Mat Goggin joins us on this episode to chat all things 7 Mile Beach. Listeners will undoubtedly be aware that Mike De Vries and Mike Clayton of CDP Golf Architects have been toiling away on Mr Goggin's behalf over the last few years massaging a sandy waterfront site into one of the most eagerly anticipated golf developments of the past few years. Mat fills us in on the three years that have passed since his last appearance on the show, providing us with updates on the ongoing grow in, a likely opening timeline, an interesting story of Mr De Vries and his bullet cut - unsurprisingly this particular shot type works quite well around the course that he built! We also get the low down on the North course development that King Collins Dormer are planning on the city side of the 7 Mile Beach site. It was great to welcome Mat to the pod again, thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the chat. The 7 Mile Beach proshop can be visited by clicking here (https://7-mile-beach.myshopify.com/). Ryan Noades joins us today to take a look at what may very well be JF Abercromby's design opus. The Addington was of course a collaboration between Abercromby and Harry S Colt, expertly routed to circumnavigate a sand and gravel hilltop heathland site some 9 miles due south of central London. The Noades' have owned the Addington since 2006 and have lovingly curated the course ever since. Over the years it became apparent to Ryan and his family that a world class golf course was hiding in plain site beneath the organic detritus that had invaded playing corridors, reduced strategic options and hampered firm and fast playing conditions. In 2019 in conjunction with the design firm Clayton De Vries & Pont a course correction was undertaken to commit fully to a faithful restoration of The Addington to its' former glory. We endeavour to explore a small part of this journey today, hopefully leaving you with a better feel for both the place and indeed a driven individual who is equally besotted, energised and excited by all of the possibilities that The Addington represents. Thanks for tuning in, we hope you enjoy the show! I've visited The Addington twice thus far and took some time to write about what I've found, please click on this link (https://shanederby.substack.com/p/the-archbishops-summer-palace) to have a read. Massive episode of Talk Birdie To Me today, in fact our longest episode so far. Could be because Mark consistently derailed the pod, but it could be that there was lots of stuff to talk about. Truth is probably somewhere in the middle.Nick has come in worked up over slow play after watching the Desert Classic in California and the Dubai Desert Classic at the weekend. Mark agrees and is amazed when Nick tells him the durations of some of the rounds. Nick gives his view again that stroke penalties should be introduced. Mark has three things he'd like to see happen that he feels will address slow play instantly. Nick's big beef is that the players are allowed to get away with it and the time limits are not being policed. In the Desert Classic, William Mouw shot 13 on a par 5, Nick saw it, Mark didn't - but it was what happened on the next hole that Nick found even more amusing.Mark mentions a major award Australia's OCM have won in the US for their work on the Medinah course near Chicago. Mark tells a story about him and Mike Clayton playing with a young kid from Queensland called Adam Scott at Cranbourne, and after seeing his first hole thinking he was rubbish.....but Adam then went on to blow them both away. Mark talks about how Adam was 'using the force' with his putting. We discuss Brandel Chamblee's tweet this week criticising LIV. Nick raises Rory McIlroy's chat with young Tom McKibbin about going to LIV or not.Top 5 from Mark is on the most disastrous holes ever. Plenty of feedback, including feedback from a tour pro giving one of our illustrious hosts a whack around the choppers. Very funny.PING Global with Nick is nearly derailed by Mark who has discovered AI this week and has been creating 'songs'. Unfortunately, he plays a few, and decides he wants to finish the pod by playing one in full - feel free to turn off when you get to that part.Nick's masterclass is inspired by William Mouw, video on socials. We're coming from Titleist and Footjoy HQ, and we're here thanks to our great partners:The watchMynumbers app, play smarter and use your data. The New South Wales Premier Chris Minns yesterday announced that the busy and popular public golf course at Moore Park will be carved up to create more free-form parkland, at the expense of golf holes. It seems like golf is paying the price on the back end of unfettered urban development on the edge of Centennial Park and Moore Park.  As the population of Zetland and surrounding streets rises, the absence of sufficient green space allowance within that development footprint is becoming more obvious. High density residential development during the tenure of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore and previous NSW premier Bob Carr now sees current day politicians reach into the golf course to ameliorate the absence of green space allowance within the suburban development footprint. Mike Clayton joins us to discuss the issue, and how similar themes are playing out in other states of Australia.  Mike and Scott propose several possible outcomes for the golf course.  We also urge all those who love golf to engage with the impending public comment period regarding the Moore Park precinct, and the fate of the golf course.   As discussed in this episode – several other podcasts of interest -   State of the Game Episode #128 with Dr Josh Ralston - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/sog-128-digging-deeper-on-saudi-arabia-with-dr-joshua/id497208674?i=1000631324629   The Good-Good Golf Podcast Episode #162 with Karen Lunn of the Australian Golf Industry Council on what golf gives back to the community - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-good-good-golf-podcast/id1480970735?i=1000631821147   And a link to contribute submissions regarding the fate of Oakleigh golf course in Melbourne, where Sandy Jamieson is fighting local council who seek to re-purpose the small parcel of land on which the course current serves a diverse and sizeable portion of the local community - https://www.monash.vic.gov.au/About-Us/News/Monash-calls-for-feedback-to-shape-future-planning-of-Oakleigh-Golf-Course   Images related to this episode can be found on our Instagram page (@AustralianGolfPassport) and on Twitter (@AusGolfPassport). Mathew Goggin has had one of the most interesting careers in golf and he's not yet old enough to play on the Champions Tour. Growing up in Tasmania as the son of legendary golfer Lindy Goggin (née Jennings), Mat played frequently at Royal Hobart Golf Club, which is close to the Hobart International Airport as well as a strip of sand dunes and pine trees called Seven Mile Beach. Mat often wondered why there wasn't a course on this landmass, amid the spectacular dunes. Future Tassie golfers will no longer have to wonder: with the help of architects Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries, Mat is developing a new public golf course at Seven Mile Beach, set to open in late 2024. In addition, he has already begun to plan a second course next door, this one called 5 Mile Beach. Matt gives Garrett the lowdown on these projects and also talks about his outstanding competitive career, highlighted by a victory at the 1995 Australian Amateur, five wins on the Korn Ferry Tour, and a very close call at the 2009 Open Championship. (Yes, that Open—the Tom Watson vs. Stewart Cink one.) Mentioned in the episode: Mat's excellent essay "10 years and counting...," a reflection on his late grandfather's influence on his life in golf

One of Sydney's finest courses and clubs has the spotlight for this edition of the pod, but there's plenty of additional discussion in a spritely, slightly shorter session than usual. Those interested can secure tickets here - https://marvelstadium.com.au/event/stadium-golf/   At the other end of the tech continuum, the 2023 Australian Hickory Shaft Championships are taking place in Melbourne in September, with Woodlands and Kingston Heath co-hosting. Registration details can be found via this link  - https://www.golfgenius.com/register?league_id=9594741941925357895   Discussion makes a brief turn into the impending course work by Gil Hanse at Royal Sydney Golf Club, and the potential of the site.  Some points can be taken from Los Angeles Country Club's North course, recent venue for the US Open, given that it too was a site of extensive work by Hanse & co. The notion of some of those characters at LACC being instilled within Royal Sydney's course is an appealing thought.   The bulk of the episode is devoted to The Lakes, one of the finest layouts in Sydney. Our episode covers the all bases from the early days, dating back to 1928 and the original course of Eric Apperly and Tom Howard, the freeway intrusion and necessary reworking by Von Hagge and Devlin in the late 1960s, to the current day version of the course, wonderfully reworked by Mike Clayton & colleagues.  Scott and Matt consider the strengths and character of the course, touching on a range of topics from grassing, pronounced green contours, reachable par 5s, and par 3 holes concluding each nine.  The course's standout holes and storied tournament history are also points of discussion. This week on Need a 4th, Alan Shipnuck and Michael Bamberger are along for the ride as Geoff Ogilvy welcomes an old mate and a fellow Aussie, the golfing polymath Michael Clayton! Michael can do it all. He played for years on the Australian and European tours, he writes about the game with spectacular clarity, his course-design work will stand the test of time, and as you are about to find out, he talks about the game like a Down Under version of Ben Crenshaw, with some Peter Thomson mixed in. Elsewhere at FPC this week, we celebrate golf in the great cultural, financial and sporting capital of Melbourne and we revisit the December fun of the Sandbelt Invitational, the tournament co-founded by Clayton and Ogilvy.  There are few people in the world (if any) who know more about golf in the sand, and golf in Melbourne, than Clayton and Ogilvy. Give a listen and hear for yourself. G'day!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Even for State of the Game it's been a long break and even for us it's a long episode. There's also some chat about Geoff's upcoming book Golf Architecture For Normal People which you can pre order at the links below.
