My guest today is the American video game designer and programmer Eugene Jarvis. Born in California, he studied computer science at Berkeley, where, in the basement of the physics laboratory, he played the early video game Spacewar. After graduating he worked for Hewlitt Packard, but quit after three days to join Atari, where he began programming for some of the first computerised pinball machines. In the late seventies he joined Williams where he and a colleague came up with the idea for a side-scrolling arcade game set on an alien planet. Defender became a hit in the arcades; the game has grossed more than $1.5 billion since 1981. More hitsfollowed: Robotron 2084 –– the first twin-stick shooter -- Smash TV and Cruis'n USA. In 2008, my guest was named DePaul University's first Game Designer in Residence. He remains the only game-maker to have one of his creations featured on a U.S. postage stamp. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty, signed by the United States and most other nations, now appears to be under fire. The conflict could take many different and largely silent forms, ranging from jamming a GPS satellite to temporarily blinding a sensor with a laser or relying on a cyberattack to disrupt services. Space was meant to be used for peaceful purposes but now it seems that the gloves are off. On tonight's show, Clyde Lewis talks with secret space program researcher and author, Mike Bara about STRATOSFEAR - THE SECRET SPACE WAR.Originally Broadcast On 4/16/19
TCW Podcast Episode 217 - The Games of Ed Logg Ed Logg had a long and distinguished career in Atari's coin-op division. Initially aspiring to be a math professor, his path changed after encountering the Atari 2600 at a friend's Christmas party. While at Atari, Logg created the legendary game Asteroids, which became a massive success. He continued his streak with Super Breakout and co-created Centipede with Dona Bailey. Inspired by his son's love of Dungeons & Dragons, and the game Dandy, Logg developed the classic Gauntlet. He later created one of the first arcade first-person shooters, Xybots. Although his attempts to transition into the 3D era with games like Steel Talons, San Francisco Rush, and Dr. Muto did not achieve the same level of success; Ed Logg's deep understanding of what makes a great arcade game has left a lasting impact not only in the coin-op space, but across the entire gaming industry. My guest today is an American scientist, entrepreneur, and a founding father of the video game industry. Born in 1943, he grew up in Utah, in a Mormon family, before leaving to study engineering and business at Utah State University. While a student he played Spacewar!, one of the earliest digital games designed for the PDP-1 computer. After graduation he joined an electronics company, and there met Ted Dabney, with whom he founded a start-up company with the aim of creating a commercial version of Spacewar! for the arcades. In 1972 the pair changed the company name to Atari, a term taken from my guest's favourite board game, Go. Together with another engineer, Al Alcorn, the trio produced Pong and, in 1976, the Atari 2600 console – which together birthed the modern games industry. Throughout the seventies my guest hired dozens of young engineers, including Steve Jobs who later co-founded Apple. Since then, he has founded more than twenty companies, received the BAFTA fellowship, and has been named one of Newsweek's “50 Men Who Changed America".Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. Roy Garrett and the Moon Men! (Part Four of Six) Roy Garrett and his crew must prepare the Moon Men for battle. Meanwhile, Squeemy and Tallulah get shotgun-married.Written by Bo Segrest StarringBILL FRYER as ROY GARRETT, SPACE CAPTAIN – late 20s, early 30s. Brave, blonde, and a former high school quarterback. Any woman would be lucky to date him! Everybody, even his girlfriend, refers to him by his full name: ROY GARRETT.BO SEGREST as SQUEEMY – Mid-to-late 20s. Roy Garrett's space cadet. Squeemish, neurotic, always messes up. Victim of both circumstance and his own decisions. ROSEMARY WEST as STARLETT O'MASSES – 25. Roy Garrett's high school sweetheart. Has a lot of dignity, but also is dating Roy Garrett, so how much can you have? Is loyal, kind, smart, and in her first trimester.DYLAN SMITH as RADAR – 35. The nerd of the group. Think NASA's smartest astronaut. Very intelligent, but the others never really let him talk enough to prove it. He knows his own value, but no one else does. Studied astrophysics under Albert Einstein's grandson, who was one of those professors who let students call him by his first name (Jim.)HENRY NICKERSON as HANK – The ship's computer. Talks like HAL 9000. Is very safe for the group to be around, but everything he says kind of sounds like he's plotting to kill everyone, though he never will. Is programmed to be very concerned for the well-being of the group dynamic. Has a round screen in each room of the ship where he can appear and talk to crew members. He can be removed from the ship so long as a lot of loose wires come along with him. RHETT SOSEBEE as KING MOON - The King of the Moon people. He is a good leader. He recognizes the bravery and heroism in Roy Garrett and his crew. He knows everything there is to know about his people, and most of the time they all live very happily on the moon. Owns a shotgun. ANNA O'DEA as TALLULAH - Space princess of the Moon (King Moon's daughter.) The most beautiful of the Moon Women. A sensual and romantic moon person.DANIEL RAMIREZ as GLORRP - King Moon's top scientist. Is an expert in a few things like moon anthropology, firearms, and TV repair.SARAH DUBLIN as VIDEO NARRATOR - an unnamed Moon Man who narrates a video. Think after school special narration. Not a Say No to Drugs after school special, but one of the good ones like what the world of the future will be like in 1987.BO SEGREST as KROKLOV - For some reason, he's Russian. So strong. Speaks in broken english. Is the Moon Men's main form of transportation. You just throw a thumb out from the sidewalk, and Kroklov will come. You hop on his back, he carries you where you need to go; it's that easy.HANNAH SCHIFFLET as THE NARRATORFeaturing MUSIC & SCORING by KAYLA HUTCHINS If you like the show, help us grow! rate, review, and subscribeFollow us on instagram @modernexhibitspodA part of the Asylum Podcast Network @asylumpodcastsYou can see the cast of Modern Exhibits perform Tuesdays at 8:00pm EST at Improv Asylum Theater in Boston: TICKETS

Since 1991 space has become an intrinsic part of warfare: from the liberation of Kuwait to Allied experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, militaries have become increasingly reliant on access to space systems for navigation, communication, surveillance, and the use of sophisticated weapons. Facing a leading space power, and without a sovereign space capability of their own, Ukraine has turned to a commercial platform to even the scales as part of combat operations against Russia's invaders. But outside of war, societies have also become reliant on space for day-to-day functions. Peter talks to Juliana Suess, a leading researcher into space and warfare (and host of the excellent ‘War in Space' podcast) about what this all means for societies, governments, militaries, industry, and alliances.

This episode, Kelly, Chelsea, and Nate lend their ears to Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down, an album that came out in 1983 and went Diamond (10x Platinum) in 1985 (assuming the Wiki chart is accurate)... which means it was the FIRST DIAMOND ALBUM. (If we were wrong, tweet at us!) We dig into the titular track, the awesome All Night Long, the soggy middle, the wondrous Running with the Night, and of course, Hello. And we play I See What You Did There! Have a First for us to discuss? On this episode of Pilsners and Politics Podcast, Benjamin sits down with Christopher Stone, a former Space Policy appointee to the Trump Administration. Benjamin and Christopher talk about the Space Force and its extreme importance to Americas National Security. While the Legacy Media, Status Quo, and Country Club Politicians in Washington, DC want you to believe the Space Force is a waste of resources, Christopher lays out the capabilities of our enemies in space. What would you do if China wiped out our ability to navigate with GPS? How would our military respond to an attack on our Military Satellites? Does the United States have the ability, and capability to prevent such attack? Should the United States have a deterrent in space? Find out on this weeks episode of Pilsners and Politics Podcast. Jude wants Pike's... cooking. We compare this episode to its source TOS episode, and the Kirk the world remembers versus the Kirk in actuality. We feint at, and then avoid, becoming an X-Men podcast, AGAIN. There's a sidetrack into Diane Duane at some point, Zathras lost track. Dreaming of Daddy Pike taking a dip in Cetacean Ops. And then we end our friendship arguing about TNG movies. In which the gang, loopy after too many recordings, breaks the format a bit, much to Justen's distress. We have to discuss the big death in this episode, and whether we hate it or we just hate how the show makes us have to feel things in our cold hearts. The phrase "implanting apparatus" is uttered, to the dismay of Jude and Ana (and Zathras). A xenobiology moment too disturbing for JUDE is brought up. Spock is compared to a scruffed cat. Pike is Space Daddy, AGAIN. We want to thank all the fanzine writers and rabid Spock/Chapel shippers who worked for the past 55 years to make Chapel a principal character in this show. The benefits and down-sides of a prequel that has some better characterization than the show that comes "next"...Connect with the show at @babylonpodjectHelp us keep the lights on via our Patreon!Justen can be found at @justenwritesAna can be found at @The_Mianaai, and also made our show art. Both Ana and Justen can also be found on The Compleat Discography, a Discworld re-read podcast.Jude Vais can be found at @eremiticjude. The Computer Games Museum in Berlin knows that its visitors want to play games, so it lets them. The artifacts are fully-playable video games, from early arcade classics like PacMac to modern console and PC games, all with original hardware and controllers. By putting video games in a museum space, the Computer Games Museum invites visitors to become players. But, players can become visitors too. Video games have been inviting players into museum spaces for decades. In the mid 1990s, interaction designer Joe Kalicki remembers playing PacMan in another museum – only this one was inside a video game. In Namco Museum, players navigated a 3D museum space to access the games, elevating them to a high-culture setting. Since then, museums and their cultural shorthands have been a part of the video game landscape, implicitly inviting their players-turned-visitors to think critically about museums in the process. In this episode, Kalicki presents mainstream and indie examples of video games with museums inside them: from Animal Crossing's village museum to Museum of Memories, which provides a virtual place for objects of sentimental value, to Occupy White Walls where players construct a museum, fill it with art – then invite others to come inside.
