Parent collaboration in ABA is more than regular updates or quick check-ins. It is about building real partnerships grounded in trust, empathy, and shared goals. We explore how shifting away from a “parent training” mindset can create stronger relationships and better outcomes for learners. From navigating difficult conversations to understanding family values and priorities, small changes in communication can make a major difference in how supported families feel.We also discuss practical strategies for creating meaningful collaboration, including scheduling noncontingent check-ins, listening before problem-solving, avoiding clinical jargon, and validating emotions during sensitive conversations. We share examples of how understanding the “why” behind a family's goals can help align treatment priorities while still staying ethical and learner-centered.When parents feel heard and respected, collaboration becomes easier, consistency improves across environments, and families feel more confident carrying strategies into daily life. Strong parent partnerships are not about having all the answers. They are about working together toward shared goals in a compassionate and sustainable way. What's Inside: How to move from parent training to true collaborationPractical communication strategies that build trust with familiesWays to navigate difficult conversations with empathy and clarityMentioned in This Episode:Episode 137: Parent Coaching/TrainingMastering Difficult Conversations: Building Confidence, Compassion, and Clarity in Communication CEUHowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on Instagram
Have you ever wondered what parent coaching actually is?Maybe you have heard the term but are not sure whether it is therapy, parenting advice, family coaching, or something else entirely. In this episode, Tess Connolly, LCSW, explains parent coaching in clear, simple language and shares how it can help families move out of repeated conflict and into better communication, stronger boundaries, and deeper connection.Parent coaching is not about blaming parents or fixing kids.It is about helping families understand the patterns they are stuck in.Why does the same argument keep happening? Why does your teen shut down? Why does your tween push back? Why do screen time, school, chores, anxiety, or respect issues keep turning into daily battles? Why do you feel like you are either being too strict or too permissive?Tess also explains how parent coaching differs from therapy, and why her background as a licensed clinical social worker informs the way she supports parents and families.Coaching is not therapy. It is not diagnosis, clinical treatment, or crisis care. But a mental health-informed lens can help parents better understand what may be underneath a child's behavior. In this episode, you will learn:What parent coaching is in simple languageHow parent coaching differs from therapyWhy parent coaching is not mental health treatmentHow a mental health-informed parent coach can help you understand behavior differentlyHow parent coaching supports communication, boundaries, repair, routines, and family dynamicsWhy parents do not have to choose between being permissive and being controllingHow to become a steadier, more connected leader in your familyWhy repair after conflict is one of the most important parenting skillsHow parent coaching may include your tween, teen, or young adult when they are willingWhy a coach can sometimes become a bridge between parent and childWhy relationship and connection are at the heart of everythingTess shares her belief that the best parenting skill is already inside of you: the relationship and connection you have with your child. That is what they leave home with, not a parenting strategy. If your family feels stuck in the same patterns and you are ready for practical, compassionate, grounded support, book a 45-minute Parent Reset Call with Tess. This call is a chance to talk through what is happening in your family, what you have already tried, and whether parent coaching could help you take the next step.Book your 45-minute Parent Reset Call through the link in the show notes.⭐Got screen time problems at home? Inside, she explores: → Why a dysregulated parent can't help a dysregulated child — and what actually has to happen first before any parenting strategy can work → The two reasons most parents struggle to stay regulated in hard moments: not being able to access tools when it counts, and not having a plan to follow through on → How the PAR method works in real time — Pause, Acknowledge, Respond, Reflect — and what it sounds like with a toddler tantrum versus a teenager who won't back down → Simple regulation tools you can use in the middle of a meltdown, including breathwork, body-based interrupts, and how to name what you're feeling without fixing it → How to build a plan for the predictable hard moments before they happen — so you're not scrambling, reactive, or white-knuckling your way through it Connect with Albiona: → Book a Free Discovery Call (1:1 Coaching) — https://www.theparentingreframe.com/coaching → Follow Albiona on Instagram — @theparentingreframe → Join Albiona's Paid Substack Community — https://theparentingreframe.substack.com → Email Albiona directly — albiona@theparentingreframe.com Loved this episode? In this episode, I talk about what letting go as a parent really means. If we understand what we are letting go of it changes everything. Letting go as a parent doesn't begin when your child leaves home - it starts much earlier, in the everyday decisions you make as they grow. This post explores how to transition from directive parenting to becoming an influence in your child's life. With practical examples and clear mindset shifts, you'll learn how to prepare your teen and yourself as your kids grow towards being an adult. Letting go isn't about losing connection or relationship - it's about changing how you let your child grow to be autonomous and self-governing. Parent involvement can completely transform a child's progress in therapy. In this conversation, we're joined by Mavis Debra, a clinical supervisor and international behavior analyst with Autism Compassion Africa in Ghana. She shares what it looks like to bring ABA practices into a growing field while helping families understand the power of communication. Many of the young learners Mavis works with struggle with foundational communication skills such as pointing, requesting, or gaining attention. Without these building blocks, frustration often shows up as crying, tantrums, or grabbing. By coaching caregivers to recognize these moments and teach simple ways to request, families begin to see meaningful change at home and in the community. We also explore how culture, extended family systems, and everyday routines shape parent coaching in Ghana, and why using simple, relatable language helps caregivers feel confident and ready to participate in their child's learning journey. What's Inside:Why foundational communication skills can reduce challenging behaviorHow parent training is evolving in GhanaPractical strategies for coaching caregivers in daily routinesThe importance of culturally responsive ABA practicesMentioned in This Episode:Autism Compassion AfricaAutism Compassion Africa on InstagramIBAO (International Behavior Analysis Organization)HowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on Instagram

ABOUT THE EPISODE: When Campbell Manning's middle son entered detox the day before Valentine's Day, she genuinely believed he'd be "fixed" and home within a week. What followed instead was a years-long journey through both of her sons' addiction cycles that would ultimately transform her from a completely naive parent into a trained addiction counselor who now helps hundreds of families navigate the same treacherous terrain. Campbell brings both the raw authenticity of lived experience and the clinical expertise she's gained through extensive education plus real-world training with Amber Hollingsworth (Put The Shovel Down YouTube Channel) at Hope For Families Recovery Center. In this potent conversation, she speaks directly to the particular torture of watching your child actively harm themselves while grappling with decisions that feel impossible, like when her 14-year-old daughter confronted her about how much more "time, emotion, money, and energy" she was going to give to addiction. What I love is that Campbell's wisdom isn't theoretical; it's forged from setting boundaries that ended up with her sons leave home at 17, refusing to enable behavior that was metastasizing through her entire family system, and learning that "over-loving" your child can actually be the most deleterious choice you make. Her message offers genuine hope grounded in reality: both her sons are in long-term recovery, and she's built a thriving coaching practice helping parents understand that their child's willingness to change often arrives in fleeting moments, which means your preparation and readiness matters profoundly. You'll learn: How Campbell navigated the brutal reality of having two sons in active addiction, including the crucial difference between heartbreak (first son) and fury (second son) in her emotional responses The concept of "tagging it on" and why your child must truly understand there's no one coming to rescue them before lasting change becomes possible Why disenfranchised grief - the kind that receives no casseroles, no sympathy cards, no community support, coagulates within families dealing with addiction and impacts every member, especially siblings How Campbell's daughter's confrontation about "how much more are you going to give addiction, Mom?" catalyzed her understanding that setting strong, healthy boundaries isn't abandonment, it's the most loving thing you can do when your child is drowning EPISODE RESOURCES:Hope For Families Recovery Center website Put The Shovel Down YouTube Channel This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityGet our free, 4-video course, Hope Starts Here, and access to our Limited Membership hereLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram hereWatch the podcast on YouTube hereDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Hey Friends~ Today's conversation is unusual for this podcast, but an important one. Over half of marriages end in divorce, and about 30% of those become high-conflict - deeply impacting children. This week, I'm joined by Lisa Johnson, a high-conflict divorce coach, to unpack the often-misunderstood topic of coercive control. We talk about what it is, the red flags within relationships, how it shows up during divorce and custody battles. We also explore Jennifer's Law. We discuss how it recognizes the many non-physical forms of abuse. Lisa shares how children are victims, used as weapons in adult conflict, along with ways parents can begin rebuilding secure bonds after trauma. ⚠️ Listener Advisory: This episode covers sensitive material and is intended for a mature audience. Parents should use discretion with younger listeners. I still hope you TUNE IN! Because understanding coercive control could make a life-changing difference for you or someone you love. Always cheering you on! They also offer a weekly Legal Abuse Support Group for those dealing with narcissistic opponents in legal matters. Their book, "Been There Got Out: Toxic Relationships, High-Conflict Divorce, and How to Stay Sane Under Insane Circumstances'' was released in March 2023. Hey Friends~ If you've been leaning on screens to help your little one talk, you're not alone. It often feels like the easiest option — and with all the advertising, it can even seem like the smartest choice when you're worried. But real language grows through real play. With Christmas coming up, I'm sharing ten toys and games that you can suggest to gift-giving friends and family - so you get gifts that provide powerful, communication-building opportunities. These ideas are fun, practical, and designed to work with how your child's brain naturally learns. Your little one is wired for human connection. Speech and language grow best through back-and-forth interaction with you. Those screens that promise to teach your child? They can't hold a candle to the power of parent–child engagement. If you want to help your toddler say more, understand more, and connect more, this is a beautiful place to start. And after listening, you'll understand why your everyday interactions are more powerful than any app — which is incredibly empowering for you as a parent. Always cheering you on! Hey Friends~ What if mouth breathing isn't just a habit… but a symptom? In today's episode, I'm joined by a guest who revealed something I hadn't fully understood in all my years in this field: crooked teeth, small jaws, restless behavior, trouble with focus, even lingering speech sound errors can ALL be connected to how well a child is BREATHING. You'll hear how an under-developed airway affects far more than speech and behavior. When a child is mouth breathing, they don't get the deep, restorative sleep their growing brain desperately needs. And deep sleep and proper oxygenation, everything from attention to learning can suffer. And make sure you listen through to the end, as we have something special for you!! Podcast listeners get access to a free online airway evaluation - a simple way to find out whether breathing might be part of your child's (or your own) challenges. Also, if you are from MN, WI, or IA, you have an exclusive discount for in-person clinic visits. So, if mouth breathing, snoring, focus struggles, or stubborn speech sound issues feel familiar… this might be the insight you've been missing. If you or your child snores, mouth breathes, struggles with focus, wrestles with behavior, or has speech sound challenges, this might be the missing piece you've been searching for. There is help for adults, so the listener discounts and freebies work for YOU, too! This episode might change everything for you and your child!! Always cheering you on! Hey Friends~ Recently, I got a written message from a listener who wrote, ‘My husband is Serbian and speaks Serbian to our son. I speak English, but I don't speak Serbian well. Our little one is just 17 months and very vocal — but in my expat group, parents worry their bilingual kids might be confused. How young is too young for two languages? And how old is too old for 2 languages?” It's such a good question — and one that so many families wonder about. In this episode, we'll look at how babies process two languages, the benefits, milestones, red flags, and what you can do - all geared for the multilingual home. If you would like to send your question, you can email me at hello@thelanguageofplay.com or Leave a voice message here: https://castfeedback.com/play . I may just highlight your question on the show! Hey Friends~ Today is the next in the SERIES: Speech & Language Delays, and we're diving into therapy and intervention options for parents - and looking closely at two main groups of kids. 1) The first group includes children who have been tested and qualify for speech therapy, but the help available just doesn't feel like enough. and 2) The second group is often the largest - and sometimes the most frustrated. Maybe your child was tested but didn't score low enough to qualify, or maybe you've never pursued testing, yet you know they're struggling. You might be homeschooling, caring for a very young child, or waiting because others have said, “Let's just give it time,” yet, deep down, you feel something more is needed. If that resonates with you, you're not alone, this episode is here to guide and encourage you. For parents in both groups, we'll explore 6 practical, parent-led approaches to help your child make real progress, whether you're working alongside a therapist or leading the learning yourself. Parents often worry that if they introduce signs, PECS, or an AAC device, their child will “never talk.” In this episode I share Julianna's story—how she lost language, how we taught functional communication with signs, and why that actually accelerated her spoken words. I unpack what changed for her brain, her motivation, and our relationship, and I cite research showing AAC does not block speech and can increase it.Key TakeawaysAAC (signs, PECS, devices) gives a child a reliable voice now, reducing frustration and building the language foundation that supports speech later.High-quality studies show AAC does not delay speech. Hey Friends~ Have you ever felt like your child is struggling, but not “enough” to qualify for help? They're bright, they're trying, but school still feels like a battle… What if the problem isn't your child… but the system? For decades, schools have measured every kid against one “ideal learner” or “the norm.” But what happens when your child's amazing brain learns differently? When your child struggles in school, the first instinct is often tutoring. What if the issue isn't the lesson - it's the learning process itself? Today, we're unpacking what educational therapy is and how it can change that story. So, if you've ever thought, “I know my child can do it, but something's missing,” this conversation is for you!
