In this reflection, we revisit a recording from May 31, 2020 with the late Pono Sam as he shares his thoughts on haʻahaʻa, the practice of becoming empty, humble, and open. Through reflections on mindfulness and listening, he reminds us that some of our greatest insights can emerge if we create space for them through presence. Welcome to the Above the Sides podcast! Join us on our journey to uncover what it means to think, act, and live aloha. The inspiration for this podcast is the late Pono Shim, former President and CEO of the Oʻahu Economic Development Board. His stories capture the essence of what it means to live aloha. He made it known that aloha is a lifestyle. It is not a solution to problems, a marketing brand or to be used as an advantage over anyone else. Aloha is to be honored and practiced. The name of this podcast is in reverence of Hawaiʻi's Queen Liliʻuokalani, who wrote: "To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable – that is Aloha. All things in this world are two; in heaven there is but One.” Through these episodes, we seek to find that singular perspective, the one that is "above the sides" as we strive for universal peace. We welcome you to pause with us as we share the stories and voices of Hawai'i business leaders, educators and community members who have chosen to be lifelong students of aloha. Next week, May 22-27, 2026, is our worship and arts conference “The Beauty of Japan・The Beauty of Heaven”. This five-day event is the biggest we have ever put on. Hundreds will join us here in downtown Tokyo with easy access to all the beautiful art and culture of our city. We will have over 30 presenters with short talks, testimonies, music, films, discussions, networking, prayer walks and activities around the city, an art gallery, and so much more. In this event, we celebrate all the nations being united across different languages and cultures to worship God together, and the taste of that we are receiving even now here in Japan. Even if you can't be here, please pray for us, that God would do a mighty work here, leading people in worship, growing his kingdom, and building deeper connections between churches and ministries. Welcome to the Art, Life, Faith Podcast, and I’m your host, Roger Lowther. This episode, I had the honor of sitting down with Haijin and Makoto Fujimura to celebrate the launch of their new book, “Beauty and Justice: Creating A Life of Abundance and Courage”. Haijin is the founder and managing partner of Shim & Associates Law Firm. She is also the founder of Embers International, developing the programs and partnerships to protect, restore, and empower the victims of injustice. Mako is well-known as an artist, writer, and speaker, who has also had a big influence on my life and on the ministries of Community Arts Tokyo. Mako was kind enough to sit down with me after the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster here in Japan, and listen to my heart, and suggest that I start this arts organization. So he is not only a long-time friend of this ministry, but one of the people who help it to get started in the first place. In this conversation, Haijin and Mako urge us to not lose sight of the new creation, where the pursuit of beauty is an important part of true restoration, that working for justice is a working toward that perfect shalom that God has promised to bring into the world. After our conversation, they led one of our Art, Life, Faith events. So many people came from outside our usual networks, and all of us there received renewed inspiration to go out into the city and make a difference, to make the vision presented in the talk a reality in our communities. This combination of justice and beauty is so important, and if you want to know more about it you can read their book and watch the event we recorded, which is now on YouTube. Now, here's our conversation. Roger I’m sitting here with Haejin and Mako Fujimura for an event we’re doing tonight celebrating the release of their new book, Beauty x Justice. Thank you both for being here and being willing to talk with me. Mako Absolutely, excited to be here. Haejin Thank you for having us. Roger So, this topic is really interesting to me. This is the Art, Life, Faith Podcast. We believe that art isn’t just something that’s meant to be decorative or something if you have time to do, but it really affects every part of our lives and can change societies and people. And so to be able to talk about justice and what that looks like, I think is really fascinating. Can you tell us a little bit about this book? Haejin This book is a result of Mako bugging me for months to do something that I wanted to do but was kind of putting aside. So I’m really glad that he encouraged me to write this book together. This book shares with the world what it means to understand beauty in the context of justice and vice versa, because we believe that beauty and justice are essentially two sides of the same coin. Of the Gospel. We need both beauty and justice, not as parallels but as an integrated whole, to have the kind of shalom that God intended us to have from the very beginning that we have lost. Thankfully, God not only gave us beauty, but God is beauty. God not only commanded every single one of us to seek justice, not just to lawyers or advocates, but he himself is also justice, right? So when we think about beauty and justice coming together, we kind of wanted to share a little bit about our life as a married couple, because essentially all my life, even way before I met Mako, or before we wrote this book together. I have been working through justice to pursue beauty, and Mako has all his life, as just an incredibly anointed artist, been pursuing justice. And when we got together, we were able to really name it, and we started to share that message with other people in the context of exhibitions, speaking engagements, team-building occasions. And then we really felt like we needed to share this with a wider public. So that’s when we decided to write this book. Roger Yeah, it’s great. I feel like in some ways justice doesn’t have a very good image right now, just for various reasons. I guess I had forgotten how many times justice comes up in the Old Testament, and it’s always with this good image. God isn’t just just, but through it he gives a picture of shalom and what we are all really yearning for, right? Haejin Yeah, absolutely. Mako Yeah, justice is beautiful when it is fully manifested, and that’s always been God’s vision for the world. And yet we have created this tainted version of, or at least a version that we do not know the definition of what justice is. We talk about it all the time, but if you pursue asking the deeper question of what do you think justice is, not many people can answer it. We all know when something is lacking, you know, when we know justice is needed. But one of the things that I discovered in our journey together is that I have been speaking about beauty for all my life, it seems. I’ve written several books on it and have tried to help people understand why beauty is needed and essential for our lives. As an artist, as you noted, Roger, that many times the reaction that I get, well, that’s a nice thing to do, you know, when you have extra money or space and time. But especially for the church, it’s very hard to have a conversation where it is assumed that beauty is fundamentally not only necessary, but it is the most important characteristic of God’s presence in our lives. So it’s just a constant battle to help people understand that what I call utilitarian pragmatism has taken over all of our lives, not just the church, but our cultures. We tend to reduce the complexity of reality into simple false binaries so we can have a so-called understanding of it and have to take a position on it and create culture war-like rhetoric. And all of that comes out of this very simple premise that if God is beauty, and if God is love, then all things should flow out of that reality, including the church, including what we call the gospel, the good news, has to be filled with the abundance and extravagance of God’s love, has to feel like this is too good to be true. We will experience something that is so out of box, and extraordinary that we don’t have words to explain what that is. It just happens that when you experience true justice, not just restoration, you know, not just somebody who has been jailed wrongly is able to be released — that’s the first step in seeking justice — but when that person who has been trapped in whatever the circumstances because of injustice is able to see themselves as beautiful, that’s when the restoration of the whole person becomes real, not just that person but the whole community. And when you see that at work through Haejin’s work with Embers International, which she co-founded many years ago, we get to see actual examples of somebody who has gone through this very difficult process of restoration, and in their being, they hold this godly presence of beauty and justice together. And that’s when I, as an artist, I point to that reality and say, there is beauty here that I have been longing for as an artist to create, manifest into my work. And I continue to do that, but it really is that radical and that simple. Roger I was thinking about how you’re saying that people realizing what is justice for them, to realize their own beauty and to be able to see it. Mako, I think I’ve heard you say before how beauty can help us, artwork can help us kind of see, not just see, but experience the world in new ways. Like, I was thinking of To Kill a Mockingbird, to be able to go in someone else’s skin and walk around it for a little while. For example, in December I was giving a bunch of organ concerts around Japan. That usually happens at Christmas time, right? One of the pieces I was playing is one of my favorites by Maurice Durufle, a late French Romantic composer, called “Come, Creator Spirit.” And in it, in the middle of the work, there is this incredible dissonance and brokenness that just — it breaks your heart. And yet that isn’t the end. It starts with creation and gets to this breaking, and then he brings us beyond it to a hope, to a life where things can be glorious and rejoicing. And every time I play it — it’s a 20-minute piece, it’s a pretty long piece— to be able to celebrate what God is doing, it’s like I’m experiencing again and again through the artwork this truth. And so in a way, I think that’s like what you’re talking about. Haejin I think we forget to ask the question, what is the essence of all things, right? So what’s the essence of creating arts? What is the essence of justice? What is the essence of humanity? I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t think I was ever asked to think about the essence of things. It’s more of what is the quote-unquote the definition of it, what is going on, what is it, rather than what is the essence behind what we can just comprehend and observe on the surface. Because it’s a really hard question. You have to be willing to slow down to answer this question, right? You have to be willing to admit that we come with a lot of assumptions and biases. Otherwise, we cannot really get to the essence of things. So I think that, of course the industrialization, the pragmatism and individualism and all of those kind of things that in and of itself are not bad, but has kind of trained humanity to seek what is easy. Because we also have deep down in our hearts the lust for certainty, because uncertainty is so uncomfortable and it feels so risky and dangerous. But to think about the essence of beauty, arts, and justice and humanity, you have to be willing to be on the edge of the uncertainty and face the reality that there are things that we can’t quite comprehend. So, for example, we cannot comprehend God, right? If somebody says, I understand God, probably very little, if at all. Roger Exactly. Haejin But then we also know that God exists and God is love. We understand to a certain extent, and we get to experience the glimpses of his essence through beauty, especially through beautiful relationships when justice is in play. But I think we have to be willing, and especially the body of Christ, to be willing to really long for that essence of things. Roger Yeah, I think it helps too, that vision that you’re giving, that we can’t give up talking about it because we forget exactly what we’re searching for, what we’re yearning for. The image of what justice is can be so shaped by the news and the comfort of our situation in our part of the world, whatever it is. But to be able to keep giving people a vision for, like you do in the book, for the new creation. This is what we’re working toward and how to help people see it just coming out from a lot of different angles. It was really helpful. Mako Art and music has a capacity to do exactly that, to invoke this vista that most people have forgotten to look up to. And because we are so stressed and traumatized sometimes by realities of brokenness around us and within us, that we no longer actually lose the capacity to use our senses to listen well or to see something that is so beautiful that it’s mind-boggling and complex. And yet it is utterly needed for not just to seek the beauty, but to understand that as a standard of who we are as human beings is not built for this world in the sense that we get locked into our presuppositions and we get locked into what the media tells us. So we get locked into what the digital framework defines as reality. Our senses are such amazing instruments. When we behold something or when we truly do the hard work of deep listening, something happens where our brain rewires itself to regain that understanding of love at the heart of all complexities and chaos. And just like you mentioned in this music that you played, there’s this great tension in all beauty, and you can really try to find an answer that clarifies, or very much be certain that, you know, this is it, this is the good news of the Gospel, I want to give it to you, which is a fine notion, except that the mystery of the gospel, what Paul talks about, the mysterion, you know, the mystery of the gospel is far bigger than we think it is. And the more you understand it, the less you understand, but the more you understand it, the more that you are in awe of God’s presence. And art can give us that experience. So it doesn’t necessarily have to be Christian art because all human beings are created in the image of God, and however fallen we are, we have evidences throughout history of people who are horrible human beings, but they created amazing art that we can see, and as a viewer, we can glorify God with. So that kind of reality has always been part of human experience. And by the way, the church was the greatest patron to create this. And yet we have in recent times, because of pragmatic, utility and efficiency and industrial way that we began to measure what is good and successful, we lost sight of the transcendence and mystery of what human beings are capable of. Roger Thank you for reminding us of it in this book. We so need to keep hearing that message. I think we better stop there to get ready for the event tonight. But I am really looking forward to tonight. I’ve been getting a lot of emails. There’s going to be a lot of people here really looking forward to hearing what you have to say. So thank you so much for sharing this time with us. Haejin Thank you, Roger. Mako Thank you. Roger You’ve been listening to the Art, Life, Faith Podcast. You can continue the conversation by picking up your own copy of Beauty x Justice, available wherever you buy your books. As we say in Japan, “Ja, mata ne!” We’ll see you next time.

From Meeting Intelligence to Personal AI: How Digital Twins Are Reshaping How We WorkGuest: David Shim, Co-Founder and CEO at Read AIHost: Seth Earley, CEO at Earley Information SciencePublished on: April 27, 2026In this episode, Seth Earley speaks with David Shim, Co-Founder and CEO of Read AI, the fastest-growing meeting intelligence platform globally with over 5 million monthly active users. They explore how AI is moving beyond summarization toward recommendation and autonomous action, what it really means to build a digital twin grounded in your actual work history, and why the organizations getting the most from AI are the ones that treat it like a trainable intern rather than an out-of-the-box solution. David shares candid insights on agentic guardrails, data privacy, workforce transformation, and why access to personal AI may one day be considered a basic human right.Key Takeaways:AI is moving from task execution to recommendation - the next frontier is AI that proactively surfaces what you should do next.A digital twin is only as good as its context; weighting recent activity more heavily produces responses that actually reflect how you think and work today.Treating AI like a trainable intern - feeding it your emails, files, meetings, and tools - is what separates high-value users from disappointed ones.Native permissions are the cleanest foundation for digital twin privacy; building new rules for every edge case creates the vulnerabilities you are trying to avoid.Agentic guardrails should be built in from the start, not bolted on - autonomy without oversight erodes trust and adoption faster than it builds them. The tension between organizational IP and individual work style is real; your tone, voice, and preferences belong to you, even when the content belongs to the company.AI is a great leveler - emerging markets and individuals with access to these tools are already competing on equal footing with developed market counterparts.Insightful Quotes:"It's not plug and play today. You have to give it more context - your emails, your files, your CRM, your meetings. When you have all that data, now your intern is learning as you go, and it's pulling from your experience as the mentor." - David Shim"Your digital twin knows I hate meetings after three hours straight. After three hours, my engagement goes down, my sentiment goes down - so it puts in a buffer. That's the first part. Then it starts asking: what happens when people ask you a question?" - David Shim"You can't take the AI's version of the world as a representation of your version of the world. What's more valuable is your secret sauce, your knowledge, your expertise - you have to give it examples of your work, give it your perspective, not just take the LLM's." - Seth EarleyTune in to discover how digital twins and agentic AI are transforming the way individuals and organizations work - and what it takes to get real value from the technology before it gets ahead of you.LinksLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidshim/Website: https://read.aiThanks to our sponsors:VKTREarley Information ScienceAI Powered Enterprise Book

Today we have two guests from two different companies who have one shared conviction: AI works best when it amplifies people, not replaces them. Today we're joined by Rachana Rele, VP of Product Design for AI-native products at Adobe, and David Shim, co-founder and CEO of Read AI. Together, they're building very different products — but they share a vision of AI that removes the drudgery from creative work and makes room for the thinking that actually matters. In this conversation, we dig into some ideas that could genuinely change how you think about your work. David talks about this concept of “storage of intelligence” — the idea that your knowledge, your meeting history, your working style could all be captured and made available as a kind of digital twin that keeps working even when you're not in the room. And Rachana shares how Adobe is thinking about AI not as a one-shot creative output machine, but as a collaborative partner that helps teams break out of their own blind spots. We also push them on the harder questions — the job anxiety that's real right now in tech, the surveillance concerns that come with recording your work life, and where they each personally draw the line. Bios David Shim is Co-Founder and CEO of Read AI, an AI productivity platform focused on helping knowledge workers leverage the power of AI to improve how they collaborate, communicate, and get work done. The platform provides meeting insights, search, chat, and proactive recommendations for millions of professionals, integrating seamlessly with the tools teams already use. Read AI is pioneering the concept of the Digital Twin—AI that serves as a true extension of you, built on deep contextual understanding of how you work. Today, Read AI is trusted by teams at 90% of the Fortune 500 and in the past year, was recognized as a Top 10 AI Vendor for Enterprises by Brex, a Top 50 AI App by a16z and Mercury, and named one of Inc.'s Top 16 Companies to Watch Before founding Read AI, David served as CEO of Foursquare and previously founded Placed, which was acquired by Snap in 2017. In 2025, he was named CEO of the Year by Geekwire. Rachana Rele Rachana has spent 20+ years at the intersection of technology and human experience — figuring out not just what to build, but why it matters. At Adobe, she shapes the direction of new products, nurtures ideas from zero to something real, and helps early-stage businesses find their footing and grow. She's also a perpetual student — currently finishing an MBA at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, with an M.Eng. in HCI from Clemson and a B.E. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Mumbai.

In this episode of A Table in the Corner, Russel sits down with Korean-born chef Sepial Shim, whose quiet, wandering path through Cape Town's food world has taken her from cooking school to markets, pop ups and now a tiny sixteen seat restaurant in Woodstock called 'In the Meantime'.She reflects on arriving in South Africa more than two decades ago and training as an urban designer, only to discover that cooking offered a different way of expressing meaning without words. What followed was an unconventional journey: studying at Silwood alongside her son, opening a small restaurant in Salt River, building a cult following for Korean fried chicken at the Oranjezicht market, and experimenting with fermentation as both craft and philosophy. The conversation moves between those phases and the thinking behind Sepial's latest project: a deliberately small restaurant where she cooks each dish herself and serves guests directly. We talk about the tension between creativity and business, the financial cost of pursuing fermentation as a passion project, and the decision to trade scale for focus in the limited years she still plans to cook professionally.Along the way Shim reflects on Korean food traditions, Cape Town's evolving dining culture and the quiet satisfaction of watching diners recognise the care behind something as subtle as a clear beef short-rib broth. This is a thoughtful, candid conversation about wandering, learning and choosing to cook in a way that makes sense for one's life, told by a chef who understands that sometimes the most meaningful work happens in small rooms. www.rwm2012.comOn Instagram @a_table_inthecornerCover image sketched by Courtney Cara LawsonAll profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise creditedTitle music: 'In Time' by Olexy via Pixabay

This week: A glimpse of the AI frontier in workplace productivity through the eyes of David Shim — serial entrepreneur, Read AI co-founder and CEO, former Foursquare leader, and this year’s GeekWire Awards CEO of the Year. Shim spoke with GeekWire co-founder John Cook at a recent dinner event hosted in partnership with Accenture, in conjunction with our new Agents of Transformation editorial series, exploring AI, productivity, and the future of work. They discuss the rapid rise of workplace AI, why Shim believes today’s boom is fueled by real revenue rather than dot-com-style subsidies, and where he sees both hype and genuine value emerging. Shim offers insights on AI assistants, cross-team “multiplayer AI,” global adoption, and the controversial idea of “digital twins” built from employees’ work data. This episode is the perfect antidote to whatever you're feeling the day after election day… in today's episode, I sit down with two documentary filmmakers, Kahane Cooperman and Innbo Shim, to discuss their film, Creede USA.Creede is a small, remote mining town in Colorado that serves as a microcosm of differing political sides and debates that are happening more broadly in our country today.  The town consists of conservative mining families that have been there for generations, and more liberal, progressive theater people who come into town every summer for the past 60 years for their repertory theater company.  The documentary features many individuals and perspectives that live in this small town of 300, where residents are forced to confront each other's differing views.  The film covers the real-time school board meetings that are tackling some of the pressing political hot button debates and issues facing us today - from topics like guns in schools and gender identity curriculum. This film, and our conversation, explores how people can have vehemently opposing political views, YET still maintain respect for and civility toward one another, and in doing so have created a strong and thriving community in Creede. Creede USA is an amazing independent film… this story and the two amazing female filmmakers behind this story are truly inspirational. This is an episode you won't want to miss!Hosted by Ausha. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

On this week's episode, Maeng Hyo-shim, a young woman who fled North Korea in 2018, joins the podcast to share her experiences of state discrimination, systemic neglect and a violent attack against her disabled mother which led her family to escape the DPRK. Born in Hyesan in 2001, Maeng shares her memories of life growing up under the Kim regime, where people with disabilities were routinely excluded from society and punished for being unable to work in state-run enterprises. She reflects on the hardships her family faced due to her mother's condition, how her parents met and raised her despite overwhelming odds. Maeng Hyo-shim was born in Hyesan, a city on North Korea's northern border with China, in the years after the devastating famine of the 1990s. In 2018, she fled North Korea with her parents after a violent incident against her mother who has a disability and the regime's refusal to deliver justice. She now lives in South Korea and works to raise awareness about human rights issues in North Korea, testifying publicly under her real name — including at the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights in Seoul in June this year. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Jacco Zwetsloot exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists. Whoever puts his trust in me will live, even if he dies;"https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%204%3A12&version=CJBActs 4:12There is salvation in no one else! For there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by whom we must be saved!"Parashah 1: B'resheet (In the beginning)Parashah 13: Sh'mot (Names)Sh'mot 1:1 These are the names of the sons of Isra'el who came into Egypt with Ya'akov; each man came with his household: 2 Re'uven, Shim'on, Levi, Y'hudah, 3 Yissakhar, Z'vulun, Binyamin, 4 Dan, Naftali, Gad and Asher. 5 All told, there were seventy descendants of Ya'akov; Yosef was already in Egypt.Sh'mot 1:6 Yosef died, as did all his brothers and all that generation. 7 The descendants of Isra'el were fruitful, increased abundantly, multiplied and grew very powerful; the land became filled with them.Sh'mot 1:8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt. He knew nothing about Yosef 9 but said to his people, "Look, the descendants of Isra'el have become a people too numerous and powerful for us. 10 Come, let's use wisdom in dealing with them. Otherwise, they'll continue to multiply; and in the event of war they might ally themselves with our enemies, fight against us and leave the land altogether."Sh'mot 1:11 So they put slavemasters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built for Pharaoh the storage cities of Pitom and Ra'amses. 12 But the more the Egyptians oppressed them, the more they multiplied and expanded, until the Egyptians came to dread the people of Isra'el 13 and worked them relentlessly, 14 making their lives bitter with hard labor — digging clay, making bricks, all kinds of field work; and in all this toil they were shown no mercy.Sh'mot 1:15 Moreover, the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was called Shifrah and the other Pu'ah. 16 "When you attend the Hebrew women and see them giving birth," he said, "if it's a boy, kill him; but if it's a girl, let her live." 17 However, the midwives were God-fearing women, so they didn't do as the king of Egypt ordered but let the boys live.A lot like the abortion, earth saving culture that says we are overpopulating this world!Sh'mot 1:18 The king of Egypt summoned the midwives and demanded of them, "Why have you done this and let the boys live?" 19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, "It's because the Hebrew women aren't like the Egyptian women — they go into labor and give birth before the midwife arrives." Sh'mot 1:20 Therefore God prospered the midwives, and the people continued to multiply and grow very powerful. 21 Indeed, because the midwives feared God, he made them founders of families. 22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: "Every boy that is born, throw in the river; but let all the girls live."Credit to:https://www.businessinsider.com/fetus-vision-hearing-development-uterus-2016-9 get shutterstock

Be Quranic

Assalamualaikum,We've reached the final portion of Surah al-Wāqiʿah, and it's been a beautiful journey. Each week, we recited, studied Tajwīd, and reflected practically on what these ayāt mean for our lives.Tajwīd Highlights* Madd Munfasil vs Muttasil:If the wave sign (madd) is in two words, it's munfasil → read 4 harakat. If it's in one word, it's muttasil → read 4 harakat.I keep it simple: when you see the wave, go 4 — unless there's a shaddah or sukun, then it's 6.* Heavy Letters like ص (Ṣād):You lift the back of your tongue, not your lips.Don't shape it like “soo” — it's not lip work, it's tongue elevation.* Light Letter vs. Heavy:Try saying س (Seen) and ص (Ṣād) back-to-back.The makhraj is similar, but ṣād is heavier because of that tongue lift.* Letter ض (Ḍād) – tricky but unique. It's not made with the tip — it's the sides of the tongue touching the molars.Push right or left, or both sides if you can. There's also a bit of stretch — not like dhal, not a heavy “d”, but truly ḍād.* Idghām Without Ghunnah:Example: Fasalāmun laka — tanwīn meets lām → merge it without nasal sound. No humming here.Tafsīr: Ayah 88 to 96Previously, we looked at how Allah divided humanity into three groups on the Day of Judgement:* As-Sābiqūn al-Muqarrabūn – the foremost in goodness, those drawn near to Allah.* Ashābul-Yamīn – the people of the right, honoured and saved.* Ashābush-Shimāl – the people of the left, those who face punishment. We saw the signs in nature: fire, water, creation. The Qur'an kept asking us to reflect. These were not abstract reminders — they were close and real. The question remains: where do we stand? The Qur'an and the StarsEarlier in this passage, Allah took a unique oath:فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِThen I swear by the positions of the stars –وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌAnd indeed, it is a great oath, if you only knew.Allah is linking the stars to the Qur'an. Why?Like the stars, the Qur'an from afar can look like a beautiful mess — dazzling, but hard to make sense of.But if you study the stars, you find direction. They guide travellers at sea and in the desert. Likewise, if you study the Qur'an, it becomes your compass. You begin to see the inner structure, the ring composition, the coherence. We need to dig deeper. The Qur'an is not for the lazy. It calls us to think, reflect, and remember. What Are You Waiting For?Allah ends the Surah by asking us:أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَIs it this statement (Qur'an) that you take lightly? And then reminds us of the moment of death:فَلَوْلَا إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ . تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَThen why, if you are not to be recompensed, do you not return the soul – if you are truthful? This is the challenge. If we truly had power, we could stop death. But we can't.We now reach the final ayat of Surah al-Wāqiʿah, and once again, Allah brings our attention to the three categories of people.1. The MuqarrabūnFor the ones nearest to Allah, they receive:فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّةُ نَعِيمٍThen [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure. These are people who go above the bare minimum. They chase virtue — extra prayers, fasting, charity — and draw close to Allah through constant remembrance and Qur'an.2. Ashābul-Yamīnفَسَلَامٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ“Peace for you” — from the people of the right. They fulfilled their obligations. They weren't perfect, but they remained faithful and upright.3. The Deniers and the Misguidedوَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَBut if he is from those who denied and were astray…They receive the opposite: punishment with scalding water and burning fire.Note how both traits are mentioned: denial and misguidance. It's not just about not knowing — it's rejecting after knowing.According to Imām al-Ghazālī, before a person is truly culpable for disbelief, five conditions must be met:* The message reaches them.* It is explained reasonably.* Doubts are clarified.* Time is given.* They still choose to reject.Yaqīn — The Stages of CertaintyAllah ends the Surah by declaring:إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِThis is the certainty of truth — ḥaqq al-yaqīn.The Qur'an speaks of three levels of yaqīn (certainty):* ʿIlm al-yaqīn — certainty through knowledge (e.g. seeing smoke and knowing there's fire)* ʿAyn al-yaqīn — certainty through seeing (you see the fire itself)* Ḥaqq al-yaqīn — certainty through experience (you touch the fire — and you're burned)We're meant to reach yaqīn through study and reflection, not wait for divine intervention or signs in the sky. That's why Allah constantly invites us to think.Dhikr ChallengeTry to say “ِسُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَ اللهِ الْعَظِيْم (SubḥānAllāh wa bihamdihi SubḥānAllāhi L-Azim)” 100 times in the morning.Make it a daily habit.فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِSo glorify the name of your Lord, the Most GreaA Final Du‘āاللَّهُمَّ ٱجْعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ، وَمِنْ أَصْحَابِ ٱلْيَمِينِ، وَنَجِّنَا مِنَ ٱلضَّالِّينَO Allah, make us from those drawn near, from the people of the right, and protect us from being among the misguided.Next Week: Surah al-ḤujurātNext week, we begin a new series — Surah al-Ḥujurāt. It's a short surah, but packed with guidance on adab, community ethics, and dealing with others.See you then, in shā' Allāh. This is a public episode. "Man's chief end is to glorify G_d, and to enjoy him forever.Genesis 49:1 Then Ya`akov called for his sons and said, "Gather yourselves together, and I will tell you what will happen to you in the acharit-hayamim. 2 Assemble yourselves and listen, sons of Ya`akov; pay attention to Isra'el your father.Genesis 49:3 "Re'uven, you are my firstborn, my strength, the firstfruits of my manhood. 4 Though superior in vigor and power you are unstable as water, so your superiority will end, because you climbed into your father's bed and defiled it — he climbed onto my concubine's couch!Genesis 49:5 "Shim`on and Levi are brothers, related by weapons of violence. 6 Let me not enter their council, let my honor not be connected with their people; for in their anger they killed men, and at their whim they maimed cattle. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it has been fierce; their fury, for it has been cruel. He crouches down and stretches like a lion; like a lioness, who dares to provoke him? 10 The scepter will not pass from Y'hudah, nor the ruler's staff from between his legs, until he comes to whom [obedience] belongs; and it is he whom the peoples will obey. 11 Tying his donkey to the vine, his donkey's colt to the choice grapevine, he washes his clothes in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. 12 His eyes will be darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk.Genesis 49:13 "Z'vulun will live at the seashore, with ships anchoring along his coast and his border at Tzidon.Genesis 49:14 "Yissakhar is a strong donkey lying down in the sheep sheds. 15 On seeing how good is settled life and how pleasant the country,he will bend his back to the burden, and submit to forced labor.Genesis 49:16 "Dan will judge his people as one of the tribes of Isra'el. 17 Dan will be a viper on the road, a horned snake in the paththat bites the horse's heels so its rider falls off backward. 18 I wait for your deliverance, Adonai.Genesis 49:19 "Gad [troop]— a troop will troop on him, but he will troop on their heel. 20 "Asher's food is rich — he will provide food fit for a king. 21 "Naftali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns.Genesis 49:22 "Yosef is a fruitful plant, a fruitful plant by a spring, with branches climbing over the wall. 23 The archers attacked him fiercely, shooting at him and pressing him hard; 24 but his bow remained taut; and his arms were made nimble by the hands of the Mighty One of Ya`akov, from there, from the Shepherd, the Stone of Isra'el, 25 by the G_d of your father, who will help you, by El Shaddai, who will bless you with blessings from heaven above, blessings from the deep, lying below, blessings from the breasts and the womb. 26 The blessings of your father are more powerful than the blessings of my parents, extending to the farthest of the everlasting hills; they will be on the head of Yosef, on the brow of the prince among his brothers. Genesis 49:27 "Binyamin is a ravenous wolf, in the morning devouring the prey, in the evening still dividing the spoil.”Genesis 49:28 All these are the twelve tribes of Isra'el, and this is how their father spoke to them and blessed them, giving each his own individual blessing. 29 Then he charged them as follows: "I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my ancestors in the cave that is in the field of `Efron the Hitti, 30 the cave in the field of Makhpelah, by Mamre, in the land of Kena`an, which Avraham bought together with the field from `Efron the Hitti as a burial-place belonging to him — 31 there they buried Avraham and his wife Sarah, there they buried Yitz'chak and his wife Rivkah, and there I buried Le'ah — 32 the field and the cave in it, which was purchased from the sons of Het.”Genesis 49:33 When Ya`akov had finished charging his sons, he drew his legs up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.Credit to:https://unsplash.com/photos/an-empty-road-in-the-middle-of-a-wooded-area--YV0Zkh2jRMhttps://unsplash.com/photos/a-yellow-road-sign-sitting-on-top-of-a-sandy-beach-__HDU6msgQ4https://unsplash.com/photos/black-flat-screen-computer-monitor-uGqrMOHlkl0https://unsplash.com/photos/white-printer-paper-with-black-text-1UDjq8s8cy0https://unsplash.com/photos/red-theater-curtain-WW1jsInXgwM

It's Monday, July 7, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Christian girl, kidnapped for two years, escapes A Pakistani Christian girl, who this month escaped the Muslim who kidnapped her, said he forcibly converted her to Islam and repeatedly sexually assaulted her as his so-called “wife,” reports Morning Star News. On the night of May 24, 2023, as her family slept, 14-year-old Muskan Liaqat was kidnapped at gunpoint from her home in Sheikhupura District, by Muhammad Adnan and his father Muhammad Arif. Muskan said, “They took me to their home, where they tortured me and forcibly took my thumb impressions on some papers. I was later told that I had become a Muslim and Adnan was my husband.” A member of the Salvation Army church, Muskan said she was treated as a sex slave. She said, “I was raped and beaten by Adnan … on almost a daily basis. As a result of repeated sexual abuse, I got pregnant in 2024.” Severe torture by Adnan resulted in a miscarriage in the fourth month of her pregnancy. She said, “I used to cry all night and prayed to God to rescue me from this hell, but it looked like my prayers were not reaching Him.” The trauma led her to attempt suicide by cutting her wrist. Judges routinely ignore evidence related to the children's ages, handing them back to kidnappers as their “legal wives.” Thankfully, she got away and is now in a safe house. According to Open Doors, Pakistan, which is 96% Muslim, is the eighth most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. South Korean doctor charged with murder after full-term abortion On July 2nd, a South Korean doctor was arrested and charged with murder following the abortion of a full-term baby last year, reigniting national debate over the country's ambiguous abortion laws and medical ethics, reports LifeSiteNews.com. On June 28, Judge Park Jeong-ho of the Seoul Central District Court approved arrest warrants for the surgeon, identified as Shim, and the facility's director, “Yoon.” Authorities allege the child was born alive and then deliberately left to die, which they say amounts to murder through “willful neglect.” The case dates back to late 2024. Evidence suggests that the baby was alive both before and after the procedure. The abortion was allegedly committed via labor induction – a method that, if resulting in a live birth followed by intentional death, could meet the legal definition of murder under Korean law. The Korean Medical Association condemned the incident, stating: “A fetus at 36 weeks is a baby who could survive well if born, and terminating a pregnancy at this stage is tantamount to murder.” Psalm 139:13-14 says, “For You [God] created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Trump's Big Beautiful Bill defunded Planned Parenthood Trump's “Big Beautiful Bill,” which he signed into law on Friday, July 4th, defunded Planned Parenthood for a year, reports LifeNews.com. The defunding provision, outlined in Section 44126 of the bill, effectively terminates Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood for non-abortion services, closing a loophole that has allowed the organization to access federal funds despite the Hyde Amendment's ban on direct taxpayer funding for abortions. Pro-life critics have argued that those Medicaid reimbursements indirectly paid for the abortion giant to kill more babies by abortion. It is the first time that the radical Planned Parenthood abortion business has been defunded. The vote, as we reported on Friday, was 218-214. The new law will redirect hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to community-based, pro-life healthcare providers and away from Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion. Planned Parenthood, which kills over 400,000 babies in abortions annually, received $700 million in taxpayer funds last fiscal year. Death toll in Texas flash floods climbs to 79, 40 remain missing At least 70 people are dead in central Texas after devastating flash floods slammed the Texas Hill Country, with water rescues taking place along the Guadalupe River, which rose rapidly early Friday morning to the height of a two-story building, reports CBS News. (Watch this video to see the rushing water in Center Point, Texas which tears down trees and threatens a bridge.) A dozen are still missing from Camp Mystic in Kerr County, a children's Christian summer camp. 13-year-old Stella Thompson, a camper who survived, talked with the Dallas NBC affiliate. THOMPSON: “You'd see kayaks in trees. It was horrific, because we had no idea. First responders in the water. There were huge trees ripped out of the ground.” Tragically, in a last act of kindness, Richard Eastland, the director of Camp Mystic, died trying to save campers as floodwaters from the Guadalupe River overwhelmed the camp, which is on the banks of the river, reports the San Antonio Express-News. More than 750 girls were at the camp when the flooding struck. The dead include 38 adults and 21 children, with 18 of the adults and four of the children unidentified.  Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott spoke from the heart. ABBOTT: “When Texans face a challenge, we come together, we unite. We will be relentless in going after and ensuring that we locate every single person who's been a victim of this flooding event. We're not going to stop today or tomorrow. We will stop when the job is completed. This is a 24/7 operation, day and night. We will find every one of them.” Dear Lord, Help the First Responders rescue all of the remaining survivors of this horrific flood. Amen. You can help with a tax-deductible donation to Samaritan's Purse through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. 22-year-old woman survives, carried 20 miles downstream One bright spot. A 22-year-old woman, who was carried by the raging waters 20 miles from Hunt, Texas to Center Point, survived as she clung to a tree. Carl, who lives along the Guadalupe River, explained what happened to KENS-TV 5. CARL: “True miracle. There's no other way to explain it. “I came up on the deck and she saw me. So, she started to scream out loud. I thought she was in the water going down the river. I finally looked and was able to spot her in the tree. I began to holler back to her. ‘Hey, I see you. We'll get you help. Hang on. Hang on.' Because she was desperate! “After they were able to pluck her out, we brought her into our house and gave her a shower, clothed her because it had stripped all of her clothing off, gave her something to drink, gave her a nap. We called her grandmother in Corpus.” Thankfully, she had no broken bones and only a small wound on the top of her head. Worldview listeners in Colorado and California speak out And finally, two Worldview listeners wrote me at Adam@TheWorldview.com to share what they enjoy about the newscast. Wes Anderson in Grand Junction, Colorado, wrote, “I try to read The Worldview in 5 Minutes transcript every day. I appreciate the Biblical perspective on the news! It's nice to have a news source I can trust!” And Pastor Aaron Hebbard of Remnant Church in Mentone, California, wrote, “Here's what I like: I love the snapshot of the big issues of the day without having to spend precious time chasing various stories.  I treasure the news on the persecuted church; it prompts prayer on behalf of our global brothers and sisters, and sets the stage for the unfathomable things Christ will do with the precious blood of His saints.  I appreciate the occasional call to activism, whether it's a phone call or email to a local politician, or support for a cause, or to join a prayer movement.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, July 7th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. The desire of all our soul is to remember you and your name.Genesis 48:1 Awhile later someone told Yosef that his father was ill. He took with him his two sons, M'nasheh and Efrayim. 2 Ya`akov was told, "Here comes your son Yosef." Isra'el gathered his strength and sat up in bed. 3 Ya`akov said to Yosef, "El Shaddai appeared to me at Luz in the land of Kena`an and blessed me, 4 saying to me, `I will make you fruitful and numerous. I will make of you a group of peoples; and I will give this land to your descendants to possess forever.' 5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Efrayim and M'nasheh will be as much mine as Re'uven and Shim`on are. 6 The children born to you after them will be yours, but for purposes of inheritance they are to be counted with their older brothers.Genesis 48:7 "Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died suddenly, as we were traveling through the land of Kena`an, while we were still some distance from Efrat; so I buried her there on the way to Efrat (also known as Beit-Lechem)."Genesis 48:8 Then Isra'el noticed Yosef's sons and asked, "Whose are these?" 9 Yosef answered his father, "They are my sons, whom G_d has given me here." Ya`akov replied, "I want you to bring them here to me, so that I can bless them." (ii) 10 Now Isra'el's eyes were dim with age, so that he could not see. Yosef brought his sons near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 Isra'el said to Yosef, "I never expected to see even you again, but G_d has allowed me to see your children too!" 12 Yosef brought them out from between his legs and prostrated himself on the ground. 13 Then Yosef took them both, Efrayim in his right hand toward Isra'el's left hand and M'nasheh in his left hand toward Isra'el's right hand, and brought them near to him. 14 But Isra'el put out his right hand and laid it on the head of the younger one, Efrayim, and put his left hand on the head of M'nasheh — he intentionally crossed his hands, even though M'nasheh was the firstborn. 15 Then he blessed Yosef: "The G_d in whose presence my fathers Avraham and Yitz'chak lived, the G_d who has been my own shepherd all my life long to this day, 16 the angel who has rescued me from all harm, bless these boys. May they remember who I am and what I stand for, and likewise my fathers Avraham and Yitz'chak, who they were and what they stood for. And may they grow into teeming multitudes on the earth."Genesis 48:17 When Yosef saw that his father was laying his right hand on Efrayim's head, it displeased him, and he lifted up his father's hand to remove it from Efrayim's head and place it instead on M'nasheh's head. 18 Yosef said to his father, "Don't do it that way, my father; for this one is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head." 19 But his father refused and said, "I know that, my son, I know it. He too will become a people, and he too will be great; nevertheless his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will grow into many nations." 20 Then he added this blessing on them that day: "Isra'el will speak of you in their own blessings by saying, `May G_d make you like Efrayim and M'nasheh.'" Thus he put Efrayim ahead of M'nasheh.Genesis 48:21 Isra'el then said to Yosef, "You see that I am dying, but G_d will be with you and will bring you back to the land of your ancestors. 22 Moreover, I am giving to you a sh'khem [shoulder, ridge, share, city of Sh'khem] more than to your brothers; I captured it from the Emori with my sword and bow."

He arrived at Be'er-Sheva and offered sacrifices to the G_d of his father Yitz'chak. 2 In a vision at night G_d called to Isra'el, "Ya`akov! Ya`akov!" He answered, "Here I am." 3 He said, "I am G_d, the G_d of your father. Don't be afraid to go down to Egypt. It is there that I will make you into a great nation. 4 Not only will I go down with you to Egypt; but I will also bring you back here again, after Yosef has closed your eyes."Genesis 46:5 So Ya`akov left Be'er-Sheva; the sons of Isra'el brought Ya`akov their father, their little ones and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry them. 6 They took their cattle and their possessions which they had acquired in the land of Kena`an and arrived in Egypt, Ya`akov and all his descendants with him — 7 his sons, grandsons, daughters, granddaughters and all his descendants he brought with him into Egypt.Genesis 46:8 These are the names of Isra'el's children who came into Egypt, Ya`akov and his sons: Re'uven Ya`akov's firstborn; 9 and the sons of Re'uven — Hanokh, Pallu, Hetzron and Karmi. 10 The sons of Shim`on: Y'mu'el, Yamin, Ohad, Yakhin, Tzochar and Sha'ul the son of a Kena`ani woman. 11 The sons of Levi: Gershon, K'hat and M'rari.Genesis 46:12 The sons of Y'hudah: `Er, Onan, Shelah, Peretz and Zerach; but `Er and Onan died in the land of Kena`an. The sons of Peretz were Hetzron and Hamul. 13 The sons of Yissakhar: Tola, Puvah, Yov and Shimron. 14 The sons of Z'vulun: Sered, Elon and Yachle'el. 15 These were the children of Le'ah whom she bore to Ya`akov in Paddan-Aram, with his daughter Dinah. In sum, his sons and daughters numbered thirty-three. Genesis 46:16 The sons of Gad: Tzifyon, Haggi, Shuni, Etzbon, `Eri, Arodi and Ar'eli. 17 The children of Asher: Yimnah, Yishvah, Yishvi, B'ri`ah, and their sister Serach. The sons of B'ri`ah were Hever and Malki'el. 18 These were the children of Zilpah, whom Lavan gave to Le'ah his daughter; she bore them to Ya`akov — sixteen people. Genesis 46:19 The sons of Rachel Ya`akov's wife: Yosef and Binyamin. 20 To Yosef in the land of Egypt were born M'nasheh and Efrayim, whom Osnat the daughter of Poti-Fera priest of On bore to him. 21 The sons of Binyamin: Bela, Bekher, Ashbel, Gera, Na`aman, Echi, Rosh, Mupim, Hupim and Ard. 22 These were the children of Rachel who were born to Ya`akov — in sum, fourteen people.Genesis 46:23 The sons of Dan: Hushim. 24 The sons of Naftali: Yachtze'el, Guni, Yetzer and Shillem. 25 These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Lavan gave to Rachel his daughter; she bore them to Ya`akov — in sum, seven people.Genesis 46:26 All the people belonging to Ya`akov coming into Egypt, his direct descendants (not counting Ya`akov's sons' wives), totaled sixty-six. 27 The sons of Yosef, born to him in Egypt, were two in number. Thus all the people in Ya`akov's family who entered Egypt numbered seventy.Genesis 46:28 Ya`akov sent Y'hudah ahead of him to Yosef, so that the latter might guide him on the road to Goshen; thus they arrived in the land of Goshen. 29 Yosef prepared his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet Isra'el his father. He presented himself to him, embraced him and wept on his neck for a long time. 30 Then Isra'el said to Yosef, "Now I can die, because I have seen your face and seen that you are still alive."Genesis 46:31 Yosef said to his brothers and his father's family, "I'm going up to tell Pharaoh. I'll say to him, `My brothers and my father's family, who were in the land of Kena`an, have come to me. 32 The men are shepherds and keepers of livestock; they have brought their flocks, their herds and all their possessions.' 33 Now when Pharaoh summons you and asks, `What is your occupation?' 34 tell him, `Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth until now, both we and our ancestors.' This will ensure that you will live in the land of Goshen — for any shepherd is abhorrent to the Egyptians."Credit to:https://unsplash.com/photos/pathway-between-trees-74TufExdP3Yhttps://unsplash.com/photos/black-and-white-arrow-sign-Vckq-heaypghttps://unsplash.com/photos/gray-wall-paint-taO2fC7sxDU

I give you strength, I give you help, I support you with my victorious right hand.Genesis 43:1 But the famine was severe in the land; 2 so when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, "Go again, buy us a little food." 3 Y'hudah said to him, "The man expressly warned us, `You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.' 4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food; 5 but if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, `You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'" Genesis 43:6 Isra'el said, "Why did you bring such trouble my way by telling the man you had another brother?" 7 They answered, "The man kept questioning us about ourselves and about our kinsmen. He asked, `Is your father still alive?' `Do you have another brother?' and we answered according to the literal meaning of his questions. How were we to know he would say, `Bring your brother down'?"Genesis 43:8 Y'hudah said to Isra'el his father, "Send the boy with me; and we will make preparations and leave; so that we may stay alive and not die, both we and you, and also our little ones. 9 I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me responsible. If I fail to bring him to you and present him to your face, let me bear the blame forever. 10 Except for our lengthy delay, we would have been there again by now."Genesis 43:11 Their father Isra'el answered them, "If that's how it is, do this: take in your containers some of the land's best products, and bring the man a gift — some healing resin, a little honey, aromatic gum, opium, pistachio nuts and almonds. 12 Take twice the amount of money with you; and return the money that came back with you in your packs — it could have been an oversight. 13 Yes, and take your brother too; and get ready; and go again to the man. Genesis 43:14 May El Shaddai give you favor in the man's sight, so that he will release to you your other brother as well as Binyamin. As for me, if I must lose my children, lose them I will." 15 The men took that gift, and they took twice the money with them, and Binyamin; then they prepared, went down to Egypt and stood before Yosef.Genesis 43:16 When Yosef saw Binyamin with them, he said to his household manager, "Take the men inside the house, kill the animals and prepare the meat. These men will dine with me at noon." 17 The man did as Yosef ordered and brought the men into Yosef's house.Genesis 43:18 Upon being ushered inside Yosef's house, the men became fearful. They said, "It's because of the money that was returned in our packs the first time that we have been brought inside — so that he can use it as an excuse to attack us, take us as slaves and seize our donkeys too." 19 So they approached the manager of Yosef's household and spoke to him at the entrance of the house: 20 "Please, my lord, the first time we indeed came down to buy food; 21 but when we got to camp, we opened our packs, and there inside our packs was each man's money, the full amount. We have brought it back with us; 22 moreover, we have brought down other money to buy food. We have no idea who put our money in our packs." 23 "Stop worrying," he replied, "don't be afraid. Your G_d and the G_d of your father put treasure in your packs. As for your money — I was the one who received it." Then he brought Shim`on out to them.Genesis 43:24 The man brought the men into Yosef's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet, and he provided fodder for their donkeys. 25 Then they got their gift ready for Yosef's arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were going to eat a meal there. 26 When Yosef arrived home, they went in the house and presented him with the gift they had brought with them, then prostrated themselves before him on the ground.Genesis 43:27 He asked them how they were and inquired, "Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?" 28 They answered, "Your servant our father is well; yes, he is still alive," as they bowed in respect. 29 He looked up and saw Binyamin his brother, his mother's son, and said, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?" and added, "May G_d be good to you, my son."Genesis 43:30 Then Yosef hurried out, because his feelings toward his brother were so strong that he wanted to cry; he went into his bedroom and there he wept. 31 Then he washed his face and came out, but he controlled himself as he gave the order to serve the meal. Genesis 43:32 They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians included at the meal by themselves — Egyptians don't eat with Hebrews, because that is abhorrent to them. 33 So they sat there facing him, the firstborn in the place of honor, the youngest in last place; and the men expressed their amazement to each other. 34 Each was given his serving there in front of him, but Binyamin's portion was five times as large as any of theirs. So they drank and enjoyed themselves with him.Credit to:https://unsplash.com/photos/brown-wooden-pagoda-temple-under-white-sky-during-daytime-ziRSVNNqzbYhttps://unsplash.com/photos/a-dark-cloudy-sky-over-a-mountain-range-iIK7FAyiavE

Ya`akov did not send him with his brothers, because he was afraid something might happen to him.Genesis 42:5 The sons of Isra'el came to buy along with the others that came, since the famine extended to the land of Kena`an. 6 Yosef was governor over the land; it was he who sold to all the people of the land. Now when Yosef's brothers came and prostrated themselves before him on the ground, 7 Yosef saw his brothers and recognized them; but he acted toward them as if he were a stranger and spoke harshly with them. He asked them, "Where are you from?" They answered, "From the land of Kena`an to buy food." 8 So Yosef recognized his brothers, but they didn't recognize him.Genesis 42:9 Remembering the dreams he had had about them, Yosef said to them, "You are spies! You've come to spot our country's weaknesses!" 10 "No, my lord," they replied, "your servants have come to buy food. 11 We're all the sons of one man, we're upright men; your servants aren't spies." 12 "No," he said to them, "you've come to spy out our country's weaknesses." 13 They said, "We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Kena`an; the youngest stayed with our father, and another one is gone." Genesis 42:14 "Just as I said," replied Yosef, "you're spies! 15 Here's how you can prove you're not lying: as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave here unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother. Meanwhile, you will be kept in custody. This will prove whether there is any truth in what you say. Otherwise, as Pharaoh lives, you are certainly spies." 17 Then he put all of them together in prison for three days.Genesis 42:18 On the third day, Yosef said to them, "Do what I say, and stay alive, for I fear G_d. 19 If you are upright men, let one of your brothers remain incarcerated in the prison you're being kept in, while you go and carry grain back to relieve the famine in your homes. 20 But bring your youngest brother to me. In this way your statements will be verified, and you won't die." So they did it. 21 They said to each other, "We are in fact guilty concerning our brother. He was in distress and pleaded with us; we saw it and wouldn't listen. That's why this distress has come upon us now." Genesis 42:22 Re'uven answered them, "Didn't I tell you, `Don't wrong the boy'? But you wouldn't hear of it. Now comes the reckoning for his blood!" 23 They had no idea that Yosef understood them, since an interpreter was translating for them. 24 Yosef turned away from them and wept; then he returned and spoke to them. He took Shim`on from among them and put him in prison before their eyes. 25 Next he ordered that their containers be filled with grain, that every man's money be put back in his pack and that they be given provisions for the journey. When these things had been done for them, 26 they loaded their grain on their donkeys and departed.Genesis 42:27 But at camp that night, as one of them opened his pack to give fodder to his donkey, he noticed his money — there it was, just inside his pack. 28 He said to his brothers, "My money has been restored — there it is, right in my pack!" At that, their hearts sank; they turned, trembling, to one another and said, "What is this that G_d has done to us?"Genesis 42:29 They returned to Ya`akov their father in the land of Kena`an and told him all that had happened to them. 30 "The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly with us. He took us for spies in his country. 31 We said to him, `We are upright men, we're not spies; 32 we are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is gone, and the youngest stayed with our father in the land of Kena`an.' 33 But the man, the lord of the land, said to us, `Here is how I will know that you are upright men: leave one of your brothers with me, take grain to relieve the famine in your homes, and go on your way; 34 but bring your youngest brother to me. By this I will know that you aren't spies, but are upright men; then I will return your brother to you; and you will do business in the land.'"Genesis 42:35 Next, as they emptied their packs, there was each man's bag of money in his pack; and when they and their father saw their bags of money, they became afraid. 36 Ya`akov their father said to them, "You have robbed me of my children! Yosef is gone, Shim`on is gone, now you're taking Binyamin away — it all falls on me!" 37 Re'uven said to his father, "If I don't bring him back to you, you can kill my own two sons! Put him in my care; I will return him to you." 38 But he replied, "My son will not go down with you. His brother is dead, and he alone is left. If anything were to happen to him while traveling with you, you would bring my gray hair down to Sh'ol with grief."Credit to:Photo by MART  PRODUCTION from Pexels: https://www.pexels.com/photo/depressed-homeless-man-8078474/Photo by Thais Cordeiro from Pexels: https://www.pexels.com/photo/egyptian-pyramids-during-sunset-3873681/

Adonai your G_d has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his own unique treasure.Genesis 35:1 G_d said to Ya`akov, "Get up, go up to Beit-El and live there, and make there an altar to G_d, who appeared to you when you fled `Esav your brother." 2 Then Ya`akov said to his household and all the others with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods that you have with you, purify yourselves, and put on fresh clothes. 3 We're going to move on and go up to Beit-El. There I will build an altar to G_d, who answered me when I was in such distress and stayed with me wherever I went." Genesis 35:4 They gave Ya`akov all the foreign gods in their possession and the earrings they were wearing, and Ya`akov buried them under the pistachio tree near Sh'khem. 5 While they were traveling, a terror from G_d fell upon the cities around them, so that none of them pursued the sons of Ya`akov.Genesis 35:6 Ya`akov and all the people with him arrived at Luz (that is, Beit-El) in the land of Kena`an. 7 He built there an altar and called the place El-Beit-El [G_d of Beit-El], because it was there that G_d was revealed to him, at the time when he was fleeing from his brother.Genesis 35:8 Then D'vorah, Rivkah's nurse, died. She was buried below Beit-El under the oak, which was given the name Alon-Bakhut [oak of weeping].Genesis 35:9 After Ya`akov arrived from Paddan-Aram, G_d appeared to him again and blessed him. 10 G_d said to him, "Your name is Ya`akov, but you will be called Ya`akov no longer; your name will be Isra'el." Thus he named him Isra'el. 11 G_d further said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed a group of nations, will come from you; kings will be descended from you. Genesis 35:12 Moreover, the land which I gave to Avraham and Yitz'chak I will give to you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you." 13 Then G_d went up from him there where he had spoken with him. Genesis 35:14 Ya`akov set up a standing-stone in the place where he had spoken with him, a stone pillar. Then he poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. 15 Ya`akov called the place where G_d spoke with him Beit-El.Genesis 35:16 Then they traveled on from Beit-El, and while there was still some distance to go before arriving in Efrat, Rachel went into labor, and she had great difficulty with it. 17 While she was undergoing this hard labor, the midwife said to her, "Don't worry, this is also a son for you." 18 But she died in childbirth. As she was dying she named her son Ben-Oni [son of my grief], but his father called him Binyamin [son of the right hand, son of the south]. 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Efrat (that is, Beit-Lechem). 20 Ya`akov set up a standing-stone on her grave; it is the standing-stone of Rachel's grave to this day.Genesis 35:21 Isra'el continued his travels and pitched his tent on the other side of Migdal-`Eder. 22 It was while Isra'el was living in that land that Re'uven went and slept with Bilhah his father's concubine, and Isra'el heard about it. Ya`akov had twelve sons. 23 The sons of Le'ah were Re'uven Ya`akov's firstborn, Shim`on, Levi, Y'hudah, Yissakhar and Z'vulun. 24 The sons of Rachel were Yosef and Binyamin. 25 The sons of Bilhah Rachel's slave-girl were Dan and Naftali. 26 And the sons of Zilpah Le'ah's slave-girl were Gad and Asher. These were Ya`akov's sons, born to him in Paddan-Aram.Genesis 35:27 Ya`akov came home to his father Yitz'chak at Mamre, near Kiryat-Arba (also known as Hevron), where Avraham and Yitz'chak had lived as foreigners. 28 Yitz'chak lived to be 180 years old. 29 Then he breathed his last, died and was gathered to his people, an old man full of years; and his sons `Esav and Ya`akov buried him.DOGE and DOSE?Department of Spiritual Efficacy!https://unsplash.com/@stigson - Jordan Valleyhttps://unsplash.com/@robertina - Anointing oilhttps://unsplash.com/@fadid000 - Heart

You shall not rape - Stop Stealing InnocenceWebsite: http://www.battle4freedom.com/Network: https://www.mojo50.comStreaming: https://www.rumble.com/Battle4FreedomPsalm 106:39Thus they were defiled by their deeds; they prostituted themselves by their actions,Genesis 34:1 One time Dinah the daughter of Le'ah, whom she had borne to Ya`akov, went out to visit the local girls; 2 and Sh'khem the son of Hamor the Hivi, the local ruler, saw her, grabbed her, raped her and humiliated her. 3 But actually he was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Ya`akov; he fell in love with the girl and tried to win her affection. 4 Sh'khem spoke with his father Hamor and said, "Get this girl for me; I want her to be my wife."Genesis 34:5 When Ya`akov heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Ya`akov restrained himself until they came. 6 Hamor the father of Sh'khem went out to Ya`akov to speak with him 7 just as Ya`akov's sons were coming in from the field. When they heard what had happened, the men were saddened and were very angry at the outrage this man had committed against Isra'el by raping Ya`akov's daughter, something that is simply not done. 8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Sh'khem's heart is set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife; 9 and intermarry with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 You will live with us, and the land will be available to you — you'll live, do business and acquire possessions here."Genesis 34:11 Then Sh'khem said to her father and brothers, "Only accept me, and I will give whatever you tell me. 12 Ask as large a bride-price as you like, I'll pay whatever you tell me. Just let me marry the girl." 13 The sons of Ya`akov answered Sh'khem and Hamor his father deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. 14 They said to them, "We can't do it, because it would be a disgrace to give our sister to someone who hasn't been circumcised. 15 Only on this condition will we consent to what you are asking: that you become like us by having every male among you get circumcised. 16 Then we'll give our daughters to you, and we'll take your daughters for ourselves, and we'll live with you and become one people. 17 But if you won't do as we say and get circumcised, then we'll take our daughter and go away." 18 What they said seemed fair to Hamor and Sh'khem the son of Hamor, 19 and the young man did not put off doing what was asked of him, even though he was the most respected member of his father's family, because he so much wanted Ya`akov's daughter.Genesis 34:20 Hamor and Sh'khem his son came to the entrance of their city and spoke with its leading men: 21 "These people are peaceful toward us; therefore let them live in the land and do business in it; for, as you can see, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters as wives for ourselves, and we'll give them our daughters. 22 But the people will consent to live with us and become one people only on this condition: that every male among us gets circumcised, as they themselves are circumcised. 23 Won't their cattle, their possessions and all their animals be ours? Only let's consent to do what they ask, and then they will live with us." 24 Everyone going out the city's gate listened to Hamor and Sh'khem his son; so every male was circumcised, every one that went out the gate of the city.Genesis 34:25 On the third day after the circumcision, when they were in pain, two of Ya`akov's sons, Shim`on and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords, boldly descended on the city and slaughtered all the males. 26 They killed Hamor and Sh'khem his son with their swords, took Dinah out of Sh'khem's house, and left. 27 Then the sons of Ya`akov entered over the dead bodies of those who had been slaughtered and plundered the city in reprisal for defiling their sister. 28 They took their flocks, cattle and donkeys, and everything else, whether in the city or in the field, 29 everything they owned. Their children and wives they took captive, and they looted whatever was in the houses.Genesis 34:30 But Ya`akov said to Shim`on and Levi, "You have caused me trouble by making me stink in the opinion of the local inhabitants, the Kena`ani and the P'rizi. Since I don't have many people, they'll align themselves together against me and attack me; and I will be destroyed, I and my household." 31 They replied, "Should we let our sister be treated like a whore?"https://www.instagram.com/reel/DF6fqlPPc8j/https://www.instagram.com/reel/DF8bykgybYM/?igsh=MTY1YzQ5aGdpZGZldA==Thugging, Mugging, and Drugging are more voluntary than they are culturally!Credits:Photo by ClickerHappy: https://www.pexels.com/photo/girl-in-white-long-sleeve-shirt-and-black-skirt-sitting-on-swing-during-day-time-12165/Photo by Adonyi Gábor: https://www.pexels.com/photo/a-brown-concrete-wall-1770619/Photo by Towfiqu barbhuiya: https://www.pexels.com/photo/a-close-up-shot-of-a-roll-of-money-and-various-drugs-9941494/

The stone on the well's mouth was large, 3 and only when all the flocks had gathered there would they roll the stone away from the opening of the well and water the sheep. Then they would put the stone back in its place on the well's opening.Genesis 29:4 Ya`akov said to them, "My brothers, where are you from?" They answered, "We're from Haran." 5 He asked them, "Do you know Lavan the [grand]son of Nachor?" They said, "We do." 6 He asked them, "Are things going well with him?" "Yes," they answered, "and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep." Genesis 29:7 He said, "Look, there's still plenty of daylight left; and it isn't time to bring the animals home; so water the sheep; then go, and put them out to pasture." 8 They answered, "We can't, not until all the flocks have been gathered together, and they roll the stone away from the opening of the well. That's when we water the sheep."Genesis 29:9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, because she took care of them. 10 When Ya`akov saw Rachel the daughter of Lavan his mother's brother, and the sheep of Lavan his mother's brother, Ya`akov went up and rolled the stone away from the opening of the well and watered the flock of Lavan his mother's brother. Genesis 29:11 Ya`akov kissed Rachel and wept aloud. 12 Ya`akov told Rachel that he was her father's relative, and that he was Rivkah's son; and she ran and told her father. 13 When Lavan heard the news of Ya`akov his sister's son, he ran to meet him, hugged him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Ya`akov told Lavan all that had happened. Genesis 29:14 Lavan said to him, "You are indeed my own flesh and blood." After Ya`akov had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Lavan said to him, "Why should you work for me for nothing, just because you are my relative? Tell me how much I should pay you." 16 Now Lavan had two daughters; the name of the older was Le'ah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Le'ah's eyes were weak; but Rachel was good-looking, with beautiful features.Genesis 29:18 Ya`akov had fallen in love with Rachel and said, "I will work for you seven years in exchange for Rachel your younger daughter." 19 Lavan answered, "Better that I give her to you than to someone else; stay with me." 20 So Ya`akov worked seven years for Rachel, and it seemed only a few days to him, because he was so much in love with her.Genesis 29:21 Ya`akov said to Lavan, "Give me my wife, since my time is finished, so that I can start living with her." 22 Lavan gathered all the men of the place and gave a banquet. 23 In the evening he took Le'ah his daughter and brought her to Ya`akov, and he went in and slept with her. 24 Lavan also gave his slave-girl Zilpah to his daughter Le'ah as her slave-girl.Genesis 29:25 In the morning Ya`akov saw that he was with Le'ah, and he said to Lavan, "What kind of thing is this that you've done to me? Didn't I work for you for Rachel? Why have you deceived me?" 26 Lavan answered, "In our place that isn't how it's done, to give the younger daughter before the firstborn. 27 Finish the marriage week of this one, and we'll give you the other one also in exchange for the work you will do for me during yet another seven years." Genesis 29:28 Ya`akov agreed to this, so he finished her week, and Lavan gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife. 29 Lavan also gave to his daughter Rachel his slave-girl Bilhah as her slave-girl. 30 So not only did Ya`akov go in and sleep with Rachel, but he also loved Rachel more than Le'ah. Then he served Lavan another seven years.Genesis 29:31 Adonai saw that Le'ah was unloved, so he made her fertile, while Rachel remained childless. 32 Le'ah conceived and gave birth to a son, whom she named Re'uven [see, a son!], for she said, "It is because Adonai has seen how humiliated I have been, but now my husband will love me." Genesis 29:33 She conceived again, gave birth to a son and said, "It is because Adonai has heard that I am unloved; therefore he has given me this son also." So she named him Shim`on [hearing].Genesis 29:34 Once more she conceived and had a son; and she said, "Now this time my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons." Therefore she named him Levi [joining].Genesis 29:35 She conceived yet again, had a son and said, "This time I will praise Adonai"; therefore she named him Y'hudah [praise]. Then she stopped having children.

If one sells a field of a particular size, if there are parts with cracks or rocks, they are included in the measurement of the field if they are less than ten handbreadths in depth/height. But if they are ten handbreadths in depth/height, they are not considered part of the field and more land must be given to the buyer to complete the measurement. A Mishna from Arakhin explains that if one consecrates a field from an ancestral field with cracks and rocks, they are included in the amount given to the Temple only if the cracks/rocks are less than ten handbreadths in depth/height. After asking why the cracks that are more than ten handbreadths deep aren't consecrated as an independent unit worthy of planting, the Gemara explains that the Mishna is referring only to cracks that are filled with water as they are not able to be used for planting. However, our Mishna can be referring to any kind of cracks, as cracks that are ten handbreadths deep are a hindrance for a buyer as they makes it difficult for the owner to plow. The Mishna discussed the height of the rocks but not the area of space they take up. Rabbi Yitzchak explains that if they take up a space in which four kav of seeds can be planted, they are not part of the measurement of the field even if they are less than ten handbreaths in height. However, there is a debate about whether these rocks (of four kav in size) are spread in a part of the field where five kav can be planted or even if they are not spread in the majority of the field. A series of questions are asked about what the law would be if they are spread not in the majority, but most of the four kav are in the majority or they are in a circle, or a row, or a zigzag, etc. These questions remain unanswered. If they are on the border, they are also not included, even if they are not ten in height. The Mishna delineates the margin of error in the measurement of a piece of land sold, which depends on the language used at the time of the sale. If the seller said "beit kor as measured by a rope, any extra amount given to the buyer needs to be returned to the seller. But if the seller said "give or take" the margin of error is a quarter kav per se'ah (1/24). The Gemara asks: What would be the law if the seller simply said, "a beit kor"?

Growing up, Haein Shim was taught that if she wanted to succeed, she needed to change her appearance. Shim was raised in South Korea, where a competitive job market and booming beauty industry combined to make careful beauty maintenance all but mandatory for gainful employment. By the time she was a young adult, she was spending hours a day and hundreds of dollars a month on makeup and clothes, until one day her friend asked, “Why do we spend so much money on our appearance?” That question upended Shim’s family, career and sense of self. It led her to join a movement called Escape the Corset, calling for an end to strict beauty standards. In this episode, we also speak to NPR's Elise Hu, who spent years reporting on the rise of the K-beauty and how it has impacted Korea's economy and gender politics. Her book on the subject, “Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture From the K-Beauty Capital,” examines how women like Haein Shim are changing the face of beauty in Korea.
