The College Essay Guy Podcast: A Practical Guide to College Admissions
On Season 1 of the podcast, Ethan had a great conversation with Maria Furtado, then Executive Director of the Colleges That Change Lives organization (also known as “CTCL”). It's a lovely chat and to date one of our most downloaded episodes. On today's episode Ethan had the pleasure of sitting down with her successor, Ann Marano, and they get into: Where to start when it comes to the college search How to myth bust yourself (a practical exercise) What questions to ask when you're searching for a college Some things Ann and Ann and Ethan wished they had done differently when they went through the process themselves Busting some affordability myths What it means to keep a student at the center of the college search If you've never met Ann, you should know that she is a proud first-generation college graduate of Mount St. Mary's University (CA) who earned her M.A. in Education-Psychology from Pepperdine. She's served on several counselor advisory boards, including the Common Application Board of Directors and the Johns Hopkins University Access Advisory Board. After 20 years in college admissions counseling at several different universities and high schools and 12 years as the college bound advisor at the first all girls' public school in the state of Texas, Ann Marano moved into the role of Executive Director for the Colleges That Change Lives. An interview with the only living signatory of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. What an honour and privilege to speak with The Honourable A. Brian Peckford P.C., on the current state of Canada. It's a long one, but worth every minute. Brian was born August 27, 1942 in Whitbourne, Newfoundland. He graduated from Lewisporte High School in 1960. In 1966 he graduated with a BA in Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He later did post graduate work in English Literature and Education Psychology. He taught high school in Sprindgale, Newfoundland, and in 1972 he entered Provincial Politics. In March 1972 Brian was elected the first Progressive Conservative MHA in the history of the riding at age 29. Later that year he became Special and Parliamentary Assistant to the then Premier, Frank Moores. In 1974 he was appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and in 1976 Minister of Mines and Energy. While Minister of Mines and Energy, he also served for some time as Minister of Rural Development and Northern Affairs. In March 1979 Brian won the Progressive Conservative leadership convention and became the third Premier of the Province since Confederation. He was at 36 the youngest first minister of Newfoundland since the First Prime Minister, Philip Little in 1855. Brian became a strong advocate of Provincial Rights as manifested in his efforts to gain some control and revenues from the newly developing offshore oil and gas resources culminating in The Atlantic Accord. This groundbreaking Agreement brought revenues to the Province as if the resources were on land, around $30 Billion to date, and a say in the management of the resource. Brian was involved in the Constitutional Patriation Process of the early 1980's leading to the Constitution Act of 1982. It was Newfoundland's proposal presented at the Conference that led to the breakthrough. Brian is the only living First Minister of that Constitutional Process. Mr. Peckford retired from politics in March 1989 and began a consulting company, with his wife Carol, assisting companies in Europe and North America. He has written two books, the last, ‘Some Day The Sun Will Shine And Have Not Will Be No More,' a Globe and Mail best seller in 2012. He has received awards as an Outstanding Young Canadian and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association. We're back after a short break! Our guest today is Melissa Wasserman, psychologist, speaker, consultant, and trauma expert. In this wide-ranging episode, we talk about her untraditional career journey and how the pandemic has caused a lot of chaos in our personal and work lives. Melissa also shares her best piece of advice about navigating challenges, cultivating resilience, and some tools that you can use to implement in your daily life. Learn more about Melissa and her story at: www.growingcareersandcompanies.com. “One of my biggest values and such a big part of my identity is being relational and being human.” 03:52 Melissa grew up in a Jewish family and her parents both worked in the real estate industry. She was always very active as a child and valued meaningful relationships. She attended religious school growing up and attended religious studies in college. During her years in college, Melissa had a class about American religion and its impact on the Vietnam War. She learned about family traumas in military families and realized that this was her calling in life. She became a licensed psychologist and a trauma expert. “Communication is a mega resilience factor in systems to buffer the impact of mental health symptoms.” 16:47 Melissa shares some advice on how to navigate through challenges. Reflect on previous challenges that have already passed. How did you go through those? What have you learned? Identify some strategies that you already used successfully in the past and think about how could you use those in your current situation. Be aware of the warning signs of burnout. Don't wait until you feel completely burnt out, practice self-preservation and self-care continously. Melissa is a trauma expert and specializes in generational family traumas. In her experience, family traumas are stronger in families where they don't have good communication with each other. Communication is key and it is a huge resilience factor, so it's important to learn how to communicate well and listen to each other. Melissa started her business just a few months before the global pandemic. This presented a lot of challenges for her, but she loves the dynamic work environment and wearing many hats as a business owner. The Final 3 Questions What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn? Patience - not just with others but mostly with herself. Making mistakes is part of the human experience, so we need to be kind to ourselves and learn from them. What are the 2 principles from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework that resonate the most with you? Purpose and Community. These two words are greatly interconnected to Melissa as she finds purpose in community and through connectivity. What do you hope others take away from your story? That we are all human and we are all resilient. Be gentle and kind to yourself and others. In this episode, Dr. Waldman talks about the importance of marketing your private practice. Challenge yourself to promote your practice once a day. By the end of the year, some type of marketing will stick. Plus, Dr. Waldman speaks about utilizing the internet for your private practice marketing. Later, we talk about the various ways to increase your income. Dr. Waldman reveals how he grew his income significantly in his practice, allowing him a comfortable retirement. Meet Dr. Larry Waldman Dr. Waldman is a recently semi-retired certified school psychologist and licensed clinical, forensic psychologist in Phoenix, Arizona. He conducted a highly successful private practice of 45 years working with children, teens, parents, couples, and adults in a solution-focused manner. He also consulted with family, personal injury, immigration, and estate planning attorneys. His BS in Education/Psychology was from the University of Wisconsin; his MS in School Psychology was from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; his Ph.D. in Educational/School Psychology was earned at Arizona State University, and his Diplomate (ABPP) was received in 2003. Do Some Type of Promotion Every Single Day As a professional speaker, Dr. Waldman is accustomed to talking in front of large groups. How does he do it? Well, he thinks about what is the worst thing that can happen – exactly what he tells patients. When it comes to marketing, Dr. Waldman would make a point to promote his practice every single day. He would do a phone call, a podcast, an email, or something along those lines. It's essential to be persistent and consistent with things. Over the course of a year, you have several hundred things that you tried. Eventually, something will stick. That's how Dr. Waldman got himself into some lucrative situations. Virtual Private Practice Marketing The most significant trend in private practice marketing is the internet. A lot of young clinicians are finding value in marketing on the net. If you can get in front of a group of potential referral sources and speak knowledgeably to them, that's the best marketing in the world. They will view you as an expert and refer other clients to you. Marketing in private practice is more about helping people find you. Then, you need to know how to help them once they find you. The internet has completely turned the private practice marketing world upside down. People have to know who you are, where you are, and what you do. Earn Passive Income As A Therapist Therapists do noble work. They save marriages, and they protect people from suicide. Therapists deserve to be compensated appropriately for their work. Dr. Waldman started to develop passive streams of income. He earns income when he isn't sitting in front of clients. One of the ways to build income is by writing books. The first book that he wrote is titled Who's Raising Whom? A Parent's Guide to Effective Child Discipline. That book is still generating passive income for Dr. Waldman. In fact, you can find a copy of it here: https://www.amazon.com/Raising-Parents-Guide-Effective-Discipline/dp/0943247152. Dr. Waldman provides a simple, step-by-step process using basic behavioral Psychology to teach parents how to manage and modify their children's behavior more effectively. Increase Income Through Real Estate or Public Speaking Another way to increase your income is by public and professional speaking. Typically this type of gig is on the weekends and after hours. Luckily, it won't interfere with the hours of your private practice. Plus, you can sell the books at those speaking events. It's a great marketing tool for your private practice as well. Another way to increase income is by buying your own building. Dr. Waldman has nine renters in his building. He makes money from their rent. That way, when Dr. Waldman isn't working, he is still making money. Then, he uses that money to purchase other real estate investments. Now, Dr. Waldman is comfortably retired. Are You Trading Your Time For Money? Unfortunately, the majority of clinicians out there is trading time for money. They only make money when sitting in a chair and a client is in the other chair. You can make a decent living doing this type of work. If you trade time for money, there is only so much time to work. The people who become wealthy are outside of this dynamic. You have to monetize your time. One way to do this is through group work. That way, six patients can be paying you instead of one. Some clinicians only do group work, you will be making a pretty penny, and it certainly beats the one patient per hour dynamic. The Daf Yomi from a Psychological Perspective For Mareh Mekomos Click Below Who are צדוקים ובייתוסים and how are they different? Mishna Avos 1:3 Avos Drav Nasan 5:2Antigonus, a man of Sokho, had two students who were studying his words. They would then teach them to other students, who would then teach them to yet other students. Those students then questioned what they had learned and said: Why did our fathers say [such a thing]? Is it possible that a worker should labor all day and not receive his compensation in the evening? If our fathers had known that there was [another] world, and that the dead would be revived, they would not have said this. So they decided to separate from the way of the Torah. Two factions emerged from them: the Sadducees and the Baitusees. The Sadducees (Tzadukim) were called that because of Tzadok, and the Baitusees because of Baitus. And they would make a point of always using gold and silver things, not because they were so enamored of them, but because they said: The Pharisees have a tradition that they will deny themselves in this world. Yet in the next world they will have nothing! Rambam commentary on Mishna Avos Are Baytusim and Tzadokkim the same? Are they interchangeable? Interestingly, the Mishna as quoted in the Gemara Rosh Hashana 22a, refers to Baytusim, but in the text of the Mishna it says Minim, Which is a generic term for various heretical sects (See Rambam Pirush Hamishna Chulin 1:2) מתני׳ אם אינן מכירין אותו משלחין עמו אחר להעידו בראשונה היו מקבלין עדות החדש מכל אדם משקלקלו הבייתוסים התקינו שלא יהו מקבלין אלא מן המכירין: Tosafos Yom Tov (Rosh Hashana 2:2) notes this and explains that the different names have to do with historically who actually did what, but it does not seem to attribute different philosophies: Mishna Menachos (10:3) Tosafos Yom Tov ibid also says they are interchangeable: But Tiferes Yisrael ibid says they each had a different philosophy : Regardless of their origin, it is important to understand they did not survive. And the reason is of a great significance to us. One of the functions of so many of the rabbinic enactments in the era immediately pre-and then post destruction of the temple was to find ways to maintain consistency and meaning for the Jewish people once there no longer was a center of worship. Many of the enactments are designed to create either a sense of individual worship, or uniformity, such as the various rituals for prayer as well as the investment of power in local. rabbinical Authority. Other type of a enactments such as muktzeh which were expanded upon and other gedarim allowed for bringing holiness into every day life such as washing hands similar to the priests before eating, which also elevated eating into an almost sacrificial table. Ultimately, the rabbis won with their idea of Judaism persisting and the other secys were relegated to the dustbin of history. What is their status as Jews? This is relevant to their philosophical heirs such as reform or possibly conservative Jews, depending on if they keep mitzvos and believe in the Oral Torah. Rambam in Hilchos Mamerim 3:3, after describing all kinds of vigilante actions that can be taken against heretics, states the following:
In this episode of The Healers Café, Dr. Manon Bolliger, ND, chats with Dr Larry Waldman who is passionate about teaching mental health practitioners how to develop a successful practice and become an effective clinician. I am also very interested in teaching parents to parent and instructing therapists to help parents raise responsible resilient kids. Listen to the full story today! https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/dr-larry-waldman Highlights from today's episode include: Dr. Larry Waldman (09:00): So hypothetically let's say this child grew up in a home, which was chaotic. Let let's say the, the parents argued frequently. Maybe mother perhaps was depressed herself and so on. And so therefore this child grew up in an environment where at any moment at any time something could happen, you know a pot could be thrown across the room. Somebody could have a temper tantrum, a door might slam or, and so on. And so the child then came to view their world as a dangerous place. And as a place that that could change on a dime where they have no control at that they're insignificant and so on. Well, you can see if that's what this child learned, and by the way, given their life at that moment, that's not unrealistic. They have, an accurate view of what it was, what was going on, but what happens you see, as the child develops this life view and then carries it on into their adulthood. Dr. Larry Waldman (16:28): II've had many individuals who that I work with and so on. And, you know, and often I'll say that, you know, you're doing a good job of depression. you're staying up late, you're sleeping through the days. So you're mixing your days and nights up around, you're eating junk, You're not answering the phone. You're not socializing. When, you go out, you don't smile. You don't even brush your teeth. You know, you wear old clothes and so forth. You know, you look and act like you're depressed. So you're doing depression. I use behavioural psychology, particularly when I work with parents, because it's, it's the easiest, if you will, to comprehend and to implement. Dr. Manon (23:21): So, in a sense what I'm hearing you say is that it's good for the patient or the client to somehow be informed about the type of therapist that they're going to go to. It's like, you know, You're not going to ask a butcher what the right vegetables are to eat. It's not going to be the same thing. So you have to align with the type of therapy that makes that you feel resonates with you on some level, you really make a good point. In mid-2017, Tyanna graduated from Wayne State University where she obtained her Masters of Education in Educational Psychology while also completing the necessary curriculum to be eligible for BACB certification. In February of 2018, Tyanna became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Author and psychologist Clifford Mayes PhD explains how our American education system is damaging children, discusses Freud and Jung, and how individuals can seek their path of meaning and purpose in life. My website: https://www.ryanholsappleguide.com Dr. Mayes email address: Jabberwocky1400@gmail.com Dr. Mayes Bio: A Jungian scholar, Mayes has produced the first [1] book-length studies in English [2] on the pedagogical applications of Jungian and post-Jungian psychology, which is based on the work of Carl Gustav Jung (1875–1961). Jungian psychology is also called analytical psychology. Mayes' work, situated in the humanities and depth psychology, is thought to offer an alternative to the social sciences model. [3] Mayes has developed what he has termed archetypal pedagogy. His work aims at promoting what he calls archetypal reflectivity in teachers; this is a means of encouraging teachers to examine and work with psychodynamic issues, images, and assumptions as those factors affect their pedagogical practices. Archetypal reflectivity, which draws not only upon Jungian psychology but transpersonal psychology generally, offers an avenue for teachers to probe the spiritual dimensions of teaching and learning in non-dogmatic terms. Mayes' archetypal pedagogy also examines salient issues in curriculum theory and instructional theory through a classically Jungian lens. Recently, his work has turned to what he calls "educative processes," which sees teaching and learning as inherent in all human relationships of any emotional, cognitive, or ethical moment (2020, 2019, 2017).
Andrew Martin, Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of New South Wales, offers his insight on the topic of student motivation. In this conversation, Andrew explores the connection between student motivation and success and breaks down the Load Reduction Instruction model.

You loved him on the stage and big screen and now you’ll love him at the AATH conference! What a treat it was for me to spend a little time talking with Yakov Smirnoff on this week’s Laughbox podcast! Admittedly, I was a little nervous going into it but he quickly put me at ease as he shared some of his insights on laughter, love, and relationships. I can’t wait to hear more in San Diego! Listen in! More on Yakov… Fans who loved the comedy of Russian born entertainer Yakov Smirnoff throughout his expansive career on television, the silver screen and Broadway can experience the hilarity once again in “Happily Ever Laughter: The Neuroscience of Romantic Relationships.” In this new show, audience members are left in stitches as they enjoy Yakov’s insightful and laughter-filled philosophies on love, relationships and the differences between men and women. The New York Times called Yakov, “Warm-hearted, delightful and splendidly funny.” A mainstay on the entertainment scene since the late 1970’s, Yakov co-starred in movies with Robin Williams in “Moscow on the Hudson“, Tom Hanks in “The Money Pit“, Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson in “Heartburn” and Richard Pryor in “Brewster’s Millions.” Yakov has also given command performances at the White House for several presidents and honored guests. President Ronald Reagan called Yakov, “a national treasure.” Smirnoff was a regular guest star on the award winning NBC sitcom, Night Court. He has been a popular guest of numerous national TV shows including the Tonight Show. You’ve seen him on HBO and enjoyed his humor in his critically acclaimed Showtime special, “Yakov Smirnoff from Moscow…Idaho.” From 1993 to 2015, Yakov performed at his own two-thousand-seat theater in Branson, Missouri where he entertained over four and a half-million people and produced several outstanding award-winning shows. His comedic style is firmly grounded within his mission statement, “to experience happiness and teach it to the world with passion through comedy and sensitivity.“ Yakov’s quest to understand the science of happiness took him to the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a master’s degree in psychology in 2006 under the supervision of Dr. Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology. Today, in addition to being a comedian, Yakov is also an adjunct professor at Missouri State University where he teaches a course on happiness and laughter and is currently earning his Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education & Psychology in Los Angeles, CA. In “Happily Ever Laughter”, Yakov takes his comedy to a new level to showcase laughter’s effects on relationships and envisions a world where sadness and tears are replaced with love and laughter. Whether on stage or in a classroom, Yakov’s audiences love him. He is passionate about helping people extend the honeymoon stage of their relationships and “fall in love and laughter all over again.” Check out Yakov on his website: http://www.yakov.com/
