This podcast episode features an engaging dialogue with Steve Wheatcroft, a former tour player and author, as we delve into various aspects of his experiences both on and off the golf course. Central to our discussion is Wheatcroft's reflections on the evolving relationship between professional golfers and enthusiasts, particularly noting a growing divide exacerbated by the commercialization of the sport. He articulates a desire for greater approachability among players, citing the more accessible nature of female golfers compared to their male counterparts. Our conversation also traverses personal anecdotes, including his culinary preferences and memorable moments from his touring days, which enrich the narrative of his life in golf. Moreover, Wheatcroft elaborates on his book, "Cocktails and Range Balls," which serves as both an entertaining and insightful chronicle of his journey in the golfing realm.Links referenced in this episode:amazon.comCompanies mentioned in this episode:AmazonTigerMr. PalmerMr. NicholasYouTube GolfTitleistMulligan FoundationThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: OP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

We start today with Nick talking us through the new Long Island course(s) which he played late last week, a course redesign that Mark describes as a 'new concept in golf', whereby it is basically 3 courses. Nick played one of them and outlines what it was like, he cannot wait to go back. The team at OCM have done a great job.And onto a huge talking point of the week. The tournament at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas, where the course underwent a $25m redesign to make it tougher for the pros, was it? Well perhaps not. Nick and Mark look at the scores....wowee. Mark describes course designers adding in multiple pin placements a 'con' and explains why.Nick has got his hands on a survey that the PGA Tour has sent to Tour Pros, and there are some fascinating questions that they have asked. He talks through some of the most intriguing ones. Mark shares a revealing stat on his club head speed and carry today vs when he was on tour.....interesting! And we compare a couple of Titleist drivers, a newer one vs an older one. Nick also has a stat, one to do with Tiger and his driving distance.Mark says 'Rory McIlroy broke my heart'. Was this a romantic situation? Is it love scorned? No, it's far worse, Mark explains on the pod. Nick, being supportive, after hearing the story says that Rory is wrong. We discuss bifurcation for a bit. It really is the only solution. And what about Bryson? A YouTube star or a Pro Golfer? What will he do? He has said he is uncertain. Mark is 100% clear on what he'd like Bryson to do, Nick more circumspect. And for Hostplus, our 'plus' for golf this week is the Long Island redevelopment! After the turn.....following Nick's Top 5 nicest pro golfers last week, today Mark lists the top 5 'arsehole' acts he has seen Tour Pros do. Does he name names? Well, one. But Nick also has a story about an arsehole act that happened to him from a Tour Pro, he refuses to give the name, despite Mark and Dan trying to trap him - but from the clues, see if you can guess? The PING globals, plenty to talk through, including the great win by Scott Hend at the weekend! Fantastic to see.For Southern Golf Club, plenty of feedback, including on Nick and Mark's analysis of Cam Smith's swing last week, and we have a listen to his coach Claude Harmon speaking on his 'Son of a Butch' podcast about working with Cam.Feedback on cheating, including an incident at The Grange in Adelaide, AO Comments, and we get our discussion on where Lions live from last week clarified. And for the Golf Clearance Outlet, a cracking masterclass from Nick O'Hern inspired by watching Si Woo Kim at the weekend doing something unusual with his putting. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Hostplus, Talk Birdie To Me's official retirement partnerBMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; The Find My Player app - follow every player on every tour; And Southern Golf Club. This week, the greatest players in the world descend on Pennsylvania for the 2026 PGA Championship at the legendary Aronimink Golf Club. Strap in, this is a big pod - albeit a day late as Nick has been in Queensland - but we got there! Also, before we start a reminder of our annual survey (there are prizes!), here's the link: https://access.itsmystation.com/s3/talk-birdie-to-me-2Onto the show....Mark Allen in particular has come in hot over what happened on the Asian Tour event at the weekend, and we launch into it from the top. Cheating in professional golf. There are at least three instances we know of in recent times, Inhoi Hur's behaviour and actions at the weekend at the Namseoul Country Club were disgraceful. Mark Allen says the facts in this story have shocked him, saying what happened at the weekend has blown him away.Nick and Mark explain what happened, and give their view on why it was a disgrace to professional golf, saying it can only be described as cheating. Essentially, he was given a mulligan on a professional tournament. We compare Inhoi Hur's actions to those of Cam Young at the weekend, who called a penalty on himself incurring a one-shot penalty. Mark says what the penalty for cheating should be for a first offence, and a second offence...Nick agrees entirely. Nick spoke to a Tour Pro who played in the tournament and said that all the players were 'headless' with anger over what happened. Is cheating in professional golf endemic? Well Nick says there was always rumours about the Asian Tour, and both Nick and Mark have experienced it. But there are other recent examples, and Mark names one player who was recently banned in Australia, and simply moved to another tour. And we discuss another Australian pro who was recently caught dropping a ball out of his pocket in a tournament.Phew. Onto LIV. We talk about the Jon Rahm news, and Scott O'Neil's comments about the search for investment for LIV to continue beyond 2026. Does it survive? Nick and Mark give their view. That's a plus for Hostplus this week is an unusual one - the plus for golf is that Inhoi Hur did not win the tournament, that's good for golf, he didn't deserve to and thankfully he didn't.And into the turn, we chat about the Australian Golf Digest's Top 100 golf course rankings list which has come out over the last few days. Do Nick and Mark rate it? We discuss. In the turn - speaking of cheating, Nick and Mark discover that the Tour Pro whose card they refused to sign was the same person! They don't name him, but they give a few clues if you feel like sleuthing....For Betr, Nicks Top 5 is - if you are going to cheat in pro golf (which you should not) these are the 5 most common ways to do it.Feedback for Southern Golf Club - we start with a few on our John Senden interview, could have read 100 out, there were heaps. Question about Adam Scott hitting the wrong ball at the weekend in a tournament, comment about Carlotta Ciganda's slow play, and a couple of LIV comments - there's been heaps, but we touch on a couple.Nick takes us around the world in the PING globals, lots going on, and some great performances. Mark sidetracks the PING globals with a discussion about chocolate bars....which requires your input if you can help. For the Golf Clearance Outlet, Mark's masterclass today is inspired by Cameron Young's wedges, and why he feels high bounce wedges are worth a shot. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Hostplus, Talk Birdie To Me's official retirement partnerBMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And Southern Golf Club. Once again, we have a green light: 120 from the hole in the fairway. How different are amateurs and pros? In this episode, Lou asks Mark and Greg how 10 and 20 index golfers compare on this shot to a Tour pro. And perhaps a lot of 10s and 20s have their expectations set by the Tour numbers, rather than reality closer to home. Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap. Every Monday we'll do a 'Mini' episode, and you'll never guess the name.....we're calling it a 'Monday Mini'. Nice.Today, Nick and Mark are discussing an issue that consistently comes up, raised by wolfpacker Stockers, on the 'tyranny of distance' and the challenge of the 'big boys' hitting the ball longer all the time. Stockers has a couple of suggestions on this, and on bunkers and how they are treated. It's a ripper point and he has a couple of interesting ideas....but do Nick and Mark agree with them?We discuss Stockers ideas, issues with drivers, bunker treatments, and the old 'bifurcation' conversation. Nick and Mark agree, partly, on how bifurcation should be handled with one significant differing view.Nick has an idea about a tournament he would love to see come to fruition. He says it never will, but he'd love it. And we wrap the show with some footage of Mark and his buggy casually strolling around the Box Hill Golf Club, filmed from the 4th hole green by Dan, whose house backs onto Box Hill Golf Club. If you're listening to the pod you won't see it, but you can picture Mark, putter in hand, strolling along looking very pleased with himself.A fun Monday Mini today on Talk Birdie !We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Hostplus, Talk Birdie To Me's official retirement partnerBMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And Southern Golf Club. Every friday we do a feedback pod, and from today we'll call them what they are - a Friday Feedback pod! Today we get off to an average start when Nick and Mark start giving each other feedback on their FootJoy shirts....perhaps they misunderstood the concept of a Friday Feedback podcast. But after we clear up that misunderstanding, onto the good stuff.Ando is from NSW Golf Club and has messaged us about our comments on how windy the course is, he has a story about a Victorian Golf Course which, at least on the day he was there, was so windy the siren sounded and they couldn't finish the round.Luke has a comment on 7 Mile Beach in Hobart.Willow has an observation about Seve Ballestero and his caddy, the legendary Billy Foster. Mark talks about his first ever full-time caddy, and Nick explains how Alana was his 'spotter' when he was looking to hire a caddy. Whilst on caddies - Christopher has a request for us to get Nick's long-time caddy Wilbur on the pod.Ian has some pretty strong opinions on handicapping. We find out if Nick and Mark agree. And then...okay this could go pear-shaped....Andrey wants to know that if Nick and Mark today, at their current age and form, played an LPGA Tour Pro would they win? The answer comes with some caveats, but it's a bit of a 'yes and no' answer - the boys explain their thinking and what they believe would happen.James has a great story about his wife Jo and her performance on a particular hole at Huntingdale a couple of weeks ago. David was attempting to join a club, however they have not allowed him to given he wants to bring his own golf scooter/buggy....and asks about that. And we finish with a ripping question from Craig for Nick about Rory McIlroy and The Masters.Have a great weekend, that's our Friday Feedback pod this week! PGA Tour Pro Charley Hoffman talks Masters and rolling back drivers
We must apologise for the start of today's pod. Mark and Dan were ready to go, Nick was extremely unprofessional and decided to send a text just as the show began, so there's a slight delay while Nick finishes his extremely important, far more important than Mark, Dan and the Wolfpackers, text message.But...once we get through this hiccup in the Talk Birdie Zen, we get on with the show! JH has a request for Nick and Mark which the boys don't mind....and this leads onto a chat about a very famous, and very funny, movie that Nick has (embarrassingly) never seen !?!?!?! He really is having a shocker today. Onto Andrew, who has a comment on 'golf farces'. Tony heard Mark talking about his desire to travel to Ireland, and has some course suggestions for him. Whilst in the UK, Craig played the London Club last week and gives a report on the conditions. Trevor has messaged us about slow play and aim point, and believes a particularly massive Tour Pro is guilty of the former - but is a protected species.Mark has been shopping on Temu again....sheez.Alex has a question. His club head speed isn't great and he has found a way around it that works for him, and is interested in Nick and Marks thoughts on it. Peter watched John Senden play a few months back in the Australian Open, with Parkinsons, Peter also plays with Parkinsons and has asked if we can get Sendo on the pod to chat about how he does it, some of the tools he uses. Mark tells a great story about playing with Sendo in New Zealand where a shot went extremely pear-shaped.And Chris from Toronto writes in to let us know he enjoys watching the pod on YouTube, and has a recommendation for another pod we should check out....we've not heard of it, but when we google it, it is massive! Another massive pod today, we start with Mark reviewing Huntingdale, he played it at the weekend. Does it play as good as it looks? He tells us.And then. Gary Woodland. What a performance, what a story, and what emotion. A fantastic and very popular win in Texas, nobody deserved this more. Nick and Mark discuss his performance and how he has come to this point. We listen to/watch the winning putt, and hear some of the post win interview. Are challenging pin placements late in a round good or bad for golf? That might depend on whether you're playing or watching. Certainly Karl Vilips might have some strong views after he ping-ponged across the green at the weekend. Nick and Mark give us their thoughts.Tiger. We have to discuss Tiger. And we do. The BMW Touch of Class this week goes to Min Woo Lee after his extraordinary bunker shot at the weekend. And we award the Hostplus 'Thats a Plus' for golf to, who else, Gary Woodland. 7 Mile Beach. Nick and Mark have heard contrasting reviews - some love it, some feel it's very tough, maybe too tough. We discuss the reviews. After the turn, for Betr, Mark lists his Top 5 'gotcha holes', those holes that lull you into a false sense of security and you think you've got them, but then BAM they nail you.Nick takes us around the world in the PING Global Results. And in feedback for Southern Golf Club, plenty of whacks....some for one member of the team for something on last weeks pod, some for the entire team after something different on last weeks pod. And Mark reads out a text from a Tour Pro who listened to last weeks show where we discussed the Monday Q story on the player suspended for cheating, and makes some WILD accusations. We wrap the show with a masterclass from Nick - he calls this a 'combination masterclass', and it's a ripper. We start today's show as we did last week - by congratulating Hannah Green, 3 wins in a row and she appears well on track for a major in 2026. Nick and Mark discuss how she looks so comfortable and in control at the moment, Nick awards Hannah the Hostplus 'That's a Plus' for golf this week...hard to argue.Matt Fitzpatrick played beautifully at Valspar to win, he's in great form. However it wasn't all smooth sailing as he was frustrated by the slow play of his playing partner Adrien Dumont de Chassart who played with the speed of a slow moving turtle. Matt has spoken about this before, and he was clearly unhappy after the tournament - and rightly so. Nick and Mark discuss what the punishment should be, and why the powers that be seem to never do anything about it.An alarming story, that Nick and Mark were unaware of until they saw it on the Monday Q Twitter account about a young Tour Pro being banned for 6-months for cheating, however playing in a tournament in China at the weekend. We talk through the problems with this, and how the governing bodies could better approach it (rather than keeping it secret) to both act as a deterrent and a punishment, but also provide a path to redemption for one mistake.Jon Rahm's appeal has been dropped, what does it mean for the Ryder Cup?Rory McIlroy's menu for The Masters dinner is all over the internet, we discuss it - particularly the wine. Nick awards the BMW Touch of Class to the wine list. Leads to a chat about Nick and Mark playing at the weekend with Hostplus honcho's David and Mark at Victoria Golf Club, and particularly how it ended in the clubhouse! After the turn, Nick lists his Top 5 fast swings on the PGA Tour for Betr. Then into feedback for Southern Golf Club: feedback today on Tiger, Cheating from Tour Pros, clarity on our legal terminology that we mangled last week, Hawthorn's Mitch Lewis and his amazing round at PK North last week, and lots of comments on Radar - including some feedback from one particularly big name!Nick takes us around the world in the PING Global results, and Mark's masterclass for Sam and the team at the Golf Clearance Outlet is inspired by something Ludvig Åberg does in his pre-shot routine. Today we run through some questions from you and kick them around. We start with a message from a wolfpacker who seems to be a Tour Pro, and has written regarding Nick's story about not signing a card of a player in Asia some years ago, he had a similar story about playing on the Korean tour involving both a player and a rules official. Another wolfpacker asks Nick why he waited until the end of the round to raise the issue, rather than addressing it whilst on course.New listener Lee is working through the back catalogue of shows, and has a question about Marks recent masterclass on wedge distance control. And as we go to the turn, an update on young Sophie, a 9-year old wolfpacker who listens to the show with her Dad Travis, and sent her swing in a month ago....Travis has written in with some news on Sophie's golf. After the turn, Shankedit has written in, he's just moved to Perth and is after some advice from Nick on playing golf in a region (like Perth) where it is incessantly windy.Peter has a question about Tour Pro's swapping clubs during a tournament, leading to a chat about Justin Rose, and the PGA money winners list. And we finish with a couple of comments about Wayne 'Radar' Riley, one from a listener who rates him, and another with a question about his appearance....mmmm....We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Hostplus, Talk Birdie To Me's official retirement partnerBMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And Southern Golf Club. Phew this is a big show today, plenty of stuff that has happened, and plenty that is about to.We start with the Bay Hill tournament, a course that Nick has played many times and isn't fond of, he explains to Mark how differently the golf ball plays on Florida courses and why. We discuss Akshay Bhatia's brilliant shot on the par 5 16th hole, did he plan it that way? Doesn't matter....amazing. Mark was amazed about Rory's shot over the gallery, the footage is on the YouTube version of the show, it is wild. But back to Akshay. We have to discuss his putting. Is he anchoring? Nick says it looks like he may be but he'd give him the benefit of the doubt, Mark says he absolutely is. But Mark doesn't blame Akshay, he holds responsibility elsewhere, and explains who and why.We grab a broomstick putter at Titleist HQ and Nick shows us illegal and legal usage, and some of the nuances.Speaking of bending the rules. Travis Smyth. Did he improve his lie in Auckland at one point? A wolfpacker sent us in some vision from Kayo and we have a look, Nick and Mark give their views.Nick tells a story about the time he refused to sign the card of a pro he was playing with in a tournament. The BMW Touch of Class, Nick awards it to the Australian Women's Open, or particularly Kooyong, one of his favourite courses and he is excited to see it this weekend. Fingers crossed one of the incredible Aussie women get up for the win!Mark's 'That's a Plus' for Hostplus goes to Luke Donald, announced as European Ryder Cup captain again, obviously he was always going to be, but Nick and Mark both say he should remain captain for a little while yet, he's that impressive. Who will be the US captain? Nick and Mark give their preference, it's an obvious one.We discuss the LIV Clutch player of the year demonstrating his clutchability (it's a real word, look it up), and how it is a shame he won't play Ryder Cup. After the Turn, for Betr Nick lists the Top 5 rules that players take advantage of, the grey areas. For Southern Golf Club, plenty of feedback - this week focused on Marks criticism of the NZ Open's ProAm structure, and our bonus video ep on Huntingdale's redevelopment. Plus a bit of feedback on something from last weeks show from a English LIV player.Nick runs through all the results in the PING globals, and there are heaps! And we wrap with a masterclass from Mark, for the Golf Clearance Outlet, on how experimenting with your backswing length can give you greater distance control. A Talk Birdie Mini today where Nick and Mark consider an excellent question from wolfpacker Andrew, who has essentially asked if Tour Pros damage their game and their creativity through a continual search for the perfect swing. There are of course many examples over the years of players changing their swings and it working out beautifully and, in some cases, not working out.Nick and Mark feel is different for the men and women players at the moment and explain why, and they talk about the role flexibility plays and the Tour Pro who Mark says is a 'flexibility freak'. We discuss which players on tour have the highest performance looking swings at the moment, and who is a touch more home made. And we talk about Ian Baker-Finch and when he spoke to us recently about addressing his swing challenges during his career - Nick played with him a couple of weeks again and said that whilst Finchy is still working on his swing, he was hitting them beautifully! A fun little mini today, thanks Andrew for the question! We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. Great voicemail from wolfpacker Andrew in Perth about a recent experience on his local driving range, and how he has played a significant role* in a Tour Pro winning a tournament. Mike and Rico have a conversation about an absurd headline involving a DP World Tour Pro.
The dreaded 3 putt. You know the odds of it increases the further you get from the hole. How often, from 35 feet, will a Tour pro, a scratch golfer, and a 20 index take three putts to finish the hole? Lou poses this question to Mark and Greg, and two of their answers are off by shocking margins. This might help manage expectations, but it's also a wake-up call: here's an element of the game that investing a little practice could bring big benefits. Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap. If you saw or read about what happened to Calum Hill in Bahrain at the weekend, you'll no doubt have found it as difficult to watch as we did. He had a very tough weekend, completely lost his game and it didn't end well for the poor fella. We had a couple of messages from wolfpackers about it - Josh on email, and Gordon on voicemail - the thrust of the messaging was how do we prevent happening to us, what happened to Calum.Firstly Nick and Mark chat about the weekend in Bahrain for him, Mark didn't see a lot of it, Nick saw plenty and runs through the various scenarios that played out. In the end, it comes back to routine, and Nick and Mark explain why that is the case, and how you should look to construct yours to ensure what happened to Calum doesn't happen to you. Patrick Reed is a controversial player, has been for a long time. Tour Pro Scotty Laycock has an incident that he saw involving Patrick in 2021 at Torrey Pines that he says is the worst he ever saw. He explains what happened, and why he found it so galling in a voicemail for Nick and Mark. This week, Hal breaks down how he prepared for a new season. From practice to equipment, here how the 14 time PGA Tour winner got back into the swing of things
So in December Nick O'Hern made a comment about 'smelly opening holes', in other words those opening holes that you just feel uncomfortable on. So today, we thought we'd discuss a few notable ones - obviously it's, generally, unique to each person of course. However the #1 smelliest opening hole is one that both Nick and Mark are in vigorous agreement on - and that is The Lakes in Sydney. They explain why, and discuss a couple of difficult experiences there.Mark lists off a couple of other Australian courses with smelly opening holes, and one international. Nick lists a few international courses and one on Melbourne's sandbelt. One of Nick's, a US course, was not only about the opening hole but the entire course ! And one was a course where he played a US Open at, finishing 20th, with an opening hole he just did not enjoy. And it provides an opportunity for Nick to tell us the story about the one time in his pro career he was DQ'd, and another Tour Pro was (in part) to blame. With Greg out sunning himself again, Mark and Lou run the two-man Saturday Stat: Mark vs Lou's newsletter audience. In this episode: a Tour Pro is in the rough, a mere 15 yards from the hole. How often will his chip finish more than 10 feet from the hole? The announcer would suggest it should never happen, but it does—and probably more often than you'd expect. Happy New Year to you and yours, we hope the year is wonderful for you and you hit em well all year!We kick it off by seeing how the boys New Years Resolutions, if they make them, are going. Not well as it turns out.Onto the Mini though. Wolfpacker Shane has recently returned from a fantastic golfing trip to New Zealand where he was looked after (along with all the other players) beautifully, which inspired him to ask a question of Nick and Mark. When they were on the tour, what tournament, or course, looked after the pros the best and why?Mark names the tournament that, when he was playing professionally, was the worst. It has improved out of sight now, but back then, it wasn't great according to Mark. Nick names a couple that were always great to him, and others. And tells a story of one course which makes bespoke thickshakes for the Tour Pros, and recounts a story of two Pros having a thickshake competition to see who could consume the most in one sitting....!!!!Which leads to a conversation where Nick is asked to name the Tour Pro who had the worst diet. He names a Tour Pro who had pancakes for breakfast, Mexican for lunch, and KFC for dinner. Yet still managed to play pretty well!Mark names a tournament that he said made him feel very special and was always a lot of fun.And both Nick and Mark agree that Coolum was always a wonderful tournament with a great vibe. This is fun. Today we chat with the 1993 Singapore Open Champion and wolfpacker Paul Moloney who has a couple of great stories. He starts with a story about a one on one masterclass essentially that he had with Seve Ballesteros in Paris, and recounts what Seve was practising and aiming to do with his putting. Fascinating insights. And then a story about playing on Madeira Island with Gabriel Hjertstedt and some of the hairier moments in getting onto and off the island which has quite a unique climate, and airport.Mark recounts one of the two most amazing things he has ever seen in golf, once of which involved Gabriel. Nick talks about his experience playing on Madeira Island and why he has no desire to go back. And we finish with Mark giving Paul a belated (by 32-years) thank you for something significant in his career that came about due to Paul. After a question last week about golf pathways, we discovered that Acushnet (who operate Titleist and FootJoy) have 18 PGA Pros working for them in various roles around Australia and New Zealand, and we thought it worthwhile chatting to one about their path and how it came about. And Emma Larson is the perfect person to talk to. Emma works for Acushnet in the Melbourne office, made 11 Australian teams and was at one point ranked #1 in Australia - so she's got some serious chops! Emma drops in to talk to Nick and Mark about her story from gun amateur golfer (our words not hers), to being a Tour Pro, and then retiring on medical advice.Emma explains what happened next with her golf career and pathway, and how she initially considering coaching, and tells us why she gave that up....her reasons were not dissimilar to Nicks!A great chat today with Emma Larson from Acushnet, and she shows a great example of one of the many and varied career pathways that are available to PGA Professionals. What a weekend......The Australian Open was sensational, and we are going to spend the next hour reliving it.Mark is in Queensland with the family, Nick and Dan at Titleist and FootJoy HQ in Melbourne, so the show sounds a tad different today. Onto the AO. Nick and Mark loved it. The Australian Open is back, and it was an event that everyone involved, and golf fans broadly, should be very proud of. Mark says last years Open was a 2/10 rating, this years was an 8/10, and he has a Top 5 later in the show of things that could get it to a 10/10 in his view. The big one being the date, it is a challenging date with the South African event and the Bahamas event on at the weekend attracting a lot of big name players. That said, Mark says on TV those two looked second-rate compared to The Australian Open. Changing the date is a no-brainer says Mark.Nick notes that each of the 4 days had completely different weather which made the event challenging but exciting, and he loved the Sunday pin placements...he also said that he was 'sweating bullets' on friday when Rory was sailing a little close to the cutline. But that finish. In fact the 17th and 18th holes. Extraordinary. We analyse what happened, how Rasmus and Cam played the holes. The pressure was huge and Rasmus came out on top obviously.Nick talks about some of the older players who played, and he loved it. And some players who missed the cut who really shouldn't have. How about Min Woo Lee's Open, a tough sunday according ti Nick, and Mark says can you imagine if Adam Scott's putting was more consistent what might happen. Then, Mark makes a big call about the BMW Australian PGA Tournament saying it needs to be moved out of Queensland. He explains why.The BMW Touch of Class today is Richard Forsyth and his team at Royal Melbourne for the incredible job they did getting the course into the shape it was in, it looked magnificent and considering how it was only a few months ago, Mark says that they are well deserving of the Touch of Class award. Speaking of BMW, Nick bumped into his good mate Wolfgang, the former boss of BMW Australia, now in Germany, and a huge supporter of golf in Australia. The Top 5 for Betr....Marks Top 5 things to get The Australian Open to the next level, including a red hot crack at the commentary....which is a little awkward given Nick is one of the commentators. And for Hostplus, each week we look at what is a plus for golf - today, the running of the event by Golf Australia in how they handled a monster crowd over the week, the number of kids roaming around Royal Melbourne, and Mark adds a final one involving Nick O'Hern.PING Globals, well there was plenty of golf on aside from the Australian Open, and Nick runs us through all the results that matter. Next week on the show we'll have two particular results of interest, firstly the Cathedral Invitational, and secondly the Vic PGA Pro Am in which our mate Snowy from FootJoy is defending his title in, and our Talk Birdie Wolfpacker Darren from Toowoomba will be playing in. Can't wait! For Southern Golf Club, feedback this week is all about The Australian Open, and we have a voicemail from Michael in Hobart who has a question about the AO and a Tour Pro who he says 'made a dick move', and wants Nick and Marks thoughts. After last weeks masterclass, for watchMynumbers, from Mark was branded the 'laziest masterclass we've done', Nick says he is doing a lazy one - although it turns out to be excellent. Nick talks about handling pressure at key points, Ala Cam and Rasmus. Huge pod today, for a number of reasons. Firstly we welcome Hostplus as a major partner, Hostplus have been a huge supporter of golf for a number of years, and we're excited to be partnering with them at Talk Birdie To Me.Secondly we have a very special guest on the masterclass with Nick O'Hern today, he has a legend of Australian golf giving a putting masterclass later in the show. You don't want to miss it.But the drama....the stories....the emotions...of the final US Tour Event and those players on the bubble. It was a rollercoaster over the weekend. Nick and Mark watched plenty of it and discuss today, and we have a listen to one Tour Pro who has lost his card as of the weekend. It's a difficult listen as the emotions run over. And in exciting news, the idea Nick and Mark floated a few months ago of a show focused on the cutline actually eventuated! With the PGA cutline show starting last week. Only one downside, they didn't take our suggestion of getting Monday Q's Ryan French to host it....but maybe that will come. The shortened cutline is hugely significant to players, and we chat about that.A number of movements in and out of LIV this past week, which we look over, including the Laurie Canter story. The Australian PGA in Brisbane this week, later in the week we'll have a chat to Golf Australia boss Gavin Kirkman who is at the event and get the inside word on it, and we're giving some thought to a Betr multi to sort....that will be in the next 24-hours....we'll try and rinse Hummer at Betr. Nick and Mark are excited for the tournament, Mark is pumped about the number of DPWT and LIV players who've travelled, it will be a ripper weekend. Can Elvis Smylie defend the title?Nick and Mark discuss Metropolitan in Melbourne and how the course is settling in - Nick has many fond memories of Metro, and one bad one....which he explains. For BMW Mark's turn for a Touch of Class this week, after being briefly hijacked by Dan, and Mark has an unusual recipient of the Touch of Class award. After the turn we toy around with a new segment we've loosely called 'Good for Golf', which is essentially something that has happened, or should happen, which would be a 'plus' for golf. Hostplus are good for golf, and have supported the sport for years, so it's a natural fit. Mark has a great suggestion.Ping Globals from Nick, it might be getting to the end of the year, but gosh there's been some great golf played. And the Betr Top 5 from Mark is his Top 5 fave Queensland golfers who never won a major. Nick tells a hilarious story about Ossie Moore during Marks Top 5.For Southern Golf Club, plenty of feedback - iron covers (again), Aaron Rai (again), Tech in golf, broomstick putters, some feedback on last weeks course record with GUR, and we touch on the 'Dixon' incident on last weeks podcast.....And then, for watchMynumbers, Nick O'Hern's masterclass. Today it is on putting, and he has enlisted the master - Ian Baker-Finch - to give us a masterclass on putting. It's great to listen to, and you should also watch the video on YouTube here. Todays pod starts with a discussion about Aaron Rai, clearly an excellent player, and a big win at the weekend in Abu Dhabi for him - however Mark tells Nick that Aaron 'makes me laugh', and he explains why. One of the reasons is wearing two gloves, and Nick explains why he does. That said, a fantastic win at the weekend by Aaron, at a course Mark describes as a 'fake links course', and he has a theory on what any 'fake links course' needs to do in order to improve the look of the course. He compares the Yas Links course and how it looks to how Tara Iti and 7 Mile Beach look. We discuss the tournament and the 'brutality' of the course, and look at some of the stats from a number of players. Plenty of great performances.Mark brings up the World Wide Technology Championship, and in particular one Tour Pro who made the cut and had a shocker on one of the Par 4 holes shooting 12. Ouch.Tour Pro Ian Poulter spoke with Rick Shiels this week and listed his Top 6 golf courses in the world, there was one he listed that made Nick and Mark laugh, with their view being it should not be on any Top 6 list....but they have a theory as to why Ian put it there, which we investigate. Mark tells a couple of stories about escorting Ian around the hospitality tents when he was in the country for the Australian Masters and talks about how Ian was to deal with. For BMW our Touch of Class is Ludvig Åberg, the vision is spectacular and you'll see it on our YouTube show, but Nick and Mark talk through it and explain why it is so good.Inspired by Aaron Rai, Mark's Top 5 today for Betr is the Top 5 (or is it Top 20?) things that Pro Golfers laugh at Amateurs for doing.Plenty of results for Nick to run through in the PING globals today, and one result next week which will no doubt get a run - is Marks performance in the mighty Box Hill Pro Am this week....he is forecasting a 64 so we'll watch with interest.Heaps of feedback on our Gary Player mini, we read out a couple. Plenty of comments on the discussion around technology in golf and how to address the flow on effects, and a couple of comments and our poll result on the LIV changes from last week. And todays masterclass for watchMynumbers from Nick is inspired by Moe Norman, and what Nick has taken from Moe and is incorporating into his game. Well it might be a quiet time for tournaments, but goodness there is plenty of golf news to discuss this week! But first today, a reminder of our Victoria Pro-Am comp. We're looking for one wolfpacker to be our official player in the Vic Pro-Am in December, send us a pic or video of you rocking a pair of FootJoys, your handicap, where you play, and all eligible entrants (ie: who have a handicap and aren't a pro) will be in the draw next week on the show. If you're in Melbourne great. If you're interstate, regional Vic, or New Zealand, we'll sort your travel and accomodation. Entries close COB Monday November 10th. We discussed the huge LIV changes on yesterday's bonus pod, if you've not heard it, it's in the feed and worth checking out. Nick and Mark discuss what LIV's move might mean, and explore some of the questions that arise now about how they'll do it. Given the magnitude of the move, there is more to discuss, so we chat LIV today. The Old Course at St Andrews is undergoing some changes in preparation for the 2027 Open Championship, in part to address golf's length issue. Nick has a firm view on how to address this, and he doesn't believe extending courses is the way to go. Mark has some thoughts as well. We run through the Old Course changes, and discuss whether they'll make a difference, or are relatively minor.Marks Touch of Class for BMW is on a young 20-something player he saw at the weekend who played beautifully....he explains the context and reasoning. Nick raises Lee Trevino's comments about the Top 3 players in the world, following Gary Players thoughts. And the WPGA schedule has been released for 2027, it looks good. Nick talks us through it.Top 5 for Betr, in light of the St Andrews changes, Nick lists his Top 5 holes that have been lengthened - for better or worse. Mainly for better. In fact all for better. Slightly misnamed Top 5.The mighty Southern Golf Club bring us feedback, and we start with a whack for Mark over comments he made on last week's podcast. Into a number of various 'yip-centric' comments following our yip-heavy pod last week. Also, a number of comments on Nick O'Who's performance in the Titleist simulator last week. Mostly positive, with one piece of constructive criticism. And some feedback from Tour Pro and legend Bradley Hughes on the drivers.PING Globals, Nick takes us around all the results from the last week. Mark has a crack at the music in the opener. Some things never change. He invites wolfpackers to suggest a new opener. Don't listen to him.Into the masterclass for watchMynumbers, Mark played at the weekend and in his words 'played bad', he had an issue with his swing, but he reckons he may have solved it. He explains the problem, and what he did to address it.If you haven't heard our LIV bonus pod from yesterday, it's in the feed here and on YouTube here. A feedback pod today and we start by looking at a tweet from golf stats guy Lou Stagner that a wolfpacker sent in, both Nick and Mark enjoy Lou's insights usually, but this time he has made a comment that they both vehemently disagree with regarding the St Andrews Old Course. We discuss the Old Course and why it is special. Mark brings up the 1984 Open Championship, famous for Seve, but tells the story of what happened to Ian Baker-Finch on the last shot of the day as a result of the sprinkler the night before. Speaking of IBF, Paul has written in with a suggestion for Australian golf coverage. Ken replies to wolfpacker Martins comments last weeks about The Players being a possible major, and Ken pretty much gives everyone a whack - Nick, Mark, Golf Australia. Ross has a question about Tour Pro's moving back to amateur status, and Nick and Mark talk through why they would never do it.A question from lefty Matt on his concerns about being fitted for new clubs.David reckons Nick and Mark are being too kind to LIV Golf and believes it is a failure. We discuss some of the players currently re-signing with LIV.Scott has an idea regarding the Australian Masters, and it reminds us that we've not reviewed Royal Sydney yet - if you've played it, we'd love your thoughts. And we finish on a comment from Paul about returning to golf after some tideway, and the difference hybrids have made for him. Big pod today, we start by discussing the great win by the Australian Women in the International Crown in South Korea. Sensational! A wonderful performance.Speaking of fantastic womens golf, Nick was excited to see Yani Tseng back in the winners circle, and what a finish it was. It's been a long time, great to see her back.Mark has a history of, from time to time, teeing off on local councils. And today he has a bee in his bonnet about a local council and what they have done to a suburban Melbourne golf course. Then, we talk yips. Risky territory we realise that. But we chat about the yips, how they occur, how to fix them, and hear some hilarious stories on the way. Mark talks about being a tad yippy at one point and how he fixed it, Nick explains why he moved to putting right-handed and what he had to learn to do, and Mark tells us what he calls 'the greatest yipping story ever'. A bold claim, but to be fair, it's a pretty funny story. Mark raises Peter 'Pom' O'Malley and his flirtation with a bit of yip activity, and wants to confirm whether his memory is correct so he texts Shags, Poms caddy, to ask him for clarification.A fantastic Touch of Class for BMW today featuring Michael Brennan, who won his first PGA tour event at the weekend, however the Touch of Class is not about his performance as such, but something else related. After the turn we launch a massive opportunity for one wolfpacker. We have a spot in the Victorian PGA event coming up in early December to give to one Talk Birdie listener! It's a Pro AM, so you'll be partnered with a Tour Pro and in the same group as last years winner Tim Snow (of FootJoy). To have a shot - send us a pic of you rocking a pair of FootJoy's, your handicap (you need one to play), where you play your golf, and a video of your swing would be fun to see as well. We'll pick 10 finalists, and randomly draw one on the pod in a couple of weeks. If you're in Melbourne you're sorted. If you're interstate, regional or international, we'll fly you to Melbourne and put you up for the time you're here. Send your entry to us either via socials, our website or email it here.Top 5 for Betr is on, what else, the Top 5 'yippers' of all time. Yikes.Nick runs us around the world in what really was quite a massive weekend of golf in the PING Global results.Been a long show today, so a shorter version of feedback for Southern Golf Club - we always love to hear from wolfpackers, keep it coming. And we wrap with a masterclass from Nick, for watchMynumbers, inspired by Yani Tseng on putting the opposite way.
