Rachel Morrison and Barry Jenkins come together beautifully here to craft a big screen polished adaptation of the 2016 PBS Documentary, "T-Rex: Her Fight For gold". The chemistry between Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry portraying Claressa Shields and Coach Jason Crutchfield is so palpable. A lot of heart and care went into this project. So, while it may feel like the film doesn't tell enough of Claressa's story, which continued far beyond her Olympic years, the gritty biographical story of a naturally gifted boxing phenom we do get here is unapologetically as inspirational as the real life boxing champion herself. As we approach the eve of the August 10, 1990, Arab League Summit; I thought this a good time for us to go back, with the help of the PBS Documentary series "Frontline", to the summer of circumstances that led to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. So, we will relive the summer months prior to the invasion as we listen to the "Frontline: The Gulf War" Documentary sum up the issues between Iraq and Kuwait that escalated into the invasion. How Saddam Hussein mislead Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, who in turn assured President Bush that an invasion was not imminent. Then we will listen in on a Documentary on Former Secretary of State James Baker, as he describes going to the Soviet Union and bringing them into the coalition which in a lot of ways marked the true end of the Cold War. All of this while tensions mount and the world moves closer to war, and the United States starts negotiating with King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, to move more than 200,000 United States Military troops to the Persian Gulf to insure that Iraq will not make moves toward any other neighbors in the region. Then we will go to the coverage of the Arab League Summit where the Arab Nations stand with the United States against the aggression of Saddam Hussein against Kuwait. It is a united Arab League, with just a couple of hold outs. We want to recognize "The Gulf War by Frontline" a documentary on the war, we used a long segment for this podcast to go through how the war started, and we recognize "James Baker President-Maker Real Stories " Documentary for the use of the long segment from their documentary as well. Links to both documentaries are provided in the chapters. I'll never forget the first time I caught Roy Wood Jr. on stage in LA; his electrifying presence had the crowd in stitches. Now, I'm beyond thrilled to bring that same infectious energy directly to your ears as Roy joins me to peel back the curtains on a career that's had us laughing all the way from comedy clubs to The Daily Show. Sit back and absorb the anecdotes of our shared history, from the heartfelt care package he sent during my deployment to his unforgettable stint at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Roy's narrative isn't just a series of punchlines – it's a masterclass in the resilience and connection that defines the comedy landscape.Cleveland's notorious weather, it turns out, may just be the secret ingredient to appreciating a good joke. In a conversation that meanders through preferred climates and memorable locations, Roy and I find common ground in the oddest of places. From LeBron James' effect on the city's morale to musing over who'd play us in a biopic – Keenan Thompson and Idris Elba, if you're listening, we've got some ideas – we tackle it all. Our banter extends beyond stages and screens, touching on the passions that color our lives offstage, and yes, that includes a shared love for video games and baseball cards.Wrapping this episode is a bit bittersweet, like ending a great night out with an old friend. Roy's candid reflection on bombing at the Apollo Theater is a poignant reminder that our missteps often shape our success stories. This chat isn't just about the laughs we've shared; it's a heart-to-heart on the lessons learned in and out of the spotlight. So, as I extend my gratitude to you, the listeners, for joining us on this journey, remember to stay tuned for more stories and insights that continue to ignite the torch of humor and humanity.Connect with Passing The Torch: Facebook and IG: @torchmartin If you enjoyed this podcast, check these out episodes Purple Heart Recipient Helping People Take Control of their lives & Hack Success with CIA Intelligence Officer, Decorated Military Combat Veteran and Fortune 10 Corporate Advisor Navy Seal Commander turned mindfulness and meditation teacher

Randall Balmer is a scholar, professor, author, documentarian (Emmy nominee), and Episcopalian Priest. Ken and Dr. Balmer talk about his new book, Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right. They discuss notable players in the movement like Senator Mark Hatfield, Harold O.J. Brown, W.A. Criswell, Paul Weyrich, Ralph Reed, and Richard Land. In the right's celebration of Ronald Reagan, the religious right movement did not, as many believe, begin as pro-Life but rather defending evangelical institutions against the IRS which required compliance with the Civil Rights law. The genesis of the Religious Right had nothing to do with abortion - it was racial segregation. The bridge to understanding the election of Donald Trump is Ronald Raegan - as evangelicals abandoned Jimmy Carter. Ronald Reagan launched his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi at the Neshoba County Fair, confirming "State's Rights." The church basement classic, Thief in the Night. was inspired by Dr. Balmer's pastor father's sermon series on Revelation preached in his home church in Iowa in 1974. It's the story of The Rapture and Larry Norman's popular song "I wish we'd all been ready." College and graduate school introduced Dr. Balmer to the life of the mind. They remember Billy Graham's crisis of faith. In 1994, Dr. Balmer's book 1989 Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory became a PBS Documentary and featured Tony Campolo, Dolphus Weary, Fred Price, Bill Hybels, the black church in Mississippi, Hispanic Pentecostals, Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and many others. Today, in addition to his academic profession, Dr. Balmer is an Episcopalian priest - he shares the journey that led him to his ordination in the church. Today we are talking about the phenomenon that is the human soul and I'd like to begin with an observation. As a species, we humans aren't so good at dealing with things we cannot touch or measure, are we? I found a list on Listverse of the top ten images of invisible things. I'm struck with how many of them weren't visible until technology caught up to the point we were able to capture these once thought invisible phenomenon. How is the soul any different? Chances are if you're a listener, I'm preaching to the choir. But we are witnessing a time when doctors and scientists are becoming comfortable with the unseen, largely agreeing that the human conscience is real and that we are only now finding ways to document and study it further. This episode will cover the inception of naming a soul, the search to define the soul, the science behind proving a soul exists, the dark night of the soul, and more! After a six-week hiatus, we're back and with a fast-paced adventure story that rivals even the best of Hollywood. It's the story of Hannibal Barca. When outnumbered by the Roman military two to one, this fearless Carthaginian general, complete with eye patch and riding atop a black stallion, defied all odds in one of the bloodiest battles in all of antiquity, thus becoming one of the greatest military commanders the world has ever known. Join us as we delve into the life and times of this extraordinary man. Episode Notes:The immediate predecessor of Hannibal in Spain was his brother-in-law, Hasdrubal the Fair (not to be confused with Hannibal's brother, Hasdrubal), who ruled from 229-221 BC., after which Hannibal in 221 at the age of 26 took over Carthaginian Spain.According to some ancient sources, Hannibal did marry an Iberian woman named Imilce and they had a son, but we do not know this for certain. It is one of the things that traditionally we are uncomfortable talking about – mental health. It scares some, misunderstood by many more, but it is ever present. You may be surprised to know just how much it effects our younger generation. According to reports, 75% of mental illness symptoms have onset before age 25, and 50% have onset before age 14. But what are we doing to better understand it, and to help those dealing with it ? Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness, presented by Ken Burns, demonstrates the awareness of mental health across all spectrums of the population and how it has been growing after years living in the pandemic. The film specifically focuses on the particular concerns about the youngest generations. Today, that's our focus, as we talk with mental health experts, the filmmakers of the series, and address callers who share their personal stories with us. The film's already been a hit at several major film festivals. The doc follows the rare creation of a fresco mural painting, that's inside the sanctuary of a small church in Asheville, North Carolina church. Normally, frescoes have been done in history—such as the Sistine Chapel, The Last Supper…But in this film, the artist has created a fresco mural not of the rich and powerful people, but of people battling homelessness, addiction, and mental illness. https://theirsisthekingdomfilm.com/
Modern Motherhood Misunderstanding #1: "In order to be a good mom, you must put yourself last." My message to the moms out there spending their precious energy on everyone but themselves … you don't have to put yourself last to be a good mom. In fact, everyone will do better once you start prioritizing yourself. It's time to start the personal revolution of stopping the madness and starting to take care of yourself really, really well. Not from a place of selfishness, but from the realization that you're a crucial part of the family and when you're not doing well, everyone suffers. So let's make sure you're doing well! Beating yourself down into an exhausted, unhappy, unfulfilled presence in the home isn't helping anyone. It's not helping you, that's clear … but it's also not helping your partner or your kids. Nobody is winning. Fulfilling YOUR needs first strengthens you and IS the way to, big picture, be there for your kids. And so, to get to the result of being the best mom possible – your action step is for you – the mom – to create the best life possible for yourself thereby being in a better position to teach, guide, and coach the other people in your home how to do the same for themselves.
