer’s market! If you’ve been enjoying hearing about food? I’ve been eating so much healthier. I hope if listeners are a market farmer they’ll share these tips with their customers! Tuesday May 1, 2018  and (https://www.groundedhere.com/health-boosts) . (https://www.groundedhere.com/podcast) I’m just eating healthier. I feel like I’ve learned so much from you. The difference between what you made last week and what I made is I didn’t have the mung beans…. that’s basically it. I’m following the Food Babe Sugar Detox (https://foodbabe.com/sugardetox/) (https://foodbabe.com/sugardetox/) Pre-Cleanse I didn’t end up ordering split yellow mung beans and I’m just sprouting them. I’ve been doing a pre-cleanse, I cut out caffeine sugar processed foods wheat I made split pea soup with carrots, I made a red lentil dahl with tomatoes and kale and rice My mung beans will be ready tomorrow. sprouting beans nutrient dense food you can do it from a dried bean! take a quart sized jar quarter cup at the most 1/8 of a cup cover the bottom with a couple of layers of beans They are? I thought they would be chick pea size! not when their dry not the ones I’ve been using 24 hours soak pour water over beans strain it off for the next several days rinse with cold water they start to sprout cover with cheese cloth I started them Sunday night I will be cooking with them tomorrow, Wednesday. cooking split yellow green red organic company Bob’s Red Mill (https://amzn.to/2FO15ni) has those beans that’s an easy way to start posted on my website under healing food groundhere.com/cleanse (http://groundhere.com/cleanse) Ghee (https://www.groundedhere.com/health-boosts) I was gonna share in addition to the sprouting here’s why it’s almost 1 and 1/2 times a pound of ghee if you’re not sure what ghee is it’s not the clothing you wear to special cooking so refined medicinal value of whatever it’s cooked with deep into the body’s tissues clear instead of cream density less refined cream or a yogurt vs and oil often times it is used in the cleansing process spices and herbs deeper cooking Ghee special qualities refined carries the medicinal value deep into the bodies tissues during a cleanse it’s the preferred oil to use Today we’re gonna talk about? What’s Ghee made out of? clarified butter long shelf life as long as you don’t contaminate it with dirty water or a spoon As long as you don’t put water in it and give it an opportunity to grow bacteria Start with a pound of unsalted organic butter when I was in Michigan I had a farm share to get raw milk butter. It was easy to get a hold of that but if you can’t get a hold of raw, use  unsalted organic butter melt that over medium heat barely boil cream colored milk curds color butter will turn golden really beautiful clear Farmer asked me: why would you boil the butter? The butter is so amazing! espically really organic grass fed I am not opposed to butter at all ghee has s different value can store on shelf can cook at a really high heat without smoking! quality of being super refined Like a special quality stokes digestive fire – boosts your appetite without  without overheating fire and water element without causing inflamation cool food to use stoke digestion absorption and assimilation Like a medicinal butter if you will…. tradition 100xs washed ghee The idea is that ghee doesn’t always look like an oil after you cook it and strain it and store on the shelf warm environment it will sort of harden still be soft won’t look like an oil anymore refined product you can wash it with cold water over and over again turn to a really white color Becomes a medicinal cream for... Tuesday April 17, 2018 and Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor Andrea Catherine is here with us! We were just talking about it’s sunny and light out and we’re getting tired! The sun is still up  late in Montana.  To be honest I hate DST (daylight savings) in Montana. Seven o’clock for me it’s time for bed!  If you are ready for bed like Jackie you can make these recipes tomorrow, they’re not really  eat early sleep wake up in the morning Scones and jam I am going to share with you Spring what this season means and how it impacts our bodies. We might feel, depending what’s going on in our lives it can be a feeling a little stuck For me it’s a season of a lot of change I’ve been benefitting from doing things that make nourishing for me I make sure I read and get cozy before bed This weekend I found out someone in my family is really struggling, it hit me pretty hard but realized this is the weekend to do taxes but before I did that I knew I need to nourish myself My mom made scones when I was growing up. I joke that my two favorite food groups are scones and Chai which isn’t a stretch at all. Antioxidant Jam (https://www.groundedhere.com/health-boosts) My favorite scone is probably a Dry english scone They’re kind of hard to come by and I haven’t perfected them yet. I have to wait til I go back to tea house in Ann Arbor or I go abroad to get a dry english scone I made these scones with my friend Brooke Bohannon’s stone milled flour. Montana Milling in Great Falls She mills it in her meadow Mills Stone Mill the flour that I used for that recipe is (http://thewickedgoodfarm.com/?s=wheat&post_type=product) Hard Red Wheat Does that make your scones red? flour has a pick hue to it darker then normal not a dark red flour is more of a tan pink I used that flour some raisins Fruit I don’t always put fruit in ginger cinnamon Season of congestion eating a lot of gluten can cause excess congestion.  I am not an advocate of being gluten free unless you need to Using heirloom wheat can be digested better sometimes then highly processed bleached flour partly for that reason added other ingredients require a lot of butter coconut oil or ghee recipe (https://amzn.to/2r8nG8T) Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners: Familiar Western Food Prepared with Ayurvedic Principles (https://amzn.to/2r8nG8T) by Amadea Morningstar Liz’s scones Calls for raw milk use we’ve got Kalispell Creamery near where I am coconut milk fresh ginger root heirloom flours that probably will be easier to digest will cause less congestion less inflammation get that nourishing quality in the springtime Sometimes we can over-crave it but doesn’t mean we have to deprive ourselves I am fascinated about the flour In one of her emails to her CSA members head on the spikelets on the head of the wheat that’s what she uses to mill how we get our flour I can take for granted that fine really process flour and not think about the growing process and the milling process before it becomes a scone that I want to devour. Fresh milled flour is like two totally different beasts. So good! I have been seeing a lot of things lately that the whole gluten free thing is really the chemicals they’re putting on the wheat is the thing people are reacting to. talk about gluten might be chemicals some people talk about What did your ancestors eat? if your they were eating potatoes and not wheat We inherit the gut flora from our  maternal so it also depends on how we can actually digest our food I agree with you it’s not just “oh flour is bad!” one of my teachers (https://amzn.to/2HXhkE0) Dr. John Douillard... Tuesday April 24, 2018  and Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor Andrea Catherine is here to share with us her spring cleanse.     Consistency, consistency, consistency… I’m struggling this day because this weekend I was on google Analytics and trying to figure out what people are doing… because 25,000 people have been to my website and left within 10 seconds. It always tells me the average is 90 seconds but to see 25,000 have left in 10 seconds? Google Analytics is a rabbit hole. Part of me is like I should quit doing the show notes. I do the show notes for me because when I am talking with the guest it helps me remember what people say so i can tie it altogether. And someday I may write a book…anyway… What’s cooking? (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) I finally tried the golden milk (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) . I woke up from a bad dream and could not fall asleep and the golden milk totally worked! (https://www.groundedhere.com/fearless-self-love-retreats) The mystery and magic is more in the intension then the food blasphemous cooking and preparing food has so much to do with the pausing being with the ingredients grinding up spices for the golden milk To me that’s the preparation for our digestion slowing down using our senses experience what we are preparing to receive the thing we are cooking for us something easier to digest calm our nervous system in a way that we can then receive. preparing and drinking the milk was something that served you so well… So i was listening to this podcast trying fall asleep with Gwenyth Paltrow interviewing Oprah and Oprah talks about how she is present in every single second of her life. (https://goop.com/thepodcast/) The GooP Podcast (https://goop.com/thepodcast/) I also texted you my phone screen died and I have my old iPhone 4 out and it won’t download anything etc. There were 2 Lewis Howe’s podcasts on there one with the Founder of Organifi and he was talking about Ayurvedic Nurtition. Oprah doesn’t know it she’s totally my homegrown. I totally think Hillary Clinton will come have tea in my garden someday. One thing I learned about Google Analytics my listeners go to news websites their news junkies like Mike. My mom and Mike are appalled with the whole Facebook thing my feeling is it’s time to buy facebook stock they’re not going anywhere. They take money now, they bought instagram! I love instagram! Everybody loves instagram! I threaten quite often to throw my phone in the river my ideal lifestyle would involve technology an hour a day or less which is a long day off. I’m just thinking about  when I’m happiest my phone is on airplane mode and my computer is no where near me Im in the kitchen or in nature all of these tools to connect us we know they isolate us in a way share with you what I wanted to talk about today that pause how to do that why to do that So Jackie it’s time for a cleanse for me at least. Every year, 2xs a year I do some kind of a cleanse involves  Ayurvedic Kitchari  (https://www.groundedhere.com/cleanse)   Ayurvedic Kitchari (https://www.groundedhere.com/cleanse) mung beans basmati rice vegetables in season cilantro cumin coriander black pepper salt avocado herbal tea that’s it mono diet for 3-7 days in the winter fall transition I stick to that mono diet nourishing the body digests it very well mung bean most easy to digest legume white basmati easier to digest or stick to  quiona amaranth dahl beans themselves spices in the golden milk help to digest the bean help to eliminate gas In springtime what I will do do about a weeklong cleanse I will not just have  Kitchari... I’m glad to be here because it helps to keep me accountable  what Im eating how Im making it what’s the season accountability helps me Last week you asked me in this Springtime before you’re planting  just talk about what I am cooking and preparing for yourself. started the process I roasted chickpeas this week.  (https://www.groundedhere.com/healthy-cravings) soaked some dry beans I like to start with the dry beans if there is time Less processing that goes on Reduces cooking time significantly soaking them overnight rinsing that water off rinses and cook with cumin coriander fennel could add other spices tumeric ginger less gassey reduces that time (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) similarly cook a legume with those spices pepper and ginger and tumeric spices are anti-gas digest better “beans, the beans the more you eat the more you toot” if we aren’t cooking them with spices cook them with those spices or some other spices that will aid in the digestive process Even black pepper will help I was following  I like Kate O’Donnel’s The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook: A Seasonal Guide to Eating and Living Well (https://amzn.to/2HAMOgu) (https://yogahealer.com/podcasts/) guest shows you can find her book try this on your own toss the cooked beans with some apple cider vinegar cook with spices oil let them roast the oven was about 400º didn’t take very long toss every 15 minutes THey were very tasty! One of the reasons were cooking them now besides because they are a storage crop don’t have to harvest them fresh drying can attribute to the flatuence problem ehlp to relive that dry quality counteracts the wet quality of springtime using eating foods that are warm dry cooked can start to balance what we are experiencing in our environment If you still have dry skin high anxiety a lot of gas to begin with might not be the best But overall it’s a  ood time of year for us to roast some chickpeas eating them over some rice root vegetables curry tomatoes coconut milk cilantro enjoying that in my lunches new experiment to roast some chickpeas restaurants are putting them on their menus you can put spices Play with it! cooking the beans yourself pepper cumin fennel lower and slower Let me ask, this might be a dumb quesiton but do you roast them on a cooking pan, roast them in the oven right? Yes, you can roast them slower, keep your eye on them   maybe like 30 minutes spread them on a cookie sheet tossed them every 10 or fifteen minutes cayenne pepper extra ginger salad toss with some oil curry snack on them mix with nuts A lot of restaurants now are putting them on a cheese plate another way to approach the chick pea favorite ones to cook with Indian dishes roasted something different someone who reaches for snacks a lot and reach for snacks that are not going to serve your body its a nice alternative high protein I also want to say if you do an acid/alkaline diet they are on the alkaline side. I love this because I love chick peas and I am definitely snacker. I definitely snack a lot especially at night. I’m really bad about prepping my meals I have been bugging my husband to make me Leanna Tu (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/instagram-nutritionologie/) and I was like that was so easy to do and this sounds like that so easy turn it  thrilled with batch tasking what do I want for lunch or for a salad when you have a chunk of Support this podcast

I’m super excited because Andrea Catherine is back on the line with us and she’s gonna talk about a recipe I saw on her website and I have all the ingredients and I’m gonna make it tonight!  So in Montana, NW Montana there’s snow on the ground. We thought it was spring! It’s not spring. It’s still winter here Im gonna share a recipe for golden milk I love this recipe because it’s super nourishing Maybe when you were a kid your mom made you a glass of warm milk. At the time my family didn’t know anything about Auryveda or anything. She’d just put a mug of milk in the microwave. Benefits raw cows milk local environment something that is local not as highly processed or a milk you digest well. heavy nourishing quality coconut hemp milk almond milk   There’s a heavy tradition which is why it can help with sleep in the Ayurvedic tradition spices make it the color gold but also the spices help you digest the milk Golden milk how to make it what it’s good for hungry right before we go to bed golden milk is a good option heat the milk on the stove ginger turmeric vanilla raw sugar Especially now I’ll wait till the milk is cooked and drain the spices I’ll add a bit of raw honey when it’s cool enough to drink especially if its local honey Will help with springtime allergies types of flowers that are pollinated heating warming quality of the golden milk (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) find it on my website  groundedhere.com/tea (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) cozy up with some golden milk and think about  what seeds your gonna start next or planning for the coming year turmeric All the spices together help aid in digestion If you don’t like one of those spices leave it out You want to enjoy this experience It should be sweet and nourishing If you want to add cinnamon Î love this it’s making me want to try it! IDK how I ran out of all those spices but the cardamon smells so good every time I walk into my kitchen! The cardamon is interesting it’s an anti inflamatory I love to add cardamon bitter acidic taste playing with spices I told Jackie I was also gonna share with you a recipe for a digestive aid tea biggest change of the year rough wind hard cracking skin a lot of mobility in our environment slower growth phase heavier qualities digestive cleanse the body cumin coriander fennel tea coriander is actually cilantro cumin fennel will be anti gas for you which will help you that tea can also help to mitigate hunger or the felling the hunger can help to regulate your metabolism I really love to drink the ccf tea if I find myself trying to procrastinate soothe that mental hunger searching for something to snack on tea can help me to find that out sometimes I just need that to settle my stomach down Well I never have that problem. haha jokZ. I am always like, I eat it doesn’t have anything to do with hunger… I always bit my fingernails…  I like to eat a lot of popcorn because i feel like at least that is not a lot of calories if I’m eating it’s healthier then potato chips… but tea? We should talk about hunger sometimes. There’s a lot to be said about how to shift that. So we are eating when we’re hungry and that can aid in our digestion. How do you brew that? Take cumin, coriander and fennel? What kind of fenneL drink that tea  fennel seed cumin seeds coriander seeds I have a You can just use a mortar and pestal grind them slightly not to a pulp. Just cracking the seed open can give you it’s essence and more of that quality in the tea I use about a teaspoon... Support this podcast

Does that sound interesting? You said you wanted something Eastery? (https://www.facebook.com/OurHenHouse/) I think it sounds awesome! I have been feeling really guilty lately, I just found this new podcast called Teaching Jasmin how to Cook Vegan, that is only on like episode 4 but they have this other podcast called the Hen House that’s been out for years. And my good friend Dacia who inspired me to quit using plastic and then seeing the  Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs would be an awesome idea for today! One of my students was joking about her mom hiding a white egg out in the snow but we have a foot of snow.  Tomorrow starts my first official day of Missoula Marathon training! You can’t get a better course then Missoula, cool, flat, early, gorgeous Montana! Come join me. If you heard the first episode Welcome! Whether or not you celebrate Easter you know about this tradition of dying easter eggs!  When I grew up you could even buy these shrink wrap those things and put it over the egg. IDK if you remember, you drop the egg in boiling water… We’d use food coloring to dye the eggs! You know we’d make it look cool! But… Dying the eggs with things and actual food is possible and something you want to share today The waste doesn’t have to go to waste you can compost it if you want I want to share with you what you can do with that even if you’re not gonna dye Easter eggs maybe you want to dye something else. 3 food Items will give us 3 different colors yesterday was a little drab, today is a bit cloudier. We’re craving that pop of color Incorporating that in our food can be helpful for our food and appetite! Is really fascinating to me, in the Auyervedic tradition Kapha heaviness and stickiness! Having vibrant colors can help us feel more live and connected to what we are eating! Turmeric Anyone uses turmeric knows it is a natural dye already! I have turmeric stained dish towels plates rug Turmeric can also be used appropriately as a dye too not just by mistake! It’s a gorgeous color! I love that color! Absolutely! It gives a kind of  mustard yellow when we dye the egg!  We actually are going to mix with vinegar water the vinegar will help that color to pop from the egg! A couple of Tablespoons of turmeric a cup of boiling water few teaspoons of white vinegar Let your egg sit for a minute or so rotate it If you dye easter eggs a lot you might want to do one side one color more vibrant that colors going to be the longer you leave it. dye eggs save the water and I’ll tell you why in a minute coming out of winter Beets The beets you are dying in the grocery store not a farmer, they’ve probably havn’t been just harvested so they could be stored in a way when you can eat them now Dark pink color from beets cut a medium beet in half add some boiling water cover the beet couple of tablespoons of vinegar again play with the temp get a really dark color color that the eggshell absorbs unless you leave it for a really long time cool removing the beets vibrant pink color If you are not like me, and you don’t just LOVE pickle beets, can you cook the beet, take the beet out and then put the vinegar in the water so you don’t get that vinegar taste? Yeah that makes a lot of sense! Great question – I’m gonna tell you what to do with the water, don’t throw it away! if you don’t like the vinegar taste... Support this podcast

In life, we can often feel as if the present moment is escaping us. Between work schedules, family and relationship priorities, and our own needs, we can get lost in the illusion of busyness. Mindfulness can help bring us back into awareness, allow us more availability to be with ourselves and others, and inform every moment of our lives. Join me as I interview Meditation Teacher, Gina Garlie, who like most of us became caught up in planning for life rather than actively living it. With 15 years of experience, she shares about how meditation has benefited herself, her relationships, and the community around her. Listen as she explores how acceptance and the courage to notice our true self helps us find self-care in every moment, connection to all other things, and a clearer perspective.
