Our healthcare system treats us like it's one size fits all, yet that's not how true healing works, especially when it comes to chronic conditions. Today's guest will help us understand how to fill the gap we experience with Western medicine, including the difference between signs vs. symptoms, and empowers our individualized healthcare. On this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator Andrea Nakayama to explore why chronic conditions require more than just a diagnosis and a prescription. They unpack Andrea's “three roots, many branches” model, revealing how digestion, inflammation, and genetics lie at the heart of chronic illness—and how nurturing the "soil" around them can lead to true healing. From nutrition habits to the importance of bio-individuality, this conversation empowers you to become an informed partner in your health care. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Intro: Our healthcare system is one size fits all(05:08) Andrea shares her motivation for her journey into functional nutrition, and a discussion of Western medicine(07:41) Should every person receive the same treatment for the same chronic condition(11:45) How to choose a guide in the health equation(16:40) Knowing the difference between your signs vs. symptoms(21:59) Andrea walks us through the “three roots and many branches” model(28:36) The roles digestion and inflammation play in our health(33:37) Tiers to nutrition mastery. Tier one is our non-negotiables(36:40) Don't neglect your passion and purpose(38:48) Andrea's non-negotiable trifecta: Sleep, poop, and blood sugarKEY TAKEAWAYS:Chronic health conditions must be understood through a systems-based lens, not just symptom management. Every chronic issue has three core roots—genes, digestion, and inflammation. Healing begins by nurturing these “roots” and the surrounding “soil,” rather than chasing individual symptoms alone. Western medicine excels in acute care but often falls short in managing chronic conditions. Patients are frequently seen through the lens of their diagnosis rather than as whole individuals, resulting in treatments that overlook their unique health histories and personal needs. One of the most powerful tools patients can use is specific, emotion-free communication based on personal health tracking. By clearly distinguishing between signs (measurable indicators like fever or rash) and symptoms (subjective experiences like fatigue or pain) and offering detailed timelines of when and how issues arise, patients empower providers to better understand and address their unique health needs.Supporting foundational health can start with three simple, non-negotiable nutrition habits: include fat, fiber, and protein at every meal or snack to help stabilize blood sugar; eat the rainbow to boost fiber and phytonutrient intake while feeding your microbiome; and know your yes-no-maybe list to understand better how specific foods impact your body. Tracking what makes you feel great, what doesn't, and what you're unsure about builds awareness and equips you to have more productive, personalized conversations with your healthcare provider.QUOTES: (07:41) “The first two gaps I encountered were that people are treated like their diagnosis. So, when you are in the medical system, you are your endometriosis, your fibroids, your breast cancer, your PMS. You are your symptom. The other gap was that everybody with the same symptom or diagnosis was treated the same.” - Andrea Nakayama(09:34) “A chronic condition means you're sick and you're not getting better. There's things going on for a long time, and our medical system isn't trained to address chronic conditions.” Andrea Nakayama(25:32) “The three roots of any chronic condition are always our genes, digestion and inflammation. All three need to be tended to for the branches to express themselves more fully.” - Andrea Nakayama(36:53) “We have an episode called the Longevity Equation, and one about Blue Zones and one of the big factors there that everybody seems to overlook is community and connection.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramNutrition Nugget: Genes and EpigeneticsSalad With a Side of Fries: The Longevity EquationSalad With a Side of Fries: Blue Zones: A Blueprint for Physical and Mental HealthSalad With a Side of Fries: The Down and DirtyGUEST RESOURCES:Andrea Nakayama - WebsiteFunctional Nutrition Alliance - WebsiteAndrea Nakayama - InstagramFunctional Nutrition Alliance - YouTubeAndrea Nakayama - PinterestAndrea Nakayama, Functional Nutritionist & EducatorAndrea Nakayama - Functional Nutrition Alliance | LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Andrea is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator who has led thousands of clients and teaches even more coaches and clinicians worldwide. As the 15-Minute Matrix Podcast host and the founder and former CEO of Functional Nutrition Alliance, Andrea draws on systems biology, mental models, root-cause methodology, and therapeutic partnerships to offer long-awaited solutions for the rapidly growing chronic illness epidemic. After losing her young husband to a brain tumor in 2002, she discovered a passion for using food as personalized medicine and is now regularly consulted as the nutrition expert for the toughest clinical cases in the practices of many world-renowned doctors. She trains nearly four thousand practitioners each year in her methodologies so that they can, too, become the last stop for their clients and patients and a trusted referral partner for doctors in their area.
The path to healing doesn't begin with a protocol—it begins with a story. Andrea Nakayama's powerful journey from caregiver to trailblazing functional nutritionist is a reminder that true wellness is personal, rooted, and deeply interconnected. Through loss, love, and resilience, she discovered that lasting health requires more than symptom management—it calls for curiosity, compassion, and the courage to slow down and truly listen to your body. Her message invites us to stop chasing quick fixes and instead embrace the transformational power of understanding our own biology, one small shift at a time. Key Takeaways: Slowing down your healing process helps you learn what truly works for your unique body. Mental and physical health are inseparable—connection, belonging, and digestion all influence the mind. Food is personal; learning how it interacts with your physiology empowers you to nourish rather than restrict. Chronic conditions aren't your identity—they're signals, and real healing starts at the root. Simple practices like balancing meals with fat, fiber, and protein or tuning into how food makes you feel can create major health breakthroughs. What are your favorite foods and drinks? For me, it's pizza and coffee—no question. But at the same time, I love feeling healthy, fueling my body with nourishing foods, and living a vibrant life. And that's exactly why I'm so excited to introduce you to this week's Cracking Open podcast guest, Andrea Nakayama.Andrea will change the way you think about food, healing, and love. In this deeply personal conversation, we dive into: ✨ The power of food as medicine and a path to healing ✨ How grief can crack us open and redirect our purpose ✨ Simple, transformative nutrition tips you can use right now ✨ The deep connection between nourishment, love, and presenceShe didn't come to nutrition through a traditional path—she arrived through love, loss, and an unshakable calling. After losing her young husband, Isamu, to a brain tumor in 2002, she turned to food as a source of healing, not just for herself but for others:"I couldn't get rid of his tumor. But what I could do was influence how he felt, how he managed treatments, and what was happening with him. That's when I started asking myself: What can I do? Food and nutrition gave me something I could actually do every day, several times a day, to help my husband."Today, as a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator, Andrea is a leading voice in the field, helping thousands of clients and practitioners reclaim their health through personalized nutrition. She also offers three simple, game-changing principles for better health:
Dr. Fiona Lovely is a longevity, health and wellness expert with specialties in menopause medicine, functional neurology and functional medicine. She is speaking to the topics of women's health around perimenopause and menopause. Today I welcome functional nutritionist and educator Andrea Nakayama to the show. It was delightful to meet her face to face as she was one of my fav early podcasters! We discussed many contemporary concerns with healthcare and our solutions. We talked about anemia in women as a frequently overlooked concern, with dehydration being a significant interconnected factor (did you know? I didn't!) Personalised medicine, based on the mantra "everything is connected, we are all unique, and all things matter" vs. protocol-driven approaches was explored in this chat. We discussed the importance of understanding bioindividuality through the epigenome and individual life history. The conversation reframed longevity as living well and with purpose, advocating for engagement with individual needs. It seems that as we no longer need to discuss the symptoms of menopause, we move on to wanting to live our lives better, happier and healthier. Longevity is that flex! If you're struggling with a chronic health issue, the answer may be closer than you realize. Listen in on this episode of Awaken Your Wise Woman, as host Elizabeth Cush welcomes Andrea Nakayama, a functional medicine nutritionist, for a talk about the healthcare journey for highly sensitive women. “Functional nutrition is a place for those addressing chronic health challenges to settle into a different way of approaching them.” — Andrea Nakayama Listen and learn: Two of the most glaring gaps in our medical system and how functional medicine helps address them The three primary tenets of functional medicine and their implications for highly sensitive women The three elements of the functional nutrition matrix and how they can help you understand and manage your health How antecedents, triggers and mediators shape our health story—and help us shape it going forward The benefits of making decisions in terms of risk and reward Why looking for the one thing that will “fix it” is counterproductive How to detoxify from a functional nutrition perspective—and it's not what we're hearing about in the media How to tap into the pharmacy inside us How our sensitivity and our health might be connected Find the full show notes and resources for all the episodes here.
My conversation with Andrea Nakayama gets to the heart of why many of us struggle with autoimmune recovery despite doing "all the right things."Andrea shares how she developed a different approach to functional medicine after her own life-changing experience, and explains why deep listening might be the missing piece in your healing journey. Whether you're feeling stuck with protocols that aren't working or just starting your recovery journey, you'll learn practical ways to tap into your body's wisdom and become the expert of your own health. Andrea also reveals the surprising science behind belonging and healing - it's not what you might think! For the complete show notes and links visit inspiredliving.show/181

Happy Satiated Saturday! Something I've been noticing is how much we're taught to see any symptom as a sign that something is "wrong" and that we have to embark on a "healing journey" to "fix" the symptom. For a moment, try this out on your body. Tell it that there is something wrong that you need to fix. What do you notice? How does your body respond to that?Striving to “heal” your body sends the message to your body that you are in danger. Your body activates your sympathetic nervous system and takes all your internal resources away from repair toward survival. You cannot heal in a fight or flight state. To decrease any bodily symptom or food coping mechanism, you have to stop thinking of yourself as broken and needing to be fixed. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Andrea Nakayama, Functional Medicine Nutritionist, educator, and founder of Functional Nutrition Alliance about: The gaps in traditional healthcareShifting perspective of a "healing journey"Misconceptions of nutritionThe basics of a health foundationUnderstanding the body's signalsThe three tiers of nutritional masteryRole of Narrative Medicine in recoverySupporting the body's natural healingYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/narrative-medicine-in-understanding-your-bodyWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Andrea:Websites: https://www.andreanakayama.com/https://www.fxnutrition.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreanakayama/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ReplenishPDXFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndreaNakayama.pageLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreanakayama/Support the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...
Send us a textOne of my favorite teachers and mentors, Andrea Nakayama, joined me today to discuss what she believes is missing in traditional healthcare: our personal stories. So many of us are hyper focused on what we can do, what supplement we need, what lab to get done, what protocol to follow, how much protein to eat, etc. We are grasping for a fix. While these can be helpful, we often forget that the individual plays a critical role. Understanding our own narratives—reflecting on our life experiences, emotions, and individual histories—is often the missing piece.Engaging with the humanities (like poetry, art, and storytelling) cultivates deeper listening and understanding of who we are. Andrea underscores that this deeper connection can facilitate healing, especially for women navigating significant hormonal and life changes in perimenopause, menopause and post menopause. What moves us—our emotions and truths—can offer insight into our health and healing journeys. Andrea urges us to embrace our stories as powerful tools for improving our health and well-being and to include them as part of our healing journey. Andrea believes Narrative Medicine is what we are missing in Healthcare today.I deeply enjoyed this rich discussion with Andrea and I know you will too. This inspired her to revolutionize the approach to chronic illness. In this episode, Dr. Jannine Krause speaks with Andrea Nakayama, founder of the Functional Nutrition Alliance, about her groundbreaking work in narrative medicine—an approach that focuses on listening to a patient's story and addressing the nuances in the clent's story often overlooked in healthcare. Andrea shares how integrating health stories with clinical insights can help uncover the root causes of chronic conditions and why many people don't improve despite doing “all the right things.” What You'll Learn in This Episode: How the medical system's diagnosis-first approach impacts your health journey. Why doctors and the healthcare system can't always “fix” chronic illnesses. The dangers of treatment bias in alternative and functional medicine. The value of doing your own research to empower your healthcare decisions. Risks of following social media influencers for health advice. Why foundational health tests—like blood work, hydration checks, and bowel movement evaluations—are crucial. How combining your health story with your chemistry reveals key health insights. The surprising power of joy and its role in healing beyond supplements and protocols. Key Takeaways: Your Story Matters: Chronic illness isn't just about symptoms—it's about the full context of your life and history. Listen to Your Body: Foundational health markers, like hydration and digestion, hold valuable clues to your health. Beware of Bias: Both conventional and alternative medicine can fall into one-size-fits-all treatment patterns. Joy Is Healing: Small, joyful activities can be as transformative as any supplement. In today's episode of the Balancing Chaos Podcast, Kelley sits down to dive deep with functional nutritionist Andrea Nakayama. Her goal is to pioneer the movement to transform healthcare into a system that WORKS. Andrea knows that a functional nutrition approach is the answer to our healthcare crisis, both for individuals and for society at large. Her method involves understanding the mechanisms that led to chronic disease in an individual; to uncover how and why that unique body has reacted as it has; to look at the evidence that familial history, lifestyle choices, and circumstances amass to become underlying physical factors of disease and distress; to reveal the biological tipping point that manifests as signs, symptoms and diagnoses; and to find and use the appropriate diet and lifestyle modifications that could actually help the chronically ill person get better. In this episode, Kelley and Andrea explore the gaps in the medical system when it comes to treating individuals as whole people rather than just their diagnoses. Together, they emphasize the importance of recognizing that doctors have limited medical training and may not have all the answers when it comes to alternative treatments such as a customized nutrition approach. Through their conversation you will learn the three roots of chronic disease, the problem with trendy diets and why they don't work, the circle of influence around inflammation, what your bowel movements have to say about your health, and SO much more! Root cause medicine is all the rage if you follow any functional medicine experts and while that is an important part of treating you as a whole, root causes are not the only thing we need to think about. My guest on this episode, functional nutritionist Andrea Nakayama, so beautifully talks about the roots but also the branches, the various systems and terrains of our body and lifestyles. She also shares the developing science of omics, the reason some of us react differently to foods, medicines, supplements, viruses, etc. than someone else. Andrea also shares much of her journey with her own health as well as the loss of her husband and how her experiences with autoimmunity and her husband's cancer have shaped the way she sees functional medicine and health. You know how I feel about one-size-fits-all solutions to anything, and the health and wellness industry is no exception. So when we cover topics like todays, I'm always careful to bring people on who will share what they've learned, what they know to be true, their expertise BUT ALSO say that YOU need to figure out what's right, best, and true for you. Said another way, they offer solutions, just not the one-size fits all kind. With that in mind, let me introduce you to our guest. Andrea Nakayama is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist, educator, and Host of the 15-Minute Matrix Podcast, where she draws on systems biology, mental models, root cause methodology and the therapeutic partnership to offer long-awaited solutions for the rapidly growing chronic illness epidemic. Andrea is leading a revolution in which we reclaim OWNERSHIP over our own health. Here's all I know for sure: your body is yours, you only get one, and you're the only one who has to, who gets to, take care of it. There are many ways we can abandon ourselves, but hating our bodies so much that we don't even listen to them anymore has got to be pretty high up on the list. Prioritizing our health and longevity is the most beautiful thing we can do.
