This week we head to an iconic Michigan destination, known throughout the Midwest as a place for old-fashioned, one-of-a-kind fun, with an amazing dinner theater experience, and some of the best turkey dinners you'll find anywhere. It's Cornwell's Turkeyville, and we visited for the very first time—and we can assure you, it won't be the last.On the show, you'll get to meet owner/operator Patti Cornwell and her daughter and "retirement plan" Elyse Bibbings. Together, these women are running quite the production on their family farm located at the crossroads of 94 & 69 just outside of Marshall, Michigan. From an all-turkey menu, which includes the classic dinner, new favorites like the turkey grilled cheese (get it on the cheese bread please!) to an old-fashioned soda fountain featuring house-made ice cream, you'll be eating well when you visit. Elyse also offers the very cool Simpler Life classes through the winter where you can learn to bake bread, how to can, uncover the mysteries of sourdough, and learn to decorate cookies. We'll also introduce you to Dexter Bringham, producing artistic director for the dinner theater at Turkeyville, where they host a 47 week season of Broadway quality shows featuring actors from across the country. On November 7 they'll be kicking off their holiday show, the Winter Wonderettes which will run through December 21.Turkeyville is the type of place to go with family and friends to create new traditions or relive fantastic old memories. Go for dinner, but stay for more. And don't miss out on their gift shop, it is a great place to find a unique gift this holiday season. We also learned that the gift shop is Patti and Elyse's favorite thing at Turkeyville, their passion project so to speak, so you know it's full of lots of good things, including the cutest little stuffed turkey I had to get for Gonzo's newest baby turkey.

We all seek advancing technology yet we also all share a yearning for a simpler life. Technology can help us be more efficient and effective, but it can also rob us from inner peace at the same time. It is important to disconnect sometimes and enjoy the simplicities of life. It's simple to be happy, but it is becoming more and more difficult to be simple.
Hey Friend As you know, I'm very passionate about personal development and growth mindset and I want to give you some simple tips today to help you get out of the scarcity mode and start living your dreams of a stress free simpler life! Imagine your mind is like a garden. In this garden, there are two main types of mindsets: fixed and growth. Picture a garden with rigid, unchanging plants. People with a fixed mindset believe that their abilities, intelligence, and talents are set in stone. They might think, "I'm just going to stay doing what I'm doing because it is comfortable even though they don't love it," or "I'll never be able to learn that or do anything else Now, envision a garden full of thriving, flourishing plants. Individuals with a growth mindset understand that their abilities can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning. They see challenges as opportunities to grow and improve. Instead of saying, "I can't do this or I'll stay stuck doing what I'm doing," they think, "I can't do this yet, but with practice and perseverance, I'll get there." In essence, a growth mindset is all about embracing the idea that our potential is not fixed or limited. We have the capacity to learn, adapt, and improve throughout our lives. Here are a few key points to remember about growth mindset: Instead of avoiding challenges, people with a growth mindset see them as opportunities to learn and develop new skills. They understand that success often requires effort and perseverance. Even when faced with setbacks, they keep going and view failure as a chance to learn and grow. Rather than feeling discouraged by criticism or feedback, individuals with a growth mindset use it as valuable information to guide their improvement. By embodying a growth mindset, we can inspire those around us to adopt a similar outlook on life, fostering a culture of resilience, curiosity, and continuous growth. Growth mindset is like tending to a garden of possibilities. By nurturing our belief in our ability to learn and grow, we can cultivate a more fulfilling and enriching life journey. Start your growth mindset with these practical tips. Practice gratitude journaling, reframing negative thoughts or setting realistic goals. Celebrate small victories along the way. Appreciate the progress, no matter how small it may seem because this can help build momentum and motivation for continued growth. Identify your roadblocks or obstacles that may hinder progress towards a simpler, thriving life and learn as much as you can Join a community of like minded people! I have an online community called Simple Homesteading for Christians and I will link that below. I also do a monthly homesteading gathering if you are in central MN and would like to join us And one of the most important things you can do is to maintain a positive and uplifting attitude! I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and get out of the scarcity mindset so you can do what God has called you to do and live with less stress doing what you love! Love ya friend! Hello There is something freeing about having time freedom. I remember when I did daycare and the income looked good until I subtracted all the expenses and when you divide that by working 40 or 50 hours per week plus the time for shopping for food and daycare items, I made less than minimum wage and the value of our house went down because of wear and tear! Most daycare providers realized that they can't get ahead and without having benefits or retirement it didn't make sense so now it is hard to find home daycares. There are just so many more opportunities for you to make changes so you don't have to trade time for money anymore! We haven't retired my husband yet, but that is the plan eventually!! Right now, all my grandkids live within 2 hours, so if they need something, have programs, or need me to watch them, guess what-I can do it because over 20 years ago, I made that as one of my goals and priorities as a Grandma! You can change your life without having to sacrifice what you value! You are not going to make a full time income selling eggs on your little homestead unless you sell 20000 or so a year, but there are so many other ways to make money right from home without sacrificing time! Blessings! Hey Friend! Homesteading can be a fulfilling lifestyle, but it can also be challenging to make a living solely through homesteading activities. However, there are several ways to generate income while homesteading: Sell your produce: Homesteaders can grow a variety of crops, fruits, and vegetables to sell at farmer's markets, local stores, or online marketplaces. You can also consider starting a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, where customers can purchase a share of your harvest at the beginning of the season and receive a weekly box of fresh produce. You can sell eggs and sourdough, but those are things you would have to sell alot of to make a living, but a great way to bring in extra income! Raise livestock: You can raise animals such as chickens, cows, pigs, goats or sheep to sell their meat, milk, eggs, or fiber. You can also breed and sell livestock, or offer services like pet boarding, training, or shearing. You can create value-added products such as cheese, butter, jam, honey, soap, or candles using your harvest or livestock. These products have a higher profit margin and can be sold online or at craft fairs. You can host workshops, tours, or retreats on your homestead to teach people about homesteading skills, farming practices, or sustainable living. You can also offer lodging, camping, or glamping options for visitors. You can offer your skills and expertise as a freelance writer, photographer, web designer, or consultant to other homesteaders or businesses in your niche. If your homestead doesn't generate enough income, you can work with a company until you are making enough on your own or you can sell products from a company you use and align with your values. This is how I was able to transition from nursing. Growing a business while working full time lets you transition out of a job as you replace that income It's essential to assess your skills, resources, and market demand before starting a homesteading business. You may need to obtain licenses, permits, or certifications depending on your business type and location. You should also develop a marketing plan, set realistic goals, and manage your finances carefully. Love you friend! Erin Bagniewski left a corporate consulting job after 12 years to find more meaning in her profession. The decision led her to Zambia, where she served as a volunteer teacher. Since then, she has become the Executive Director of Africa Strong, an organization created to empower and educate the people of Uganda and across sub-Saharan Africa. Erin shares what she learned from the students in Zambia and the connections she made. Thank you so much!!!!! There are so many benefits to living a simpler life and after living the chaotic life for many years, I can't even imagine going back to that. I never have guilt that I am unable to attend events and activities because now my schedule is flexible and I don't have to miss out on anything and there is just an everyday enjoyment to life because my focus is on the things that matter to me and that I value. I want you to have this pure joy every day as well so here are 6 benefits you will enjoy when you slow down and live with more intention. By simplifying your life, you can eliminate many of the things that cause you stress, such as clutter, excess possessions, and a hectic schedule. This can help you feel calmer and more relaxed. How would you like to reduce some of your stress? Simplifying your life can also free up more time for the things that really matter, such as spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies and interests, and spending time doing things you enjoy. Who wouldn't enjoy spending time your way. Living a simpler life often means spending less money on things you don't really need, which can result in significant financial savings over time and I'm sure you are looking to save money right now since groceries and regular expenses keep increasing. When you have fewer distractions in your life, you may find it easier to focus on what's important and make decisions with more clarity and purpose. You may have more time to prepare healthy meals, exercise, and get enough rest when you simplify which will help with overall better health. Living a simpler life often means consuming less and producing less waste, which can have positive environmental impact. Getting started on a simpler life can be a gradual process, but here are some tips to help you begin: Declutter: Start by getting rid of things you no longer need or use. This can help you create more physical space and mental clarity. Donate, sell, or recycle items that are still in good condition and focus on keeping the things that are truely important and meaningful to you. Streamline and Simplify your schedule: Take a look at your daily schedule and see if there are any activities or commitments you can cut back on or eliminate altogether. Prioritize the things that bring you joy and fulfillment, and let go of the rest. Focus on saying "no" to commitments and activities that don't align with your values or goals so you can make sure you are doing things that are important to you. Practice mindfulness and take time to be present and fully engaged in the moment. This can help you appreciate the simple things in life and reduce stress and anxiety. Reduce screen time and digital distractions: Limit your use of technology and social media to help you disconnect. Focus on being present in the moment and engaging with the people and activities around you Practice gratitude: Take time to appreciate and be thankful for the things you have in life. This can help you find contentment and satisfaction with a simpler lifestyle. Explore living with less and finding joy in the simple things in life. Simplifying your life is a process and it won't happen overnight. Start with small steps and be gentle with yourself as you make changes. Over time, you may find that living a simpler life brings greater joy and fulfillment to your daily life. Dr. Charles Blackstock continues his series on the Simpler Life, talking about Faith.
Hello This last week with all of our grandkids here, it really reminded me of the reason I do what I do! On Friday after having a fish fry the night before with my parents, kids, and all the grandkids,I had to think……what day is it? Our closest Grandkids are 30 minutes away with the others about 1.5 hours away, so because we don't live really close, it doesn't always happen that we have everyone here for most of the week or for dinner on the weekdays, but it sure was fun! I have always loved being able to be flexible, but when my husband and I worked full time, there was little flexibility and we wouldn't be able to take all the kids and get to all their events during the week if we hadn't chosen this different path. This week the kids had fun ice skating and our 6 year old was so excited she was able to skate and do twirls instead of shuffling behind a chair, they went snowmobiling, sledding, ziplining, helped with the goats and chickens, went to a homeschool valentine's party, baked with us and it was another week of memories. We sure cherish all the time we get with our Grandkids and family. You can't ever take back these days and we have never regretted raising our own kids and I am so so forever grateful to be able to help out whenever we are needed with Grandkids too! This got me thinking about you. Do you have joy in your everyday life or are you rushing through every day just wishing for more peace and time to enjoy life? Are you wishing you could slow down and live a simpler life? Do you want to be able to be at home and raise your own kids or be available for grandkids? What is holding you back? Is it finances? Do you just have too much debt to ever think about living on one income? If this is your reason, I want you to take a good look at your situation and where you can make some changes. When you think about possessions, remember Proverbs 22:7 - The rich rule over the poor and the borrower is slave to the lender. With debt - you are a slave-what does that mean to you? I realize each and every one of you are in a different situation, but if God has put this calling in your heart to live a simpler life, He will help you. You do have to do the work, but don't forget that anything is possible with God. Sometimes you have to make a different career choice-there has never been a better time to work from home or start a side hustle to replace your full time income. With the internet, you can reach people with your gifts all around the world! You have to think out of the box! You may feel stuck in your job because you spent alot of money and time in college doing what you do, but you don't love it or it is stressful. I want you to remember, you have choices! You may be doing what you do because you feel the need to keep up with friends but you are exhausted and you are not loving what you do. Start looking inside yourself and take the time to think about what really matters to you. Is it making memories or is it having the top of the line material items. You can't take any of that to heaven with you, so why are you burning the candle at both ends just trying to keep up? You can only do that so long! I would love for you to email me at monica@claimingsimplicity.com and tell me where you are struggling and what I can help you with - I also have a few 15 minute discovery calls left this month to help you get started on your simple living path because it is so rewarding and I don't think it is something you will ever regret. Whether you want to start saving money, learn about raising your own food or just learn how to make simple food from scratch or your own non toxic household products, I can help you. Shoot me a message-I would be happy to help you if I can! There really is nothing so special as being able to make memories. If I die tomorrow, I sure hope that my Grandkids learn enough from me to grow deep in their faith as they grow up because I believe that in the times we are living now, that they need to be equipped and strong in their faith with all that is thrown at them. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Think about your own walk….are you growing in your faith so that your cup can overflow into others while you are making memories? I think this is so important! Are you ready to make a change this year or are you going to continue to live as you are right now? I want you to live this abundant life God has for us. Welcome to another week of Claiming Simplicity Are you wanting to pursue more simplicity in your life? Many years ago, I realized I wanted to spend my days with more meaning and not consuming and competing. Pursuing a simplified life can be just as exhausting at times as pursuing the fast one because it doesn't just happen on its own. You still have to manage balancing family life, work life, and personal life—while trying to maintain a slower life. You may have to learn new skills from budgeting differently to learning how to cook from scratch or preserving food and there is a learning curve if you don't know how to do these things. It is so very rewarding though! In my current season, serving my husband, children and grandchildren calls for most of my energy, so my business is often secondary. There's a lot of No in my vocabulary right now because we say yes to better things, but with each new season, that will always be changing. I have 2 daughters still at home that homeschool and are in sports year round, so that takes much of my focus because I know that season will be over in 6 years and I want them to know they are my priority right now. I also work my businesses early in the morning and free hours that we are not running with kids. Kids are only young for so long and I don't want to miss it. I don't want you to miss out either! So what are you doing to make a change? If you don't make a plan and start, you will be exactly where you were last year! Please please please make a plan to learn something new and begin to move forward so when you look at your goals for this year, you can look back and be proud of yourself! I want to give you some skills because this is what my brand is all about! Decide what a slower life and simpler living looks like to you. How many hours will you spend at a job? Will you raise your own food or preserve your own food? Do you want to get some animals to become more self-sufficient? Do you want to spend more quality time with your family? Do you want to live on less money and stop over consuming? This is the most important step because living a simple life looks very different for each person and if you don't know what it looks like to you, you will never be able to attain this lifestyle. Research and application. Like I always say….it is not a race, so you have to start slow so that you do not get overwhelmed. This is an amazing journey and it doesn't happen instantly~there are skills to learn, research, and testing as to what works and you need to figure out what you enjoy. It is definitely a different lifestyle than than the fast pace the main stream is used to and there is a totally different mindset when you live this enjoyable life. You don't feel the need to have everything the next person has and it is so much easier to go without things and not feel bad about it. There is so much support as simple living is becoming more popular and you will notice that more people want to save money and learn how to be more frugal. There are so many more resources than there ever used to be! Work on getting out of debt because it will be hard to live slower and enjoy the things you value if you have alot of debt. First, stop buying unnecessary items and think about each purchase. Do you really need it or is there a different option that is cheaper? You also need to know why you want to get out of debt. Start by seeing if there is anything you have that you don't really need and that you can sell. Can you have a cheaper vehicle so you don't have a payment? Do you need the camper you have if you owe money on it? Think about all the extra snowmobiles, boats or items that you could do without or go a cheaper route. After that, start with your smallest bill to largest debt amount and pay extra on the smallest amount until it is paid off and then go to the next debt tacking on the amount from the debt you paid off until all debt is paid. Dr. Charles Blackstock continues teaching on love in his series on the Simpler Life.
Dr. Charles Blackstock begins a new series, "The Simpler Life."
Welcome Friend! I love love love to talk about all things natural, homemade, and living a simplified life, so today, I wanted to talk about what exactly homesteading is because there seems to be so many different ideas. Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency, so homesteading life for each of us can be so very different, so now you know why people have so many different thoughts about it!! You can live in an apartment, city, or in the middle of nowhere and you can still homestead no matter what your situation is. You can live a simple life with little money, so if this homesteading lifestyle is something you dream of, why not get started now? If you live in an apartment or the thought of homesteading overwhelms you, begin your homesteading journey by learning simple ways to prepare and preserve food. If you don't know where to start, I suggest you start by replacing foods you buy at the store that you can make. Honestly, if you are worried about homesteading and working full time, the things that I suggest you learn first are super simple and not time consuming at all! Dry mixes, cream soups, and breads are a fabulous place to start, but honestly the possibilities are endless as to what you can do to become more self-sufficient!! Homesteading can actually save you alot of money when you start switching out homemade food for convenient foods, and it is alot healthier. Something else you can do is try to grow some garden plants indoors - start small and this will give you encouragement to possible someday have a bigger scale garden. I enjoy gardening, but many years the weeds have taken over, and it wasn't good, but we do have a simple solution now with a method that automatically waters and I have very little weeds to pull, but I had much trial and error over the years. Some plants I can grow really well, and some plants I can't and sometimes it will depend on the year, so please please please do not get discouraged, use it as a learning lesson. One lesson I learned a few years ago is that we will never use horse poop as fertilizer-we had weeds and thistles take over and it was out of control. If you live in the city and want to start with animals, find out if you are allowed to have backyard chickens! They are a really easy way to start with animals and produce your own food. We have about 25 free range chickens and I almost feel like I need to hide my eggs with the price of them right now! We just raised our price at the beginning of the year and we are still cheaper than the store- fresh homegrown is the only way to go! Chickens are such an easy animal to begin with and my favorite thing about them is that we can feed and water them and still go away for the weekend and they are fine. You don't have to make a fancy coop either. Depending on where you live and how harsh your winters are, you do have to take that into consideration though to make sure they are warm enough. We buy a dozen chicks every Spring or every other spring so that we always have fresh eggs when some of them stop laying. This year, we are going to get a rooster and try to hatch our own chickens, so I will have to let you know how that goes. We have had chickens for several years, but this will be our first year trying to hatch our own. That is the best thing about Homesteading-many learning experiences, but you have the flexibility to do it when it works for you-take it slow and enjoy the journey! It really is an amazing life! This is truely an amazing lifestyle and it is so good for our children and grandchildren to learn these skills. So many people think that it costs alot of money to get started, but it can actually save you money if you start small. It will also reduce overwhelm if you take it slow. Learn one skill and then move to the next - and remember that you can keep it very simple like I have! Jade Miles and her husband Charlie Showers run Black Barn Farm, a biodiverse orchard, nursery and workshop space in north east Victoria. Black Barn Farm is a magnet for visitors to learn about permaculture, homesteading, as well as pick-their-own from some of the 98 varieties of heritage fruit and berries. In this episode, Jade walks us through the concept of Futuresteading (the tenants of living like tomorrow matters), being a twilight owl (letting the day go in the evening and having time to reset), and why she plans her year around six seasons instead of four. This episode is a replay with the brilliant Alain de Botton. He is a writer of multiple books described as a ‘philosophy of everyday life.' His first book, Essays in Love, was published when he was twenty-three and went on to sell millions of copies. He is also the co-founder of The School of Life, one of my favourite platforms, which is an education space dedicated to a new vision of education, emotional intelligence and self-knowledge. The School of Life's latest book, is called A Simpler Life: a guide to greater serenity, ease, and clarity and came out in January 2022, which I really recommend.
