POPULARITY
Greetings earthlings. Today we are joined by Matt Perger, a two time world champion barista, award-winning writer, Founder of Barista Hustle and coffee roaster from Melbourne! We're asking Matt - Is AI friend or foe?! Join us as we deep dive into AI in the coffee industry - from the AI you didn't even know you were using, to its role in optimising logistics, automating coffee shops, and tracking consumer behaviour. Matt has always been pushing the boundaries of coffee science. He's the Barista who popularised using the EK43 grinder for espresso, sieved coffee grinds for uniform particle size in the WBrC and designed his own tamper (amongst other things). It was epic to hear his take on the future of the industry - he's a self proclaimed technooptimist! In Coffee (fake) News: Articles circulate claiming a cup of coffee will now cost $12 in Australia, but where are we pulling this number from? Plus!! The hot takes are just getting hotter, with a new city potentially overtaking Melbourne as the coffee capital..? We also deep dive into our dream coffee setup if money were no object! If you're new here (welcome), our show dives into some of the best coffee conversations on the internet, but we will always remind ourselves at the end of the day; It's Just Coffee! It was such a fantastic and informative episode. Massive thanks to Matt for joining the show and sharing his wealth of knowledge.
Time Slips By - Go By Ocean _ Ryan McCaffrey小红书:@Coffeeplus播客 @Yujia是做咖啡播客的微信公众号:Coffeeplus播客如果你喜欢我们的节目内容,请记得订阅频道。
One of the greatest coaches in college football history arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2007 when Nick Saban agreed to become the head coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Coach Saban created a dynasty in 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa, winning more than 200 games, nine SEC titles, and six National Championships. WBRC's Jeh Jeh Pruitt, Mike Dubberly and former sports producer Brian Pope reflect on Saban's hiring, and how much his coaching tenure impacted Tuscaloosa and the state of Alabama.
Many of you remember exactly where you were on April 27, 2011...one of the most devastating weather days in our state's history. More than 250 people tragically lost their lives, while thousands more were injured. That day, 62 tornadoes touched down across Alabama, leaving building and homes shattered and destroyed in it's wake. Three people who remember that day all too well are WBRC First Alert Weather meteorologists Wes Wyatt, J-P Dice, and Fred Hunter. These weather experts not only remember the moment these storms happened, but also how neighbors came together to help each other during a difficult time.

Vol.58 The Things You Don't Know About Emi Fukahori and MAME。 Emi Fukahori (Ins: emifukahori/mamespecialtycoffee)2018 World Brewers Cup Championship Champion2021 World Barista Championship Finalist 2018 World Barista Championship 3rd - Mathieu Theis(coach: Emi)2019 World Barista Championship 6th - Mathieu Theis(coach: Emi)2022 World Barista Championship 4th - Takayuki Ishitani (coach: Emi)2022 World Brewers Cup Championship 3rd - Elysia Tan (coach: Emi)2023 World Barista Championship 2nd - Daniele Ricci (coach: Emi)2024 World Brewers Cup Championship 3rd - Ryan Wibawa (coach: Emi)Fey(Ins:kinaluga/小红书:feyfey)荷兰咖啡师决赛、冲煮决赛感官评审卓越杯CoE国际评审德国SCA教育统筹委员2023雅典WBC世界咖啡师大赛 主持人2023台北WRC世界烘焙大赛 主持人2024芝加哥WBrC世界咖啡冲煮大赛芝加哥 主持人2024釜山WBC世界咖啡师大赛 主持人『Table of Contents』 01:20 Emi与精品咖啡的缘分和Mame的诞生03:02 Emi与合伙人Mattiew一起驰骋世界赛场04:35 我们眼中的Emi,打破传统日本女性的刻板印象06:54 想找世界冠军做教练? 01:11:47 The best coffee is the coffee you like01:14:22 有趣的欧洲、欧州咖啡馆服务文化差异01:21:25 Emi的中国行经历01:24:31 Ending01:25:34 福利时间『延伸资料』『本期主播』YIKEYUJIA如果你喜欢我们的节目内容,请记得订阅频道。

In 1939 the just-heard Mel Allen became the New York Yankees radio announcer. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 14th, 1913. While attending the University of Alabama he became the public address announcer for the Crimson Tide football team. In 1933, when radio station WBRC asked Alabama coach Frank Thomas to recommend a new play-by-play announcer, he suggested Allen. Allen graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1937. Shortly after he took a train to New York City for a week's vacation. While there, he auditioned for a staff announcer's job at CBS. CBS' top sportscaster, Ted Husing, had heard many Crimson Tide broadcasts. Allen was hired for forty-five dollars per week. Although he was calling Baseball, Allen continued to announce other shows on the Network. He was CBS announcer for the Duffy's Tavern pilot, which aired on Forecast July 30th, 1940. After Ruth and Gehrig retired, Joe DiMaggio became the next Yankee legend. The Yankees main rival, the Boston Red Sox, were led by fellow future Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams. Norman Corwin riffed on this rivalry during his production of “Between Americans”, for Screen Guild Theatre which aired the night of December 7th, 1941. Both players missed three seasons in the mid 1940s while at war. Ted Williams missed most of two more during the Korean conflict.
A 38-year-old man is accused of stabbing and dismembering his 52-year-old live-in fiancée. According to Al.com, a neighbor called 911 on Oct. 22 to check on a Bailey Drive property. Tammy Bailey was dismembered and had more than 100 stab wounds when authorities arrived. WBRC-TV says that the Blount County Sheriff's Office identified Justin Fields as a suspect. On Oct. 21, the couple apparently returned from a birthday trip, and Fields desired sex with his girlfriend. Fields allegedly stabbed her once while frustrated. "On Saturday, he felt like he was having a bad dream," said Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon. Moon continued, "He stabbed her again." Authorities believe that the individual died on Oct. 21 from a heart wound. Moon told WBRC that Fields spoke with his father on Saturday, Oct. 22, over the phone and said he did something "horrible." The father allegedly called the victim's sister, who is also Bailey's neighbor. The sister reportedly tried to enter the home, but Fields wouldn't let her inside, telling her "he had done something horrible and she didn't need to go in there." Records say Fields was arrested for murder and corpse mistreatment on Oct. 23. If you have a CRAZY FAMILY STORY, tell us!! Longtime "Voice of the Crimson Tide" Eli Gold will miss at least the start of the Alabama football season because of unspecified health reasons, so you won't hear him doing play-by-play broadcasts for the Tide when 'Bama kicks off against Utah State. Instead, Alabama fans will hear the voice of Chris Stewart, who has been the longtime voice of the Alabama men's basketball broadcasts and has hosted the pregame and postgame shows for Alabama football broadcasts as well as the Coach Nick Saban show. Chris recently joined Mike Dubberly for a Mike Behind the Mic to talk about the enormous responsibility of filling in for a legend in the broadcast booth.
In this latest episode of Mike Behind the Mic, Mike Dubberly talks with longtime play-by-play broadcaster with the Birmingham Barons, Curt Bloom. "CB" as he's known, got to fulfill a lifelong dream of calling a Major League Game. He was "called up" to do a Chicago White Sox game recently and talked about the experience. Curt is hoping this opportunity opens the door to finally move up to the Big Leagues for good, but also hopes his drive to never give up on that dream inspires others.
Are you having a bad day? Need a pick me up? Then you'll want to listen to Anthony Smith, who works for Birmingham Parks and Rec, but has the gift of singing. I promise you will come away with your spirit lifted and maybe come away with a more positive perspective on life. Anthony grew up, one of 12 children in Pratt City. He played football for Alabama A&M and got his master's degree at Alcorn St. But what he enjoys most is bringing joy to people, especially through his gift of singing. But never did he anticipate the positive impact he would have until the pandemic hit and people were home missing out on normal celebrations like birthdays. Here's an ordinary man doing extraordinary things by simply being himself.

I am so excited to share this interview with Adam Obrátil, the co-founder of one of the Czech Republic's most well known and foundational cafes, Industra Coffee! Founded in 2013, Industra brought a newer specialty coffee experience to the Czech coffee scene that was just beginning to get established. Both Adam and his partner Petra Střelecká are long time coffee pros who cut their teeth in some of London's busiest cafes before starting the shop. Both Adam and Petra have competition experience and Petra is 3x Czech Brewers Cup Champion and 6th place finisher at WBrC. Through the years of running the shop they have grown from just the two of them working behind the bar, to now a staff of 10 people serving a large and loyal, growing customer base. In my conversation with Adam we learn about their history, their road to ownership, the biggest lessons along the way and how they have approached service, quality, delegation and what their plans are for the future! Early cafe experience The journey to ownership Bringing a new style of coffee to the Czech scene Attracting all ages from a traditional culture Hiring for hospitality Navigating the different between being a barista vs owner Growing and delegating in order to scale Handling COVID Serving community and supporting each other Plans for the future Links: Instagram https://www.industracoffee.cz Related Episodes: 107 : Kyle Glanville & Charles Babinski of G&B Coffee and Go Get em Tiger 129 : Founder Friday w/ Casey & Jeremy Miller of The Mudhouse, St. Louis, MO Need consulting? An Officer is hit by a car speeding from a crime scene off Lakeshore. WBRC's Clair Huddleston has the latest for JT.
Spann began his broadcast career in Tuscaloosa in 1973 at WTBC radio.[3] There, in high school, he worked the night shift, while former ABC 33/40 anchor Dave Baird worked mornings. Spann volunteered many hours following the 1974 Alabama tornadoes in Jasper. He began his television career in the summer of 1978 at 33/40 predecessor WCFT in Tuscaloosa, the "33" in 33/40. In fall 1978, Spann moved to WSFA in Montgomery as weekend sports anchor and part-time weatherman. After spending the summer of 1979 as afternoon-drive announcer at Top 40 station WHHY-FM ("Y102") in Montgomery, he was hired at WAPI-TV in Birmingham as chief weatherman, despite having no formal weather education. At the age of 23, he was one of the youngest chief weathermen in the country. Channel 13 was sold to Times Mirror in 1980 and renamed WVTM-TV, and Spann impressed his new bosses enough that they moved him to sister station KDFW in Dallas in 1984. In 1985, he was named the best weathercaster in the Metroplex by the Dallas Press Club, defeating such competition as KXAS-TV's Harold Taft and WFAA-TV's Troy Dungan. After only two years, he returned to Alabama as part owner of a small AM-FM radio station combo in Demopolis with Dave Baird. He returned to television in October 1989 as chief weatherman at Birmingham's WBRC-TV. At the same time, he enrolled in Mississippi State University's meteorology program, earning the NWA and AMS seals of approval upon his graduation. Spann left WBRC in 1996 in a move that made local headlines. WBRC had just been purchased by News Corporation and was dropping its longtime affiliation with ABC in favor of Fox. Spann, a devout Southern Baptist, was unhappy with Fox's then-steady diet of reality shows and other programming. Spann followed several of his former WBRC colleagues to the newly formed ABC 33/40, which had merged WCFT with WJSU-TV in Anniston and a new low-power repeater in Birmingham, and had replaced WBRC as Birmingham's ABC affiliate. He has been at ABC 33/40 ever since. Spann is the founder of The Weather Factory (formerly The Weather Company) which provides broadcast weather forecasts for a number of radio stations and weather data for industrial and business clients. Spann was the 33rd person in America to receive the AMS distinction as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist. Spann remained on television for ten hours during a tornado warning for western Jefferson County on April 8, 1998. An F5 tornado struck Oak Grove High School before 8:00 that evening. The next day, Spann spoke from a helicopter about the warning and the high school's damage. Beginning in 2007, Spann could be heard by listeners of the Rick and Bubba Show, a popular syndicated radio show based in Birmingham but heard across the country, mainly in the Southeast. Spann's tenure began when the show switched flagship stations in Birmingham to WZZK-FM, where Spann's forecasts had been heard for some time beforehand. He is also the chairman and one of the founders of AllWorship.com, a non-profit organization webcasting three streaming radio stations which feature worship music in English and Spanish. The organization grew out of WRRS/Reality Radio, a commercial FM radio station that broadcast Contemporary Christian music in the Birmingham market from 2000 to 2001. In 2004, Spann hosted a television special about severe weather safety. He interviewed Goshen United Methodist Church's F4 tornado survivors of March 27, 1994 including the former pastor, Kelly Clem and her husband, Dale. Later, he spoke about the tragedy and safety instructions to Brian E. Peters, Warning Coordination Meteorologist from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Calera's Shelby County Airport. He is also the host of WeatherBrains, a weekly weather podcast and board chairman of the Children's Hospital of Alabama. Formerly a longtime member of Hunter Street Baptist Church, Spann is the children's Sunday School teacher at Double Oak Community Church outside Birmingham. Some of the notable events covered by Spann include: Hurricane Frederic (one week after he signed on in September 1979) 1982 Ice Storm (one of the most crippling ice storms in Alabama history) 1989 Huntsville F4 Tornado (one month into his stint at WRBC) 1993 Storm of the Century (Alabama experienced the heaviest snow in record) 1994 Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak (20 people were killed at the Goshen United Methodist Church in Cherokee County) 1995 Hurricane Opal April 8, 1998 Tornado (an F5 tornado that devastated Oak Grove, AL) December 16, 2000 Tornado (an F4 Tornado that severely damaged the southern side of the city of Tuscaloosa) November 24, 2001 Tornado Outbreak (two dozen tornadoes touched down, the most severe being an F3 in southern Lamar county) November 10, 2002 Tornado Outbreak (two F3 Tornadoes paralleled one another in Fayette, Winston, Walker, and Cullman counties) Hurricane Ivan 2004 Hurricane Katrina 2005 Hurricane Dennis 2005 April 15, 2011 Tornado Outbreak (45 tornadoes struck Alabama, with seven fatalities occurring that day) April 27, 2011 Super Outbreak (62 tornadoes ravaged the state from 4 AM-10 PM that day, killing 252 people) January 28, 2014 Snowstorm April 28, 2014 Tornado Outbreak (close to two dozen tornadoes touched down, causing 2 fatalities in Alabama) 2020 Easter Tornado Outbreak (21 tornadoes touched down in Alabama)

When it comes to weather, there is always something new to learn - even if you’re a veteran meteorologist. WBRC Chief Meteorologist J-P Dice talks with Dr. Tim Coleman, a researcher at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, about wake lows. Wake lows are a high-wind weather event that aren’t very common but cause damage very similar to tornadoes. When a wake low made its way through the WBRC viewing area in late April 2020 it ripped up massive trees and destroyed homes, so J-P aims to shed some light on these high winds. With all the severe weather in the state combined with COVID-19 the state is in a situation like never before. JP Dice from WBRC joins the show today to talk about it all.
Beth Shelburne is a journalist who specializes in investigative long-form reporting on criminal justice and mass incarceration. Formerly a reporter with WBRC in Birmingham, AL, Beth left television news to focus full-time on amplifying the voices of those who are stuck inside the system and often silenced. Her recent essay on conditions inside the largest maximum security prison in the nation, “Angola’s Angst,” can be read in the Bitter Southerner. In this conversation, Beth shares wisdom from her friends and collaborators inside the system and honors the incredible odds they have overcome to develop emotionally and spiritually while imprisoned in a system not designed for rehabilitation. She taps her extensive knowledge of the systemic problems within the carceral state, and we discuss the pervasion of contraband, extortion and corruption, “tough on crime” culture, and three strikes laws (called the Habitual Felony Offender Act in Alabama) that can send people who commit non-violent offenses to prison for life. You can find Beth’s writing and documentary films at BethShelburne.com and IG @bshelburnebham. More podcasts where podcasts are found, on MauraJames.com and IG @maurajames. After a quick detour into the business of brewing, we’re diving back into bias—but from a completely different perspective. The morning presentations by Meister, Michelle Johnson, and Jenn Chen in New York introduced us to the effect of bias on the industry as people, influencing our career paths, who we hire as employees, how we treat our customers (and how they treat us), the places in which we choose to operate, and the impact on all of the communities we touch as an industry. This week’s video, presented by none-other than Tamper Tantrum Live veteran Matt Perger, examines how bias affects the other primary part of the coffee industry: our product. “Lemon Juice”, in true Perger fashion, doles out some much-needed tough love in an incredibly approachable way, all whilst looking at how cognitive bias affects everything from our equipment choice to our roasting style. This is, as Matt suggested, truly a look at “five ways to push past your inner Dunning-Kruger”—and a great impetus to think about what we can do to improve coffee quality in the coming years. New Year’s resolution, anyone? --Everything Matt does is focused on consistency, accuracy and deliciousness. People around the world know him as the Barista who popularised using the EK43 grinder for espresso, sieved coffee grinds for uniform particle size in the WBrC and designed his own tamper (amongst other things). He's the World Brewers Cup Champion for 2012, and has placed 2nd (2013) and 3rd (2011) in the World Barista Championships. In 2014, he was the Coffee in Good Spirits World Champion. Matt is a partner at Sensory Lab in Melbourne Australia where he come up with new and exciting ideas to make coffee better. Barista Hustle is where he shares everything he's learnt so far, interacting with the Barista community and exploring the cutting edge of our craft.

Here’s one for you, brew geeks: tucked in amongst the Cup North talks that tackled service, communication, and innovation, Gordon Howell’s “Challenging the way we brew coffee for the better” is a staunch—dare we say confrontational?—look at how we are currently brewing coffee and why it needs to change. There have been some mutterings and murmurings about the age of the brewing standards we use around the edges of Tamper Tantrum for quite some time (David Walsh, Mike Strumpf), but this is the first time anyone has tackled it head on for their presentation. We hope Gordon’s thorough approach to examining this subject inspires you to think before you brew! -- Gordon, along with his wife Marie, owns and runs four businesses in York that are all geared to his love for quality coffee, beer and spirits: Harlequin coffee and tea house, The Attic, Attic by night, and the Northern academy of Coffee. He’s incredibly active on the world competition scene, having represented the UK in both the 2015 WBrC (7th Place) and the 2013 WCIGS (3rd Place) as well as acting as a sensory judge in the UKBC (2013 & 2014) and UK CIGS (2014 & 2105). As an SCAE AST in the dark arts of barista skills and brewing, Gordon mainly focuses on a one to one tailored approach geared to helping other coffee professionals gain intermediate and professional accreditation His wealth of experience in the world of speciality coffee from the day to day operation of running a coffee shop to competing, judging and teaching at the highest level is complemented by his training in hospitality management (BSc) and export management (MSc). He also assists WCE with competition development as well as being a Dalla Corte Pro.
