We're joined by Lucy Eldred from Canine Partners talking about the urgent need for funding and volunteers! Canine Partners trains assistance dogs for people living with physical disabilities and is making an urgent appeal for Puppy Training volunteers, as a sustained decline in volunteering since the pandemic poses a real risk to its ability to meet growing demand for life-changing partnerships which empower individuals with greater independence, security, and confidence. Because of overwhelming demand, due to rising costs and a decline in donations and volunteers, Canine Partners has been forced to make the difficult decision to temporarily close its waiting list to new applications for an assistance dog. Currently, about 100 individuals are waiting for a trained assistance dog, each urgently needing support with essential daily tasks to regain their independence and improve their quality of life. The dogs have much more to do than fetch and retrieve – they allow their human partners to reclaim independence in their day-to-day lives by opening doors, retrieving dropped items, operating light switches, and providing consistent emotional support. In addition to practical assistance, these canines also offer companionship, increased confidence, and a sense of safety. The impact is profound with 93% of individuals saying their assistance dog has improved their emotional wellbeing and confidence, while 89% report that their dog enables them to live life more fully, 73% need less formal care, reducing the strain on the NHS and local services, and 83% less dependent on family and friends.Follow on Instagram or go to their websiteThank you to the good people at Antinol. When your Cavoodle puppy bites, is the answer really just a firm “No”? In this episode, I want to unpack the big difference between something I like to call reactive vs proactive puppy training and why one will set you up for constant frustration while the other sets your puppy up for calm, polite behaviour. If you're wondering how to actually stop the biting instead of just reacting to it, this one's for you. Send us a textThis week we look to deunk myths about rising autism rates and explain the genetic and environmental factors at play, while exploring the resurrection of dire wolves through genetic engineering and how puppy cognition predicts adult dog behavior.• CDC data shows autism diagnoses increased from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 31 in 2022• Approximately 80% of autism cases stem from inherited genetic variations with 200+ genes linked to early brain development• Better screening, diagnosis, and awareness accounts for much of the increase in autism rates• Scientists have genetically engineered puppies with dire wolf traits using DNA from ancient remains• The three pups—Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi—received 20 gene edits targeting coat color, body size, and facial features• Study of 1,400+ puppies shows early cognitive traits persist into adulthood• Puppies good at following pointing gestures became more trainable adults, while those with better impulse control grew into calmer dogs• Understanding puppy cognition allows for customized training approaches that support lifelong well-beingSome Links and Studies:https://www.sciencenews.org/article/autism-adhd-risk-not-linked-prenatal-exposure-antidepressantsS. Visit us at shapedbydog.com How long should it take to train my dog? That's a popular question I get, so I'm covering how to set realistic expectations for every age and stage of a dog's life. Dogs are lifelong learners and learn with all their senses, so we're looking at how to create success with intention rather than letting things around your dog train them, so you can avoid the frustration of needing to untrain anything. In this episode, you'll hear: • Why age and stage play such an important role in dog training success. • Why dogs are lifelong learners and how that affects your training expectations. • What the "honeymoon period" is in dog training. • What to do when the honeymoon phase ends and distractions become a challenge. • How to handle the 8-18 month phase when hormones take over. • Why dogs can't learn “don't,” only what we want them to do. • How the first 8 months of a puppy's life are the bulk of the training work. • Why ongoing maintenance of your dog's education is crucial for long-term success. Episode web page: https://tinyurl.com/ywpva5x5 ----------------------- In this Insights Unlocked episode, host Michael Domanic sits down with Jack Mitchell, Head of Product and Operations at Zigzag, the #1 puppy training app. Jack shares how his team built Ziggy, an AI-powered virtual puppy trainer designed to provide personalized, science-backed training advice at scale. Jack explains that scalability was a major challenge for the certified B-Corp startup. Originally, Zigzag provided WhatsApp chat support with real dog trainers, but as the company grew, this wasn't sustainable. They needed a way to offer science-backed, consistent training advice while still maintaining the personal touch that users valued. Additionally, user behavior played a key role in the decision to develop an AI-powered chat. Zigzag found many customers hesitated to ask simple questions because they didn't want to bother a human trainer—even though they were paying for the service. AI eliminated this friction by making users feel more comfortable asking quick, everyday training questions. Zigzag is continuously refining Ziggy's AI model based on user feedback, with a 96% positive rating of the feature. "Trust is key," Jack said. "Users need to know they're getting the right advice—every time." Looking ahead, Jack said they aim to expand Ziggy's capabilities and explore how AI can further improve the pet training experience. "The goal is to keep making the AI better, smarter, and more useful for puppy parents everywhere," he said. Key Takeaways:

Zen Dog TrainingEpisode 39: The Zen Dog Training WayJason Connell and Gordon Fontaine discuss that dog training is not easily learned by watching videos. Training the Zen Dog Way starts with you, the human, learning how to communicate with your dog in the language they understand. Your dog is not a machine!
