On this episode of the Banned Biographies podcast your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, lets you know what's been going on since the last TWO episodes and what you can expect from the next one. Firstly, I'd like to thank Zach Blair again very much for giving up some of his precious time to talk to me at the end of last year, it was so nice to meet him and find out he was just a regular, nice dude who enjoys chatting music. But, I released a sneaky extra episode this month, didn't I? I'd been wanting to talk to Laurie Black since I saw her support Adam Ant at the end of last Summer. Thanks to photographer Max Caine we reconnected and recorded that great conversation you heard a couple of weeks ago. Australian listeners, you still have time to get yourselves to a show at the Adelaide and Melbourne fringe festivals to go and see what she's all about. I urge you to go and see her, you won't be disappointed. It's been a really great month for interaction and I'm really glad you all feel passionate enough about music and have been encouraged to get in touch with me. I love a good natter about music, so please do stay in touch and, if you've not got in touch via social media or email then please do, and do go and leave me a five star rating and more importantly a review on Apple Podcasts. News this month concerns Terry Hall, Vivienne Westwood, The Punk Rock Museum, Steve Ignorant, Public Image Limited representing Ireland at Eurovision, Billy Idol, The Damned, The Real McKenzies, NOFX, Sleaford Mods, Danzig, Fall Out Boy, Bouncing Souls, Pantera being removed from European shows, Flogging Molly, The Meffs, Tom Verlaine, Pussy Riot, Siouxsie Sioux, Ozzy Osbourne and more. Welcome to this very special interview episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast where your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, talks to Zach Blair, the lead guitarist of Rise Against. I met Zach on the ferry back from both our European tours in November and he was such a gentleman. He gave me a lot of time and asked about the tour, about my podcast and told me about his own brilliant podcast, Anti-Heroes with Zach Blair, upon which he talks with other guitarists that he admires about their guitars, set ups and equipment. He also told me about the other bands he's played in including Hagfish, Armstrong, Only Crime, and GWAR, some of which he talks about on this episode. Zach is such a great guy and so full of stories, as you would expect from someone who has been doing this for as long as he has. I'm so thankful to him for talking to me, even though this is a shorter than usual episode due to how busy Zach is. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I had having it. If you have any additional questions after listening that I didn't have time to ask him, perhaps I'll be able to entice him back on in future and put them to him. Until then, if you want more Zach chat, go and subscribe to his podcast, and let him know I sent you, so he knows you heard him on here and he knows this is a good place for him to come back. Also fun fact--Eva's brother plays drums in her band, her husband plays bass and her MOM SINGS BACKING VOCALS!!! What?!?? Isn't that insane?!!! It's a true family band and I AM HERE FOR IT!! We talk about being from Seattle and the overwhelming influence of Hendrix on a guitar player from there (even influencing her guitar choice), navigating being female and black in a rock guitar band and we also discuss her record, “Cobain and Cornbread” (genius title) and the Sub Pop single The End of Everything. Thanks to Dunlop for their episode support!DON'T MISS THIS EPISODE!!!Explore more music podcasts at Ruinous Media.Find us on Instagram

Zach Blair of Rise Against joined us for this one. We went over so much during this interview! Blair is someone who is always focusing on music in some capacity. Whether it's his podcast, seeing his brother Doni's band (Toadies) on the road, or playing in his band - he's always moving. His podcast, Anti-Hereos, started this year. In some ways, his father served as a hidden inspiration for his current podcast. His father's all night request hour was his own corner of the show biz. Now, Zach is behind the mic for his podcast. Zach wanted to be involved in music from day one. He knew from the start that he was going to play music or die trying. It would one day become his main source of income. We discussed the music scene with a full conversation about the evolution of punk and how touring has changed from the days when he had to use payphones and road maps to get around. Additionally, we reviewed the term "sellout," and discussed Dan Ozzi's hit book since Rise Against had a chapter in it. Last year Blair had a full circle moment when Rise Against went on tour with the Descendents. To this day they are one of his favorite bands and a big influence for his first band, Hagfish. His journey in music has been filled with countless connections. One that eventually led to meeting the members of Rise Against, clicking with them, and joining the band.

Joining us this week is Zach Blair, lead guitarist in the legendary punk band Rise Against. For anyone that grew up in Chicago in the early 2000s and was at all interested in rock music, Rise Against was a touchstone. We use the group's recent EP Nowhere Sessions as a lens into the tradition of punk rock covers of protest songs and their live resonance. We also touch on the crucial role that metal music played in shaping Zach as a guitarist, his time as a member and writer in Gwar, and how Rise Against's success is a vehicle for its activism. We also hear a few tunes from the newest live Rise Against EP, Nowhere Sessions (Loma Vista Recordings). And bonus! Guitarists Tim McIlrath and Zach Blair enjoy tenacious tones with rock's mightiest tag team—Gibsons into Marshalls—aided by a few everyman effects and one mythical stomp. Rise Against rose out of Chicago around Y2k on the back of roaring Gatling-gun guitars, blast-beat rhythms, and defiant, sharp-tongued social commentary. The band's first pair of albums—2001's The Unraveling and 2003's Revolutions Per Minute—are blistering bangers rooted in traditional hardcore chaos, spiced up with fist-pumping, boot-stomping choruses. Siren Song of the Counter Culture in 2004 was their major-label debut, on Geffen. That album highlighted a broadening hardcore sound buffed up with more melody. (Think '90s Bad Religion messaging cloaked in early 2000s AFI harmonies.) However catchy they became, their message still ripped like a dagger. Appealing to a bigger audience with bouncier hooks, acoustic numbers, and string overdubs earned them their first splash into the Billboard 200 albums chart (eventually certified gold in the U.S.). Elevated visibility scored them back-to-back platinum albums—2006's The Sufferer & the Witness and 2008's Appeal to Reason, and that momentum carried over to a continued residency in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 with 2011's Endgame, 2014's The Black Market, and 2017's Wolves. And 2021's Nowhere Generation represents a maturing, melodic hardcore outfit that continues to stand up for what they believe in and still provide the revolutionary attitude to back it up. The continual growth and evolution of their melodic-hardcore formula has allowed them to roll into mainstream airwaves like a Trojan horse. Newcomers who were enamored with anthemic choruses ("Savior," "The Prayer of the Refugee," "Nowhere Generation," "Give It All," "I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore") quickly became dancing disciples because of the band's knack for earworms. The twin-guitar team of singer Tim McIlrath and lead guitarist Zach Blair welcomed PG down to Birmingham, Alabama's Avondale Brewing Company to see how their simple-but-stinging https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-rise-against (setups have morphed since 2015). How could we do a Rise Against Week without having sometime co/host & all-time friend of the show, ZACH BLAIR on to do a wrap up?!?Don't miss Zach & Mike Wiebe's great new podcast "Zach And Mike Make 3"!!!!
On this one, we're starting to make the first move and get to know Zach and Mike a little better as Mike asks Zach what his current three favorite things are. Zach bullshits Mike for an hour and tells him what he wants to hear. Zach and Mike fuck with each other and get way off-topic. Listen in as our heroes avoid a damn near shitshow fistfight, mixed with pop culture. They also talk a ton of nerdy shit. (We also call this one "The Three Things Podcast" throughout...It's confusing) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Every week Zach Blair and Mike Wiebe (in the band Drakulas together and Rise Against and Riverboat Gamblers respectively) talk with a guest or amongst themselves about three things they are into. Three of anything. It might be three movies. It might be three albums. It might be two albums and one movie. It might be one book, one food, and one activity. We could keep explaining various combinations but if you have read this far you are a smart individual who can follow along with simple concepts. Get to know some of your favorite (or soon to be favorite) musicians, comedians, and artists as they talk about what they are into while Zach and Mike make fun of themselves. These days, Zach Blair can be heard playing lead guitar in the world-renowned punk outfit Rise Against as well as Drakulas, his excellent side project. Before he was part of those bands, the guitarist was sporting formal wear as a member of Hagfish, touring overseas with a punk supergroup called Only Crime and wearing 60 pounds of prosthetics to play the part of "Flattus Maximus" in GWAR. And prior to any of that, Blair was just a kid in Sherman, Texas, who was listening to his dad's record collection and learning to play guitar. Recently, My First Band host Tyler Maas got a chance to hear some amazing stories from Blair's 30-plus-years in music. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, they spoke about the guitarist's lengthy tenure in Hagfish with his brother Doni, the unexpected circumstances that led to him joining GWAR (and the tragedy that brought him back to the band for a short time), memorable stints in Armstrong and Only Crime, and how he wound up joining Rise Against. Along the way, Blair also talked about ways he's keeping busy during a rare span of time in which he's not touring, all the amazing experiences he's been able to have with Rise Against and Drakulas' great new record entitled Terminal Amusements. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Drakulas ("Dark Black").

On this Zach Blair Interview, Zach talks about a history of the highs & lows of the bands he’s been involved with, and how he wound up connecting with Rise Against. One of the cleanest players around, Zach talks about his commitment to excellence, and his desire to keep growing as a player… His secret blues lead addiction, righteous indignation, therapy, Australia, being more patient & compassionate, and why always following his heart made his life much easier, in spite of having some dark times. AWESOME convo with an incredibly skilled player and just a lovely, sincere guy Zach Blair’s the lead guitarist for Rise Against. Before joining Rise Against in 2007, he played with Only Crime along with his brother, Doni Blair, who currently plays with the Toadies. The Blair brothers were founding members of the bands Hagfish & Armstrong. Zach was also a member of Gwar (as Flattus & Splattus Maximus) and has played with The Loved Ones, The Mag Sevens... and is a member of The Drakulas, and has released 2 LPs & an EP with them Support this Show: http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support Subscribe https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EveryoneLovesGuitar/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everyonelovesguitar/
Before guitarist Zach Blair joined Rise Against in 2007, he and his brother Doni started the melodic punk rock giants Hagfish, and later went on to write songs for and tour with GWAR, among others. Zach talks about growing up in Texas, his dads influence on his career path, his brothers protectiveness, how his life changed by joining one of the biggest bands in the U.S., and how music has been his only drug his entire life and credits that with his success.
Toadies bassist Donivan Blair waxes about growing up with his guitarist brother Zach Blair of Rise Against and their time as founding members of Hagfish, about taking up Taekwondo as a middle aged man, about writing a debut memoir about such endeavors, and the mystical divide between the fans who see rockers on a pedestal and the rockers who work real jobs when they get down off their pedestals.
Forged in the Chicago punk scene of the late ‘90s, Rise Against seemed an unlikely candidate for mainstream success. After signing to a major label in 2003, Rise Against went on to release six albums that reached the Billboard 200 — five of which charted in the top ten. In this episode we speak with vocalist/guitarist Tim McIlrath and guitarist Zach Blair about sheltering in place, being political, following your passion, Zach’s tenure in the band Gwar, and much more.

In this episode, guitarist Zach Blair (Rise Against, Gwar, Only Crime, Hagfish, Drakulas) tells Mike and Orville about how he came to join the traveling metal circus that is GWAR, one of the most elaborate and impressive DIY bands of all time. GWAR is mayhem, and Zach tells a few stories about how the commitment of the characters almost drove him off the edge. The episode opens with the guys eating copious amounts of toffee.

Why can’t you say you talked to nerds? You’re already thinking of someone else. This week on the show Chris and Damian talk about the journey of friendship that Zach Blair and MVP took us on. They also review their respective weekend of shows and tackle the mailbag with a vengeance!
THIS IS THE BEST EPISODE YET! Zach Blair is the internationally famous guitarist of Rise Against who grew up in a small town in Texas. MVP is an international wrestling superstar that has been at the top of the card for almost every major wrestling company in the world. When they were teenagers the two would have a chance meeting one night in a local park and in spite of their differences, connect over a mutual love of punk while MVP was in Texas trying to escape the violence that surrounded him back home. The two would have a major impact on each others lives, but over time lost touch. Now for the first time in 20 years the two reconnect to talk about meeting, the shared love of punk, why MVP disappeared one night and having to calm down the Macho Man. Also touched on: Thesis of the whole show summed up in a episode Damian Abraham: punk matchmaker Zach growing up metal in Sherman Texas Zach and three outcast metalheads hanging out in the park “Cosmic, on multiple levels.” MVP getting out of Miami to get away from the violence MVP tagging up the park bonded together by a love of metal and punk A gangbanger becomes the muscle for the outcast metalheads: “NOW WE CAN DEFEND OURSELVES” Getting in fights with the normals The Burnouts VS. The Skatekids MVP’s long term memory is INSANE Teenage MVP vs The Rodeo Rider: Champion VS Champion Zach and Donny learning to stand up for themselves MVP sings the Toadies Metalheads in the garage “Don’t you say a word against Priest, Jack!” MVP has to leave town quick!: One HELL of a night! There is life outside of this town! Zach plays MVP Voivod The Jam at the Dam The skinny bald white guy in a “Badass” shirt walks into a bar. Macho Man shows up at a Gwar/Misfits shows The Punk/Wrestling Connection! Dave Brockie Stories Fishbone AND SO MUCH MORE!!!!!
