The Mike Hosking Breakfast
Chris Bishop: Sports Minister on the open letter regarding transgender inclusion in sport

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

Minister for Sport and Recreation Chris Bishop says he is considering updating the guiding principles for transgender athletes participating in sports, after more than 50 Olympians and high-profile sports identities signed a letter challenging the Government to ban male advantage from women's sports. The group, including gold medal winners Barbara Kendall and Joseph Sullivan, accuses Sport New Zealand's guidelines of disregarding the rights of female athletes. It argues the guidelines allow males who identify as female to compete in women's sports without any explanation or transition. They believe that accepting self-identification as the sole criterion for inclusion goes against scientific evidence and disrespects female athletes. Yesterday, Bishop was presented the letter by former Olympic cyclist Gary Anderson, professional ironman athlete Candice Riley, and Save Women's Sport Australasia co-founder Ro Edge. “I think they make some fair points and we are considering updating the guidelines,” Bishop told the Mike Hosking Breakfast this morning. “The major point I think they make which I think has some merit to it is that the guidelines don't say anything at the moment about fairness. “It's a document-based, all-around inclusion, and that's really important because we want everyone, no matter their gender or how they identify to be able to participate in community sport – that is really important. We've also got to get the balance right between making sure that people feel like they can participate but also that there's fairness in the sports and safety for people participating as well. “I think the document could be updated to better reflect what I think the community expects from that so just having to think about that and once we've got a position on that, we'll we'll take it forward.” In June, the Herald revealed that following a comprehensive survey of 63 taxpayer-funded New Zealand national sports, 18 (29 per cent) of sporting codes have a transgender inclusion policy in place. Of those, 11 used Sport NZ's guidance to develop their policy. Some 45 (71 per cent) organisations did not have a policy, but 21 of those were developing one. At the recreational level, boxing and Triathlon NZ have open categories in which anyone, including transgender people, can participate. Setting age and stage conditions for the inclusion of transgender people in the gender they identify with is another approach. NZ Rugby League has a policy that at age 13 and over participants must compete in the gender they are assigned at birth. Other sports such as netball require participants, at certain levels, to have either undertaken hormone therapy, testosterone levels below a stated level, or provide a document confirming their legal gender. Bishop emphasised the guidelines were simply that and weren't mandatory. “Some sports are doing this quite well and are grappling with it. Others are sort of yet to kind of turn their mind to it, particularly comprehensively, and the guidelines will help in doing that,” he told Hosking. “They're just, it's meant to be just helpful guidance for sports to use as they navigate through this issue.” Asked whether Sport NZ shared Bishop's views, the minister told Hosking it was a government department that reported to him and was required to give effect to government policy – if he asks them to update the guidelines, they will have to. What's masters rowing like in the South Island of New Zealand? We meet South Island Rowing chairman, Peter Midgeley. Timestamps 00:30 South Island of New Zealand has an association who owns and runs the Twizel lake which includes a 2k rowing course. The NZ National Champs and NZ Secondary School champs (Maadi Cup) regatta are held there. The Cup was first raced in Egypt after the Second World War in Maadi, Cairo, Egypt. It was brought home by returning soldiers and is now presented to the fasters secondary school boys eight each year. 02:45 The Clubs in South Island NZ One club is only masters, most have a masters section. Many are small (20 rowers) half are recreational and half want to race. There's a year calendar which Peter sets. There are 5 major regattas a year and the masters have set events within those regattas. They use the handicap system which counts down additional seconds so everyone finishes at the same time - making a better spectacle for the crowds watching. Every second year the NZ Masters Championships are in the South Island held in September. And the South Island Masters Champs is in June - starting 22 years ago. Now it's got about 25 cups and has 2-300 participants. It's in the coldest weekend of the year! The format starts with a long distance race the first day, 1k mixed racing with a BBQ in the evening. The 1k regatta is on the second day and has a dinner/dance afterwards. Peter recalls racing in the snow at Twizel once for that regatta. 07:30 Peter explains that this year the organisers are 'testing the waters' about moving the weekend to Anzac Weekend in April - which is a bit warmer. The idea of the regatta is to go to the rivers and lakes where there used to be regattas. The size of the regatta now is limiting this. Peter recounts the story of the New Years Day regatta at Picton when the Interislander Ferry came in with a huge wake disrupting the event. Wise coxswains turned their boats sideways to ride the wave, but one boat got swamped. Joseph Sullivan is from Picton Rowing Club who won gold in M2x at London 2012 Olympics. 10:00 Innovations in masters rowing. Rules can only be changed every 4 years - it gets voted on at the AGM. So change is slow to happen. Masters need to get the clubs on board because in NZ we are very school-oriented. The majority of rowers are under 18. The masters are the backbone of clubs - they are in the sport for longer than parents. They're only there for 3-4 years while their child is rowing. Many clubs are run by masters who have the time, money and knowledge as well as the staying power. The average master stays 10 years in a club. Coastal Rowing is going to give good growth for coastal clubs to bring on masters novices. Peter sees the opportunity to advance them faster as they learn to row without balance. This facilitates moving into fine narrow boats later. It's easy to teach the basics of slide control and blade handling. 14:15 What next? How to get masters onto a more equal footing with young people in the club. Peter says most masters are seen as second rate. Get onto the committee and be positive - be the oil on the squeeky wheel - and get things done. South Island Rowing has a website with all the clubs and associations including club contact details if you want to visit. There's a club in every town and city in the South Island which has a river. This bite size snippet comes from my full conversation with the legnedary Joseph Sullivan.  Think of this as sort of like a trailer for a TV series on Netflix.  If you like this, maybe check out the full conversation when you have the time. After winning an Olympic gold medal for rowing in 2012 Joseph Sullivan found himself lost and in a bleak mental head space after he was pretty much shafted by rowing NZ, the organization and sport he had devoted a large chunk of his life to. In this clip, he talks about how he ended up finding his purpose again by joining the NZ fire service. Joseph is still a fire-fighter.  And has also gone on to win two Americas Cup's as a grinder for Team New Zealand.

At the 2012 Olympics, he won a gold medal.  His rowing race was so epic that he won a Halberg Award for "New Zealand's Favorite Sporting Moment". He retired prematurely in 2014 after being screwed over by Rowing NZ, something which broke him and took a while to recover from. Since then, he has found a new purpose in the NZ fire service.  He got married, had 2 kids.  Oh, and trained as a grinder for Team NZ and won the Americas Cup.  Twice. Joseph Sullivan, the Olympic Gold medalist in rowing, the 2 time Americas Cup winner with Team NZ and an absolute lad! This really is an incredible story of someone who wasn't built to be an Olympic rower, who went on to become one of the greats. Purely through his mindset and effort. The story leading up to his Olympic gold medal moment is crazy. It's a moment that inspired the country and is one of the best moments in NZ sport ever. It won the best sporting moment of the decade at the Halberg awards last year. It wasn't just pre the Olympic yarns that blew my mind, as how Joe was treated after the event was also unbelievable. I think many Olympic athletes would be able to relate, that once the big event you've trained so hard for is over, it's a real challenge to get back to a "normal" life. As he was battling away in a dark space, Team NZ randomly came into the equation and Joe became a 2 time Americas Cup winner as a champion grinder. I really enjoyed hearing this story and as you'll hear Joe is an absolute lad who is pretty inspiring with what he has done. If you enjoy this episode please give it a share, comment or like so others can be inspired from this champion lad as well!

You can also find me on tune in and any other streaming podcast app that you might care to look for me. I'm pretty much everywhere. We are going to talk right now about Uber. There are many people who are really not knowledgeable about security that are in security jobs and positions. I would say that the majority of people that are in jobs responsible for security are not fully qualified. They know more than everybody else in the organization, but that doesn't mean they're qualified. So that's one class. Of course, you have the people who really do know what they're doing. They are few and far between. Then you have Uber's former chief security officer. He just got nailed over a coverup of a hack that had occurred at Uber. This is really fascinating because he played some games. He played very fast and loose with the truth and a criminal complaint ended up getting filed against him. In federal court this week, the guy's name is Joseph Sullivan. If you look at a picture of him, he's got the kind of beard that almost makes him look like he's one of these gangsters.  I have a thing about facial hair and maybe it's just my generation, my age. I'm not sure what, but he looks creepy to me, that a beard thing that he has Joseph Sullivan, but he was charged with obstruction of justice and misprision of a felony connected with the attempted coverup of a 2016 hack of Uber. Now isn't that interesting here? And this is a, I'm getting this from justice.gov and it's United States attorney David Anderson, and the FBI were involved in this, Craig de Faire. And this is really an interesting story when you get right down into it. And we'll cover a little bit of that right now. But according to this complaint that was filed between April of 2015 and November of 2017. This guy, Joseph Sullivan, he's 52 years old lives in Palo Alto, California. Where else he was Uber's chief security officer. Now, he was contacted by two hackers via email that said that they had been able to hack Uber's system and they were able to download a database that had personally identifiable information-on 57 million Uber users and drivers. Now, remember Uber is the company that had this God-mode is what they called it. Uber is a company that had employees, including apparently their CEO. Watching people getting driven and where they started, where they ended up. Now, we'll go, okay. you got to do a little quality control. Hey, I get that. It turns out they were monitoring celebrities, finding out where the celebrities lived, watching them go, where they were going, that the type of stuff you need. Yeah, in order to twist arms, right? Hold their data a little bit in ransom, little pirate operation going on there. So they got in trouble for that one too. They have been hacked before. So apparently this Joseph Sullivan guy, when he got the email look to see, did this actually happen? And they found, yeah, indeed. At least this is what the criminal complaint is alleging. They did indeed get them the driver's license numbers for approximately 600,000 people who drove for Uber. Think about that for a minute. And what are licenses good for? Oh yeah. This year voting, right? Yeah. Yeah, because there's no ID is necessary. It's just mailed in. 57 million users and drivers over half a million driver's license numbers. What he apparently did was he went and used Uber's bug bounty program. Most companies have that nowadays. It's Hey, you found a bug in our software in our system. We will pay you because we appreciate that. We'd rather you did it and we pay you a bounty than for bad guys to find it. All right. apparently, he was being extorted here because these hackers demanded a six-figure payment in exchange for their silence. Now that's become very popular nowadays, by the way, this was a few years back. Now, nowadays ransomware works in two ways. One, they say, Hey, if you want your data back, if you want to decrypt it, you got to pay up. The other way it works is that this ransomware downloads your files, first. So the bad guys have it, so they will ransom it one way or the other. It'll say, Hey, you pay up or I'm going to release all of this data. Or in this case, I'm going to give Uber or black eye. Cause I'm going to tell the media about it and release it. Or Hey, if you want your data decrypted, you gotta pay me. They can get, they're getting clever. These criminals. That's very common nowadays. So it alleges this criminal complaint. That Sullivan took deliberate steps to conceal deflect and mislead the federal trade commission about the breach. Why? it turns out that a month or so later, their FTC filing was due and part of that needed to be about the security that they were taking because prior settlements with the government and the court required them to report on their security operation. Yeah. Yeah. interesting Justine and the charges and the statement I've got there. In fact, when I'm reading it from here is the justice.gov, but it actually has the information about the indictment. So this is very one-sided. There's nothing here from Sullivan's attorneys. It's just what the government is saying. So the complaint also describes how Sullivan. Played a pivotal role in responding to the FCC inquiry about Uber cybersecurity.  It's just absolutely amazing. Okay. So what do we learn from this? I think we learn a few things. First of all, if you are a business owner and you have any data at all, really nowadays, it's pretty much every business. Even if you don't have driver's licenses, do you know what you got, you might have bank account information, your own bank, account information, not even just customers or businesses that you trade with, where you're just transferring funds back and forth. You might have all of that stuff on your computers. And we do scans for businesses and we look specifically for bank account numbers, social security, numbers, phone numbers, all kinds of stuff that is illegal to disclose. it's absolutely amazing. Apparently Uber paid the hackers a hundred thousand dollars in Bitcoin in December 2016, and hackers obviously never provided their true names. Sullivan tried to get the hackers to sign nondisclosure agreements and these agreements that Uber's lawyers put together contained false representations saying that the hackers did not take or store any data, which apparently is not true. So this complaint goes on. It's absolutely amazing. Again, if you're a business, all 50 States now have laws that require you to disclose when data is stolen. You have to disclose it and you cannot hide it. Particularly if you are a publicly-traded company or if you're a division of a publicly-traded company earlier in the show, I mentioned this whole pencil whipping forms thing where people have a form, it might be for the insurance company and might be for federal or state regulators and they just check the box. Yup. yup. Yup. Yup. Even though they don't really know. And they don't know enough to know that they don't really know. Okay. So we have to be very careful about that. And so that's why we do these scans. In fact, we do them daily for our customers just to see if the data is out there. So make sure you're not storing any of that data. I am a bit of a packrat myself, a digital packrat. I have stuff going way back when, but I make sure I don't have any PII. At least I try and make sure of that. You need to do that too. If you're a consumer, remember again, all 50 states have in place laws to help protect you. Now about the only thing that you might be able to do is get a couple of bucks from a settlement. Look at this. I filed for my settlement offer from Equifax, which is how many years old now, where they lost all of your personal data was all stolen. Maybe four years, five years ago, by hackers it's known to have been stolen. They admitted it was stolen because they didn't keep things patched up and their security people were underfunded work too hard. Which happens every day in this country, unfortunately. And, who knows? the attorneys did, they got their tens of millions of dollars in attorney's fees that happens every year here in this country. I'm still waiting for my supposed check for $25. They're now saying, it was probably gonna be a lot less than $25. Cause you know, attorney's fees, right? I added that last part, but this is absolutely ridiculous. It's ridiculous. So if something does happen, if your data shows up on the dark web, you should take action. Cause that's the only way these businesses are going to get their act together. Craig Peterson: [00:11:08] So I want to encourage you right now to go to a website it's called, have I been pwned dot com. Have I been pwned is like pawned, but with a P w n e d  dot com. Okay. Look there, put in your email address and they will search their databases of known hacks. The data existing on the dark web and have been pwned will tell you where your data was stolen. Craig Peterson: [00:11:35] What was stolen. Might've been just your email address might include your name, your social security number, bank, account numbers. They pretty much have it, but all, and then you can contact these various companies where your data was stored your people, and maybe you should get involved with the criminal complaint. Against some of these companies be part of a class-action lawsuit, make some bucks, we've got to stop this. We've got to get people smartened up. If you are working for a company and they've got your personal information, you're going to want to hear this too. Hi everybody Craig Peterson here on WGAN. Thanks for joining me today. I'm on every Saturday from one until 3:00 PM. And if you miss any part of the show, make sure you go online. Craig peterson.com. All right. apparently he was being extorted here because these hackers demanded a six-figure payment in exchange for their silence. So the complaint also describes how, Sullivan.
