New searches are underway by volunteers as the hunt for Sebastian Rogers continues. Glasses were found in the area and police are working to determine whether those glasses belong to the missing teen. Initially, mother Katie Proudfoot reports the autistic teen missing after finding his bed empty in the morning before school. An extensive search began with authorities using helicopters, drones, search-and-rescue dogs, boats, and teams on foot. Over 1,000 square miles have been covered, including a landfill across state lines in Kentucky. If you or a loved one is on the Autism spectrum, or if you have been curious about this condition, then you're about to learn some fascinating things about this often-misunderstood diagnosis. On our Love University podcast, we had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Sneha Mathur, autism expert, as she enlightened us on the truth about those who are classified as being on the “spectrum.” Sneha talks with Dr. Avila about the natural diversity and creative potential that these unique individuals may possess. Although a number of them can have challenges in social and behavioral areas, they may also exhibit great qualities of creativity, intense focus, loyalty, the ability to detect patterns, and passionate productivity. According to Sneha, what was once viewed as a severe mental disorder can be reconceptualized in a more positive way that respects the abilities and contributions of these extraordinary people.

Please I need some help, my 12 yr old son took a knife from the kitchen and was standing looking at me, when I went close to him to take it away he said I'm sorry. What happened before all this was that he was upset because every Sunday we let him pick a place to go to, park, restaurant, mall, etc and he also gets to eat fries which is his favorite, we'll the night before I checked his history on his tablet and found cartoons that he knows he can't watch became these cartoons show very inappropriate behaviors like beating people up and cursing, I have blocked the page so many times but somehow he manages to find it, so I took his phone and table away, that was the beginning of everything the next morning which is Sunday he kept asking for his tablet I said you can't use it yet, so he then started screaming, yelling and saying things like I want you to die mom, I'm leaving the house and never coming back and proceeded to get dressed and try to go out, I stopped him and he then started screaming more, I told him that we were not going out that Sunday because of his behavior and I say on the couch that's when I heard him in the kitchen getting something and I told him to come to the living room, that's when I saw he had the knife in his hands, he said he was sorry and he didn't want to go to jail, I told him what he did was very bad, he proceeded to scream and cry. He has a psychiatrist he sees once a month, he's on Sertraline 25mg 1x a day. I'm so devastated don't know what to do. I'm also scared don't know if he would attempt to hurt me, normally he's always saying he loves me and wants hugs from me. Don't know what to do please give me some advice. Normally he's loving kid. Lately he hass been defiant, he curses and just want to do what he wants, but I never seen him do this before, I'm so devastated, don't know what to think, say or do. 29:48 Helpful Tips for Unwanted Dietitian Visits I am going to a dietitian tomorrow and me and dietitians don't mix. I can't stand when people try to change my eating habits. I'm going for medically controlled weight loss, and it's needed by my whole medical team, but I am afraid of lashing out or if I get told I can't eat my favorite things anymore I might have negative behavior. I know they are doing it for my own good, but I don't like being controlled. I don't wait to embarrass my mom and stepdad. please help me. 38:42 How do you feel about older children watching younger programs? We're big believers that we must try to keep our child moving forward. As autistics tend to be immature as they grow up. 43:33 Do you have any advice on the Nemechek protocol? 45:24 What to do When the School Takes Away Your Child's Biggest Reinforcer I'm working on this with the school right now, Quinton likes to use his hand drawings as reinforcements. He had one bad day, where he lost one of them, and he went a little extreme. That day they said no more pictures without giving him an alternate type of random reinforcement, they tried to say absolutely no pictures, it was a punishment, everyone in his circle disagreed with With a School said they wanted to do. I've been taking a lot of data; this happened a week ago last Friday. 46:47 I need tips on how to address a BCBA who is overworked. I have the most amazing RBT but the BCBA isn't giving enough attention to my sons programming. She is assigning goals but not being specific, so it leaves the RBT to interpret how the goal should be run instead of her modeling. During supervision little to no feedback is given even when we are looking at her for direction. Help!

Recorded Live September 27, 2022 @10am PT 4:26 My son with ASD & ADHD is almost 13, and in the last few weeks his behavior has escalated significantly. We have an urgent appointment with his psychiatrist on Tuesday but I wanted to hear from other parents and experts. He has abruptly begun exploding violently with siblings over such offenses as “she was whining!” (he spit in 5 y/o sisters food when my back was turned and justified it because she was whining.) I hear a thud and ‘ow' from 3 year old in the other room. “He was going too slow on the stairs!” (He hit him into the wall.) I don't know what to do. I am terrified that he will seriously injure a siblings. All I can think of is the next time this happens we go to the hospital because I don't know what else to do. please help me 18:48 We are dealing with aggression. If my son is told “no” or can not do what he wants when he wants he tells us “you don't love me anymore? I”m going to leave and not come back.” How do we curb this? Not to mention he does throw things and hits but not all the time. 31:14 Tylenol Class Action Lawsuit PSA Sponsored by Shapiro Legal Group 33:10 Is autism and ADHD Related? 36:29 Can sensory issues can increase with age? 37:59 Is there a good trick to start pronouncing words more distinctly? Pointing and repeating the same words over again and mispronouncing words. 41:46 Do you think DRA is an appropriate intervention for a teen adjusting or maybe itching by private parts in public? Total time engaging in that behavior might be about 4 seconds long, 2 or 3 times a day. 47:09 ASD & Device Addiction 53:20 My non-verbal almost 3 year old son is still breastfeeding periodically through the day and night and is still sleeping in our bed. He's also a terrible eater and never tells me when he's hungry other than my assumption when he pushes me towards a chair and tries lifting my shirt. I don't really know where to begin to wean him because I don't know what he understands and I know he uses it for comfort. He wakes up several times a night to nurse and switch sides which means I'm awake too and getting angry that I'm not getting sleep. What do I do? Shannon Penrod's book is out now! We started during the shut-down, with just parent training but he now goes to the center 3 afternoons a week for 2 hours. He is on the Gluten Free, Milk free diet. I feel like we are doing everything right, but he is still only saying about 5 words and we are still having lots of hitting and aggression toward his baby sister and no one can get any rest. He is often up all night for days on end. What am I missing? Please help.” 22:06 “What is the average number of Trial sets per hour for a 3.5 year old who has been in ABA full time for 6 months. If I switched my son's ABA clinic, how much of a setback can I expect and do you advise against doing this?” 26:58 Which Treatment is more Effective? Home Based? or Center Based? “Is it better to have your child with ASD in ABA therapy that is home based or center based. Should I need to wait until his communication is getting better? or is it okay to start to the potty training? 49:13 Potty Training Advice I started to potty train a child at the age between 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 till now the child is going to be 5 later on this year and it is off and on. I have done everything I can and it is being destory:( 52:21 Mixed Receptive Expressive Disorder I was wondering if expressive language comes after receptive one. My son receptive language is exploding. 54:38 I think I found a doc I want to use via telehealth from Taca. No medmaps locally, and our local pediatrician hasn't been helpful at all. It is not functional but what does this mean? 32:37 Does brain function ever get better for our kids? 34:53 My son doesn't hum but he does make some noises. NOW, I am finally able to ask him and he gives me answer as to what he is doing. Like he'll say “Im thinking about jump scares on Five Nights at Freddy”. That is some video game be is really into. They are discouraged at his lack of progress and are afraid they will miss the window for teaching him necessary skills and language. 55:08 Potty Training (Standing up vs Sitting Down Do you have opinions on teaching boys to stand up to pee vs sitting down. ABA originally taught my son to sit down. So that's what he does, but times change and I had another BCBA tell me I need to teach him standing up. She made some valid points so now I'm wondering do I need to go that route now? He's 14. 55:47 Any suggestions on how to stop head banging? It's decreased 70% in the last 3 years but we haven't been able to extinguish it completely. 1:01:39 Coming up this week! Recording December 13, 2022 8:03 Help! How do I deal with my son's tantrums. I feel like no matter what I do it is wrong, in someone's eyes. I am terrified to go out anymore because I am afraid he will have a tantrum and I won't be able to know what to do. 17:17 During tantrums/meltdowns I get so emotional and overwhelmed and freeze , calming myself first is big thing for me 32:26 Age Appropriate Toys here is a question i want to ask. its not for me but i am curious about it. for example a kids special interest is paw patrol and its all over the Christmas list. and the therapist or another person says he needs a new age appropriate interest and there was no paw patrol under the tree. i heard about a similar story with Shannon. i would like to hear that story and how to handle a situation like that. I'm asking out of curiosity and helping other people. 41:38 My son gets upset and curses at teachers at school hello, my son 12 yrs old. When upset at school and sometimes home will curse at the teachers or aide. sometimes he will hit and always apologize right after, they have been trying to teach him what he can say or do when he's upset, he becomes mad when he cant have something or when he has to do something he does not want to do, he once said to the aid I'm going to kill you when he was mad. 47:03 My 11 Year Old Tantrums Every Time we are in Traffic. Good morning. My 11 year old son is extremely bright, has friends, hobbies and participates in sports. Our problem is when we are in the car and we get stuck in traffic he has a meltdown of crying, yelling, hyperventilating, and internalizing the situation. He'll say what did I do to deserve this? It looks like a panic attack. We have tried a car bag with books, fidgits, iPad, but he won't touch it. He will ask over and over to find out how long the wait will be, but sometimes we don't have cell service. It's like he needs information, but even if we know he still doesn't settle down. What can we do? Traffic is a part of life. Thank you 52:58 Help Controlling the No Reason Laugh 55:17 Feeling Overwhelmed with New School and Resources in a New City.
