John Vickers, Founder & CEO of Blue Abyss.John is building one of the most ambitious and inspiring projects I've come across in my time exploring what people are building in Cleveland! After spending eight years in the British Army, John completed his service at the rank of Corporal in 1991 and transitioned to a civilian career where he worked in management consulting, and leadership roles across IBM and GE Capital. In 2004, grounded in his desire to prepare for an imagined future of proliferated human spaceflight and extreme environment exploration, he founded Blue Abyss to deliver the World's foremost extreme environment research, development, testing and training facilities — unlocking our ability to ask and seek to answer some of the most important questions in the exploration of space, aerospace, medical, marine, and other robotic technologies.Adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Aiport, and close to NASA Glenn's headquarters, Blue Abyss is developing the world's largest and deepest R&D Pool, measuring 40 meters by 50 meters on the surface with a 16m wide shaft plunging to a depth of 50 meters with a volume capacity of 42,000 cubic meters of water. The Facility will also house ancillary extreme environment capabilities forHuman Centrifuges to enable training and physiology research at high Gs.Hypobaric and Hyperbaric Chambers to enabling training and research in pressurized environments.and Parabolic Flight to enable microgravity research, training, and public discovery.Furthermore, in addition to servicing a gamut of industries from offshore energy to the growing human spaceflight sector, John is deeply committed to education and inspiring young people to explore and learn about the world around them. This conversation feels right out of science fiction, but it's on track to become science reality. We discuss the balance of ambition and humility, the formative experience of his international upbringing, the influence of his military background and mentors like astronauts and his brother-in-law Sergeant Ian McKay, his appreciation of Cleveland, leadership, persistence, and ultimately the impact he hopes to have with Blue Abyss.-----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnvickers1https://blueabyss.uk/blog/post/blue-abyss-ohio-land-purchase-completehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbgJ01B89So&ab_channel=BlueAbyss-----SPONSORS: John Carroll University Boler College of Business || Impact Architects & NinetyJohn Carroll University Boler College of Business: https://business.jcu.edu/ As we've heard time and time again from entrepreneurs on Lay of The Land — many of whom are proud alumni of John Carroll University — success in this ever-changing world of business requires a dynamic and innovative mindset, deep understanding of emerging technology and systems, strong ethics, leadership prowess, acute business acumen… all qualities nurtured through the Boler College of Business! With 4 different MBA programs of study — spanning Professional, Online, Hybrid, and 1-Year-Flexible — The Boler College of Business provides flexible timelines and various class structures for each MBA Track — including online, in-person, hybrid and asynchronous — to offer the most effective options for you, in addition to the ability to participate in an elective International Study Tour, providing unparalleled opportunities to expand your global business knowledge by networking with local companies overseas and experiencing a new culture. The career impact of a Boler MBA is formative and will help prepare you for this future of business and get more out of your career. This episode is brought to you with the support of our brilliant sponsor XDEEP and the patrons of Speaking Sidemount. Huge thanks to both. A few weeks back I received a message from Patrick Widmann asking if I had seen the efforts of Skanda Coffield... and for sure I had seen him featured in a couple of Phillip Lehman's Somos Los Cenotes videos most notably the Blue Abyss dive which was just stunning... If you haven't seen it... Check it out on the DRLocal YouTube channel - Somos Los Cenotes Episode 10. Patrick related that Skanda had knocked out over 700 hours of exploration on the KISS Sidewinder in the last 18 months and is one of the most active cave explorers on the planet... He had me at Sidewinder... So I reached out to Skanda and we got into it... so much so that we have two episodes of amazing material for you all. In this the first... Skanda and I discussed... His background in diving, how he came to base himself in Mexico, his work at Protec Tulum, and then we dive deep into his exploration projects how he uses the KISS Sidewinder to go places no human has been before. To round it all out, Skanda shares his best and worst moments in diving... All this and much more... Image credit and thanks to - Joram Mennes and Alvaro Herrero. **Jaws Turns Up in Florida** Sharks are the reason why many people won't go in the water, but Amber and Tommy Allore, a couple of free-divers from Stuart, FL, were thrilled to get some photographs of a great white, a rare visitor to that stretch, while spearfishing with friends off Jupiter last month. They estimated the shark to be around 12 feet long. Meanwhile, Florida's legislature is preparing a statewide ban on the practice of fishermen dumping fish guts in the ocean to lure sharks closer to beaches and, too often, to swimmers and ocean dippers. **Cyprus fines US and Norwegian men for illegal shipwreck search** [https://www.tornosnews.gr/en/tourism-businesses/thematic-tourism/35072-cyprus-fines-us-and-norwegian-men-for-illegal-shipwreck-search.html](http://) **Did You Hear a Fish Bomb?** Reef Check Malaysia has decided to put a spotlight on marine debris in this International Year of the Reef, because they are seeing alarming amounts of plastic and other trash on Malaysian beaches, and they'll kick off their campaign with beach cleanups on 3 areas and other islands. However, fish bombing is still a problem in the area, the organization state. If you are diving in Malaysian waters and hear dynamite fishing in action, you can report it by emailing reportfishbomb@reefcheck.org.my with date, time and location. **The World's Deepest Swimming Pools** The 148-foot-deep DeepSpot, is set to open this fall in the Polish town of Msxczonow, 25 miles from Warsaw. Visitors can freedive and scuba in water temperatures of 90-93°F, and cave diving beginners can train in underwater caves. But DeepSpot won't hold the world record for too long. Blue Abyss, currently under construction in Colchester, England, will be 164 feet deep. Those two are following on the success of diver-friendly pools Y-40 Deep Joy in the northern Italian town of Montegrotto Terme (138 feet) and Nemo 33 with divers in Brussels, Belgium (113 feet). **World's deepest pool to open in Poland** [https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/worlds-deepest-pool-scli-intl/index.html](http://) **Key West Bans Popular Sunscreens** Following in Hawaii's footsteps, City Council members in this Florida Keys town voted 6-1 last month to ban sales of sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemicals shown to damage coral. The U.S. National Park Service issued a statement after the Key West vote, recommending people buy skincare products containing titanium oxide or zinc oxide, which are considered natural alternatives to those two banned chemicals. **Tracking the sunscreen crackdown** [https://www.cosmeticsbusiness.com/news/article_page/Tracking_the_sunscreen_crackdown/153414](http://) **A Pretty Weird Poop Story** Scientists often get excited about the animal excrement they find. But one research team also got a surprise when they found a USB memory stick inside the frozen poop of a leopard seal on New Zealand's Oreti Beach. It was in good condition, so they decided to search for the owner with the help of social media and news outlets. That's how Amanda Nally, a self-proclaimed seal enthusiast, was shocked to see some of her footage of playful sea lion pups in nearby Porpoise Bay appear on the nightly news. The story gets even more bizarre – turns out the memory stick was found enmeshed in feathers and bones, indicating it was inside a seabird the leopard seal had preyed upon. Nally says she must have dropped the memory stick while beach walking. **TV special on Le Griffon shipwreck to air in May** [https://www.manitoulin.ca/tv-special-on-le-griffon-shipwreck-to-air-in-may/](http://) **Search for lost sea containers leads to discovery of 16th-century Dutch shipwreck** [https://www.foxnews.com/science/search-for-lost-sea-containers-leads-to-discovery-of-16th-century-dutch-shipwreck](http://)
