New Brunswick guide Jason Curtis shares what 39 years around grouse, woodcock, and wild birds have taught him about developing young bird dogs. Nick welcomes Jason back to the podcast eight years after their first conversation. They start on the Miramichi River, where a fall trip can combine Atlantic salmon fishing with grouse and woodcock hunting, then move into the part of the conversation that hit closest to home: raising a puppy for her first season. Jason explains why he begins exposure work early, how he introduces a wing, birds, a bell, and gunfire without turning puppyhood into a formal training program, and why short sessions woven into everyday life can build the foundation for later work. He and Nick also talk about what younger dogs pick up from older dogs, why solo hunting time still matters, and how real contacts with wild birds can change a dog quickly. The conversation also covers New Brunswick's changing woodcock migration, the timing of a Miramichi cast-and-blast trip, and what visiting hunters need to know about guides, lodges, and the short October window. Jason starts as soon as the puppy comes home, but he keeps the work light and playful. He uses short sessions with a wing, a small check cord, and simple moments around food or doorways to introduce the idea of standing still and paying attention. At that age, the goal is exposure and foundation, not polished performance. How does Jason introduce a young dog to birds and gunfire? He begins with sound at a distance while the puppy is occupied and confident, then closes that distance gradually. Around 12 weeks, he may introduce planted birds at a preserve. By roughly 16 weeks, when the individual dog is handling each step well, he likes to begin finding wild birds in real cover. Why are wild birds valuable for a young bird dog? Wild birds teach lessons that planted birds cannot fully reproduce. Their scent, movement, escape behavior, and use of cover require the dog to adjust naturally. Jason has watched young dogs make visible progress after several consecutive days of good wild-bird contacts, especially in New Brunswick covers with strong grouse and woodcock numbers. Do young bird dogs learn from older dogs? They can learn a great deal about range, recall, routine, and backing by watching experienced dogs. Jason still believes the puppy needs solo time so it develops independence instead of simply following. The older dogs help establish the pattern, while individual contacts teach the puppy how to hunt for itself. When is the best time for a New Brunswick cast-and-blast trip? The overlap runs from the September 15 woodcock opener through the October 15 salmon close, but the full grouse, woodcock, and salmon window is October 1 through October 15. Hunters can float and combine both pursuits in one day, or hunt the cooler morning and fish the river later. Does a nonresident need a guide to hunt in New Brunswick? Yes. Jason explains that hunters coming from outside New Brunswick need a licensed guide. A lodge is the simplest all-inclusive route, while an Airbnb paired with the right independent guide can also work. Guide availability is limited during the prime October weeks, so the relationship and timing matter. Many behavior problems are rooted in stress, confusion, fear, frustration, or overstimulation, not stubbornness or “bad” behavior. Owners often misread what their dogs are actually communicating. Dogs cannot explain emotions with words, so behavior becomes communication. If you need help housebreaking your new puppy, visit pottytrainingyourpuppy.com for FREE resources. Dogs need more than just food and shelter. They also require mental and physical stimulation. A bored dog might appear to be lazy or a troublemaker, but in many cases, it is boredom leading to frustration that gives rise to problem behavior. Spotting the signs early in that process and offering enriching activities prevents restlessness and keeps your dog healthier and happier. If you need help housebreaking your new puppy, visit pottytrainingyourpuppy.com for FREE resources. In this episode of Puppy Talk, we talk about how many common dog behavior problems are accidentally taught by the owners themselves. Jumping, barking, leash pulling, and attention-seeking habits often continue because, from the dog's perspective, the behavior works. Dogs repeat what gets a result, even when the owner is trying to stop it. We break down a few everyday situations where people unknowingly reinforce bad habits and explain how a simple shift in awareness can help owners start teaching the behaviors they actually want. Zen Dog TrainingEpisode 64: Zen Dog Training Is People Training (Rereleased)Jason Connell and Gordon Fontaine rerelease E15 and disdiscuss the key component of training people in Zen Dog Training.Dedicated to Dr. Neil Wiseman. Remember to not expect too much from other people, our families, or dogs, and to give ourselves a little slack. Accept that everyone is doing the best they can with what they have. At first dog training is hard because it requires mutual communication and you must act and speak in counterintuitive ways to help your dog better understand you. Dog training is people training. At Zen Dog Training we teaching people to remember the counterintuitive aspects of how dogs learn differently than people as a way to help you train your dog a little easier.Recorded: 06-14-24Studio: Just Curious MediaPartner: Zen Dog TrainingListen:Apple PodcastsBuzzsproutSpotifyWatch:YouTubeHosts:Jason ConnellGordon Fontaine#justcuriousmedia #zendogtraining #mrjasonconnell #gordonfontaine #pets #puppies #dogoftheday #doglover #ilovemydog #puppylove #animals #doggy #doglife #lovedogs #animal #doglove #bestwoof #mansbestfriend #dogtraining #puppytraining #zen #dog #trainingSend us a text
Most of us focus on the cute parts of bringing home a puppy. Cuddling, playing, and taking lots of photos. I've done several episodes recently on the responsibility of raising a puppy. The main thing to remember once you take ownership of a puppy is that they need obedience training, and you have to practice with them. Follow the guidelines below to improve your practice sessions and the predictability of the puppy's learning of obedience skills.Daily practice is essential. Practicing once in a while will not work. You have to practice correctly, the way a professional dog trainer has taught you. Short training sessions several times a day are better than a single long session.RESOURCES:Podcast Website: http://puppytalkpodcast.comSponsor Website: http://www.topgundogtraining.comDale's books: https://www.amazon.com/author/dalebuchanan Top Gun Dog Training in Huntsville, Alabama. People call me to discuss puppy training, and their entire focus is on potty training. This happens a lot. The goal of this episode is to shift new puppy owners' focus to the bigger picture of raising a puppy beyond potty training and crate training.A dog trainer can only provide tips on potty training, crate training, play biting, and other issues because we don't live with the dog. Most of the unwanted behavior stems from the environment and from the owners' lack of leadership. The bigger picture includes:Setting rules and boundaries, Creating a structured scheduleObedience trainingLeash trainingSocializationIt's impossible to potty train a puppy without all of these elements of raising a puppy. Work on everything at once, and you will spend very little time on potty training. Two things in particular help with potty training: 1) when a puppy can stay in one place, and 2) when your puppy is tired. The main thing you need to do for effective potty training is to control the puppies' space inside the house and NEVER take your eyes off of them unless they are in a crate just big enough for them to lie down. Above all, get rid of pee pads. PRO TIP: Monitor their water intake by giving them 1 ounce per pound of body weight. If your puppy weighs 10 lbs, give them 10 oz of water throughout the day. That means about 2 ounces of water five times a day. After they take a drink, they will need to go potty 2-3 times within the next hour. Support Dixie's Fight Against Heart Disease. Donate here. Many people underestimate the level of responsibility needed to raise a puppy. Listen to my first episode of Puppy Talk called Owning a New Puppy is a Lot of Work. The Truth:Raising a young puppy starting at 8 weeks old is a part-time job.Hiring a dog trainer may not help. It's not the solution. You have to do the work yourself, with the help of a coach. The Myths:Puppies only need affection and playTeaching your puppy the command “no” will solve everythingPunishing the puppy by yelling or using force is importantPurchase "The Business of Dog Training" on AmazonRESOURCES:Podcast Website: http://puppytalkpodcast.comSponsor Website: http://www.topgundogtraining.comDale's books: https://www.amazon.com/author/dalebuchanan Top Gun Dog Training in Huntsville, Alabama. Being an effective leader and building trust in your dog requires a skill set grounded in effective communication, temperament, and focus. What to do:Make sure your communication is crystal clear. Trim the fat. Tell the dog what you want and reward them for doing it.Set your dog up for success. Make it impossible for them to fail and let them have fun in the process.Stay focused on “teaching” the dog what you want them to learn. What not to do:DO NOT talk to them so much, especially with repeated commands, where they check outDO NOT yell at your dog.DO NOT show frustration and lack of leadership skills.DO NOT use physical force with your dog. DO NOT over-correct your dog. The focus should not be on stopping a behavior, but teaching an alternative behavior. Building structure for your puppy in one of the best things you can do to help raise a happy, healthy, and obedient puppy. In this episode of Puppy Talk I discuss the why and how of puppy structure. Why?Structure creates calmness in the puppy.Structure creates an opportunity for the puppy to succeed, not failStructure helps you, the puppy owner, have more control over the puppy's behavior, obedience, and discipline. How?Stick to a routine: wake up, potty, short walk, training, eat, play, potty again, and nap.Your puppy is in school and needs a balance of math, English, history, and science. Recess can come after the other subjects.DO NOT replace the essential subjects with play and affection. This is having your puppy in recess all day long.Purchase "The Business of Dog Training" on AmazonRESOURCES:Podcast Website: http://puppytalkpodcast.comSponsor Website: http://www.topgundogtraining.comDale's books: https://www.amazon.com/author/dalebuchanan
