In this episode Tara talks to a rock and roller, a rebel, who also happens to be an excellent photographer, Mallorca Aborigine, and free spirit, Pere Colom. In their talk, Pere brings us back to the mystic year of 1979 when the music scene in Deia was as wild and experimental as the musicians who played it. Pere's sense of adventure and his credo of “Porque No?,” makes this a super fun talk and reminds us that in its core, Deia has always been a haven for creativity like no other.

When you think of workplace wellness, you may picture gym memberships and yoga mats. But joy, empathy, and inclusion also create a healthy and high-performing workplace culture! We need to reimagine what wellness means!Today, Misha Safran, shares how empathy intersects with inclusion to foster innovation and equity. We also discuss how to reframe the misconceptions about empathy that exist in high-pressure workplaces. With brilliant mindset shifts and practical tips, she shares how leaders can model empathy without feeling performative, and how to navigate conflict using empathy and emotional intelligence. Misha shares the four elements of joy and why you can be more successful when you embrace them so your team can break free from chaos and transform that energy into creativity, problem-solving, and success. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Empathy is love, care, and concern - not agreement. It's having conversations, it's listening to know what's going on, and it's having healthy boundaries.Empathy before accusation.Empathy might look different depending on personality - it doesn't have to mean being touchy-feely or crying on the floor with your employees.Especially in conflict, urgency causes chaos - slow down, take a pause, take a breath, and respond, don't react. Slow down to build up. We are delighted to be joined by Carole Copeland Thomas as we dive into a critical and timely issue: the evolving legal and political landscape of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).On February 13, 16 state attorneys general challenged federal DEI policies under Executive Order 14173—a bold move that raises big questions for organizations and employees alike. So, what does this mean for businesses? How can companies navigate DEI in a rapidly shifting legal environment while staying compliant and committed to inclusion? This is a conversation every leader needs to hear. Nick Papagni, the "AgMeter" starts the show off with a feature interview on cherries with Morada Produce Company's Michael Jameson. Produce discussed the upcoming cherry season, noting that California produces over 2.2 million boxes of cherries. He highlighted the challenges in estimating crop volumes due to the bloom stage and the impact of weather on pollination. Jameson emphasized the importance of accurate timing for retailers and the use of advanced technology like optical sorters for quality control. He also addressed the impact of tariffs and exchange rates on export markets, noting that 71% of the crop goes to the domestic market, with 29% to international markets. Jameson stressed the need for a strong domestic foundation due to the volatility of international markets. The AgNet News Hour hosts discussed the Trump administration's release of billions for rural energy projects, emphasizing the need for grant recipients to rewrite their funding purposes to align with the administration's energy goals. The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), which supports rural energy projects, has been on hold due to litigation. The conversation also touched on the removal of DEIA and climate mandates from grant applications. Additionally, the hosts critiqued the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act, noting its bureaucratic complexity. The segment concluded with a discussion on the impact of California's gray wolf population on agriculture. In this week's Almond Board of California feature, we talk about the importance of getting involved in the Almond Board of California. Their call for candidates deadline for the Board of Directors election is April 1, but Committees will be held in July. Justin Morehead is a current Board Member and is on committees.
Angus and Sal stall for time before their guest arrives. Ethan Pace (Jason Summers) comes on the show to discuss DEIA in Super City but it seems like something else is bugging him. The post EP130 – The Exact Distance Between Us appeared first on PodCavern.
Who's afraid of DEI? And why?Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) initiatives have become institutional mainstays in corporate and academic settings—but they are currently under attack. In this episode of Hotel Bar Sessions, Leigh and Devonya sit down with Freedom Rider and retired Associate Professor of History at Boston College, Paul Breines, to reflect on the evolution of social justice movements from the civil rights struggles of the 1960s to today's embattled DEIA programs. How did a radical movement for racial justice morph into bureaucratic diversity training? And how should we understand the backlash against DEIA as part of a longer history of reactionary politics? Is what we're seeing in today's political climate a Second Reconstruction or a Second Redemption? The hosts discuss the ideological shifts that have transformed how both the left and right frame issues of race, gender, sexuality, ability, and inclusion—asking whether the language of justice has been co-opted by those seeking to dismantle it. From the Freedom Rides to contemporary campus activism, we dig into what has changed, what remains the same, and whether today's movements need a more radical edge. What kind of activism does this moment demand?Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-175-dei-then-and-now-with-paul-breines-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! Earlier this month, the city of Bend announced it is seeking applicants to fill three vacancies on its Human Rights and Equity Commission. Its goals include advocating for historically marginalized or underrepresented groups, evaluating city policies or regulations for potential barriers they may create and recommending how to remove them. The commission is one of two community advisory groups convened by Bend’s Accessibility and Equity Department, which also provides linguistic services to non-native English speakers, and an array of other programs and training on diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Meanwhile, Deschutes County commissioners recently voted to end the county’s DEIA committee. Andrés Portela, Bend’s equity and inclusion director, joins us to talk about his efforts amid the Trump administration’s backlash against DEI initiatives in government agencies, institutions and workplaces
The Legal Defense Fund and Lambda Legal have filed a federal lawsuit challenging three executive orders issued by President Donald Trump that ban diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs—even alleging the policies effectively erase transgender people from federal protections. The lawsuit, brought on behalf of the National Urban League, the National Fair Housing Alliance, and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, argues that the orders will severely restrict the organizations' ability to provide essential services, including HIV treatment, fair housing, and job training. Critics warn the policies could reverse decades of civil rights progress, putting vulnerable communities at risk. Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, called the measures “discriminatory at best and an attempt at institutionalized economic oppression.” The lawsuit also claims that the executive orders violate constitutional rights by chilling free speech and limiting efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. Ryan Grim then joins, briefly touching on some of the major reporting coming out of Drop Site News over the last few months – including a major report on Israel's US of an AI-weapons system to target Hamas leadership when home with their family – before he, Sam, and Emma dive deep into the recent hostile takeover by Elon Musk at the US Treasury, with the Treasury's place signing the checks that keep our government working central to Elon's first-order goals of personal enrichment and gutting the government – with the former particularly influential for an individual who makes most of his money off of federal contracts. After expanding on the latter with the Trump Administration's ongoing campaign to “traumatize” (per OMB head Russ Vought) federal workers, and the ultimate goal of the Administration to shift into an era of corporate governance, Ryan, Sam, and Emma look to the Trump Administration's attacks on DEI and DEIA, with Ryan addressing some of his recent comments on the failure of DEI to actually address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion beyond shielding corporations from responsibility, before wrapping up the free half by touching on the threat of Trump's impending tariffs. And in the Fun Half: First, Sam and Emma unpack the Trump Administration's predictably insane and destructive response to the recent plane crash out of DC and plead with Democratic leadership to follow Gov. Pritzker's lead and act like an actual opposition party. They also dive deep into the embarrassing lack of knowledge about Medicare and Medicaid that RFK puts on display in his confirmation hearing for HHS director and the GOP's continuing attacks on Social Security, before watching Stephen Crowder stumble through self-incrimination at his defamation deposition, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Jackie Flynn Mogensen, reporter covering science and health at Mother Jones, to discuss her recent reporting on the Trump administration's actions towards the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Then, he speaks with Elie Mystal, justice correspondent at The Nation, to discuss his recent piece on the Trump administration's to dismantle DEIA efforts across the federal government. First, Sam runs through updates on the potential blockage of Trump's federal funds freeze, Trump's attempt to push out federal workers, Elon's interns' influence at the OPM, the gutting of the Equal Opportunity Commission, a trans care ban for anyone 19 and under, education funding, and Trump's grotesque immigration regime, before expanding on the enthusiasm from conservative media over Trump taking a sledgehammer to the government's ability to govern. Jackie Flynn Mogensen then joins, diving right into the devastating impact of Trump's first wave of federal funding freezes on the US public health regime, unpacking the pause on the NIH's $40B in funding to outside research – funding that spurs over a 2:1 return in economic activity – alongside the complete cut off of communications between health departments both internally and with the public. After expanding on the importance of broad-scale scientific research, Mogensen walks Sam through the drastic increase in insecurity and precarity among federal workers in these organizations, and why all of this dysfunction is ultimately the point of Trump's attacks on US public health infrastructure. Elie Mystal and Sam then unpack the utter nihilism of the Trump Administration's approach to the rule of law, particularly when bolstered by a Supreme Court intent on the destruction of the very same government. Next, Mystal walks through Trump's ongoing attack on DEI and DEIA policies, exploring their role as the white response to needing to “prove” the enforcement of the Civil Rights and Americans with Disabilities Acts, and what a world where the federal government refuses to act as an equal opportunity employer, nor defend equal opportunity employment, would look like. After touching on the Supreme Court's role in potentially bolstering Trump's executive takeover of the federal government – and why even a rebuke of Trump could spell trouble for future Democratic presidents – Elie and Sam wrap up with Democratic Leadership's failure to address any element of the material devastation Trump has already wrought on the country in less than two weeks. And in the Fun Half: Sam expands on the devastating impact of the “chaos is the point” ethos of the Trump Administration and the absurdity of blaming those materially affected over their vote, also touching on the utter failure of Democratic leadership to address this destruction, and looking at how a genuinely engaged opposition leader would respond to Trump in the form of JB Pritzker. Next, the MR Crew unpacks Rep. Rich Cormick's explanation on why taking away meals from kids is fine, actually, gets a window into the world of Harlan Crow from Redford in Dallas, and touches on the Trump Admin's decision to reverse (and maybe reverse the reversal?) of the recent OMB memo. They also dive deep into the devastating impact of Trump's first ten days on the agriculture industry, and watch RFK get grilled over his myriad dangerous hypocrisies, plus, your calls and IMs! Becoming a more equitable librarian is an ongoing process. In the face of the last decade's events and increased public awareness of issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), library workers in music libraries can do things to create the space in our teaching for optimal creativity and connection by and with our library users. As the editors of Music Information Literacy: Inclusion and Advocacy (Library Juice Press, 2024), Kathleen A. Abromeit and Dyani Sabin bring together contributions that imagine what it would be like to expand our inclusion structures so that we increasingly recognize and accommodate differences in our music libraries. The ways librarians teach and assist students must change to amplify the voices of those who have been traditionally marginalized and create effective and equitable libraries and classrooms. Doing so is a multi-part process, where critical information literacy overlaps with self-reflection as a librarian and a deep understanding that our students have identities and experiences that influence how they navigate their world. Many of our students have experienced trauma from the generational oppression of systemic racism, gender fluidity, invisible disabilities, discrimination, or poverty. Ongoing trauma triggers toxic stress that can rewire parts of the brain and impact one's ability to process information, formulate questions, and feel safe enough to be creative and in the zone of ideas. The chapters in the volume are authored by librarians who have actively been learning and self-reflecting on what is needed to invite users into their libraries and teaching spaces fully. The book is divided into three sections: Critical Theories, Concepts, & Reflections, Bringing Underrepresentation to the Forefront, and Supporting Activism. Each chapter includes case studies and discussion questions supporting ideas and concepts. A sample reading guide for each chapter is included as well. Kathleen A. Abromeit is the Head of the Conservatory Library at Oberlin College and Conservatory, and Dyani Sabin is a writer based in the Midwest. Jen Hoyer is Technical Services and Electronic Resources Librarian at CUNY New York City College of Technology.
