Almost everyone even vageuely aware of autism or neurodiversity in general has heard the term "Aspergers" banded about. But were they? This week, Simon delivers a short insight into the life and times of Hans Asperger. Is it as dark as some people believe or was he saving lives? Some of the many (many) resources used in preparation - and for further reading I can recommend:"Asperger's Children: The Origins of Autism in Nazi Vienna" By Edith Sheffer"Hans Asperger, National Socialism, and “race hygiene” in Nazi-era Vienna" by Herwig Czech" In a Different Key: The Story of Autism" by John Donvan and Caren Zucker"The aftermath of the Hans Asperger exposé" (BPS) by Rabbi David Ariel Sher"Non-complicit: Revisiting Hans Asperger's Career in Nazi-era Vienna" by Dean Falk"Response to ‘Non-complicit: Revisiting Hans Asperger's Career in Nazi-era Vienna'" by Herwig Czech"Did Hans Asperger actively assist the Nazi euthanasia program?" by Simon Baron-Cohen, Ami Klin, Steve Silberman and Joseph D. BuxbaumWe are aware of some controversy around the research into Asperger, indeed I include one of the louder critics in Dean Falk above, but in preparation for this episode I ran the notes and papers past four research scientists, a University Ph.D supervisor and our usual show expert colleagues. We can have a debate about the rights and wrong of the methodology, the implicit ideologies and direction of thinking. I think the response by Silberman is interesting: updated his book and took part in a discussion with an autistic writer and campaigner (Maxfield Sparrow). https://thinkingautismguide.com/2018/04/on-hans-asperger-nazis-and-autism.html This was a hard episode to do. Significant research, personal connections and delving through records of murdered children, the language of the era used about "disabled" people. I am sure some will be offended, some will be upset. I have tried to be as balanced as I can but I know it will never be right. As an autistic person this is as much my discussion as anyone else's and I think we should air on the side of what feels right and stop using that mans name. Talk instead of Lorna Wing or George Frankl. As ever we thank you, our loyal listeners for sticking with us. We would love to hear from you and our Twitter is open @AtypicalThePod for messages and comments. Have a topic you would like us to cover, or do you fancy joining us for a natter, maybe tell us about your area of interest or expertise and share these things with everyone. We would also recommend our friend The Autistic Women for another great view on living with autism and our friends at the All Bets are Off podcast who cover addiction.

“In A Different Key: The Story of Autism” is a book that was more than seven years in the making, and since its publication this year, it has advanced the discussion about autism in the public and medical worlds. In our November Narrative Medicine Rounds, Emmy Award–winning correspondent John Donvan and Peabody Award–winning television news producer Caren Zucker will talk about the book, a narrative that offers new insight into the seminal moments of the past near-century: the rise of the disability rights movement, deinstitutionalization, the effort to mainstream those on the spectrum, breakthroughs in neuroscience and our understanding of the mind, and the birth of the neurodiversity movement. Donvan and Zucker, whose own families have been affected by autism, have been on the front lines of reporting on the social, medical, and legal aspects of autism since 1999, even before it became a national topic of conversation. Their groundbreaking ABC News series, Echoes of Autism, launched in the early 2000s as network television’s first regular autism beat. Caren Zucker is an award-winning veteran television news producer who has worked most extensively with ABC News. In addition to her experience in breaking news and live broadcast, she produced and co-wrote a six-part series on autism for PBS in 2011. In 2010, John and Caren co-wrote a piece for Atlantic magazine, "Autism's First Child", which was a finalist for the National Magazine Award. John Donvan is a multiple Emmy Award-winning Nightline correspondent with a long career in journalism. Prior to serving as a regular correspondent to Nightline, he was the Chief White House Correspondent for ABC News. He is the moderator for Intelligence Squared US debates, heard on NPR stations, and has also performed on stage, starring in his truth-based One Man Show, Lose the Kid.
News correspondent for ABC News’ “Nightline” John Donvan is most known for his war reporting. He has built a reputation throughout his television career reporting from places such as Jerusalem, Europe, the Middle East and Africa since 1982. He has contributed to news outlets including ABC Radio, ABC television, CNN and ABC News’ magazine programs, “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America.” He has been awarded two Emmys, several Overseas Press Club Awards, two Cine Golden Eagles, been honored by the National Association of Black Journalists and the Committee of 100 and the Media Action Network for Asian-Americans. Emmy-nominated journalist and ABC television producer Caren Zucker is known for her coverage of 9/11, presidential campaigns, social trends and the Olympic games – but she changed the direction of her reporting when her oldest son was diagnosed with autism. She now works alongside Donvan to inform audiences and give them a better understanding of the realities of autism. As a team, Donvan and Zucker have been collaborating on autism stories since 2000. They created the ABC series “Echoes of Autism,” and Zucker produced the series “Autism Now” for PBS NewsHour.
John Donvan is a contributing correspondent to ABC News, where, in a three decade long career, his postings have included Chief White House Correspondent, Chief Moscow Correspondent, Amman Bureau Chief, Jerusalem Correspondent, London Correspondent, Eastern Europe Correspondent, and, most recently, a regular correspondent for Nightline. He is also host/moderator of the Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates. Caren Zucker is a 25-year veteran of ABC News and producer, best known for her work on World News Tonight and Nightline, and as co-writer of the PBS series Autism Now. John and Caren's new book is In a Different Key: The Story of Autism. They are in the Northwest to speak at Town Hall Seattle tomorrow night, presented by Town Hall, University Book Store, and UW Autism Center, as part of the Science series.
