Hey Friends~ When we talk about a lot of stuff with our kids - the stuff that isn't the important stuff; the stuff that is inconsequential, we develop the habit of interaction. When 90% of your interactions are wonderful, and then the hard conversations that do necessarily come, won't be as big of a deal. The Key: have LOTS of conversations.. Why? Because the inconsequential conversations have created a pathway to communicate. You have cut a bedrock so that you can talk about the important stuff, too. This is just one concept that you will hear in this fantastic, golden-ideas filled episode with author, Gina Prosch. Other topics in this episode: How freedom happens when we don't fear that failure. Give kids information in ways they can understand. Helping children learn how to be gracious and forgiving. Activities that push you to push yourself.. is PLAY. Always cheering you on! The benefits of coaching for moms begin with clarity, confidence, and contentment. Many women want it all! But when anxiety and emotional chaos ensue, achieving goals can feel beyond reach. That is where the benefits of coaching for moms come into play. With the help of coaching, you can maximize your potential in both motherhood and career. The benefits of coaching for moms: a story. Recently, during a coaching session with a client, she expressed her goal of losing weight. She had been trying for quite some time, but despite her efforts, including having an accountability partner, she continued to have cravings and fall short of her goal. The benefits of coaching for moms In the above story, you can see a clear benefit of coaching: identifying new ways to approach challenges associated with achieving a goal. However, for moms, coaching goes well beyond this example. To be even good mothers, we must first understand and connect with ourselves. If we are experiencing anxiety and emotional chaos within ourselves, we will not be able to achieve our goals. Likewise, if anxiety and emotional chaos are ensuing around us, we will not be able to achieve our goals, personally or professionally. Read the full show notes and access additional links. Hey Friends~ I love children's literature! It seems that ANYTHING you want to teach, you can find a book on that and use it as a springboard to help kids learn. This is especially true for social emotional learning. There is power in using stories! One mistake parents make is thinking they need to read a book as written! Today's guest brings us into her journey into authorship and then shows us …. how to take the story beyond the book! If you wonder how to use a piece of literature to enhance learning, listen in! In this episode, I respond to a question from Rachel in Missouri about a 5½-year-old client who refuses to poop in the toilet and insists on using a pull-up. We explore how this long-standing habit is likely a reflection of control and vulnerability, and how Child-Centered Play Therapy can gently address the emotional drivers behind it. I offer specific parent coaching strategies, including how to introduce a future transition date to allow the child time to adjust. I also explain how giving children limited choices—like choosing music or a book while using the toilet—can offer autonomy without re-engaging in power struggles. This week Ang is joined by Natalie McCabe, a practical visionary and dedicated single parent coach with over 30 years of experience in education. Natalie shares her inspiring journey from teaching and raising two children as a single mom, to becoming a parent coach who empowers families to find joy and resilience in parenting. Drawing from her personal story and her book Sink or Swim Parenting, Natalie discusses the challenges of single parenting, the importance of emotional regulation for both parents and children, and practical strategies to navigate difficult behaviors and family dynamics. (00:00) Introduction and Guest Introduction (01:56) Natalie's Journey into Education and Parenting (03:28) Creating a Childcare Center and Expanding Horizons (04:37) Transition to Parent Coaching (05:08) Understanding Parent Coaching (08:18) Managing Child Behavior and Emotional Regulation (13:38) Self-Care for Single Parents (20:13) Parenting Styles and Communication (24:08) Fear-Based Parenting vs. Love-Based Parenting (27:28) Building Relationships and Connection (28:25) Discipline as Teaching (31:44) The Power of Modeling Behavior (33:03) Self-Care for Single Parents (36:17) Introducing the Book: Sink or Swim (39:37) Building a Parenting Community (43:10) Final Thoughts and Advice KEY TAKEAWAYS Natalie explains how her early career in teaching and personal experiences as a single parent shaped her mission to support other parents through coaching. Parent coaching is not about criticism but about co-creating solutions based on each family's unique values and strengths, much like having a personal trainer for your parenting journey. Children's challenging behaviors are forms of communication; understanding the root causes helps parents respond calmly rather than react impulsively. Emotional regulation is crucial for parents, especially single parents who don't have a partner to share the load; small moments of mindful self-care can make a big difference. Natalie highlights the similarities between toddlers and teenagers in their emotional development and the importance of patience and calm responses during outbursts. BEST MOMENTS “One day my story will be someone else's survival guide.” “Parent coaching is your support person, not someone coming in to tell you what you're doing wrong.” “Children act out because they're trying to communicate an unmet need, it really has nothing to do with you.” “Regulating our emotions is super, super important — it changes how quickly a difficult situation can be resolved.” “Even washing dishes can be a moment of self-care if you're present in the moment and mindful.” GUEST LINKS Website https://nataliemccabe.com/contact Instagram https://www.instagram.com/natalie_mccabe_official/?hl=en Facebook https://www.facebook.com/p/Natalie-McCabe-Parent-Coach-100095530359277/ EPISODE LINKS Use the link below to sign up to the TalkingParents App. 30 Day FREE trial available alongside a completely FREE option too! https://talkingparents.com/dirhm If you enjoy this podcast here is the link to the book 'Do I Really H*te Men?'. Hey Friends~ You know in your gut when things are not going right, even if you don't have the words. It's even harder when you tell someone, but you are told that everything is fine… but you know SOMETHING IS UP. This is the case for today's guest. She knew that her son needed more help in his sound development, but was constantly told everything was fine. The Language of Play - Kids that Listen, Speech Therapy, Language Development, Early Intervention
Hey Friends~ Speech confidence is important for adults and kids. Whether you are speaking in public or saying your name in front of a class, we all want to speak with confidence and certainly that what we intend to say is what will come out. Fluency is one area of speech and language development. Many, many kids stutter when they are rapidly expanding their vocabulary and language skills. Many parents come to me and ask - what do I do? Does my child stutter? Today's guest discusses fluency issues from a personal perspective. So whether you have a toddler with a developmental stutter or a teen who has been diagnosed with a fluency issue, this episode is for you! Always cheering you on! Dinalynn CONTACT the Host, Dinalynn: hello@thelanguageofplay.com ABOUT THE GUEST: Jason Heffler is an author whose stories help young readers overcome speech disorders and fears around speaking. Drawing from his own childhood experiences growing up with and getting bullied for a stutter, he writes uplifting tales that build confidence in kids who lack self-esteem. His book 'Tongue Tied' is a resource to illustrate how speech issues do not define children. Doctors, parents and people who stutter have connected with the book's unique message: that they do not need to be "fixed." Instead of chasing a cure, they've shared how liberating it is to embrace the truth that their voice—exactly as it is—can carry them through a life filled with all the same possibilities as others. Is your home emotionally safe? In today's fast-paced, high-pressure world, families are struggling more than ever with conflict, stress, and disconnection. In this episode, host Davies Owens sits down with Rob Hayes-St. Clair and Michael Cox, the duo behind the Core 4 Framework and Parenting Made Peaceful, to discuss a better way forward.Drawing from biblical truth, restoration therapy, and years of experience mentoring families and teens, Rob and Michael explain how identifying our own emotional pain cycles—and learning how to replace them with peace cycles—can radically transform the way we parent. You'll learn how to recognize the four emotional “types” parents default to under stress, why your child's behavior often mirrors your own unspoken patterns, and how to bring lasting change through truth-based communication and emotional regulation. This isn't about being ruled by emotions—it's about understanding them and leading your family from a place of peace, not pain. Many young adults enter their post-high school years without the executive functioning skills needed to thrive. This is often because the people supporting them underestimate the amount of support they're getting, and there's no plan in place to fade that prompting. When young adults enter college, they have to manage sleep hygiene, long-term projects, and manage screen time. This is why I talk so much about using multiple service delivery models when supporting executive functioning; whether it be in the schools or in private practice; because many essential life skills cannot be taught without the right environmental scaffolding in place. That's why I invited Michael McLeod from GrowNOW therapy to talk about why he uses a combination of direct sessions, summer camps with community-based activities, parent coaching, and educator training. Michael partnered and worked with The Focus Foundation in 2015, learning from incredible doctors, neuropsychologists, and various specialists – gaining in-depth training and experience with ADHD and Executive Function research and development. He currently specializes in ADHD, Executive Functioning, Social Executive Functioning, and Parent Coaching. From his experiences as an Executive Function Specialist, Michael developed a distinct model of Internal Skills Coaching to enhance these skills. Michael is a Keynote Speaker and has presented nationwide and internationally, training families and professionals on his unique GrowNOW Treatment Model for fostering Executive Functions & Resiliency. In this conversation, we discuss:✅Do graduate programs prepare clinicians to work on executive functioning out in the field?✅Frontloading vs. traditional social skills sessions.✅Why helping families set boundaries around screen time is an essential part of the services clinicians offer.✅Defining failure to launch and what it looks like in young adults.✅Situational awareness and its impact on safety for college students. Hey Friends~ In today's world, we are taught to seek answers within ourselves. But if we stay there, we become self-absorbed or self-conceited and depressed. We need to also see outside of ourselves, looking for ways to contribute, serve others, and be connected to others. In having this balance, people become whole and happy. This foundation begins in the earliest years. Today, Jill Garner shares how SECURITY is learned, at what ages, and with examples of how it happens and how this links to our kids RESPECTING us as parents, respecting themselves, and others. Today's episode is a power packed conversation with LOTS of concepts. Grab your pen and paper. You might want to take notes! Always cheering you on! Hey Friends~ We experience play with our children in a variety of ways. One of those ways is Free Play. Free Play is completely imaginative and it is entirely directed by the child. Another way we play is Structured Play is when we use play to help our children go in the direction we want them to go. That may be learning, movement, practice, or anything really. In Structured Play, we have an INTENTION for our kids. That is why sometimes people call it Intentional Play. Kids need both to develop well! When we don't provide enough play, our kids suffer. Today's Guest tears apart some of the issues that are happening and what we can do about it for our children. Get out your Pen & Paper, or whatever you use to take notes, because you will learn a lot in this episode! Always cheering you on! In today's solo minisode I'm talking all about strong-willed kids. I've been talking a lot about this in my emails and on my social media lately because I know it's a topic that many parents struggle with. Strong-willed kids are the ones that I like to call fair fighters - they're always keeping score and want to make sure everything is right in their world. But this can cause them to easily spiral out of control the second things don't go their way. I want to share three key points that come up over and over again in one-on-one and group coaching in regards to strong willed kids.If this episode resonates with you, consider signing up for my group coaching program all about raising strong willed kids and emotional regulation for kids and parents starting November 21! The link to register is in the Resources. Does Your Kid Value Approval or Power? We set up an expectation and kids usually comply.Strong-willed kids don't seek or value approval from authority or parents. It's not important enough for them.Instead they value power but they don't have the capacity to hold all of it. They try to find out how much power they can have until they start to lose control.Strong-willed kids will then look for an anchor to keep them in a safe state when they start to lose control.Explanations Don't Work We try to give kids the tools and the choices to understand why things are happening. Explanations don't deter a strong-willed kid from their actions. An explanation gives information but they are not lacking information. It may be a bigger issue of impulse control, tolerating frustration, sensory overload, or something else.If there is a lack of information, the next time they face something similar the outcome will be different. Get to the root of what skills they need to develop to reduce the behavior you don't want to see. Self Regulate YourselfIt's incredibly triggering for parents when a strong-willed kid is emotionally out of control. It's important for the parent to self regulate themselves when the child is unable to.They are looking for someone to be calm in the storm. We have to create a really consistent, predictable structure through boundaries. This structuring takes time and will take a while to set the expectations and make changes where needed. Teaching them how to regulate their emotions is an important step to help your child foster their inner free spirit and communicate their needs and emotions.Resources: Sign up for my Group Coaching Program starting November 21: stan.store/theparentingreframe/p/group-coaching-raising-strong-willed-kids-51n42Joe Newman podcast episode: https://theparentingreframe.com/podcast-episodes/episode-49-a-raising-lions-q-a-with-joe-newman/ Sign up for a FREE 20 minute discovery call: https://stan.store/theparentingreframe/p/free-discovery-call-ck6qfBe sure to sign up for my Substack newsletter for longer and more specialized parenting content: https://albiona.substack.com/ I hope you found this episode helpful; for more parenting tips, check out my website and blog for more information. https://theparentingreframe.com/Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theparentingreframe/Follow me on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentingreframe

What Is Parent Coaching? Professional parent coaching provides psychoeducation and practical strategies. It's directive, goal-oriented, and typically lasts 1-6 months. It focuses on introducing and discussing new parenting strategies, offering support, and devising plans to implement them. Key Benefits of Parent Coaching: Improved family communication. Better parenting strategies and confidence. Solution-focused thinking. Mindset shifts in how to parent tweens or teens. Strengthened parent-child relationships. Who Can Benefit from Parent Coaching? Families facing issues like screen time struggles, communication breakdowns, transitions (e.g., marriage, death, adoption), and behavioral challenges. Parents of children with ADHD, dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Support for parents dealing with adolescent mental health challenges, substance abuse, or co-parenting issues. My Approach to Parent Coaching: Grounded in mindfulness and intentionality. Professional experience as an LCSW for nearly 30 years with knowledge of mental health, child development, and family dynamics. Personal experience growing up in a self-sufficient family in New Hampshire, which shaped my approach to self-determination and family cooperation. Incorporating mindfulness practices to help parents stay present and grounded. Parent Coaching vs. Psychotherapy: Coaching is more focused on the present and future, with the goal of achieving family harmony. Psychotherapy addresses mental health issues and is often focused on healing past traumas. I provide examples of when therapy is necessary and when coaching is a better fit. Family Coaching: Family coaching involves working with both parents and children to create real change. I discuss how family coaching leads to breakthroughs and faster progress than individual sessions. Despite sharing similar genes and identical conception, gestation, birth experience, and post-natal factors—as well as benefitting from consistent nurture, home environment, and family dynamics—each daughter presented an ASD diagnosis entirely uniquely. Early in our navigation, we adopted a ‘total load' theory, understanding that there was not one 'single' factor that catalyzed their diagnosis but the combined assault of many injuries. In accepting the very complex presentation of ASD, we also understood that there would be no singular ‘cure' for it either. Conventional statistics have stacked the odds against the ability to recover a child from an ASD diagnosis. Our approach was therefore focused on following a nonconventional, holistic understanding of each daughter's bio-individual needs, exploring root causes, and designing customized support. We began by choosing to pursue functional, integrative support centered around the foundational principles of diet, environment, and lifestyle. We vetted therapies that would deliver support in a naturalistic setting—primarily our home. We chose practitioners who were aligned with our belief in our daughters' intrinsic ability to heal, given the right support. We assembled a team that welcomed our engagement and worked cooperatively with each other. We committed to being highly involved in all the interventions we explored, educating ourselves, and advocating for what we felt was best for our children. Finally, we were strategic in focusing on sequence, using labs and other evaluation tools to measure progress, and harnessing the power of innovation to map genes and address cellular health. We explored modalities, both new and old while operating from a place of patience and curiosity. Most importantly, in our experience as parents has been the desire to create and maintain a profound and loving bond with each of our daughters—and to remain parents, not practitioners. Through this approach, we have witnessed the radical recovery of one daughter—who presents today as a joyful, engaging, spirited, extremely bright 4-year-old. We remain steadfast in our support for our other daughter, whose progress has also consistently amazed us and has reminded us that recovery is possible at each person's individual pace.References in The Episode:Reversal of Autism Symptoms among Dizygotic Twins through a Personalized Lifestyle and Environmental Modification Approach: A Case Report and Review of the Literature, The Journal of Personalized Medicine, Volume 14, Issue 6Twins With Autism Improved ‘Dramatically' After Parents Focused on Reducing Toxic Exposures, Children's Health Defense, The Defender, 6/21/24 Outsmarting Autism, Updated and Expanded: Build Healthy Foundations for Communication, Socialization, and Behavior at All Ages by Patty LemerDocumenting HopeThe Documenting Hope Conference, Orlando, FL, November 15-17, 2024Additional Resources:Take The Quiz: What's YOUR Top Autism Parenting Blindspot? To learn more about Cass & Len, visit us at www.autismparentingsecrets.comBe sure to follow Cass & Len on InstagramIf you enjoyed this episode, share it with your friends.
