In yet more evidence that the Strange New Worlds writers LOVE Star Trek, bringing the author Benjamin Russell (played by Benjamin Sisko in Deep Space 9 season 6, episode 13, Far Beyond the Stars) warms our cold, vacuum-dried hearts. There are so many character moments in this episode where this cast has an absolute field day, in and out of Ren Faire garb. Chris chats to Benjamin Russell about the design and development of their dexterity based puzzle adventure game, Mourning Star. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode388.mp3   The Sausage Factory 388 was edited by Chris O'Regan The Sausage Factory is an interview-based podcast that lifts the lid on the makers of videogames. It examines the way in which games are made by asking the very people who create them, though the questions asked aren't just about game design, they also cover how developers made their start and what inspires them as creators. Split into two halves, the first segment delves into what makes the developers tick by asking about how they started, what and who inspires them and what games they are currently playing, whereas the second part of the show covers the game that they are currently working on and the thought processes behind its development. So, if you really want to hear about a game's gestation in full and frank detail then you have found the right podcast.

Russell Athletic, the company that created the sweatshirt, began life as The Russell Manufacturing Company on 3rd March, 1902 in Alexander City, Alabama. Its founder was entrepreneurial polymath Benjamin Russell, and they specialized in women's undershirts. It wasn't until decades later - when Russell's son returned from college with a concept for college-based sportswear - that the brand embarked upon designing their iconic garment that still sells by the bucketload today. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly compare Russell to various characters in ‘It's A Wonderful Life'; outline rival Champion's claim to having invented the hoodie; and explain how ‘athleisure wear' has its roots in apparel designed for spectators, not participants… Further Reading: • ‘Our Heritage: A Rich History' (Russell Athletic official website): https://www.russellathletic.com/history • Benjamin Russell - The Alabama Business Hall of Fame (ua.edu): https://abhof.culverhouse.ua.edu/member/benjamin-russell/ • ‘Harold Lloyd in THE FRESHMAN (1925)' (Janus Films, 2013): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ntrhlDr8MU #Sport #Fashion #1900s #Inventions #Business #US  For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/Retrospectors We'll be back tomorrow! It's Thursday, and time again for a visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins us in the studio each week with her reviews of the region's theatrical endeavors. This week, she spotlights the new production of Kiss Me, Kate, the Bard-inspired musical now on stage at Annapolis Shakespeare Company. Kiss Me, Kate is the ----backstage story---- of the production of a fictional musical version of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, fueled by the conflicts, on-stage and off, between the show's director, producer and star, and his temperamental leading lady (and ex-wife).Written by Samuel and Bella Spewack, with music and lyrics by the inimitable Cole Porter, Kiss Me, Kate opened on Broadway in 1948 and enjoyed a long and successful initial run. In 1949, it won five Tony Awards, including the first Tony ever presented for Best Musical. Ever since, it has been a frequent internationally popular choice for revivals.Directed and choreographed for Annapolis Shakespeare Company by Sally Boyett, with musical direction by Marc Irwin, Kiss Me Kate features a 17-member cast led by Benjamin Russell as producer Fred Graham and Robin Weiner as his ex-wife and star, Lilli Vanessi.Kiss Me Kate continues at Annapolis Shakespeare Company through Sunday June 3.
