People in the Belleisle area are rallying to help a family in Hatfield Point, after they lost their home to a fire. But that's just one of the good deeds the Belleisle Valley 10 Buck Club has undertaken. The club was started by John Urquhart, he speaks with host Rachel Cave about the club and some of the people they've supported.

Soon after seeing it, I understood its significance by seeing Buck play an identical one on the Hee Haw television show. Later, via the influence of Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, and the Desert Rose Band in the 1980s, I would dig back and start listening to all of the great albums that Owens made through the 50s and 60s that in turn influenced my heroes. Through the years, I kept looking for one, but one was never up for sale nearby, as I really wanted to see what this Harmony-made mail-order guitar was like. It wasn't until recently that I was able to test out and acquire one of these red, white, and blue beauties from one of the fine chaps at Glaser Instruments, and I was able to finally join the “Buck Club.” This of course threw me down the rabbit hole of finding out everything that I could online from sites like SilvertoneWorld.Net and even calling up Buckaroo Jim Shaw, who continues to run Buck's Crystal Palace club in Bakersfield, CA to get the full low-down on the story behind it. And though Owens is certainly the star here, I have to give Pat Smear of Nirvana, and the great Ryan Adams credit for their role in raising the “cool” factor on these crazy 70s creations. To close the episode, I share the story that Jim Shaw shared with me that they sold hundreds of warehoused versions of the Buck models to cover their expenses during the pandemic. It was hard for me not to see this as Owens working things out from beyond the grave. Special thanks to Buckaroo Jim Shaw, and Buck Owens' Crystal Palace.www.BuckOwens.comAlso for the wonderful information gathered from Silvertone World.https://www.silvertoneworld.net/acoustic/1219buckowens/1219_Buck_Owens_American.html#askzac #buckowens #buckowensamericanSupport the show

The one aspect of Zac Blair's personality that has always stood out most to me is his ambition. He wants to be one of the best golfers in the world but he also is on a mission to create memorable golf experiences for those who share his love for the game. I first witnessed those traits while attending Blair's annual event, The Ringer, at Sweetens Cove Golf Club in 2018. Over the course of three days, I saw firsthand the drive that powers Blair as a PGA Tour player and entrepreneur. It was palpable and impressive. Blair declared then that he was on a journey to create a unique golf club in his home state of Utah - The Buck Club. While he continues to sell fun golf themed merchandise under The Buck Club brand, those plans are currently on hold. However, a new vision for a modern golf club is now being built by Blair and other founders outside of Aiken, South Carolina. That club is being called The Tree Farm. Blair joins me on Mid-Am Crisis to discuss the state of the Tree Farm project. We also talked about his pending return to the tour after a year long medical leave for shoulder surgery. During our discussion, Blair shared his excitement to have construction under way at The Tree Farm, what it's like working with Tom Doak on the routing, and how the club's design will help drive its golf culture. He touched on his creative process for The Buck Club merchandise, why he loves golden age architecture, and much more. I'm thrilled that Blair and his partners are now under construction at The Tree Farm and hope to get up that way soon and see the work myself. When the project is complete it will undoubtedly be a testament to Blair's love for the game and of course that ambition I first saw some years ago. Most people wouldn't be able to pull it all off but Blair won't be deterred. What a great thing to root for. Thanks as always for listening to Mid-Am Crisis. Joe Zwickl is one of the most interesting men in golf these days. If there is a gathering of golfing diehards going down somewhere there is a good chance he's going to show up. Zwickl is often found hitting long drives and talking about the game at events hosted by No Laying Up, The Buck Club, and other golfing collectives. I first met him at such an outing and have since enjoyed rounds with him at a variety of golf destinations across the South. He's the exact sort of golfer I like getting in trouble with. Zwickl tends to stand out in the crowd too, he's a tall lad with tattoos and some serious game, and his story is just as interesting as his style. Based in Pinehurst, North Carolina there is nobody more equipped to show you around the Sandhills than him. With a background in the culinary industry, he also knows his way around a kitchen and can give you great restaurant recommendations for anywhere golf is played. I've been fortunate to call Zwickl a friend for a few years now and I'm looking forward to the next walk we can take together. Until then, I'm glad we got to catch up for a chat as he was getting ready to meet up with nearly 100 golf sickos at Zac Blair's Ringer event at Sweetens Cove Golf Club. If I had to bet he made a few new friends while there. To see more of Joe Zwickl in action, check him out on No Laying Up's Wild World of Golf https://nolayingup.com/videos/wwog/wild-word-of-golf/no-laying-up-s-wild-world-of-golf-the-cradle-at-pinehurst You can also see some great swings from Zwickl in my recent Golf is Everywhere video essay from Pinehurst No. 3 https://jayrevell.com/golf-is-everywhere-pinehurst-3/ For more of my writings and other musings on the game, please visit me at www.jayrevell.com Thanks for listening! -J

Hello everyone, welcome to The Coach Steve Clark PhD Show where the aim is to encourage, inspire and equip coaches, players and parents who in turn inspire and equip others to promote tennis, foster sportsmanship, and develop greater players and people. So thanks for joining me and I hope you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the conversation. In this podcast you are in for a treat of Hall of Fame, collegiate-tennis-guru, and bar-setting proportions. My guest is long time friend and colleague Dick Gould, the long time head coach of Stanford Men’s Tennis. Coach Gould set the standard of success in collegiate tennis. As a recruiter, consummate promotor of the game and coach to so many national champions, All-Americans, olympians, world class and Grand Slam players, his handprint is impressive. And his influence continues as the John L Hinds Director of Tennis At Stanford where he overseas major events (WTA events), community relations, fundraising, and inner city academic-tennis related programs for youth. He was the head coach for 38 years (1966-2004) at his Alma Mater (BS 1959, MA 1960) where he set the standard of college tennis in many ways (we will get to that later). He is the winningest tennis coach at the Farm 776-148 (.840), won 17 NCAA Team Championships! But the rest stems from this excellence: 10 NCAA Singles Champions, 7 NCAA Doubles Champions, 50 All Americans, and 9 players in top 15 ATP singles and 14 in top 10 doubles. ETC! But more importantly, and the reasons actually for all the success, Dick is a contagious leader. He is habitually friendly, optimistic, congratulatory and makes those around him better and feel important. No wonder all this success follows. We delve into great wealth of wisdom on these topics and more: Healthy competition, fundraising (Buck Club), how the game has changed, advice to parents and coaches, great coaches that influenced him, etc. Be sure to see CoachSteveClarkPhD.Com for other podcasts, blogs, resources and discussions.
