This presentation by Dr. Roger Nam, titled “Family, Migration, and Economic Survival in the Hebrew Bible: What If ‘Honor Your Father' Isn't the Whole Story?” was recorded on October 7, 2025. The lecture is part of the 2025 conference “Biblical Theology in Asian America: Family, Migration, and Divine Presence,” presented by the Center for Asian American Christianity at Princeton Theological Seminary and co-hosted with Fuller Theological Seminary's Chinese Studies Center. You can learn more about this conference here: https://ptsem.edu/academics/centers/center-for-asian-american-christianity/btiaa2025/.Description: “This opening talk situates the Hebrew Bible's complex family stories—sibling rivalries, migration journeys, and household economies—within their ancient Near Eastern context. These narratives emerged not from abstract theology but from lived realities of cultural displacement. For Asian American communities navigating filial expectations, generational rifts, and economic pressure, these biblical dynamics feel strikingly familiar—and at times, deeply subversive. This session frames the day's conversations by offering historical grounding and interpretive tools for reading family and faith with greater depth.”Roger S. Nam, PhD is Professor of Hebrew Bible and Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Emory University/Candler School of Theology. His scholarship bridges Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern history, with a focus on how economic and social realities shaped biblical texts and communities. He is the author of multiple books, most recently, The Theology of the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah (Cambridge University Press, 2024). Before entering academia, he served as a pastor in Seoul, Korea and worked as a financial analyst in the Silicon Valley. This year marks his 18th year as a professor in theological education.Time Stamps:00:37 Introducing Dr. Roger Nam01:39 Dr. Nam's Unconventional Journey02:38 Family and Migration in Ancient Israel04:44 Parallels Between Ancient Israel and Asian America08:00 The Migration Experience of Abraham24:12 Economic Survival in Ancient Israel30:15 Family Life and Honor in Ancient Israel31:55 The Bible Through an Asian American Lens35:57 Conclusion: Let the Bible Read YouPhoto by David McLenachan on Unsplash This is a public episode. What is the Bible all about? If this isn't your first time visiting Haventoday.org, then you may already know our answer: Jesus. On today's episode of the Great Stories podcast, you'll get introduced to Dr. Michael Williams, author of How to Read the Bible Through the Jesus Lens. In this conversation, he explains that Scripture comes into much better focus when we realize how every book of the Bible has an identifiable theme that is ultimately fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus. By the end, you'll know how to easily find Jesus in challenging books like Joel, Ruth, Hosea, Daniel, Isaiah, and Philemon.
Jordan Raynor sits down with Haejin Shim Fujimura, Attorney, to about the wild story of how a painting served as a wardrobe-like portal into the Kingdom, seeing Adam and Eve as lawyers before the Fall, and how she sees her work fighting human trafficking AND her work as a civil litigator as Kingdom work.Links Mentioned:Haejin Shim Fujimura on LinkedInHaejin Shim Fujimura on InstagramShim & AssociatesJordan RaynorThe Creator in YouI Am Culture CareEmbers InternationalInternational Justice MissionSurprised by HopeArt and Faith: A theology of MakingSeeking God's Face: Praying with the Bible Through the Year

*LIVING SEEDS DEVOTIONALS* (Life Transforming Words) Day:123|Tuesday|May 4th| 21 ************************************** *CATCH THE ANOINTING* _Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows_ Ps 45:7(KJV) What is the anointing? What is essence? We are in a wicked world and the whole world lieth in wickedness (1Jobn 5:19). I once read a book by a popular man of God, the book is titled Catch the anointing. I read that, several men of God that he came in contact with were doubting the call of God upon his life to the extent that he resolved to catch the anointing from God and other distance men, he further said the anointing is not what you learn but what you catch, just how Elisha catch it from Elijah. Beloved, you need to catch the anointing for maximum operation. The anointing is the empowering, empowerment of the Holy spirit for supernatural accomplishments. Being anointed is not for funfair, but for a purpose, the fulfilling your assignment. what distinguish us from other religion is the anointing for supernatural, the anointing of the Holy spirit is what distinguished Christianity from other religious gathering because God himself is involved. Burdens are lifted by the anointing (Isaiah 10:27), divine speed is guarantee when you are anointed(Psalm 45:6-7). Elijah operated upon the prophetic wind of the Spirits by out running king Ahab(1King 18:46). The hand of the Lord is an evidence of the anointing upon Elijah. You need to be anointed with oil of gladness above your fellows. God found David and anointed him as kind in (1Sam. 16: 1-15). David became a mighty man of valour. What will make you stand tall and a high flyer is not to learn the anointing but to catch the anointing from God. Shalom!!! *SHALL WE PRAY* .... Father in the name of Jesus, locate me with your special oil of anointing. *THE BIBLE THROUGH* 2king 9-10 *MEDITATION* Jere. 1:1-10 *SURE PROPHECY.* I prophecy into your life and destiny from today the oil you needed from God to operate in dimensions, shall come upon you now in Jesus name. *Gifted Hands!!!* ©Apostle Thomas & Testimony Adegbile. Listen as we uncover how storytelling serves as a primary coping mechanism for traumatic experience. We discuss how sacred texts have been used to process trauma. Who knew the oppressed made their voices heard through religious literature? How can we understand this storytelling as a healing endeavor? What stories do we tell ourselves to cope with the past and engage with the future? Join us as we strive to answer these questions. Focus Virtues: Curiosity, Awareness, Sensitivity, Vulnerability. My conversation with Sarah highlights the virtues of awareness, curiosity, sensitivity, and vulnerability. Bringing awareness to the fact that everyone experiences trauma and in turn processes trauma in their own unique way; helps us to understand the humanity in others. The “why” behind other's behaviors and identities may be rooted in some trauma processing mechanism; perhaps an act of storytelling they are telling themselves in order to move on from their own traumatic past. After solidifying such awareness, a process of curiosity as well as sensitivity to the past experiences of others helps us to see past surface level impressions and understand the spirit of another more deeply. Further, cultivating vulnerability and wonder about what stories we tell ourselves to cope with the trauma of our own past, helps us to tune into our deeper selves. This reflective process is a coping mechanism in and of itself. We all experience trauma on some level. Awareness of this trauma, as well as curiosity, and sensitivity about how we deal with it, helps to thread out our ego's protective layer and find our true self beneath the surface. Becoming vulnerable about the narratives we create for ourselves, helps to create a safe space for us to share our stories, and for others to do the same. Note: While Esther's Shushan likely refers to Susa, one of the four Persian capitals, the way in which the city is described--most especially with regards to who is in power and how the city is being run--indicates that Esther's Shushan is fictional. Reading the Bible Through the Gospel - Galatians 4:21-31
We know that we want to hunger and thirst for God, but sometimes we just... don't. And yet, each day we spend on this earth is a holy opportunity to live in an eternally meaningful way. If we fail to do that, the opportunity is lost forever. If we allow ourselves to wrap up in the wrong things, the implications are profound. If we allow ourselves to love the world more than our Savior, the results are tragic. So, is there a way to cultivate desire for God in our lives where it lacks? We think so! In this episode I'm so excited to introduce you to a very important person in my life. She is one of my long-time best friends, and I think you'll quickly see why I count her as such a blessing. Please join us as we talk about: the principle of discipline before desire how to really find time to spend with God as a busy mother or individual the fruit born in our lives through patient endurance Additional Resources Kristi's chronological reading plan: A tried and true Bible reading plan for the linear thinker. :) Why You Should Read the Bible Through in a Year in 2018 blog post-- Similar to this podcast in a summarized, consumable and sharable format.
