Life during the Revolutionary War was more than military strategy; there were plenty of battles to be fought at home. Betsy Ambler was a young teenager during the turbulent years, and through her records and letters, we can see the conflict though a perspective that has been little examined. We also interview Sarah Botstein, the co-director (with Ken Burns) of the new documentary The American Revolution, premiering on PBS on November 16th, 2026. This series brings forward voices that have been under-represented - as well as those figures that we think we already know- giving us a more complete picture of American life during the birth of our nation. Subscribe: Spotify | TuneIn | RSS Kymberly Dakin-Neal is a certified mindset coach, playback practitioner, and founder of Voice into Learning, LLC. Her specialty is team experience design, incorporating individual coaching programs and applied mediums such as improvisation, intentional listening, and focused creativity. Her book, “Head Heart & Hands Listening in Coach Practice,” is an essential book for coaches, teachers, salespeople, parents, and, actually, anybody who listens for a living. Through Kym's work and book, she demonstrates why listening is what the world needs more of. I met Kym at the International Listening Association Convention at the University of Maryland in August where we had a picture of us taken in the Listening Garden. Your WHY As an introvert in an extroverted culture, I've always been curious about group dynamics and how listening is a strong, if underappreciated, superpower that introverts possess. They are often the ones who have valuable insights and ask powerful questions. Introverts often (not always) have highly refined listening skills. Your Background and Overview I do training based on my book, and I work with clients who are struggling with transitions, change, and interpersonal issues. I was a founding member of Portland Playback Theatre and won an international Audie award for book narration. I recorded audiobooks for the BBC, Brilliance Audio, and Audible. I taught at Bowdoin College, the University of Southern Maine, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of New England. I currently train physicians in productive listening and patient communication at Tufts/MaineHealth and Kaiser Permanente in the Washington, DC area. Voice into Learning, LLC I do a fair amount of public speaking coaching, particularly with those who are transitioning into positions of greater visibility. Particularly for introverts, stepping into the spotlight can be challenging. As an introvert myself, I can help clients avoid the mental pitfalls of imposter syndrome and anxiety. The Positive Intelligence model is particularly effective in this kind of work. Your mind can be your best friend or worst enemy. Most negative emotions and stress come from self-sabotage. The Positive Intelligence PQ® program offers proven tools to strengthen mental resilience and quiet internal saboteurs. This leads to a more positive mindset, greater resilience, and reduced stress, known as mental fitness. I cannot recommend Kymberly enough! Once regarded with dread, my upcoming talk to an audience of 2500 should be a breeze. Kymberly meets you where you are, not engaging in cookie-cutter solutions.I feel that I have been equipped by a “magical helper” to embark upon my own Hero's Journey. Five stars, at least! ~ Jonathan Fisher Writer & Director of PBS Documentary on NYC Probation “In a Whole New Way” The Training Game Shift/POV I developed the training game Shift/POV: From Conflict to Collaboration in One Hour through the Top Gun incubator program and created a bookmarking app called Nugget to eliminate the need for note-taking in online meetings. Challenges of trying to get participants engaged while taking notes, or coursing through videos to highlight the important points I wanted to share. “Nugget” lets users highlight the important things in real-time at the touch of a button and allows them to share those notes with the team. We sold Nugget in 2023 for a nice price! Why is deep listening at the core of coaching? How do we build trust? Listening is how we grasp another person's story and build bridges to our own. It's how we create relationships and build trust across differences in skillset, experience, background, race, age and gender. Effective listening gives us information beyond the actual words – once we know how to slow ourselves down long enough to pay attention to it. When we feel deeply heard, something in us relaxes enough to feel that we just might be able to trust this person. That is how trusting, positive relationships are built. Book, “Head, Heart & Hands Listening in Coach Practice” My book, Head Heart & Hands Listening in Coach Practice, is an exploration of intentional listening as an essential skill for coaches. It introduces the Head, Heart, and Hands (3H) Listening model as a vital tool to amplify effective listening in coaching practice. This is essential reading for coaches in practice and in training, as well as organizational psychologists, HR professionals, salespeople, and those working within corporations. Head, Heart, and Hands Listening in Coach Practice is about how we listen, what we listen for, why it matters, and how to do it better. The 3H model provided in these pages is quickly grasped, easily applied, and could transform your next important conversation. If you are a coach, a counselor, a therapist, a salesperson, or a teacher, you're in a listening profession. This book is designed for YOU. “Head Heart & Hands Listening in Coach Practice,” published by Routledge Publishers, won a 2023 North American Book Award and is used at the Olympia Snowe Women's Leadership Institute. Kym Dakin writes about listening, but more important are her listening skills. As a coach she listens, synthesizes and provides valuable feedback…often on the spot. I came away from my coaching sessions with her with clarity on issues that I'd been struggling with for a long time. I can highly recommend Kym as a coach if you are looking to sort things out and find a clear path forward in your life. Sue Inches, Author, Educator, Environmental Advocate What else would you like to share about the power of listening? What do you pay attention to when listening? What do you often miss? As we approach the eve of the August 10, 1990, Arab League Summit; I thought this a good time for us to go back, with the help of the PBS Documentary series "Frontline", to the summer of circumstances that led to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.  So, we will relive the summer months prior to the invasion as we listen to the "Frontline: The Gulf War" Documentary sum up the issues between Iraq and Kuwait that escalated into the invasion. How Saddam Hussein mislead Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, who in turn assured President Bush that an invasion was not imminent. Then we will listen in on a Documentary on Former Secretary of State James Baker, as he describes going to the Soviet Union and bringing them into the coalition which in a lot of ways marked the true end of the Cold War. All of this while tensions mount and the world moves closer to war, and the United States starts negotiating with King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, to move more than 200,000 United States Military troops to the Persian Gulf to insure that Iraq will not make moves toward any other neighbors in the region. Then we will go to the coverage of the Arab League Summit where the Arab Nations stand with the United States against the aggression of Saddam Hussein against Kuwait. It is a united Arab League, with just a couple of hold outs. We want to recognize  "The Gulf War by Frontline" a documentary on the war, we used a long segment for this podcast to go through how the war started, and we recognize  "James Baker President-Maker Real Stories " Documentary for the use of the long segment from their documentary as well. I'll never forget the first time I caught Roy Wood Jr. on stage in LA; his electrifying presence had the crowd in stitches. Now, I'm beyond thrilled to bring that same infectious energy directly to your ears as Roy joins me to peel back the curtains on a career that's had us laughing all the way from comedy clubs to The Daily Show. Sit back and absorb the anecdotes of our shared history, from the heartfelt care package he sent during my deployment to his unforgettable stint at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Roy's narrative isn't just a series of punchlines – it's a masterclass in the resilience and connection that defines the comedy landscape.Cleveland's notorious weather, it turns out, may just be the secret ingredient to appreciating a good joke. In a conversation that meanders through preferred climates and memorable locations, Roy and I find common ground in the oddest of places. From LeBron James' effect on the city's morale to musing over who'd play us in a biopic – Keenan Thompson and Idris Elba, if you're listening, we've got some ideas – we tackle it all. Our banter extends beyond stages and screens, touching on the passions that color our lives offstage, and yes, that includes a shared love for video games and baseball cards.Wrapping this episode is a bit bittersweet, like ending a great night out with an old friend. Roy's candid reflection on bombing at the Apollo Theater is a poignant reminder that our missteps often shape our success stories. This chat isn't just about the laughs we've shared; it's a heart-to-heart on the lessons learned in and out of the spotlight. So, as I extend my gratitude to you, the listeners, for joining us on this journey, remember to stay tuned for more stories and insights that continue to ignite the torch of humor and humanity.Connect with Passing The Torch: Facebook and IG: @torchmartin If you enjoyed this podcast, check these out episodes Purple Heart Recipient Helping People Take Control of their lives & Hack Success with CIA Intelligence Officer, Decorated Military Combat Veteran and Fortune 10 Corporate Advisor Navy Seal Commander turned mindfulness and meditation teacher

Randall Balmer is a scholar, professor, author, documentarian (Emmy nominee), and Episcopalian Priest. Ken and Dr. Balmer talk about his new book, Bad Faith: Race and the Rise of the Religious Right. They discuss notable players in the movement like Senator Mark Hatfield, Harold O.J. Brown, W.A. Criswell, Paul Weyrich, Ralph Reed, and Richard Land. In the right's celebration of Ronald Reagan, the religious right movement did not, as many believe, begin as pro-Life but rather defending evangelical institutions against the IRS which required compliance with the Civil Rights law.  The genesis of the Religious Right had nothing to do with abortion - it was racial segregation. The bridge to understanding the election of Donald Trump is Ronald Raegan - as evangelicals abandoned Jimmy Carter. Ronald Reagan launched his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi at the Neshoba County Fair, confirming "State's Rights." The church basement classic, Thief in the Night. was inspired by Dr. Balmer's pastor father's sermon series on Revelation preached in his home church in Iowa in 1974. It's the story of The Rapture and Larry Norman's popular song "I wish we'd all been ready." College and graduate school introduced Dr. Balmer to the life of the mind. They remember Billy Graham's crisis of faith. In 1994, Dr. Balmer's book 1989 Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory became a PBS Documentary and featured Tony Campolo, Dolphus Weary, Fred Price, Bill Hybels, the black church in Mississippi, Hispanic Pentecostals, Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and many others. Today we are talking about the phenomenon that is the human soul and I'd like to begin with an observation. As a species, we humans aren't so good at dealing with things we cannot touch or measure, are we? I found a list on Listverse of the top ten images of invisible things. I'm struck with how many of them weren't visible until technology caught up to the point we were able to capture these once thought invisible phenomenon. How is the soul any different? Chances are if you're a listener, I'm preaching to the choir. But we are witnessing a time when doctors and scientists are becoming comfortable with the unseen, largely agreeing that the human conscience is real and that we are only now finding ways to document and study it further. This episode will cover the inception of naming a soul, the search to define the soul, the science behind proving a soul exists, the dark night of the soul, and more! After a six-week hiatus, we're back and with a fast-paced adventure story that rivals even the best of Hollywood. It's the story of Hannibal Barca. When outnumbered by the Roman military two to one, this fearless Carthaginian general, complete with eye patch and riding atop a black stallion, defied all odds in one of the bloodiest battles in all of antiquity, thus becoming one of the greatest military commanders the world has ever known. Join us as we delve into the life and times of this extraordinary man. Episode Notes:The immediate predecessor of Hannibal in Spain was his brother-in-law, Hasdrubal the Fair (not to be confused with Hannibal's brother, Hasdrubal), who ruled from 229-221 BC., after which Hannibal in 221 at the age of 26 took over Carthaginian Spain.According to some ancient sources, Hannibal did marry an Iberian woman named Imilce and they had a son, but we do not know this for certain. Books:The Punic Wars by Adrian GoldsworthyA History of Rome by Michael GrantHannibal: The Military Biography of Rome's Greatest Enemy by Richard GabrielThe Histories by PolybiusA History of Warfare by John KeeganFilm:Hannibal (2006) BBC FilmHannibal: A March on Rome (2018) DocumentaryHannibal in the Alps (2018) PBS Documentary
