Her first book Explaining Humans won the Royal Society Insight investment award 2020 making her the youngest ever winner for this prestigious prize & the first person of colour. She provides a unique perspective on the complexities of human behaviour delving into topics such as genetics, machine learning, neuroscience, network theory, game theory, and biochemistry to offer insights into the underlying mechanisms that drive our behaviours. When we understand why we act the way we do, we are more able to get a perspective on it, and decide to make the changes we need to when it is harming ourselves, others, our community or our environment. Jimmy Clare is a motivational speaker, Autism Advocate, author, and founder of CrazyFitnessGuy. Before he started his career as a motivational speaker life was a bumpy road.Doctors told Jimmy's parents that he would not be able to walk without braces or crutches but his family didn't take their word for it. They took him home, loved him as he was, and taught him to persevere. What Makes Him Different From Other Public Speakers? He was diagnosed with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder also known as Autism and this is what he considers to be his unique advantage. There was a point in his life when he thought being different was a bad thing and he was scared that something was wrong with him. He was bullied from elementary school to high school. Weight gain due to medication led to more bullying. As a result, he was determined to come off his meds and he did over time. Jimmy was bullied so often, it became so bad that he would go home in tears every day. It was a horrible experience and he vowed to change what he was going through. Therefore, he lost the weight and learned to stand up to his bullies. That turned his life around. Now he stands up to bullies for those who haven't learned to do so yet. Some of the ways he does this is through his fitness coaching and speaking engagements. enVision Together welcomes Jimmy to our show!

When we think about autism, we often forget that it's not just the individuals on the spectrum who need to adapt; it's also up to us, the neurotypicals, to learn how to interact with them. Join us for a profound discussion with Hope McPheeters, a mother of two kids on the autism spectrum. She navigates us through her personal journey, from the realization that her daughter was different, to the testing and diagnosis, and finally accepting that it was not her fault. Hear Hope's personal experience with the sea of misinformation and how she learned to focus on what was best for her kids.Hope pulls back the curtain on her experience running an ABA therapy clinic with her husband and her work as the Director of Community Engagement. She lays bare the challenges in providing aid to those who need it, the difficulties parents encounter when their children are just starting their autism journey, and the importance of finding resources and support for families. Additionally, Hope gives us an inside look at her nearly two-decade-long advocacy for her children. In the final leg of our conversation, we delve into the importance of communication and socialization for those on the autism spectrum. Hope shares the story of her daughter, Ella, who has built a community on YouTube, showcasing that this is not isolation, but a form of socialization. We talk about the notion that it's not just autistic people who need to learn how to interact with each other, but also neurotypical individuals need to learn how to interact with autistic people. This episode shines a light on Hope's journey of running a charity, helping those who have just discovered their child is autistic, and her wisdom to those listening. If you're a part of the autism community or just curious, don't miss out on this episode. It's a story that will inspire, offer solace, and most importantly, educate.https://tonymantor.comhttps://Facebook.com/tonymantorhttps://instagram.com/tonymantorhttps://twitter.com/tonymantorhttps://youtube.com/tonymantormusicintro/outro music bed written by T. State policy is hugely consequential for autism families — from state Medicaid programs, to support worker wages, to health care, to guardianship, to recreation and respite. This week we bring you the audio of an NCSA webinar held on September 13, 2023 focusing on advocacy at the state level. If you'd like to see the video or slides, please see our website NCSAutism.org.We start with an intro to federal policy, with Gayle Gerdes, Health Policy Source, who is helping NCSA on voicing our positions on federal policy matters. Then our main speaker is Susan Goldstein, a dynamo mother of a young woman with severe autism who parlayed her passion for autism programs into creating Florida legislation that expanded autism services in the state, and was later elected a state representative. Today she serves as a lobbyist for the Legis Group in Florida. Susan was featured in a prior Autism Confidential podcast, and this episode greatly expands on the concepts she discussed there — with a huge abundance of advice and inspiration. Hosted by Jill Escher and Leanne Morphet, NCSA Policy Chair.
My guest today, Lorri Unumb needs no introduction. Lorri is a mother of three, an autism mom, a lawyer, an autism advocate, and an absolute dynamo in the field. Be sure to check out her long list of achievements in the guest bio for this episode! We are talking about something so important and impactful for families everywhere who have an autism diagnosis: insurance. In 2003 when Lorri's youngest, Ryan, was diagnosed ABA was not a covered treatment even though it was evidence based and crucial to his opportunity to reach his highest potential. Full time ABA therapy for Ryan's needs would run $70,000+ annually. And they weren't the only family dealing with this. While Lorri's family could make it work, paying full price for therapy was not ideal and for some families this would simply not be possible. So in 2005 she got to work writing a bill that would require insurance coverage for all evidence based autism treatments to include ABA. And after a 2 year journey what became known as “Ryan's Law” was passed in 2007. Autism Speaks reached out to employ Lorri and she then spent the next decade replicating this law across the country, finally passing in the 50th state in 2019.Lorri also shares about her role in the Council for Autism Service Providers, a collaborative organization of providers working and learning together from across the country. And as an autism mom herself she has some great advice for parents facing new diagnosis: “It gets better”.#autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:How insurance for autism treatment has changed in the last 20 years. What is Ryan's Law?The impact of high cost and uncovered autism treatment for families. What is the Council of Autism Service Providers?Advice for autism parents.Mentioned In This Episode:Council of Autism Service ProvidersThe Autism Law SummitLearn more about the ABA SPEECH Connection CEU Membership and Joint Attention on September 12th at 8-9pm eastern (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/835049703570) and September 13th at 8-9pm eastern. Intro Gabrielle Hughes a Tutor and an Autism advocate, Gabrielle got her start in by teaching sewing lessons when she was a homeschool senior. She taught classes at a local home school group and discovered she had a passion for teaching. When she was 19 she discovered she was most likely autistic and was able to get an official diagnosis at 21. This was a huge revelation and helped explained so much and once she was able to seek out others like her it was game-over life was different in so many great ways. She is proud to be autistic and firmly believes that we all have strengths and weaknesses. Gabrielle teaches Social Group for Autistic Teens on Outschool. All of her classes meet the different learning differences and abilities, so all are welcome. Top three takeaways Being different isn't a bad thing. One of the most beneficial things you can do for your neurodivergent child is to help them form a community of neurodivergent peers and role models. Autistic students don't need to learn how to act like neurotypical people. They need a safe environment where they can learn to be confident in being themselves. A parent's perspective and reaction to receiving an autism diagnosis is often shaped by how autism is presented to them, their previous experiences and preconceptions about autism, or a combination of the two. The same may be true for an autistic person receiving a diagnosis for the first time. Too often, a major source of stress and misunderstanding is when autism is presented as a verdict. That is, the diagnosis in and of itself will determine the quality of life for a child, person, or family, too often in terms of a struggle, or a dire prognosis that may include a listing of the stressors that would be experienced. However, an alternative perspective is viewing the experience of autism as a journey, which opens up the possibility of potential for growth for the child, older person, and family. In this episode of Uniquely Human: The Podcast, Barry and Dave discuss these radically different approaches to understanding the experience of autism. Check more about this episode here!

A recent CDC study reported that one in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism. Today's guest, Temple Grandin, is one of the country's most renowned voices on autism with an incredible ability to open up and share her perspective on the world with us. A professor of animal science at Colorado State University, Grandin has been a pioneer in improving the welfare of farm animals for decades. She is the author or co-author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior and more than a dozen books that include the best-sellers “Thinking in Pictures” (which became an HBO movie starring Claire Danes) and “Animals in Translation.” Her latest book, “Visual Thinking,” explores neurodivergent thinking and the different ways our brains are wired. As she explains, “I didn't know until I was [in my] late thirties that other people thought in words. Everything [for me] comes up like snapshots and little mini-videos, and it was a shock for me to learn that other people were not visual thinkers.” In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, Temple spoke with Dr. Kraft about how the perception of autism has changed and how diversity of thinking makes us all stronger: “I think we need to have collaborations between the different kinds of thinkers, recognize that the different kinds of thinking exist and look at where there are complementary skills.”Learn moreTemple GrandinCVSHealth.com

Jimmy Clare is a motivational speaker, Autism Advocate, author, and founder of CrazyFitnessGuy. But before he started his career as a speaker it was a bumpy road when he was younger. Jimmy's Biography Jimmy was born on October 9th in Millburn New Jersey United States. After the birth of Jimmy, doctors told Jimmy's parents that he will not be able to walk without braces or crutches. His family took him home and loved him for who he is. He was also bullied in school from elementary school all the way up to high school. He then stood up to all the bullies and got some of them expelled. He went through nine ear surgeries, and three surgeries in one day. One for 6 wisdom teeth, 2 moles, and the last ear surgery that made number 9. He just keeps proving people wrong with his persistence time after time again. On top of those obstacles, he lives with spinal stenosis every day. For those that don't know what Spinal Stenosis is it's where the spine is pressing tight on the spinal cord. Which makes it hard for him to turn his head from left to right or up and down. What Makes Jimmy So Unique? He is Autistic but he likes to refer to it as "slightly Autistic" because he doesn't have it severe like others. Dedicated And Continues To Better Himself Every day he continues to better himself by working out 6 to 9 times a week. three days a week he practices kickboxing while on the other days he works out on Beachbody on Demand. That's why people refer to him as CrazyFitnessGuy. He also enjoys reading books that he schedules time out of the day to read. But that's not all he also likes to listen to podcasts about improving oneself and time management. He is currently majoring in media studies at my local community college and once he has completed his certificate, he plans on getting his degree in a four-year school. His end goal is to become a motivational speaker to inspire people around the world. On April 12th, 2020 Jimmy also started his own podcast called CrazyFitnessGuy Healthy Living Podcast. He is almost finished with season one and already preparing for another season. Practices What He Preaches Jimmy Clare practices what he preaches every day even if he messes up he keeps trying. He is one of a kind that no one can replace or replicate him. What Makes Him Different From Other Public Speakers? He is no ordinary public speaker. He was diagnosed with Non-Verbal Learning Disorder also known as Autism and this is what he considers to be his unique advantage. There was a point in his life where he thought being different was a bad thing and he was scared that something was wrong with him. But he was younger then and he didn't quite understand what Autism was, this has changed now that he is an adult. He Has Experienced A Lot of Uphill Battles In Life... Growing up he was considered to be a little bigger around the middle than other kids his age and it may have been that his diet wasn't the greatest plus he was on medication that caused weight gain (side-effects). However, it was necessary for him to take the medication to help stabilize his moods and emotions. The weight gain led to bullying and as a result, he was determined to come off his meds and he did over time. He got bullied so often and it was so bad that he would go home in tears every day. It was a horrible experience and he vowed to change all of that. He lost the weight. Jimmy stood up to the bullies and put an end to the bullying. https://www.crazyfitnessguy.com/
